Chapter 4 - Celia's Home
I sat by myself on Celia's couch, trying to ignore her mother cooking cauliflower in the kitchen. The smell of cauliflower is probably one of the strongest ones out there. I shoved a pillow in my face and sighed. I wanted to talk to Celia so bad, but she wouldn't even hear me due to the fact that she's miles away at stupid school. I continued to watch the TV she had left on that was playing my favorite show. It was about a crime solving duo who are absolutely hilarious and probably pride themselves on making spectacles of themselves. They help the police department solve cases while the protagonist pretends to be psychic and his friend tags along. This piece of art is called "Psych." At least Shawn, the main character of the show, had his Juliet, or his girlfriend, with him. Where's mine? Not saying Celia's my girlfriend, but she is a girl and she's my friend. Just not like that. Don't just assume, remember? With my best friend gone, I decided to get a little rest before she came back. I lied my head on the pillow next to me and closed my eyes.
As I almost drifted off to sleep, I heard the door open and a happy presence fill the entire room. I popped my head up from the couch and saw Celia standing in the doorway with her backpack on her arm. "I'm home!" She smiled as she walked in the door, closing it right after her. I jumped up from the couch, excitedly, ran to her and hugged her. Man, I'm pathetic without her, aren't I? "You were gone for so long!" I whined, letting go of her and hitting her with my adorable puppy dog eyes. Celia chuckled, seeming to not be phased by my cuteness, and ruffled my hair. I could tell my face was heating up, but not because I like her, only because she's so cute. That's not the same thing, right? I fixed my hair and smiled a toothy smile at her. I heard footsteps from the kitchen and looked around to see her mother walking towards us. She completely ignored me, probably because she didn't see me, and unconsciously pushed me out of the way to hug her daughter. I stood awkwardly to the side like imaginary chopped liver. "Hi sweetie! Want a snack?" She asked. "Yes, please!" I cried out loud, dying of hunger.
I was starving all day, so I was really in the mood for a snack. But I guess I shouldn't have said that out loud, because even though Celia's mom couldn't hear me, Celia could still hear me. Celia refrained from laughing at my sudden outburst, her face a bit red from holding her laughter in. She looked back at her mother and just nodded. Her mother gave her a perplexed look and walked away, hopefully to make the snack. When she was out of earshot, Celia burst into laughter, clutching her sides. I joined in with her laughter, knowing it was no point to resist. Her laugh is awfully contagious. She could make the sternest person in the world laugh. Celia sighed and stopped laughing and smiled at me. "I really wanted food, so thanks." I said and winked, smiling. Celia chuckled and hopped onto the couch, staring at the TV to recognize one of her favorite shows, the one I was watching earlier. She turned to me when the theme song started playing and we both sang it together, on cue, as we stared into each other's eyes. That sounded creepy, but it wasn't like that.
But man, I couldn't focus on anything during that song except for her eyes. They were so stunningly beautiful. The bright, emerald green is just too much for my heart to take. She really was stunningly beautiful. Of course, I couldn't let her know that, because then she'd think I like her. Me? Like her? Of course not! ..Okay, I've been lying to you guys too much. I sort of think I do like her, but I haven't discovered my feelings for her yet and she probably doesn't even like me. So, I can't say anything to her. Besides, I'm imaginary and she's not, it would never work. There's probably some guy at her school she likes. Maybe he's studying to be a scientist or he's a professional softball player. Whatever, I don't like to think about that. All I know is that we're best friends for the time being, and it's probably better that way..for her.
I can't stand in the way of her true happiness, anyways. If she was with me, none of her family can see me. How would that even work? How would we have a wedding? Besides, she doesn't want to be with someone who isn't even real. She wants someone that everyone can see and everyone can label as a couple. Truth is, I want that too. I want people to be able to see me and label me as Celia's best friend, maybe something more. But a guy can dream. That'll never happen. Man, these are the times I wish I was real! As I stopped getting lost in my thoughts and snapped back to reality, I saw that Celia was looking at me, a concerned look on her face. "You're kind of staring off into space." She whispered to me. I focused my gaze on her, smiling awkwardly. "Sorry." I chuckled and rubbed the back of my neck. She chuckled back to me and started to go into the kitchen to get our snack.
After a couple minutes or so, she came back to the living room with the snack tray in her hands, filled with an assortment of fruit and vegetables. I forgot to mention, her mom is such a health freak. The only thing we usually have for snacks in vegetables, fruit, and sugar free stuff. Granted, they're good and it's food, so it's fine, but still. Celia probably hasn't had a piece of candy EVER. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration. Just a couple years, no doubt. She sat the plate down on the couch, acting as a divider between us, and grabbed an apple slice off of it for herself. She popped it into her mouth, and then I realized I was staring at her again.
I quickly looked at the tray of veggies and fruit, taking a carrot from it. Even though I'm imaginary, I can eat real food. I just take it off of the tray and it becomes invisible, just like me. I have no idea what the answer for this is. I know nothing about why I was born imaginary, who my parents are, etc. I don't even know how I can do half of the things I do, like make food imaginary. I just can't make other objects and people imaginary, but I can pick them up and stuff like that. So if you ever see a floating lamp or vase, that's probably me knocking it over like a klutz. I looked back at the invisible carrot I just made and popped it into my mouth, crunching it rather loudly. Carrots are really loud! I looked at Celia and got an idea. "Want to watch a movie later tonight?" I asked her, after chewing and swallowing my baby carrot. She nodded at me, stars in her eyes. "Yeah, that sounds great! We can go to the theaters, if you want." I smiled, getting excited just hearing the word "theater." The theater is such a cool place and since we all have to whisper in the theater, I get to talk with Celia all the time, since nobody hears us. "Yeah! That'd be great." I replied.
Celia looked out the window at her car and then looked back at me. "We would have to leave now though, otherwise traffic will get bad." She remarked, with a little sigh. I looked at her, and then to her car. "Want to go now then?" I asked, simply. She nodded, getting up from the couch. She grabbed her keys and opened the door for us. "Mom, Ja-" I could see her eyes widen with fear at almost announcing my name to her mother who doesn't know about me. I looked back at her and nudged her shoulder, signaling for her to stop. She cleared her throat and rephrased her sentence. "I'm going to the movies!" She cried. I smiled and let out a small chuckle. "Okay, sweetie, have a good time and be home at 6:00. Don't see anything R-rated!" Her mom yelled back to us.
Celia chuckled. "Of course not. See you!" She shut the door behind us and we walked to her car, getting in. Celia's car is a really nice car too! It's a nice shade of light blue, and she always has the windows down so that we can get some air as we drive. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the wind that gets in the car always messes up my hair, but that's the price you pay for getting air and breathing I suppose. Celia stuck the keys in the slot and we started to drive. Celia is also a careful driver, so you'll never get into an accident with her at the wheel. I looked at her and smiled. "Here we go!"
