Chapter 7 - Jack's Weirdness

Finally, my day at school was finished! Now I could go back to hanging out with my best friend. I hoped Jack still wasn't upset with me. He seemed so down the last time I saw him due to him not being able to attend school with me. It was so sad watching him walk away like an upset little puppy dog. Really, Jack has a lot of similarities to a puppy, now that I think about it. I unlocked the door to my house, looking around the living room. I scanned everything, but I didn't see anyone in the house. It was totally empty. "Mom?" I asked, hoping that she would hear me. That's when it hit me. She told me she was going to be home late due to her being at a friend's get together. I sighed and gently face-palmed, walking inside the house and locking the door behind me. "Jack?" I asked, knowing he was here. Shockingly, there was no answer. That was strange, because usually, he was watching TV on the couch or staring at the door, waiting for me to come in. I stepped further into the house, kicking off my tennis shoes and replacing them with slippers. "J-Jack? Are you here?" No answer, yet again.

I started to get a little bit scared. I really hope everything's okay with him. First, he gets upset because he can't come to my school, and now he disappears? That's just a coincidence, right? Those two events are not connected in any way, shape, or form. There is no cause and effect present here, nope! Ugh..how long was I going to keep lying to myself? I brushed some hair behind my ear and cautiously stepped further into the house, whipping my head left and right to look around for the black-haired boy. I slowly walked down my hallway, turning on the lights. "Jack, is everything okay?"

Suddenly, I heard a small creak. My body froze stiff and I slowly turned my head around to face my bedroom door, slightly open. What the heck? This was like a scene straight out of a horror movie! Am I the protagonist? Oh great, the protagonist always dies in these types of movies! Then, my door creaked all the way open and there stood a tall, dark figure. I jumped and screamed louder than I ever had before. I decided to be brave, because I ran as fast as I could and, with all my might, punched this mystery man right in the face. "OW!" I heard a voice familiar scream. The figure fell down onto the carpet and I think I heard him curse under his breath, holding his nose. I tilted my head to get a better look at the guy. My eyes widened. Oh crap.

"Jack?!" I yelled, running up to him. Jack looked back at me and scurried across the floor, pressing his back up against the wall, still holding his nose. I think he thought I was going to hit him again. Woopsies! "Why didn't you answer me the first time I called out for you!? I thought something had happened! You scared me to death!" I scolded him. I really was scared to death! If something ever were to happen to Jack and I wasn't there, I would never forgive myself. I can't lose Jack, he's too special and important to me. He looked down at me, a softer and not as scared look on his face. He raised his eyebrows a little bit. "But why did you punch me!?" He yelled back at me. "I don't know! I thought you were some kind of a murderer that had broke into the house! Or maybe you were a burglar here to steal everything we own. Honestly, Jack, I thought I was in some sort of creepy horror movie the way you walked out and how my door creaked open. Were you trying to give me a heart attack!?" I defended myself.

Jack sighed, finally understanding my emotions and what I went for in those very few minutes. He got up, letting go of his nose, and then smiled at me as if his pain was just melted away. "Tough punch, m'lady." He complimented me. I loved when he complimented me, but this time, I didn't react like I normally would've. "Jack, don't joke around, this is serious. Why didn't you answer me? What were you doing in there?" I asked, in a confused tone. Jack's smile got wiped right off of his face like it could come off with makeup remover and he suddenly started to look pretty nervous. "Sorry, I was listening to music through headphones." He chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. I could tell he was lying. I looked back up at him. "No you weren't.." I commented, boldly. What was going on? Why would he have any reason to lie to me?

Jack sighed, knowing I had seen right through him. It's one of my super powers. "No, you're right. I wasn't." He answered with a slight huff. I faced him, a stern look on my face, and my arms crossed. "If you weren't listening to music, then what were you doing?" I asked, yet again. I needed an answer, this whole thing was driving me crazy! I was so confused. Jack paused for a moment before speaking again. "..Drinking." My eyes widened. Holy crap, I was not expecting that. "Jack, what the heck is wrong with you?! You're not allowed to drink my mom and dad's wine, you can't drink by yourself! Oh, and one more thing, YOU'RE ONLY 17!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Jack shushed me, to probably prevent me from damaging my vocal chords forever. "No no, it's not at all like that! I was drinking water.." He put his arms behind his back/ "..and a pill. I-I got a headache, I needed to take some aspirin." He told me. I still suspected he wasn't telling the truth, but I didn't want to push him any further.

I raised my eyebrow and un-crossed my arms.. "Okay..do you feel up to do anything tonight?" I inquired. He looked at me, shrugging like the clueless boy he was. "I don't know, maybe watch a movie and have popcorn? When will your mom be back?" He asked me. I thought to myself, looking at the clock in the kitchen. "She said sometime around 10:00, so we've got a couple hours before she comes back." I sighed, looking back at Jack. "Cool, we have plenty of time! Let's go ahead and have the best night ever." He smiled, taking my hands in his. I have to admit, this got the butterflies in my stomach frantically flying around and smacking face-first into the walls.

I nodded, my cheeks reddening due to his romantic action. "Y-Yeah, sounds plate! I mean, great! Y-You can choose the movie." I offered, stammering over every single word. Man, he must think I'm weird. Jack raised his eyebrow, a little confused by why I suddenly started stuttering. "Alright then? How about we watch Captain America: Civil War?" He smiled at me, his pearly whites shining brightly. He still didn't let go of my hands! The butterflies have lost control, I repeat, the butterflies have lost control. Mayday, mayday, mayday! I smiled. "Yeah! I really love that movie. You know who my favorite is, right?" I asked, a slight smirk spread across my face. He nodded, the same smirk spread across his. "Yeah.." "Spider-Man." We both spoke in unison.

We both giggled at each other and I was sure my cheeks were probably in flames considering how much I was blushing. "You know me so well." I smiled. It was true, he knew me better than any other person in the world. I'm so lucky to have him as my best friend! He beamed at me, a kind smile plastered across his face. This was one of the intense scenes where you didn't know what to do. Do you break the gaze, do you make a random sound effect, do you..kiss him? I looked at his eyes, then his lips. No, wait, no, I can't do this! Celia, what are you even thinking? He doesn't want this! I'm sure he doesn't. He looked into my eyes, then let go of my hands and broke the gaze. Thanks, Jack. I sighed out of relief and walked into the living room. "So, you make the popcorn, I'll put on the movie." I offered, going to pop the DVD in the VCR. He smiled at me, like an excited child that was just promised ice cream. "This is going to be the best darn popcorn you have ever tasted!" He chuckled. I chuckled right along with him, until he got a more serious, yet kind, look on his face.

"This will also be the best night you ever had."
