Living in a house full of boys is never peaceful. My six brothers are always up to something, sometimes they even trouble me!
Recently, my brothers and I had taken a break away from home - in Busan and had gone to a lovely rented cabin in the forest, just outside Seoul.
My older brothers had taken turns to spend time with me, some even shared a room with me. But the one thing I found myself repeating to each of them was: Go to sleep Hyung.
...
Hobi hyung... Sigh...
.
.
"Meow, meow. Meow, meow, Kookie. Kookie." Hobi hyung sang tirelessly on repeat for the past two minutes - with a little goyangi (cat) dance!
He'd taken up the task of singing the extra cute Japanese song after I'd curled up on my bed completely exhausted, in an attempt to get my attention. Apparently, to him, I just needed some cheering up because my team had lost at the race we had on the way back to the cabin.
But, as someone with a high tolerance level for almost anything, it was easy for me to ignore him.
Hobi hyung was usually very hyper and at night he became extra loud and extra boisterous. In hindsight, Hobi hyung was the complete opposite of Yoongi hyung.
Where Hobi hyung would run off to explore the entire forest and return with rocks, branches and other souvenirs he'd found - depending on where he was; Yoongi hyung was Hobi hyung's polar opposite. Yoongi hyung was mellowed and he barely moved a muscle, unless he was in the kitchen.
The two of them were so different that people often forgot that they were actually twins - including our parents!
Hobi hyung was like Sunshine - bright and bold, his happiness was contagious. Contrariwise, Yoongi hyung was like Moonlight - silent and yet so soothing to the soul, being in his company made you feel stronger and more confident in your own skin.
But Hobi hyung was also very talkative when we wanted to go to bed. It's because he was always bursting with energy - none of us have an inkling of a clue where he gets all of this energy from. He rarely slept early and as a result, he'd bustle about the house cleaning and tidying while we slept.
A habit that had sometimes seriously irritated the other members in my family.
Naturally, my other five hyungs paired Hobi hyung off with me whenever we had to share rooms (especially if we weren't at home). This was often the case at sleepovers, or if we visited different hotels - whenever we traveled as a family, or on school trips. So, I was used to him by now.
I actually didn't mind.
This time, however, we were out sharing a cabin in a forest, where my hyungs were enjoying the fresh air, the wildlife and the beautiful scenery mother nature had painted in these parts.
After a long day of hiking, I was extremely exhausted. But - You guessed it - Hoseok hyung was still so energetic, even after that exhausting hike up the side of the mountain!
I really questioned my sanity now.
Older siblings are just sewn from a different kind of cloth... They're so resilient. All six of my hyungs were like that.
Hobi hyung was always so positive... In some weird way, he's the driving force of our family. But right now, he was pinching my cheeks and "baby-talking" to me.
"Awwwwwww! Who's a cute, little, tiny, baby brother?! With his cute chubby cheeks and adorable big eyes!" Hobi hyung asked me in a sing-song voice while still pinching my cheeks.
I liked it, but I never let it show. I couldn't let him win!
"Go to bed hyung. I'm exhausted." I muttered, throwing a spare cushion at him.
"Ya, Kookie... Who's my sweet, little brother?!" Hobi hyung continued, oblivious to my exhaustion. He bent over my sleeping form to ruffle my hair in the way only an older sibling could.
I think I understood our cat, Twinkles now. The little grey and black tabby cat wasn't all that excited around our Hobi hyung either because he would often excitedly trouble her while she snoozed in the sun on her pillow.
Sigh... Poor Twinkles.
He proceeded to ruffle my hair, singing a lullaby in the opposite way of how it's meant to be sung - usually people sing lullabies in a soft, slow rhythm, often enough in hushed tones. Right? But not Hobi hyung. He sang the traditional lullaby in an upbeat K-pop tune!
It's not that I minded. I didn't. I just needed sleep.
I smiled at his creativity - but he really needed to find another way to burn off that extra energy.
My Hobi hyung is so caring. But I also wanted to just throw a cushion at him.
After a while of his revisited lullabies using K-pop tunes, he kissed my cheek as older brothers tended to do on the rare occasion they showed affection. Hobi hyung ruffled my fringe, and mumbled something before finally turning in for the night, pulling the blankets over himself and switching off the bedside lamp.
...
Not you too Namjoon hyung...
The very next day, Namjoon hyung decided to share a room with me as Hobi hyung was talking to Taehyung hyung and had fallen asleep in Namjoon hyung's bed.
Namjoon hyung loved reading and often stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading his novels. He read a variety of book genres, some of them including: Shakespearean plays, Korean literature, Japanese literature, Historical fiction, The Sherlock Holmes series, The Hunger Games, The Harry Potter series, The Percy Jackson series, as well as many dystopian series such as The Mortal Instruments, The Maze Runner, The Divergent, the Doctor Who novels and... let's not forget all the Manga series he enjoyed!
This time, Namjoon hyung was absorbed by a book called 'Ruin and Rising'.
Yes, even in the middle of a vacation, Namjoon hyung would take out a novel to read!
Our parents often scolded him for leaving the light on till late at night. So hyung often used a torch to continue reading his book once they left. Namjoon hyung carried a torch wherever he went, even though our smartphones had these built in and ebooks existed.
"Ebooks don't have the smell of a normal book... Which takes away the magic of reading." Hyung had exclaimed mystically when I had asked him about this a few months ago.
.
.
.
"Hey, Kookie, did you know that this book is based in parts of Russia." Namjoon hyung exclaimed into the dark room all of a sudden. He was excited.
I really wanted to react, but I need to sleep as well. We all had a long day of adventure in the forest - Taehyung hyung and I had gone out into the forest to explore and inspect the wild flowers and berries according to the travel book we shared. Namjoon, Yoongi and Hoseok hyung were out exploring the lake nearby. And Jin hyung and Jimin hyung were preparing lunch at the main cabin in the forest.
Taehyung hyung and I had returned with an armful of edible mushrooms and root vegetables. It was amazing just how many things were edible in the forest.
Jin hyung and Jimin hyung had cooked up a small feast for us, adding the radish and potatoes that Taehyung hyung and I had discovered. In addition, we had eaten lots of rice, which filled me up just right. This might have added to my sleepiness.
"I see, that's very interesting hyung." I said, stifling a yawn. "Can I borrow the book when you're done?" I asked him as I felt my eyes droop, heavier and heavier with the sleep that was beckoning me. I lay in my bed, silently willing hyung's torch light to dim itself.
At some point, I had fallen asleep.
The next morning, I awoke to find Namjoon hyung huddled up close to me, a hand propped under his pillow, while his book was firmly clasped in his other hand.
I sighed at my older brother's adorable behaviour. He was really unique, just like a typical middle child. I gently removed the book from his hand and left it on the table beside the bed as I got off to look for some breakfast.
...
Jin hyung the Llama
After having a torch shining in the room for most of the night, I didn't feel very excited about this morning. But I forged on.
Jin hyung was making breakfast in the kitchen along with Hoseok hyung and Taehyung hyung.
I found a spread of delicious breakfast treats like traditional porridge, pancakes and even french toast.
After a while Namjoon hyung rose from bed, his blonde hair sticking up oddly, he looked adorable in his pyjamas and ruffled hair.
"Namjoon-ah looks so adorable with his sleepy face." Jin hyung said, pinching a dimpled cheek of Namjoon hyung. Hyung, still a little sleepy, smiled but didn't say anything.
Just then, Taehyung hyung's tummy rumbled and the other hyungs all laughed, agreeing that it was time we all ate. The six of us sat down merrily for a good breakfast (Jimin hyung was still asleep - he must have stayed up till late gaming).
Today, we planned on staying indoors since it was raining. Most of the hyungs had retreated up to their shared rooms, either to game or complete one of their many hobbies. But Jin hyung remained in the kitchen making typical rainy day snacks with Jimin hyung, who had finally woken up.
Everyone was relaxing, doing their own thing.
By the end of the day, Jin hyung was the one to share a room with me ...
This time, instead of pinching my cheeks, singing like a hyper chipmunk, or reading obsessively; Jin hyung petted my head and sang me a traditional lullaby. I was so touched by the gesture. My eldest brother was probably the most level headed one from the seven of us.
I really looked up to him.
"Jin hyung?" I called for his attention.
"Hmmm ... Yes dongsaeng? (Little brother)" Jin hyung hummed as he stroked my hair.
"You've been up all day cooking for us. And cleaning up. Why don't you rest too, hyung?" I asked him, opening my eyes to face my eldest brother.
In the moonlight shining through the room, Jin hyung looked much younger. He observed me quietly for a few minutes, then, without notice, he hugged me and said:
"I'm so lucky to have a little brother like you Kookie. Thank you for helping me today." He sniffed, but blinked away his tears before I saw any.
Jin hyung was such a softie. But that's why I loved him most.
...
Yoongi hyung the cuddly cat
The second eldest son of my parents could often be described as enigmatic yet charming. The girls in our area went crazy for our Yoongi hyung - especially the girls at his university.
However, hyung's girlfriend, our Ji-eun noona, often glared daggers at these girls who tried to win my brother's affections. It was actually very amusing.
But at home, everyone, if they were asked to, would describe Yoongi hyung as a cute and cuddly cat. We would often find both Twinkles and Yoongi hyung cuddled in a sofa watching sappy K-drama together, staring intently at the screen, often with snacks.
At other times, the two can be found napping in the sun on Yoongi hyung's bed, if he was home for the day.
.
.
.
After we returned from the trip to the forest, Yoongi hyung and I were in charge of unpacking the two vehicles we used for the trip. It was a little exhausting, but we made quick work of it. Thereafter, hyung called me aside to join him in the living room while the other hyungs prepared supper.
"Thank you for helping everyone this time around Jungkook. I know it hasn't been easy for you since you have a lot of studying to do as well." Hyung sighed.
"It's alright hyung. We're on a break now, so it's alright." I smiled at Yoongi hyung.
"Even so... You're a good kid." He said to me, ruffling my head all of a sudden, smiling at me warmly.
I wasn't sure what to say. Hyung was always so quiet. But he observed a lot around him.
But before I could say anything further, hyung fell back on the sofa, his eyes closed and his face was flushed. Out of instinct, I felt his forehead with my knuckles like they do in movies.
'Uh-oh... Yoongi hyung is burning up.'
I didn't know what else to do, so I carried him up to our shared room and grabbed a facecloth from a cupboard on a wall opposite his bed.
I rushed to the bathroom to wet the cloth under the tap and returned in record time, placing the cool damp cloth in my brother's forehead.
"Kookie?" Hyung mumbled groggily.
"Shhh... Hyung. Go to sleep. I'll wake you up when dinner is ready. But for now you need to rest." I say to him, smoothing his dark fringe away from his forehead affectionately.
He works too hard. And yet he doesn't sleep much.
Hyung is studying music and when he isn't being a cat with our Twinkles, he is in his studio across the road - which is actually Ji-eun noona's basement.
Sometimes I can hear them play the piano and guitar all the way from here. I think someday, they'll both make amazing musicians.
...
Being the youngest in a family of seven sons isn't easy. I guess that's why we have to have each other's backs - because we're a family.
If there's anything I learned on this trip, it was that my brothers, as annoying as they can sometimes be, are always there for me and they really appreciate me.
I'm lucky to have such amazing brothers.
