In The Name Of Science (Pietro Maximoff x reader)
Based off the song the scientist by Coldplay
Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start

You sat with your head resting in your hand, leaning against the bar in the Avengers tower. The room was still a mess, with splintered wood and bits of glass strewn everywhere; the signs of the first battle with Ultron evident wherever you looked. You received word that the team was on their way back from Sokovia, and you were anxious to see how the new team members had done under fire.
The last time you had spoken with either Wanda or Pietro was about a year ago when you escaped the lab that held the three of you. No matter how much you begged, they wouldn't leave with you, and your friendship felt that it was all but gone now. How cruel fate was to bring you back together here, when you thought you had finally moved on from those memories; from memories of loving a man who didn't love you back.
When the team exited the quinjet, the first out was Clint; his face was pale and tired, holding Natasha's arm as he walked. Tony and Steve were immediately behind, looking like they were deep in a conversation that was about to get quite heated. Finally, Wanda and Pietro emerged and met your gaze straight away. Wanda squealed and ran to you, throwing her arms around you.
"My love, you really are here! Oh, I am so happy to see you again!"
You welcomed her embrace and returned the hug readily, though your eyes set on a target behind her, watching Pietro come closer. "Hello, (Y/N), we've missed you so much." He joined in, putting his arms around both of you. When they pulled back from you, Pietro looked to his sister, "Wanda, could you give us a moment alone please?"
"Not like I would want to talk to her, right?" she sneered. "We can catch up later, (Y/N)." She gave your arm a small squeeze and moved to follow the rest of the team out of the room, leaving you alone with Pietro for the first time in forever.
"I want you to know that I'm sorry about how things were left with us, (Y/N). I want you to understand why we didn't go with you."
"Okay," you sighed, moving behind the bar to grab a glass and a bottle, pouring yourself a drink. "Want one?"
"We didn't go with you because I couldn't understand what I was feeling. I didn't want to go with you because I was afraid of what would happen." He grabbed your drink from your hands and took a long drink before handing it back. "I was afraid of falling in love with you because I couldn't guarantee my own future, much less yours."
You scoffed at this, what you believed to be the weakest argument in the history of any argument ever made. "Well then, my friend, it's your lucky day." You grabbed the bottle and began your move towards your room, "because it's nowhere near being your problem anymore."

Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a science apart
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start
Even though it had surfaced some unhappy memories for you, it was good to have Wanda around you again. She was the perfect training partner, given her powers and your ability to negate them. Steve insisted that you train when the tower was empty, however, since you both had abilities that could transcend the structure and possibly affect other team members inadvertently.
"Ow! Hey, we're not actually fighting, Wanda! Ease up just a bit!" She threw another pulse of energy at you, but this time you successfully stopped it mid-flight and the energy dissipated away, but only just barely.
"Perhaps you just need to pay better attention, (Y/N)."
"Hmm?" Your eyes had found Pietro in your peripheral vision, standing at the door to the tower and looking out anxiously. "Oh, yeah, right." Your head snapped back towards her when you heard her laughing, "right, right! I'm here, I'm watching."
"Okay, what do you see down there that's so..." she peered out the window past you, stopping short when she saw Pietro. "Oh. I don't think you were meant to see that, (Y/N)."
"Why not?" You looked back down at him, your curiosity piqued now as to what it was that wasn't meant for you, and were now fully determined to see.
She put her hand on your shoulder and gave it a supportive squeeze, "he has a date."
"Oh," you whispered. With a small shake of your head and a quick clearing of your throat, you excused yourself from your session a bit early. "Um, so I should probably go." You felt moisture building in your eyes but you wiped it away before she could see. "Hey, don't tell him that I saw, okay?"

"How could you be so stupid, man? Isn't it obvious that the girl still loves you? Or are you completely blind?" Clint had his feet propped up on the table, watching TV in the lounge of the tower, yelling at Pietro as he entered after his date. "She's got it bad, and so do you."
"No, that's not true, old man. She said it was no longer my problem." Pietro dropped himself on the couch next to Clint, sighing and exasperated as he grabbed the beer from his hand and took a drink. "I should believe her...right?"
Clint's face was covered in shock at the bravery of the man to take his drink. "Let me give you a lesson on how things work around here, new guy. Don't touch my beer." He yanked the drink away and wiped the mouth of the bottle with his shirt. "Lesson over."
"So what do I do then? Share with me the insight of your age, oh wise one."
"Go tell her how you feel." Clint aimed the bottle towards the kitchen as Pietro stood to leave. "But grab me a new beer first, kid. You need to learn to respect your elders."

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
With the twins now in the tower, leaving your room wasn't one of your priorities anymore. The thought of moving to the upstate facility had crossed your mind several times, and it became a better idea each time you considered it. You had told Pietro that you weren't his problem anymore, and you had meant it in the moment, but now you weren't so sure. He was on your mind constantly; so much so that you asked Wanda to block him from your thoughts, but she refused. She had to be in on it, wanting the two of you to work it out, but you had no hope of that ever happening.
The longer you stayed in your room, lying on your bed in the dark, the more that the memories of the three of you would flash through your mind. They became so frequent that you wondered if you were in the present or in the past. You were jarred from your own mind when your door flew open, flooding the room with a harsh light that burned your eyes, leaving only the silhouette of him in the doorway.
"(Y/N), we need to talk. Right now."
Speak of the devil. "Pietro, do you even know what time it is? Can't whatever this is wait until tomorrow? You know, when people are normally awake?"
"You weren't asleep." He shut the door and moved closer to sit on the edge of your bed. "I know what your voice sounds like when you wake, and this isn't it."
You threw the covers of your bed back harshly, some of them landing over him, "you think you're so damn smart, don't you? You think you know me and have all the answers, right? You think that you know what's good for me." You stood and stepped towards the door, ready to let him out so that you could return to lying on your bed and staring at the ceiling in peace. At least it was better than talking to him right now.
"Yes," he said without an essence of doubt in his tone. "I am what's good for you. And you are good for me. We've been dancing around this for far too long, and now we are both here. It has to mean something after all this time."
You bolted forward and shoved his shoulders, knocking him back onto your bed. "You are so arrogant! I was doing just fine until I found out you were here!"
Pietro reached up faster than your eyes could see and grabbed your wrists, pulling you down to the bed and flipping you onto your back. He climbed over to straddle you, still holding your wrists firmly above your head.
"I have never been fine without you!"
"Let me go," you whispered. "Things are...different now, Pietro. Let me go."
"No," he said as he leaned down, pressing his lips firmly against yours. You struggled at first, trying to move away, hoping he would release you, but he only became more resolved to keep you there. When you finally relented and he felt your body relax, he pulled back to look at you, his eyes searching yours for some sign of what you were feeling. "Things are different now, (Y/N). We can't go back to the start, but we can go forward from here. We can." He leaned down to kiss you again, and this time you didn't fight him.
