08. Unlock My Heart
Eventually, Winter and Tails arrive at the cinema, by the time they arrive Tails' face is completely strawberry from having held hands with Winter the whole time, the wolf on the other hand was excited to see a film at this special place.
"Tails!" Winter says getting his attention.
Tails is lost thought still staring into space, as if he had just watched a shooting star go by. Winter sighs and decides the best way to get his attention is by lightly biting his ear... And get his attention it does...
"Waahhhhhhhhaaahhhaaaaa!" Tails shouts jumping up into the air.
Winter laughs, his reaction was unexpected, funny and adorable, "What the hell was that!?" The fox shouts.
"Oh I just thought it would be funny to watch you flip out... Pffffft hahaha" Winter says, sheilding himself as Tails punches his arm repeatedly, the fox squealing loudly.
"Not funny! Not funny! Not funny!" Tails shouts, clearly embarrassed by what just happened.
"Oh Tails it's not funny!... It's hilarious!" Winter says, laughing more as Tails continued punching and jabbing him.
"Gahhh! You jerk!" Tails shouts.
"Okay! Okay... Hahaha... I'm sorry!" Winter says through laughter.
Once Winter's laughing fit is over, Tails takes hold of the arm he punched and starts rubbing it, almost like a message
"You're going from punching my arm to messaging it... Interesting" Winter says, watching the fox squeeze his arm gently.
"I feel bad... That's all" Tails says, looking away from Winter.
"My arm doesn't hurt that much silly" Winter says, petting him on the head gently, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that, now that I know it makes you uncomfortable I won't do it again"
"T-To be honest, I don't care... And I knew you were trying to get my head out of the clouds, so it's alright I guess" Tails responds, scratching the back of his head nervously. He looks up at the wolf and embraces him, Winter wraps his arms around him.
"Come on silly, let's go watch a film" Winter says.
Tails smiles and nods, they both go inside and get tickets to see two films, one was an action film and the other was a mix of horror and romance... Which Winter found strange but decided to try it out with him anyway, the two buy some popcorn and go to the room where their first film was showing, pink and green neon illuminating the ceiling of the halls, bubble gum pink wallpaper with all sorts of unusual shapes made for a truly 80s feeling.
"So what's so special about The Dragon Of The East?" Winter asks.
"It's based on a popular story by one of my favourite authors! I watched a trailer for this an I instantly fell in love!" Tails responds, chuckling at the thought of how enjoyable it was going to be, "Oh and they might make a second one so if you enjoy this, we can see the second one together too!"
"Oh, alright, we can do that!" Winter responds.
"Wooo! Future plans with my best friend!" Tails says, doing a happy jump.
Winter jumps when he hears Tails call him best friend, he looks down at the sunny fox, his big tails wagging excitedly... Wasn't Sonic supposed to be his best friend?...
"I thought that title went to Sonic..." Winter says, confused as to why Tails was referring to him as his best friend.
When Tails hears Sonic's name, his ears droop and his smile turns into a moody frown, "Sonic's not my friend anymore... I just tolerate him for now"
"What? Wh... You know what, I'm not gonna ask, I don't wanna bother you"
"It's fine. Maybe I'll open up about it sometime, but all I'll say for now is that he... he scarred me..." Tails says, looking down at his butter covered popcorn.
Winter can tell something not so great happened between the two, but what was it? The pairing of Sonic and Tails was the most well known in the world, what could have driven such a huge divide between the two of them? Betrayal? Girl trouble? Something worse?
Winter couldn't help but feel a bubbling dislike towards Sonic building up now that he was hearing Tails was hurt by him. Tails holds Winter's hand again, snapping the thunderclouds over his head away.
"Let's try and stay positive... Okay? Forget about it for now" Tails says, smiling at Winter warmly.
Winter looks down at him for a second, he admired him for being able to stay strong even after whatever happened between them, he looks back forward and sighs.
"Okay... Sure..." Winter responds.
The boys head inside and take their seats, Tails can't help but notice the couples in the audience, wondering if him and Winter would ever be like one of those couples?... No... He'd make sure they became like them, he would make sure of it.
Eventually, after all the trailers and previews rolled along, The Dragon Of The East began, a film about a ninja who was basically a mercenary for hire and was working for an evil billionaire who wanted nothing more than to take over the world, but there was a band of young heros who stood together to stand up to him and put an end to his evil ways, a hero, a scientist, a hard hitter and a heroine. As they watched the movie, they both saw a relationship start to form between the scientist and the protagonist of the story.
Winter noticed Tails was glued to the screen, he smiles seeing he was enjoying the movie, so much so it looked like he forgot his Popcorn, Winter reaches for his popcorn and trays to take one... Tails snaps out of it when he notices Winter's hand moving towards it and he moves it away from him making Winter snicker.
"You seem really into it" Winter whispers.
"Hush you! You're breaking my immersion!" Tails whispers back.
Winter giggles at him and looks back towards the screen.
As the film goes on, they watch as the ninja gets backstabbed by the billionaire who hired him and sides with the heros who he fought so hard against... Which proved to be a good idea, because in the end the billionaire defeated... But in the process, the ninja lost his memories... All seemed lost, but scientist didn't give up on him.
Winter hears Tails sniffling and looks his way, the fox was actually crying at the fact the ninja lost his memories.
"Are you... Crying?" Winter says, finding it cheesy that he'd cry at this of all things.
"Yes" Tails sniffs.
"Oh my god" Winter says, trying to not laugh at how easy he was, "I learn something new about you every day"
The scientist eventually found a way to restore the ninja's memories and when he did, they finally got together and eventually got married... The film ends and when it does, Tails is a mess, he resonated with the movie... Much more than he thought.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah... That movie was beautiful" Tails says, hiccuping a little. Winter pets his back, trying to comfort his friend.
"I uh didn't know you were into gay romance" Winter says.
"I like all romance!" Tails says, wiping his face and blushing a little.
"Wait... You like girls and boys?" Winter asks, smiling at the realisation.
"N-No!... O-Okay... Maybe" Tails responds, rubbing his shoulder in embarrassment.
"Ho ho, that's the biggest surprise I've heard this year" Winter says, crossing his arms.
"Do you think I'm weird?" Tails asks, looking away from him.
"Hahaha! No, it's fine if your attracted to someone you like, regardless of gender! I don't care, it's what makes a good friend right?" Winter says, putting his hand on his head.
"Mm" Tails says, smiling at him.
You're so beautiful...
The fox jumps on him and hugs him, Winter laughs at him and hugs him back, his heart feels so melty, like a chocolate in the summer heat. His whole body felt warm, as if he was at peace, like all he needed was right there with him.
Nearly an hour later, it was time for them to seeing their final film... Stab My Heart, a film about a jackal who was insane for this girl he meets while at a tropical resort, so much so that he follows her back to her home and kills the people around her who make her life difficult.
In one scene her boss is being stalked by the killer after he allegedly, assaulted her for not meeting a quota. The killer ends up killing the boss by tying him to his couch and stabbing him up...
Tails visibly freightened by this shouts and grabs hold of Winter's arm, the wolf pulls him a little bit closer hoping it would help him feel more comfortable. While Winter found the movie cheesy and was silently cursing at the movie, believing he could do a much better job killing the boss, Tails was genuinely scared of it... It appeared intense violence was something he was visibly made uncomfortable by.
"If this stuff scares you why did you get us tickets for it?" Winter asks.
"I wanted to show you how brave I am... Heh heh" Tails says, visibly shaking.
"It's like you're trying to give yourself nightmares" Winter says, picking up his soda.
"I-I'm not!" Tails says.
Then the bosses wife comes home and discovers the body, a blood curdling scream errupts from her before the jackal kills her too, plunging the knife through her chest. Tails at this point can't take it anymore and covers his face, trying not to wee himself.
Winter sees he's refusing to admit he's uncomfortable and doesn't want to see anymore gore, but refusing to leave the theatre. The wolf sighs and pulls Tails on top of him, gently pressing his face into his chest that way Tails didn't have to look at the screen. The fox shouts in surprise and looks up at Winter, blushing because of how close they were to eachother.
"You obviously can't handle it. Just keep your head there until the film's over" Winter says to him, messaging his back.
"...Winter" Tails starts.
"Shhh" The wolf goes petting his head gently.
"Ok" Tails says, feeling disappointed in himself for not being able to stand the gore and guts.
Though his confidence was crushed, he thought it was nice of Winter to comfort him, to let him invade his personal space for his own comfort. The fox can feel his heart pattering against his chest as Winter continues to rub his back, the warm fizzy feeling returning to his chest.
He's... So thoughtful...
In the end of the movie, the jackal is finally caught after killing one of the ex-boyfriends of the girl he had set his sights on... However, the twist was... The girl knew about him, knew he was the one behind it, yet she helps him escape arrest and actually flees with him.
The ending made Winter angry enough, he actually started shaking with rage. Tails at that point was so immersed in Winter's chest, he found himself rubbing his face on him, he felt strong sort of like a bear. The wolf looks down at him rubbing his face in his chest and pets his head, Tails looks up at him immediately and sees the confusion on his face.
"Soooooo... Am I a pillow now?" Winter asks, completely unphased by the fox's behaviour.
"What?! No! I uh... You feel like uh... Buh- uhhhh" Tails says, realising he may have just been caught.
He waits for Winter to say something, but he doesn't he simply embraces him, the wolf assuming it was his way of coping with how terrifying the movie was for him. Tails lets out a relieved whimper and hugs him back... Someone warm and supportive, just what he needed at that moment.
After giving Tails a moment to recollect himself, the boys leave the cinema in search of their next destination. Since it was becoming a staple of their friendship, the two held hands the entire way to the restaurant Winter chose, specifically because they served the mint chocolate chip waffles he owed Tails. The wolf didn't seem to get flustered with Tails holding his hand, Tails wonders if Winter has ever been in love in his life, if he's ever wanted to love someone the way he loves him.
While they walk to the waffle house, they're both stopped for autographs. Winter apperantly had die hard fans outside of Nightstar City, which made him feel good. Meanwhile, Tails got more than enough people swarming him for selfies and autographs. The two eventually manage to escape the crowd of people who wanted to interact with them and eventually found the restaurant Winter wanted to go to and they sit down.
Tails looks out the window and back towards Winter who's head was on the table, his eyes closed, ears droopy. He looked tired, understandable, since both of them literally had to escape a mob of fans. Tails gulps, looking around, the place was empty, nothing but the buzz of the lights and a television with news headlines going off in the background.
The fox's phone goes off, he takes it out of his jacket pocket and sees Sonic is calling him, he growls quietly and declines the call looking back onward towards the exhausted white wolf. The fox feels his body move on its own leaving his bag on his seat and getting up, slowly walking towards Winter who seemed to be completely out.
Maybe... Just maybe... One little kiss...
The fox gulps and leans down, his chest swelling with worry, his lips quivering. Tails is almost at his cheek...
"Hello! Can I take your order?" A waitress in a pink suit says, approaching their table.
"Ahhhhh!" Tails shouts, falling onto the floor.
Winter opens his eyes when he hears Tails shout, he looks at the waitress and then back at Tails who's getting up from off the floor.
"Are you okay?" Winter asks.
"Yeah! Totally! I uh was just checking on you! You looked pretty beat!" Tails responds, giving him a thumbs up and a silly smile.
"Okay, thank you" Winter goes, then he turns his attention to the waitress, "Can I have Steak and Eggs please, he'll have the mint chocolate chip waffles"
"Certainly! And to drink?" She asks.
"Uhhh, I'll have some strawberry milk and he'll have..."
"Bah... Watermelon cream soda" Tails says as he sits back down in his seat.
"Okay..." The waitress says, jotting down what they said, "Okay boys, I'll be back with your food, you can get comfy!"
"Thanks" Tails and Winter say at the same time.
With that she walks away and Winter immediately looks towards Tails who's fidgeting with his fingers. He reaches over and puts his hand on Tails' forehead, the fox can feel his face getting warm when he does.
"Are you sure you don't have a fever?" Winter asks, concern on his face.
"Yep!" Tails responds almost immediately.
"You've been acting strange all day, I'm kinda worried about you ya know" Winter says back, sitting back down in his seat.
"I swear I'm okay, really... I just-" His voice trails off as Winter looks at him, he finds it difficult to make eye contact with the wolf for some reason.
Winter wonders if he's sleep deprived, maybe that was why he was behaving so weird today, he had sleeping powder, what if he slipped some in his drink so and he took a short nap... No! He's a friend! Friends don't do that to eachother!... Still he can't help but wonder why the fox was behaving so strangely, his heart ached, his chest felt like it was going to freeze.
"Tails I can't help but feel like I've done something, are you sure it's not me?" Winter says, looking down at the table.
"No you didn't do anything, I'm sorry-!"
"Then what's going on?! It feels like I'm ruining your day!" Winter says, trying to not cry.
"You're not!-" Tails says, he runs to Winter and squeezes him tightly, "When... When I'm with you I feel... So warm, so confused... So... Weird. So happy, yet so scared..."
"What does that mean?" Winter asks, looking down at him.
"I don't know! But I do know that I like being around you, you make me feel so melty inside, you're energising, just like when I first met you" Tails says, tears welling up in his eyes.
Tails takes his hands and puts them on his chest, Winter can feel how erratic his heartbeat is, like something was eating at him from the inside. Winter was beginning to understand now just how confused his body was.
"Y-You feel it right?" Tails says, locking his gaze with Winters.
"Yeah... Like there's something going on in there..."
"There is something going on in there Winter... I don't know how to explain it to you, I don't know how to convey myself properly right now, I'm a mess-"
Winter smiles and moves his hands to his face, "...What if I helped you figure it out?"
"You'd do that?" Tails says, sniffling quietly.
"It's what friends are supposed to do right?" Winter responds, gently bringing him close so Tails could lay on his shoulder.
Ahhh he's so nice it hurts...
"Okay" Tails responds, closing his eyes as he enjoys the wolfs embrace.
Winter smiles, laying his head on Tails' and looking up at the television, looking at the news headlines, the death of the bat the Four Seasons killed a month prior was still unsolved... As expected.
Eventually their food arrives and they enjoy a late lunch together, Tails loves the waffles so much he begs Winter to pay for another serving, the wolf reluctantly agrees but only if Tails had a salad the the next time they met. They spend some time walking through Fleetwood, appreciating it's beauty... But for Tails, it was more than just the city he was interested in, finding it difficult to take his eyes off Winter the entire time.
Soon the sun starts to set and it's time for the boys to return to the metropolis, while they wait at the train station. Tails looks up at the wolf, his whiskers blowing around slightly in the wind, it was late, the night lights were on, the train station is much calmer compared to the morning when they arrived there.
"Attention Starlink Passengers, the next train to arrive on Track 3 is 21:17 Express Train for Nightstar-Kennedy Station, calling at Riversby, Clayton, Windchurch, Seishisuba, Coventry Parkway, Coventry, Soga, Gakushima, Shin-Sakura and Nightstar-Kennedy Station. This train is formed of 10 coaches"
As the Japanese announcement plays, Tails finally pops the question he's been wanting to ask Winter for the longest time...
"Hey Winter. Have you ever been in love before?" Tails asks, playing with his hand.
Winter looks down at him, the wolf about to eat a piece of chocolate he pulled out of his pocket. He sees Tails' curious eyes waiting for his answer and sighs.
"I... Don't understand love. At all" Winter responds.
"Why not?" Tails asks, shocked that he would say something like that.
"Because it's one of those emotions that's either a wild tiger baring it's fangs or a harmless mouse that can't even do anything" Winter responds.
"Love can be as powerful as a lion though. Trust me, when you fall in love you'll understand" Tails goes, putting his hand on his shoulder.
Winter looks down at him, an unsure frown on his face, "Do you love me?"
Tails' face turns red immediately, "Uh um... As a friend yeah"
"But we haven't known eachother that long yet" Winter responds.
"I know, but I love all my friends! Amy, Knuckles, Blaze, Cream, Shadow... Sometimes"
"Sometimes?" Winter asks, cracking a smile.
"He's a jerk but he isn't all bad" Tails explain, laughing nervously.
"What about Sonic?" Winter asks, wondering why he didn't mention him.
Tails' expression changes again when he hears Sonic's name. Winter notices him balling his fists and immediately feels bad.
"Sorry I forgot-" Winter starts.
"Don't apologise" Tails says back, he takes a deep breath and takes Winter's hand leading him to a bench on the platform, "To save myself the trouble let's just talk about it now. You're the first person I'm opening up to about this... Just so you know. Can I count on your confidentiality?"
Winter looks down, at him and puts his hand on top of his, smiling gently at him, "Sure... I can keep a secret"
