prologue
Rhaenya Targaryen, a girl that's what she was. She was a stupid girl as people would call her, but what would a fifteen-year-old do? She was a child, a child bride if anything like her sister and her mother. How do all three women in her family meet the same faith?
The princess was born on April 114 AC, the room was full of not just one, but two wailing sounds that ran through the castle. Her twin brother was born first, Daeron Targaryen, then her... Rhaenya Targaryen. Why in the world was a princess named after her half-sister? Who let this happen?
The King did.
Why would a King name his third daughter after his eldest daughter? Was the question of the Smallfolk. The only assumption that people could come up with was that the princess looked similar to Princess Rhaenyra.
Rhaenya.
Rhaenya had it hard to believe that her half-sister would do such a horrid act towards them. She never had heard her sister talking badly about any of her other siblings. Her mother would call her a stupid little girl, for falling into Rhaenyra's traps. This only made her relationship with her mother worse. The lies, the corruption, Alicent Hightower held upon her children.
While some might say that King Viserys neglected his children, Rhaenya was the eye-catcher of the family. She brought it upon herself to try to create a relationship with her father. At the age of five, the girl would bring books to her father's chambers and the two would read together.
She had a father who she had thought loved her, the girl believed she he had loved her. Or was she the daughter of a King who had forgotten her name? Many speculated the only reason Viserys accepted and loved that child was, his old age couldn't see the difference between Rhaenyra and Rhaenya.
It is hard to state what kind of relationship she had with her mother, knowing the way she had treated her eldest half-sister, she feared her mother. Servants and maids have stated it would be seen that Rhaenya ran to her sister Helaena for the most part.
That's who she cried to, when she needed to cry that's where she went when she didn't know what to do. Helaena Targaryen looked out for her sister more than anyone else did in King's Landing. The mother figure stood by her side, not for power, not to manipulate her, but to hear the words of what she had to say.
Being separated from Daeron at the age of 8 didn't help the young Princess, a piece of her was missing. When Otto Hightower heard the words of the relationship between Rhaenyra and Rhaenya, he realized it should've been both of the twins should've been sent to OldTown.
The Princess was known to get in trouble a lot with her mother, maybe she was screaming for attention. Who knew what went inside the mind of the princess, she was insanely skilled with multiple talents like writing and memorizing. One that shocked everyone was the skill of sword fighting.
That made the Queen Consort upset, and annoyed, one of her daughters was quiet and played with bugs. The other, who rather not learn her duties as a wife, but see the odds on a battlefield.
Things that made her mother look bad, and she got in trouble, Alicent rather have a daughter who would be more ladylike, not a girl who would join her older brothers to train.
The Queen worried for her daughter, knowing she was not ready to be fit to be a wife, knowing her daughter was stubborn and was not nearly ready to be a mother.
The naïve princess never thought she did anything wrong when she trained alongside her brothers or even goofed around to have some fun as a princess. She knew it wasn't ladylike, but what about the great warrior queens like Queen Visenya? Rhaenya was not afraid to show her strength on the training grounds.
All her mother ever wanted perfection from her, to act like a princess, which she did when times were needed for it. Her mother was looking out for her reputation, yet knowing sure damn well her daughter had ruined it. Little did the Queen know her daughter observed every little thing she did. Rhaenya was watching her mother's every move... and she knew what her mother hated and liked. She knew her mother more than anyone... an observer
Rhaenya had no care about her reputation or her life, it wasn't as if she would be the one sitting on the Iron Throne anytime soon. A man like Ser Criston Cole was not over the rejection of Princess Rhaenyra. He was a man of fools who knew what he wanted to do from the start. The minute he saw Princess Rhaenya in the training he tried his best to push the nine-year-old's buttons.
Why would a grown knight want to anger a child off, well again it was her name. He sure knew her name, she knew that he knew her name. Yet he purposely called her Rhaenyra to tick her off, or even a stupid girl.
"My name is Rhaenya Targaryen," She would correct the Knight multiple times, even begging in front of her mother to make him call her by her correct name.
Nothing.
Multiple times she wouldn't be heard by others, she would be pushed away, why?
Because she was a girl?
Why?
Because her name pissed everyone off.
Was she an object or a person? What was she?
All because of a name, her name, she was a princess, the daughter of a King! She must have a voice, she will marry a lovely prince who will take great care of her! No.
Entering her teenage years, she was even more rebellious, she learned to sneak out of the castles, and find ways to get to Dragonstone without anyone knowing. No one was stopping her, all she had to do was her studies and she would be free.
She was a girl of free will until she got married and she would be her husband's property. Until on her 13th name day, she was eavesdropping, on the council meeting and she heard her name being brought up. She was not only just a daughter anymore, she was going to be a political pawn for her mother.
Names like Jacaerys, Cregan, and Aemond were all brought up. Her mother had already married her sister to her eldest brother... so why doesn't the Queen save her daughter...
Because she's her mother's political pawn. Jacaerys is a bastard in her eyes... alongside with Jacaerys being Rhaenyra's son. Cregan Stark lives in the North— and it would've been too late to foster her there.
And Aemond. Her brother, classic Targaryen customs to marry brother and sister. He was older than her by four years... not bad of an age gap. She wasn't close to him... she was just there. They were both just there. They barely acknowledged each other... how were they supposed to produce an heir?
When Rhaenya had heard the confirmation words of her mother... that the marriage between her and Aemond would be settled in the next year she had lost it.
Her brother. That was her one-eyed brother. Her brother... and now to be her soon-to-be husband...
That might've been the worst of it all for the young princess... Over time, she learned to accept that people were going to hate her, no matter how many times she reminded a person of her name, she would be to the world Rhaenyra. There was no point in correcting a person, they weren't going to learn.
She was the babe that shouldn't have been born, the babe that was the mistake of the family. She knew that, but why keep reminding her? To keep her suffering, the guilt that she held, maybe if she didn't exist her family would've been happier.
Rhaenya would never know. She was just the stupid Targaryen girl in their eyes, nothing more than the stupid version of Rhaenyra Targaryen.
She was a girl that shouldn't have been born at all.
