Kato sighed as he picked up the parchment. Every day the citizens of Rebirth, the land the 'monsters' were given, had to check in at the nearest post. Once they checked in they would get a paper that proved they had checked in, along with some other needless information, but today on the top of the page, the Human government informed Kato that he would be housing a monster for a year.
Rebirth wasn't the only town monsters lived in, but it was the main one, and when a monster moved into Rebirth they would be given guard of shorts, who would house them and make sure they followed the rules for a year. It was tiresome as the new monsters had all of it's belonging taken away and dropped off with only the clothes on their backs, at your doorstep.
"Teri!" Kato called, stuffing the paper into the back pocket of his worn-out jeans. He waved goodbye to the half asleep human who worked at the post and headed over to his blond haired sister. The slightly older monster glaced over at her dark haired brother, before looking back down at the crowded table of belongings taken from the last batch of new monsters.
"Kato," The Phoenix monster acknowledged, "Are you ready to go?"
"Yeah, but we got a newbie comin' soon."
"Please don't tell me they are another plant monster, our house barely survived that Flowey kid."
"Nope," Kato chirped, "Skeleton this time, named Stretch Swap, why do monsters always have weird names?" His sister shrugged and exited the small pavilion that housed the check in post. Stepping onto the dirt path, they made their way through the morning crowd.
After what felt like an hour, but was more like five minutes, they made their way off the main path and onto the narrow road that led to the small restaurant Teri owned. It was a run down building, much like every building in Rebirth, with a dirty red paint job that resembled dry blood in a way. Above the restaurant was a small studio apartment which the two lived in.
Teri unlocked the door, opening it with a ear shattering screech. "We can't forget to pick up some oil for that damn door."
There was a brief moment of silence as the two went off to get ready for the day, before the door screeched open once more, "WHAT THE HELL? THAT DOOR IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING!"
Kato smirked as he popped his head up from the counter that sectioned off the kitchen, "Heya Edgy!"
Edge, the head of the royal guards, narrowed his crimson red eyes at the teen, "For the millionth time, my name is Edge, not Edgy."
"And for the billionth time-"
"Is that even a word?"
"-don't bring Red in here on a fucking leash!"
With an annoyed sigh, Edge unclipped the leather leash from the spiked collar that was firmly attached to the short skeleton monster's neck. "I will have you know, again, that as the head of the royal guard, I can bring my pet-"
"Brother."
"-In here however I please."
"Oh my god!" Teri yelled from the back of the small kitchen, "Do you two have to have this conversation every goddamn day?!"
"Yes." The two males replied. They glared at eachother for a minute longer before Edge turned on the heal of his crimson boots, "Well, I will be back for Red at eight."
The door slammed shut behind the tall monster, "Good riddance." Kato muttered.
