It had been weeks since the last time you and Newt had done anything remotely romantic. You understood he was busy writing his new book and tending to his creatures, but lately, you felt rather forgotten. He barely spoke to you in-between writing, taking care of the creatures and getting supplies. Most days you either wandered around wherever you were in your journey and poke around in little shops.
Your current location was somewhere in Hungary. It was a rather rainy day and you decided to stay within your room at the Inn you and Newt were currently residing. He was busy down in his case, doing God knows what. Probably re-writing that page about Hungarian Horn Tails for the fiftieth time.
Sighing, you looked out the window at the pouring rain. You noticed a couple huddled under an umbrella running to find shelter. They laughed as they ran arm in arm towards the closet building finally making their way inside and disappearing.
It was nearly four o'clock in the afternoon and you'd only seen Newt once; while we was brushing his teeth before heading down in to the case. Fidgeting with your bracelet, you started to wonder why he seemed so distant these past weeks. Had you done something wrong? Were you not doing enough? Had he finally become bored with you? You just couldn't seem to figure it out.
You were torn away from your thoughts when you felt your stomach rumble. You wondered what you should eat and decided to head down in to the case to ask Newt if he had any preferences on dinner.
Gently, you unlatched the case and made your way down the ladder. Gracefully landing on the floor inside his hut, you saw him at his work table. He was filling a bucket with pellets which you knew to be the food for the Mooncalves. He hadn't even flinched or turned to look at you when you entered.
You waited a moment, seeing if he'd notice you...
"Newt?" You realized he wouldn't and just decided to announce your presence. "Newt?" You repeated.
"Oh, Y/N... you need something?Hey, could you hand me that towel over there?" Holding the bucket in one hand, he reached out with his other as you handed him the towel.
"I was getting hungry and was wondering if you'd like to maybe take a break and go get some food?"
Newt was wiping up his mess with the towel and already seemed to have forgotten your presence.
"Newt!" You raised your voice at the wizard and he whipped his head around.
"What!? I'm busy!"
Your blood was beginning to boil. Arms crossed, brows furrowed, you huffed loudly and closed your eyes, trying to hold back your tears of frustration. Finally, after waiting a few seconds, you calmly replied.
"You're always busy."
Newt gave you a confused look. "Well, I'm kind of writing a book..."
"I know that," You retorted. "I just thought that maybe you'd like a break and spend some time with me since all you seem to do is stay in this stupid case all day caring more about your book and your creatures than you do me!"
His eyes went from slightly irritated to completely glowing with anger. "Excuse me? Did you say stupid?"
You immediately regretted your choice of words. You realized you had really upset him. Part of you didn't seem to care. He deserved it.
"Newt, I-" Before you could finish, he was already walking out of the hut towards the mooncalves habitat. You stood there not knowing what to do next. You'd gone too far, you knew that. But he had also made you feel invisible and like you didn't matter or exist. Why couldn't he see that and just apologize.
"I was talking to you!" You yelled after him. Growling angrily, you sauntered off after him. He plopped the bucket down and with the one hand filled with pellets, began feeding the Mooncalves. You wanted to continue yelling but knew it would only startle the creatures and so you kept your voice low, but continued the angry tone. "Newt-"
"What?" He cut you off angrily. "I'm trying to feed the creatures, and unless you're going to help, than I suggest you please leave me alone."
Oh, he had done it. It took everything in you not to scream at the top of your lungs. Why was he acting this way?
"What is the matter with you!?"
Newt turned to look at you.
"What's the matter with me? I'm just trying to get some work done and you're yelling at me for no apparent reason!"
You had had it. There was nothing left to say. Stubbornly, you began to make your way out of the suitcase. Summoning your coat, you opened the door to the room and slammed it shut behind you. You could care less if people heard you. You stomped down the stairs as you made your way out of the Inn in to the cold and rainy night.

The chilly air hit your face like a brick wall. The rain had turned to a light drizzle but the clouds above gave indication that more rain was sure to come. The wind whipped your H/C around your face but you didn't care. Making your way down the street to the nearest cafe, you kept your head down, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone as much as possible. Opening the cafe door, you made your way to the counter. The delicious smells filled your senses. You had begun to calm down and the clerk smiled at you, ready to take your order. Without even thinking, you ordered the first thing you saw on the menu board.
"There you are, miss. Enjoy!" The clerk placed your food in front of you at the table you chose in the way back corner; away from all the curious eyes around you. You could feel your red eyes, sore from holding back the tears. Maybe this was it you thought. Maybe it was time to leave Newt and let him do what he obviously found more important than you. Of course you knew his creatures were important to him. All the years you knew him he was hopelessly devoted to them. It was something you admired in him and part of what drew you to him. You never thought it would get to this point though. Had he lost all interest in you? You went through the last few months in your head and tried to pin point anything that could lead you to an answer. Sadly, nothing came to mind and you sat with the feeling that maybe Newt just didn't love you anymore. The thought caused daggers in your heart and your throat to swell up. Pushing the food away, you suddenly lost all your appetite.

Quietly opening the door to your room, you hung your coat up, slipped off your shoes and made your way to the bathroom. Before you reached it you noticed Newt emerging from the case. You glanced at him and he looked up at you. He still looked a but angry, but his face changed instantly from anger to concern. He could see your red eyes. He paused, standing just beside his case. You stood motionless, averting your eyes down. Neither one of you knew what to say. The quiet sound of the clock ticking on the night stand between the two beds was the only noise to be heard. Finally, Newt cleared his throat. Looking up at him, you watched as he was moved his cinnamon colored hair from his face.
"Y/N..." He began. You quickly turned away to continue in to the bathroom when Newt caught hold of your arm. Angrily you tried to push your arm from his grasp but he refused to let go.
"Newt, let me go," You ordered.
"No."
"Listen, Mr. Scamander, you better let me go or so help me Go-"
"Would you just listen, please?!" He pleaded. You stared in to his eyes and saw his desperation. Letting go of your arm, he never broke eye contact. "Please. Can we just talk?"
You wanted nothing more than to talk. In fact, that's what you had been trying to do this whole time. Deciding to listen to him, you walked over to your bed and plopped down. Newt followed behind and plopped down on his across from you. Silently, you both sat there, fidgeting with your hands before Newt finally spoke.
"I'm sorry," He began. You wanted to tell him apology not accepted, but you let him continue. "I realize I've been rather distant... I-I haven't been the best friend or the best boyfriend... I've put my book and creatures before us and I understand now how that must have made you feel."
"Do you?" You choked, tears slipping down your cheek.
Newt's eyes rested on your face and his heart broke in two as he saw the tears. He had caused them and he felt absolutely horrible. He wanted to embrace you in his arms, but looking at you, you seemed so closed off and unwelcoming. He knew it was best to stay where he was.
"Please understand that it was never intentional. I just got swept up and I.... I just lost sight of what else was important. Our relationship was going so well, I forgot that it takes effort to keep it that way."
You knew Newt and you knew his heart was good. He was incapable of hurting another living thing. Looking him deep in the eyes, you stood up and fell in to his arms, sobbing in to his chest. Wrapping you up, Newt held you as tight as he could. Kissing the top of your head and whispering "I'm so sorry" over and over, whilst cradling you. You cried for a good three minutes straight before lifting your head up. Looking down at you, you noticed his eyes were red and his cheeks were tear stained. Lifting up a hand, you wiped them away. Newt smiled and kissed your forehead.
"I promise to never take you, my greatest creature of all, for granted ever again." And with that, he planted a tender kiss on your lips.
