Chapter 14 - Trying to Understand

I sat in my chair, my eyes glued to the small book in front of me. I'm trying to understand how Jack's people came to be in the world. This is the only recorded information that the world has, so that I know. I need to learn about him, and how he is now real. Was that man a magician? A wizard? Was he a magical being that's from Jack's world as well? All this information flooded through my head, whirling around in my thoughts.

I scanned the pages of the book, desperately looking for answers. Jack seemed so excited to learn more about where he is from, and I couldn't bear to disappoint him. He was so happy when I said I was going to study all night. I looked behind me to see Jack asleep on the edge of my bed. I smiled to myself as I looked at him. He looked so at peace and, dare I say, pretty cute. Wait, what am I saying? This has been going on for a while. I know I like him, but I constantly say he's cute and all..is that normal? I don't think it's creepy, is it?

I sure hope it isn't, because I'll say it every day. His raven-colored hair draped over his eyes, his breathing delicate and soft. It's a shame his eyes were closed, because now I couldn't see his beautiful, blue eyes. I got out of my chair, walking over to him. I knelt down to his level, still shorter than him, even when we're on our knees. I couldn't help but smile as I curled up next to him, putting my head on his shoulder. I always got flustered and nervous whenever he tried to put his arm around me or hold my hand, but now that he was sleeping, I could get a bit closer.

This all sounds a bit creepy, like I'm watching him sleep. Well, I am, but it's not like that! He's my best friend who suddenly turned real though a week ago he was still imaginary, that's all. Suddenly, I remembered the little book on my desk. I looked over at it, then at Jack's sleeping face. I sighed in a whisper and got up, sitting back at my desk. I got out my notebook, pen, and started studying again. Hopefully I'll have some answers for him when he woke up.

"Why'd you leave?" I heard his low voice ask. My eyes widened and I went stiff. "Jack. You weren't sleeping, were you?" I heard a chuckle from him. That meant no. I turned around, my crimson red face facing his. He was blushing a bit too. He still had his arm around the foot of my bed, his knee bent as he looked at me. His hair was messed up and I saw his eyes. He had the biggest smirk on his face, as well as a wink. Great, he'll never forget this. "That was cute, Celia." He smirked.

"Jack, I-I thought you were sleeping.." I cried, my blush worsening. He got up and walked over to me, towering over me like a giant. "I woke up and saw you in my arms. I couldn't spoil the moment." He extended his hand to me. "I appreciate you studying this book and working hard on finding answers, but take a break for now. It's late, let's do something and then get to sleep." I took his hand and got up. "What do you want to do?" I asked. He still hadn't let go of my hand. He held it in his gently and got a bit close to me. "Let's watch a movie. Your choice." I nodded, smiling. "Okay..Big Hero 6?" He jumped up and cheered, letting go of my hand.

"Yes! I love that movie, it's my favorite! It's Disney and anime combined." He explained. I chuckled. "Okay, I'll tell my parents that our study session is running a bit later than I imagined." Jack gave me a thumbs up and went to go prepare for the movie in the living room. I smiled and blushed to myself as I saw him walk out of the door. I followed him and picked up the phone. Now that the thought had come to me, this is the first time my mom and dad would really meet Jack. I hope my mom doesn't embarrass me, and I hope my dad doesn't kill him. He doesn't feel very affectionate towards the idea of me and a boy being alone together, for school or otherwise.

Jack sat down on the couch after getting the snacks and setting up the movie. I dialed my mom's number and waited for her to pick up. "Hello?" She greeted me, sweetly. "Hey mom! So, our study session is over, but we're going to watch a movie. So, when you and dad come home, Jack'll still be here." I explained. "Oh, okay, Celia! Listen, I know he's your friend, but he's still a boy. Be careful, okay?" I chuckled. "Mom, don't worry, I'll be careful. Besides, Jack isn't like that." I looked over at Jack and met his eyes. "He's more kind and soulful." I gushed.

Jack blushed and walked over to me. He took the phone out of my hand and started to talk to my mom. "Yes, Mrs. Schwartz, you don't have to worry about me. I will take good care of your daughter." His eyes widened. "I-I mean, I'll watch over her! Like, she'll be safe with me! Y-Yeah.." I heard my mom's laughter on the other line. "Okay, Jack, that's fine. I trust you. Could you put me back on the phone with Celia, I have to tell her something. Have a good night, see you soon." Jack nodded and gave the phone back to me.

"Honey, I like him. He's a keeper. If you ever want to date him, it's a yes from me." My cheeks turned red. "M-Mom!" "Okay, honey, see you later!" I hung up the phone and walked back over to Jack. "S-She thinks we're dating." Jack blushed. He put his arm around me. "Well, are we?" I looked up at him, bewildered and shocked. His eyes widened. "I-It was a joke!" He cried. I got the message and laughed, nervously. "Oh! Hah, sorry.." I rubbed my neck, sheepishly. Jack looked at me and held my hand. "You know, if what we think is true, I'm going to miss being real. It's nice to hold your hand."

I smiled, holding his as well. "Yeah, me too."
