◦ a particularly excited fan shouted this at the top of their lungs during a fan meeting and quickly drew his attention. the surprised face he made was captured and quickly made its way through the fan base. because of how adorable they found his reaction to be, they started yelling the name out when they wanted to catch his attention at events.

◦ he very quickly established himself to be the most level-headed of the group, including sterling. more than once he's ended up stepping in to sort something out or tag-teaming with sterling to keep the group in line. and it was during one of those incidents that the name was bestowed on him by saturn. because despite not being the leader of the group, he tended to be a lot more stern and sometimes harsh when amember did something wrong, just like a dad would be.

dylan is undoubtedly the calmest and most level-headed member of the group. whether that's because he's the oldest or because of how he grew up is unclear, but he is referred to as the dad of the group. even in the most stressful of situations you can usually find him looking at things very analytically so he can try and find the best resolution to the situation, which also makes him the go-to conflict resolutioner because of how non-biased he is in any given situation.

he still manages to be very caring, though he isn't the kind of person to be very vocal with his feelings, instead choosing to be very action-orientated. he's the kind of person who will give the last of his water to a member whose thirsty or automatically step forward to shield them from a particularly rowdy fan as opposed to loudly singing someones praises or jumping at the chance to offer someone advice. he aims to make people around him feel comfortable and safe, and he goes out of his way to make that a reality for anyone around him.

as far as his comfort and safety goes though, no one is really one hundred percent sure how he's feeling most of the time. while he isn't secretive, he definitely values his privacy. there's a lot about his past that is unknown to most people, and his feelings even more so. the way he grew up and the struggles his family had to go through ultimately resulted in him feeling like a burden so, he goes out of his way to keep things to himself now to try and keep anyone from feeling like they need to help him because he feels as if he should be able to deal with everything himself. and that especially manifests itself in the way he works.

for him, failure isn't an option. with so many people relying on him, he refuses to have things not work out. though the difference between him and sterling is that he only keeps that mindset with himself because he knows everyone else would have something to fall back on if things didn't work out. so, he goes hard and often purposefully overworks himself. since he already deals with imposter syndrome he spends a lot of time practicing, but it rarely makes him feel better or more qualified and often leads him to tears. and every time he makes a mistake or fails in his own eyes his fear of being abandoned is reinforced which originally made it hard to bond with anyone, but that didn't last for long.

the longer the group stays together, the more he finds himself slipping into an unusual sense of comfort where he finds himself worrying less and less about the fears that used to fill his mind. and though it's still hard for him to hold onto something he doesn't completely trust, he has more faith in the group than he does in anything else.

he was diagnosed when he was extremely young; essentially long enough that he couldn't remember a time when he wasn't dealing with it. as he got older the condition got a lot more manageable, and for a blissful few years, he didn't use his inhaler at all. but, as he started training harder and gained more stress it started becoming a problem. so, he started having to carry his inhaler with him everywhere again and is frequently seen using it.

dylan was born in seattle, washington to a newly widowed hwang chaewon. his father had died a few months into her pregnancy as a result of a car crash, leaving her reeling and wholly unprepared for dylan's eventual birth. she had already struggled to take care of herself before the pregnancy (which his dad helped with a lot after they'd gotten together), so things became twice as hard, but she tried her best. though things got much harder when she fell pregnant with ari (his little sister) after a one-night stand.

even though he was only ten at the time, he started taking care of his little sister soon after she was born. his mom almost immediately had to go back to work, so before and after school he would usually help watch and take care of the newborn along with doing everything else he needed to do. it was stressful and rarely left him time to go and do the fun things he wanted to do, but he never seemed to mind. he wanted to do whatever he could to make things easier for his mom since he saw how hard she had to work, even if that made things harder for him.

by the time he turned fifteen, he'd fallen into a routine of taking care of his sister most days and helping around the house and was planning to start working as soon as possible to make things easier for his mom and hopefully allow her to work less. but before he could do so, it was announced that the family would be moving to south korea to be closer to family.

the move wasn't hard. he only had one friend that he was leaving behind and ari was too young to know what was going on, so he quickly settled into a new routine and new lifestyle (especially since it left him a lot of free time. still, he ended up getting a job as soon as possible so he could give his mom a percentage of what he made. but, with her new salary that ended up being unnecessary, and he was allowed to do whatever he wanted money-wise, which is where his love for music started.

since he didn't have many friends at the time, so he ended up spending a lot of time online and ultimately ended up learning about kpop and almost immediately becoming fascinated. he'd always loved music but until then he'd never thought of music as a job he could ever have or something that he could ever be good at. but suddenly the dream was born. and he found himself working on music whenever he got the chance to. he wasn't yet sure if he was going to try and do anything with it, but it was the most freeing thing he'd done in a long time and the most fun he'd done in a while.

but just when he'd started taking it more seriously, a series of accidents happened in his family that ended up costing them a lot of money. everyone ultimately came out of it alright, but because of how much it had cost he ended up having to jump back into work. since he had graduated at the time he went full-time at the cafe he'd been working out and essentially gave up on his music dreams for two years so he could focus on helping his family.

one fateful afternoon though, he came across an advertisement for a company he'd never heard of that was holding auditions for a boy group, and he found himself drawn to it. so, he went home and asked his mom if he could give it a shot, and she said yes. the deal was that he'd try out, and if nothing happened then he'd just return to work. but he ended up getting offered a trainee spot right then and there, and he ended up accepting the offer.

it was rough in the beginning, and he thought about quitting several times. initially, they weren't making much and with things still being rough at home he started feeling guilty for being there, so he wanted to leave and start working again. but his mom wouldn't let him. she insisted that he do something he wanted for once, and since he wasn't one to disobey his mom he stayed. and eventually, it paid off.

he's still terrified that everything will fall apart one day, leaving him and his family with nothing. but he's also the happiest he's ever been. it's an odd mix of emotions that's constantly switching from one to the other. but, he's slowly learned that it doesn't have to be one or the other.

◎ before becoming an idol, dylan exclusively worked in cafes and coffee shops, resulting in him becoming quite the talented barista. and despite the constant barrage of shitty customers, he experienced while working as one, it was a job that he loved and a skill that he didn't want to lose. so, on days when the group doesn't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to go and do something, he'll usually end up making everyone their preferred coffee or tea order to start their day with.

◎ his music journey started with him teaching himself how to remix other people's songs using the secondhand equipment he got online. the first dozen or so of them weren't the best, but it didn't take him long to improve, and his better remixes ended up gaining him a decent amount of subscribers on youtube. he hasn't uploaded anything new to that account since his debut, but it's still gaining subscribers despite having never publicly named what it was (it currently has just over 200k).

◎ he started playing minecraft courtesy of his little sister. she became obsessed with the game in 2015, and after begging for months he ended up buying it for her. but, since he was the only one with a computer she could only play it in his room. and since he didn't trust a nine-year-old to be on his computer without him watching, he always supervised her when she played. even though she sucked at playing, he thought the game looked pretty cool, so one night he ended up trying it out himself, and he's been hooked ever since.

◎ he doesn't know how to drive and has no desire to learn how to. because of his family's previous financial status, they've only ever owned one car, and with everything his mom was doing each day, she was the one out of the two of them who needed it. he's been taking public transportation since he was a teenager and overall finds it a lot less stressful than he imagines driving is. so, he's never had a desire to learn how.

◎ milk is hands down his favorite beverage. he's been drinking at least a glass of it a day since he was a toddler; at first, because his mom forced him to, but eventually just because he wanted to. he's been asked why he enjoys it so much several times but has never been able to give a solid answer besides saying that it's 'healthy'. his favorite flavors are either whole milk or strawberry banana.

◎ somehow he ended up discovering and falling in love with french music for reasons he still doesn't understand. but he listens to it enough that he's picked up some of the language just through listening, and eventually he decided to try and properly learn the language. people even frequently joke that he likes french music more than the music he makes (which isn't true but he laughs at the jokes nonetheless.

◎ dylan is arguably the worst at honoring his limits when it comes to practicing. he's constantly trying to push himself because he always worries he doesn't measure up to the rest of the group. so, he is frequently found passed out in the practice rooms or holed up in his studio till very early in the morning. and because of that everyone tries to keep a very close eye on him; especially grey and sterling.

◎ dylan hates texting people, and borderline refuses to. he's never been able to give a concrete reason as to why he hates it so much, only citing that he doesn't understand how to do it, so he insists that people call him whenever they need something regardless of how short the call might be though he will still text people if needed, but he usually only does so with his younger sister and husband.

◎ homesickness is something he really struggles with. despite all the difficulties he and his family went through when he was younger, he's always had a very close relationship with them and the house they shared was a safe space for him, and being away from them and his childhood home has been hard for him. when those feelings get extremely overwhelming he tends to shut down for a while and become very secluded and standoffish until he can either get some time to himself or have a long call with his family.
