Chapter 2 - Stay Sober
Flight Club,
The lights flashed out colors and loud music rocked the glasses on the counter as Jacob walked inside the club, located at the extreme corner of the city. The place irrespective of the remote location, always remained filled with people of different age groups, having alcohols overpowering their blood and grooving as no one is watching. Jacob walked near the bar, which was in comparison the most illuminated space. As he leaned over the counter, his fair skin shone yellow, below the light.
"Double scotch on Rocks." He ordered and leaned his back against the counter, facing the dance floor.
"One scotch, neat!"
Jacob turned his neck towards the source of the sound and found Madeline standing near him leaning towards the bar. Her straight hair flown down loosely on her bare back, of the backless black top. He let out a smirk and moved back his stare towards the dance floor.
"Wow!" He scoffed, "Someone is going to harsh on herself. Again."
Madeline turned her heel towards him and let out a sigh, "Someone badly needs to clear her mind. Again.
Jacob laughs, "Are you okay? "
"Oh! Definitely I am." She replied lacing her words in sarcasm.
"don't be such a spoil sport, sugar baby."
The uneven pitch of the voice dragged their attention towards the source. It was a man, his eyes filled with lust while he was talking his way into getting someone engulfed into his in- vain effort. It was no one else but Clare. He did seem to have succeeded taking her attention but on a wrong foot. She seemed like she was ready to create a blood bath over the dance floor.
Madeline mused, "Looks like someone is enjoying a nice company."
"Tsk!" Jacob remarked, "poor boy"
Madeline turned her neck towards Jacob.
"Don't look at me. He messed up, with the wrong lady."
They both burst out into a cackle, loud enough to drag the man's attention towards her. As soon as his eyes fell on Madeline a knowing look spread over his face. The playfulness vanished and a pondering look registered over his countenance. But not long did he take, when a hard smack in his cheek pulled him out of his thoughts, making him groan.
"I hope this puts some sense into you." Clare bellowed.
Jacob noticed the sudden change in his expression, "Maddie, let's head back, before you run out of your senses."
Madeline shot her eyebrows at him, "Are you serious?"
"I don't want to drag you out again."
"You never had me drag me."
"Really? I guess, I remember the last day....."
"Okay, Forget it." Madeline rolled her eyes and received a sneaker from Jacob in return.
"Clare, wanna join?" He called out.
Clare nodded, with a scrunched face, "I'd love to."
As Clare turned to leave;
"You did not even finish your drink, beautiful."
"Shove it in yours, you scoundrel."
The next day,
Madeline entered the desk of the shop, she worked in, just as any other day. As she placed her bag on the floor and turned her heel to settle the stacks;
" Excuse me"
She turned her heel to find a girl in similar uniform, meekly standing at the either side of the desk. It was clear that she worked here. A new staff to be more exact.
"Yes?" Madeline replied in a note of uncertainty.
"Can you um..tell me where can I find the cafeteria?" She asked hesitantly.
Arching an eyebrow, "Cafeteria?"
"If you don't mind.."
"Oh! Not at all. Head left..."
"...umm...Can you like show me?" fidgeting her fingers.
Madeline studying through her, "You are new in here?"
"Yeah. This is my first day. I was late and did not get to have breakfast. So just thought about grabbing something from the cafeteria."
"No problem!"
Madeline led the way and she trailed.
"Hey, you know about the Flight Club, down a few blocks?" She questioned while walking their way towards the cafeteria.
"Yeah, it is good." Madeline shrugged.
"You have been there?"
"Erm. Yeah I did."
"WOW! I heard that place is awesome. I am dying to go there. I am new in this city and going around finding all the fun places."
Madeline letting out a short laughter, "Trust me, you will like it in there."
"Will you join me?"
"Me?"
"Umm.. I don't have anyone to accompany me... So...."
"I kind of wanted to stay back at home tonight, how about we plan it for some other day?"
"Oh!" She replied and the twinkle in her eyes disappeared.
Madeline studied through her eyes, and twitched her lips, "Mary?.....You know what? Let's make it tomorrow."
Mary's face lightened up instantly. She stopped and turned towards Madeline, "You serious?"
"Uhm!" She passed a smile and gestured the girl to start walking.
Mary nodded. As, Madeline moved forward, she slowed her pace. Keeping a cautious stare fixated on the route, she took out her phone and typed "Thank me. Your prey is on her way, tonight."
It was nine in the evening, when the girls walked inside the similar ambience of the flight club. While Mary body seemed to bob instantly as the disco lights hit her skin, Madeline in contrast stayed uneffected. She tip toed inside the club scanning through the walls and the dance floor.
Both walked in and Madeline headed straight, keeping herself out of the crowd, towards the bar. Mary walked towards her, and managed to place her voice within the music, " Wanna get a drink?"
Madeline replied in a louder voice, "I'm Fine, Thank you."
Mary scrunched her face and shrugged, "Why?"
Madeline turned her neck towards her and let out a smile, "Not in support of the mood."
"You wish."
Mary smiled at her and blended into the crowd and Madeline turned towards the bar and ordered herself a glass of water.
Mary, grooved her way inside the center of the crowd and scanned through the boozing crowd till her eyes fell on a man. She walked past him handing him a piece of paper.
Using one of her hands she dragged his neck and whispered in his ears, " Easy as that."
The man's eyes fell on the bar and her lips curved up into a foxy smile.
" We meet again"
Madeline turned her neck towards the source of the voice and her eyes met with the same guy from the day before, standing beside her, leaned over the counter.
"YOU!", She exclaimed.
"You knew, you will find me here, no?" He replied in a cocky tone.
Madeline rolled her eyes and took a few steps away.
"Or sometimes you need to trust in something called co incidence." He continued, "Oh my God, I am great!"
Madeline stayed stoic.
"You are interesting. You were sipping on a neat scotch the other day." Shifting his gaze towards her, "And you are dry today?....... Let's get a drink."
Madeline's jaw clenched, "I would suggest, you stop struggling."
"Let me at least buy you a drink. I am not that bad at the end."
"No, thank you"
He pulled out his card and turned towards the counter, "A scotch for the lady."
Madeline shot a glare towards him but soon concealed it. She turned her heel towards the counter, "Get me the finest you have."
She finished her sentence and placed a black Chanel purse over the bar and used it to shove off his card that was placed over the counter. The guy looked at the purse and an annoyance started to get reflected off his face.
Madeline glanced at him from the corner of her eyes and pointed towards the bartender, "Did I mention? Cut it from mine. You need not bother the "friendly" "pretty" boy standing beside me."
"What was that?" He snapped
"Cut the crap. Get the message. Get your ass outta here." Madeline looked up at the bartender to see him shuffling a confused gaze through both of them.
"You wanted the costliest drink." she turned towards the man to see a sly smirk on his lips, " I can get you costliest drink, if you want."
"I have already said a no."
"Come on, honey"
"Don't "honey" me."her replied bluntly.
He let out a exhale and started, "Listen, pull down the "playing it hard" act. I know girls like you."
"You do? If that's true, then congratulations. But, I don't remember asking for a character verdict?"
"What do you think of yourself?" He hissed.
Madeline witnessed the transition of his countenance but she chose to stay calm, "I am not really big of a thinker." She replied with a smirk.
"Cut the crap!"
His tone was getting harsher with every further word and his eyes were getting demonous after every counter reply from Madeline, "Trying further would fatal, pretty boy."
"Oh you won't even want to know what I call as fatal."
Even though his words sounded no where near a bluff, she knew reacting would be priced. She arched her eyebrows, "We'll see about it."
Keeping his eyes fixated on her, the man reached out for a white handkerchief from his pocket. Madeline noticed it and grabbed her purse in a tight grip almost piercing her nails through the fiber.
"You won't comply, right?" he warned
"You would never ask for, what's next."
Keeping her eyes locked on the movements of the man, she unlocked her purse and reached out for a tiny knife inside his purse.
Piercing his blazing eyes through her,"You are testing my patience."
"You heard the lady!"
