16. A Good Co-passenger

Xeria's P.O.V

The next morning, I wake up to find an empty sofa, which means Khaos is already awake.

Not bothering to call for him, I begin to get ready. I have to go and pick up Mom today also, and if Khaos wants to accompany me, he will let me know.

After getting dressed up, I look at myself in the mirror dressed in a puffy sleeve white cotton blouse with wide leg camel pants.

Picking up the chain, I try to untangle it. It's just a single simple chain; why is it so complex?

"What are you up to?" Khaos asks, walking behind me, all dressed up and ready.

"Untangling this chain, where were you?" still busy with the chain, I ask him.

"I wake up early every day, and give me that." snatching the chain from my hands, he replies, and I just look back at him.

"Don't try too hard; simple efforts themselves are fine." Uncliping the hook, he turns me so that I'm facing the mirror and pushing my hair to one side of my shoulder.

"What are you doing?" I ask, and he just places the chain on my neck.

"Helping each other is the first step, right?" he says, stepping closer, and I see the both of us in the mirror.

"So, you have prepared a to-do list now?" I comment, leaning my head against his chest.

"Well, being organized really helps," he replies, wrapping his arms around my waist.

I took a look at the ring on his finger, and suddenly Potato comes running inside and poses besides the two of us.

"A perfect family, what do you think?" Khaos chuckles, and I just look at the mirror.

Certainly, he is right; we look perfect here, but the keyword is look-what about the insides?

"We should get going." Averting my gaze, I free myself from his grip, and he just nods in response.

"Potato, stay with Aunt Nora today, ok, and behave; I don't want to hear any complaints from her side, ok?" patting his head, I instruct him, and he just wags his tail.

After informing Aunt Nora and giving Potato a final hug, we leave for my home.

"The pictures turned out better than I thought they would," I comment, scrolling through the wedding pictures.

"Yes, they're great; you were looking really good, so it's natural that the pictures will be beautiful as well." Khaos says with a straight face, controlling the steering.

"Excuse me, you didn't even compliment me that day, and now you're acting like a whole green flag husband." Looking at him, I roll my eyes.

Look at him, saying all these things with a straight face.

"Well, you weren't looking in the best mood either; I didn't want to poke the sleeping bear," he chuckles, pinching my cheek with one hand.

"Who is a bear?"

"You are a bear, a grumpy bear." holding his fingers in a tight, painful grip, I retort.

"I should be grateful that you returned, and I had faith in you that you would never make an irrational decision like that," he adds, surprising me.

"You were aware of it?" I ask him, half-surprised.

"Evander informed me that you were running around before you made it to the aisle," he replies, and I free his fingers.

"I was upset, angry, and heartbroken; I felt that I was betrayed, not that it has gotten any better now." Looking out of the window, I mumble.

"I wanted to tell you everything, but your parents stopped me from doing so, and trust me, I asked them to postpone the wedding as well," he says, taking my hand and brushing my knucles with his thumb.

"I don't know what to say, but it was Ivan who helped me make the right decision; otherwise, I don't know what I would have done." I reply, leaning my head on his shoulder, and once again he clenches his jaw at the mention of Ivan's name.

"What's with this Ivan popping around you in a situation like this every now and then?" he says, his eyes on the road.

"Oh, now I get you were jealous that day." laughing, I lean up.

"Ivan is my childhood friend, just like Quentin; the only difference is that we began to get along only when we started high-school; before that, we used to compete for everything all the time, so we didn't really get along that well, but now that we're mature, it's a healthy friendship," I add, still laughing.

"How am I supposed to know all this?" He says, now all embarrassed, though it is barely showing on his face, but I can see it.

"Seriously, Khaos, just ask me if you don't know about something," I say, looking at his cute little embarrassed face.

"Wouldn't you react in the same way?" he asks, running his fingers through his hair.

"No, I won't, because I know this may sound rude, but only insecure people get jealous or people who don't trust each other. Trust isn't something that I should be talking about now, but now that we're actually married, just always have faith in me. I will never do anything that will make you feel insecure or untrusted, and the same goes for you, ok?" I finish up giving my speech, and after realizing what I have just said, I mentally face-palm myself and squeeze my eyes shut.

But then, to my surprise, he says the most unexpected thing.

"I promise, from now on, I will never repeat this." I open my eyes and look at him, and he just smiles and concentrates on driving.

After that it didn't take long before we reached home.

"You don't have to take me here every day, ok?" Mom says, resting on the hospital bed.

"If not me, then who?" I retort, and she just shakes her head.

"Driving back and forth every day, you're going to wear yourself out," she says, giving a serious, listen to me expression.

"No, it's not tiring at all; in fact, I didn't even realize the drive home; Khaos gave me nice company." I reply, remembering the conversation we had this morning in the car.

"When the co-passenger is good, then the whole journey becomes way easier, dear." smiling, mom keeps her hand on mine.

That's a really deep thing, she just said out of nowhere.

"Ms. Lea," Khaos says, stepping inside the room.

"It's mom for you, son; how long are you planning on being formal?" mom says, with a smile.

"Mom," Khaos says, nodding. I look at him as he takes a seat beside Mom, across from me.

A family is what has always been missing in his life, and now that we're married, he can have one.

Is it right for me to think this way?

Is this the best thing that can happen to all of us?

"I will get going now, mom. Take rest, and if you need anything, just let me know," Khaos says, standing up.

"Take care, son," mom smiles, and after giving me a nod, he walks out of the room.

"Go back with him," Mom says, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"No!" I retort.

"I want to sleep, so just go back now," she says, closing her eyes.

Seriously, this woman.

Stepping out of the room, I hear Dad and Khaos talking in the corridor.

"Don't worry about anything, dad. I will manage everything at your company as well. Just stay with mom, ok?" Khaos says.

"Thank you, son. I can rest assured with Xeria and you here," dad replies.

I guess not everything is falling apart; something is just getting in place now.

Khaos is right; helping each other is the first step. It's not the time for me to hold onto things; I just have to take a step forward, and if Khaos is ready to walk a mile, then I think that I can also take a step ahead.

The journey will be perilous, but now it can become a little easier if I reach out for a helping hand rather than solving everything alone.

"Khaos, let's go back together," I say, grabbing their attention.

"Mom is taking rest, dad; you also take care of yourself; don't overexert yourself, ok?" I say, hugging him.

"Yes, honey," dad says, patting me on the back.
