The only mistake that JOAN HARRINGTON had made during her entire and pathetic life, was to please her mother by following every single rule she laid down for her.

Or at least that was the first, because Joan wasn't allowed to be wrong. She had to be perfect. There was no one who didn't expect her to be. After all, she was cheerleader's captain, class president, the teacher's favorite and, as if all that wasn't enough, she was stupidly nice to anyone who put in front of her.

If one had to pick the perfect teenager to portray Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, then that would be Joan. Other people's wishes came before her own, and she was very compliant to her mother's orders, since she was sure that she knew what was best for her future.

However, Joan was aware that some adrenaline was missing from her monotonous life. And altough she didn't exactly expected to be involved with her brother in the adventures of some brats and a girl with powers against monsters from a Hawkins-parallel dimension, that did give her a new perspective.

She no longer wanted others to pull the strings. She didn't need a puppeteer; she wasn't an object. Her voice must be heard.

That's how, during one summer night, she met him. Well, actually, that was the very first time she saw him with different eyes.

EDDIE MUNSON was used to getting disapproving looks, sometimes accompanied by a few name-callings. He didn't expect people at Hawkins High School to change their minds overnight. But then, someone showed him how wrong he was by seeing him genuinely and not in a derogatory way. He was shocked to discover that one of the school's most popular cheerleaders actually had a heart.

Eddie was sure that everyone who was popular had the same cliche personality. He convinced himself that he should hate them as much as they hated him. Until one night he almost ran over Joan Harrington and his life was never the same.

Furtive glances they shared every time they were in the same place; clandestine meetings that no one had the slightest idea about; and a secret language that only they knew.

Theirs was a love story strong enough to dethrone Romeo and Juliet. They were ready to chart their own destiny and change the unhappy ending that Shakespeare's characters had come to, so their only task was to keep their relationship as a secret until they finished high school. After that, their future lay far away from Hawkins.

The little detail they didn't count on, was that the Upside Down hid a new enemy. And this one might be even more dangerous than the others Joan and her brother's friends have faced in the past.
