3.
My keys jingled as I unlocked the door to my home. The place where I would be greeted by a loving wife with a hug and a kiss. The place where I wanted to come to when I was away to eat a hot meal and then crash on my bed of softness. The place where none of that happened.
When I opened the door, I was greeted by the scent of dinner and the warmth that swarmed around me and embraced me in a relaxing hug. I took my shoes off along with my coat and put them away in the closet that was by the front door.
"Finally home," Neena said. I looked over at her and gave her a smile but she gave me the complete opposite.
"Hey, mama."
"Why do you look that? Are you hiding something from me?"
Krishna looked at me and then back at Neena. "Oh, no. I'm just not feeling well. Anyway, I have a ton of homework to do so I think I should go do that now."
I shuffled his hair. "Run along then. Go get to it."
Neena just stared at the both of us with her eyes squinted. They became beady in the matter of seconds and I could've sworn that the devil was upon us. Krishna did his very best to escape the glare and when he did, it was just me and her.
"Where are the items I told you to pick up?"
I looked down at my hands.
Damn it.
I forgot to grab the groceries. "I'm sorry. It just slipped my mind. I had a long day at work and-"
"Ha!" She laughed at me. "Long day at work? All you do is edit papers! That's not real man work. Ta, I bet you can't even call that work! More like some hobby!"
"I bring money home, don't I? I'm the one that put food on the table!"
"Yeah but I cook! If anything, I do harder work than you. I cook, clean and I make sure that Krishna is doing well. All you do is sit on your ass all day and then come home to sit on it some more as if you're doing real man's work!"
"I sit my ass down on the furniture that I bought with my own damn money! Everything in this house, I bought with my job! The job that pays me really well actually! The job that got that expensive ring on your gremlin looking fingers! So I advise you to shut your damn mouth because you would still be at your parents place if it wasn't for me!"
"Watch who you're talking too! You're making a big mistake right now! If I leave then who is going to take care of Krishna? What is your family going to think when you mess up the only good thing that has happened in your life?"
I started to put my shoes back on. "You were never a good thing," I muttered.
"What did you say and where are you going? You better be going to pick up those groceries!"
I grabbed my coat.
"Lucas!" I zipped up my coat and turned away from her. "Lucas!"
She kept calling my name and I could hear her running up on me so I turned around to face her. "This was a mistake! Marrying you was a mistake!"
"Then why did you do it?"
"I did it for my family, for you! I didn't want this life with you but I had no choice! Waking up next to you is not how I pictured my life!"
"You always say that but then you come right back and tell me that you love me and that you're sorry!"
"Not this time!" I swung the door opened and made my way down the stairs.
"Oh, so you wanted to be with that man! The one you tried to keep hidden!" I stopped. "Don't forget, I know about your secret, Lucas! I know everything! You didn't marry me for me, you married me for you and your family! We made a deal remember? I keep my mouth closed and you be my husband."
"Could you shut the hell up talking to me already?"
She spat and flipped me off. "Go to hell!"
"I would love to because at least I wouldn't have to see you anymore!"
She slammed the door and I sighed. I walked in the snow that crunched beneath my feet and went into my car to collect myself.
It was always the same bullshit since we got married. She always had the power over me and I was always her bitch just because she had a secret that could've possibly ended my life. We would argue, I would storm out but in the end, I would come back in and kiss her toes.
Not this time.
I started up my car and I was on my way to finally do things my way. It was about time that I lived in my truth and forgot about all the things that held me down. What better way to forget than going to a gay club?
