Chapter 12 - The School's Introduction to Jack
Jack and I, walking down the street, both of us fully visible. This was absolutely crazy. I looked into Jack's eyes, remembering the little boy that pushed me off the swings. The bright, blue eyes that stared into my soul. He was invisible, how does he stand here with me, completely real? Anyways, I know this is crazy but now I need to figure out how to get him into the school without looking conspicuous. I turned to my friend. "Okay, Jack, we need to come up with your backstory."
He looked at me, his eyes lighting up. "You mean like character development? I love doing this kind of stuff! Okay, so, what should my name be?" He asked, rather excitedly. I sighed, slapping my own face. Why did I expect him to be mature and focused about this? "No, Jack, this isn't some OC creator kind of crap, okay? If you're going to attend school with me , you need to have a reason why you're coming to the school." Jack looked at me for a while before smiling.
"Here's one! I'm an Italian foreign exchange student. I came to Canada because I needed to introduce the land to good pizza-" "Be serious, Jack." I cut him off before he could add anything else. He thought again. "Okay! I'm a Japanese foreign exchange student, and I came to Canada to open a ramen house!" "Jack! Serious, now." I scolded him. This boy needs to learn some responsibility. Being cute won't get you everywhere! Wait, what did I just say?
He thought again. "Okay, here it goes. I'm a Korean foreign exchange student-" "JACK! Enough with the stupid foreign exchange student idea! It needs to be believable! Act serious for once, please!" I huffed. He looked a bit stunned that I raised my voice at him. I didn't want to, but if we're going to pass him off as a new student, we need a story that's believable. I didn't mean to make him have that sad look on his face. The one that slowly kills me inside. It feels like I murdered a puppy. "Jack, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it..you don't have stupid ideas, but I really want you to come to school with me, so we need to think hard about this story. I'm sorry." I apologized looking down at the ground in shame.
Jack lifted my head and gave me a warm and forgiving smile. "It's okay, Celia, I understand. I should leave the decision-making up to you, anyways. I have some trouble remaining serious in high-stress situations." He chuckled. I chuckled right with him, relieved he wasn't deeply offended or hurt by what I said. I need to watch my mouth, I can't risk hurting this puppy again. "Thanks, Jack. Okay, well, we could say that-" "Hey, loser!" A familiar voice screeched. I turned around, my eyes widening. Crap. Quinn Holton.
I looked at Jack. "Okay, remember June 6th of last year? I told you about that girl that insulted me for reading manga and drawing you on my notebook?" Jack nodded, because he literally remembers everything I tell him. "Yeah, that's her." Jack started to look a bit angry. He looked back at Quinn, her short, blonde hair draping against her chest. She was wearing sparkling clothes, as usual. Her handbag was probably worth more than me, and her makeup was overwhelming and frankly, she looked like a clown. But by the look in Jack's eyes, all he saw was a target.
He started walking towards her, his fists curled. Crap, crap, crap! I held onto his arm tightly. "Jack, what are you doing? Don't aggravate her, she'll never leave you alone." I know from personal experience. Let's just say, I'll never look at a toilet the same way again. Yes, she gave me a swirly. Classic bully move, huh? Jack looked back down at me, daggers in his eyes. "This is the girl that torments you on a daily basis and you want me to let her off easy?" I nodded, pleading for him to stop. Jack sighed. "Fine, let's go."
We walked up the stairwell to the school, Quinn and her squad blocking us off from the entrance. Lovely. Jack started to get a bit triggered again. "Excuse us." He jabbed at her. Quinn didn't listen, of course, why would she? She can't keep a thought in that little bird brain of hers. "Pee-lia, who is this hunk you brought with you?" Quinn batted her eyelashes, twirling her hair in her index finger.
I nearly threw up on the spot. Oh, dear God. Sorry, Jack. Jack stumbled back, his eyes as wide as saucers. I don't know if this disgusted him as much as it did startle him, but it definitely threw him back. "Yeah, he's, like, totally hot!" Cindy cried, fake swooning. Jack almost fell down the stairs because of how much he wanted to escape this situation. I held onto his arm to stabilize the poor boy. "Why do you care? This is the first time you've asked a genuine question about me and someone I'm with. Now, get out of my way so I can get to my class." I growled.
Quinn narrowed her eyes at me. "I don't really care what you say, I just want to know what he thinks." She walked down the stairs to Jack. She started getting pretty close to him, as he stepped back a bit, but Quinn followed him like the desperate girl she is. "So, what's your name, sugar?" She asked, flirtatiously. Jack thought as if she had asked him the important questions of the universe. He looked at me, at her, at Cindy, at Elle, at the building, at the ground, everywhere he could look, he did. He nervously stuttered before blurting out, "I'm Italian!" He started booking it up the stairs, almost pushing Quinn and her cronies out of the way.
I held back my laughter and ran after him, almost crying because of how much I wanted to laugh at this boy. Jack stopped running and fell on his knees, huffing and puffing like the Big, Bad Wolf. I came up behind him, laughing up a storm. "Holy crap, Jack, what in the world was that!?" I yelled, hardly breathing. Jack looked up at me, on the verge of tears. "I don't know, but we're going to have to go with the Italian thing, I guess."
A couple hours later, we were at lunch. We both decided that instead of the Italian act, we would say he's a transfer student from Tiger High and he moved here because he moved houses. The teachers had bought this story, and now Jack was officially part of the class. He was seated between me and Josh Lukes, Quinn's now ex-boyfriend. I'm pretty sure she dumped him the moment she saw Jack. I hope she doesn't think she's going to get together with him. That bird-brain doesn't deserve Jack. There I go defending him again..gosh, you're going to think I like him or something! Okay, well, I do..but don't tell him!
Anyways, we had sat down at my usual table, the one far in the back. "Your lunch is in your bag, Jack." I said, taking out mine. He zipped open his backpack and rummaged through the items in his bag. He pulled out the crumpled, brown, paper bag that I had packed leftover sushi, seaweed, and a chocolate in. His eyes lit up as he looked at the lunch I had packed, opening the lid carefully. "Whoah..this..is..AWESOME!" He screamed. Everyone stopped to look at him. I hid my face from the embarrassment that would soon wash over me. "Jack, stop screaming, I beg of you." Seriously, all day, when he was surprised by something new, he'd scream.
He rubbed his neck, sheepishly. "Sorry, CeCe." I blushed at the cute nickname he gave me. "It's fine..Jack." I failed at giving him a cute pet name in return. Sorry, Jack. As we were about to dig into our leftover sushi and seaweed, a hand slammed down on the table, scaring the ever-loving crap out of Jack. He nearly fell backwards, coating the ground with a fresh layer of Asian food. "Jacky-poo!" Quinn chuckled at him. Well, I'm glad I didn't call him that.
Jack looked back at Quinn. "Um..h-hey." He stuttered, weakly. Quinn lowered her eyelids, trying to appear seductive. "So, your name IS Jack. I only heard it in the classroom. Also, you said you were Italian and yet you transferred from Tiger High..?" Quinn questioned. "Um..I'm not Italian. You must've misheard me." He growled. Quinn cackled. "You're so funny!" She cried, punching his shoulder, playfully. I wish I had a camera to capture the shocked and disgusted look Jack had on his face at that specific moment.
Cindy looked at Jack. "You're lucky that THE Quinn Holton is talking to you, you know. She never talks to new kids!" "Yeah, she must think you're special!" Elle echoed. Jack didn't even have the heart to respond. "Um..okay?" He asked as if it were a question. "Well, I'll see you sometime soon, Jacky-poo. Laters!" She blew a kiss at Jack, walking off. Jack caught it and obliterated it in his hand. I laughed at the invisible act he was performing. "How funny, Jacky-poo." I teased him, smirking. Judging by the look on his face, he wasn't happy with his new nickname.
