Chapter 4 - I Lead
"We meet again."
I was in the middle hours of my shift when the deep voice called out. I turned my heel, towards the sound and found Rex. Unlike the other day, today he was in a grey jacket over a white T shirt, standing at the either side of the counter, holding a subtle smile, carrying the same aura.
"How did you find me"
Rex turned towards the door and back towards me, "I pointed you here."
I cocked up my eyebrows, "Is it that, you were following me?"
The smile in his face was gone, altered with a serious countenance. As, I kept studying through him, he leaned over to the counter, and pulled his face closer to mine. So close, I could count the spokes in the blue gradients of his eyes. While he shuffled his gaze through me, I realised I shouldn't have poked him. He read through my nervousness and spoke out in a huskier tone, " I don't follow, honey. I lead."
Reflexively, I gulped. He sensed it and his smile quirked up into a grin, "Ain't you hungry?"
"Huh!"
"Let's grab a nice bite."
He yanked away and shuffled his grey jacket, "Let's go!"
The daze got altered into reality within a snap, as if he kept me under hypnotism, " Wait, I can't move out right now."
He stopped and raised his eyebrows at me, "Why?"
"Um....I am not allowed to go out during working hours."
"No one would say a word, if you walk out with me."
"I..I am in my uniform. N..Not fit for....um.." Damn this stubborn tongue of mine.
Rex narrowed his eyes, and scanned through my whole height, " Still sexy!, Let's go" He turned his heel to leave
Pull up, Madeline. Pull up your guts, "I am NOT coming with you."
I said out the words louder and it did have an effect on him. He froze in his steps and turned towards me, letting out a sharp exhale.
I curled up my fists, in an attempt to control myself from falling into a trance yet again. As, he leaned against the counter, i yanked back until the shelves behind me hit my back.
He sensed through the tension and his eyes turned gentle, while his face held the same coldness, "Is it that, you are scared of me?"
I cleared my throat, "I'm not"
I wanted to look away from him but, that would have made me look weaker. He shuffled a pensive gaze through me before he spoke in a gentle tone, "I won't even touch you, unless you say. And this is not even a date, if that is what you are thinking of."
I could feel my cheeks burning, as he smiled again, and maybe he was able to read it well. I was struggling hard, to show that I don't care, I never did. But, the turmoil within me was loud enough to hide. This is man surely was hard to decipher. He was calm yet calculated. He carried that fearful charm without giving out any damn effort. One thought, that my mind wandered to, since the day, I saw him. He was definitely someone more than what he assumes himself to be, or maybe he fancies keeping that part to himself. Why? I should be asking. But, I am not. I could feel my excitement growing at his presence. I was getting addicted to the mystery.
I followed him to his car, as he opened the door to the front seat, for me, like a gentleman. I was well aware, I am crazy enough to go on a lunch (it's not a date) with a man, who I practically knew nothing about. But, I still complied. I hopped inside the car, in my white tees and simple jeans, in contrast to that, he took the steering in a well groomed suiting. As he started the ignition, he looked at me, and frowned playfully. I realized, I was staring at him the whole time. I immediately shifted my face towards the front. He giggled, maybe because he caught me red handed. I kept being stupid near him.
It was a forty five minutes drive, before the car pulled over near a fancy restaurant. What the hell on earth is he trying?
"There you go." he mentioned
I was unable to move my eyes of the flashy lights, still seated inside the car. Not because, I was mesmerized, but I was bamboozled.
"I remember you promised me, a nice bite, not a course meal."
Rex looked over to the restaurant, "A nice ambience, makes it better. Let's get in.
He climbed off the car, and opened the door for me. I got down the car, and walked along with him towards the door. As I walked inside the restaurant, I could feel stares on me, sure it will, I was wearing a staff uniform to a fancy restaurant. Suddenly, Rex slowed down his pace and looked down at me. I did not look up. He reached out his warm hands for mine.
"You know what?" he mused, "I guess, you were right. Let's grab a bite."
Maybe he proved himself yet again. He carefully held my right palm and folded his warm palm in the shape of my hands, as he leaded me, outside the restaurant. There was a sense of safety and peace within the warmth, I can't deny, even when, I struggled to. I don't know, what I was doing. I don't know whether it's right or wrong. I don't even know whether this is the truth, or is a game. But,........I was letting someone in my heart, which I struggled to keep locked up, for my own good.
Other side of the city
The rustling sounds echoed through the dead silent, pitch dark alley, as the guy from the bar ran through the dirty alley, watching every corner of the alley, making sure no one notices him. As he made his way, in a comparatively faster pace, he got stopped by the rusted gate in front of him. He reached his destination. He did a last scan through the surrounding, before he entered. He took small steps forward and stopped near a group of men. Taking in a gulp, he turned his neck towards the illuminated part of the small room to see his boss standing at one corner of the dark room , facing the wall.
" I should have known, you'd fail."The boss replied in a dead voice.
he kept his face held down, shivering out of fear, "It was hard, when he is there."
" You failed to get a girl, you have already handled once. Losers!"
"I was almost there." he replied in a meek tone.
Within a split second, the boss flounced and without a word, pierced a bullet through the man's head making him collapse on the floor in no time. As the gunshot echoed through the old worn out room, the bright yellow light hanging of the old ceiling, started to swing and similar features from the past started to reflect. A cold rage kept pouring off his countenance. Corvett, threw the gun towards one of his men, keeping his eyes fixed on his prey.
He pulled in a sharp shaky breath and closed his eyes in an attempt to cool his anger. After a short while, he widened back his eyes and his rage altered with a relaxed expression.
"Clear this mess" He commanded in a relaxed tone, "And I don't want anyone to return to me, with these words, again. Better, you rot within your enemy. And, I won't stop, until I get both of them, beneath my feet."
