Chapter 15 - Vulnerable
At Hawk's Surveillance room;
Rose entered the room in baby steps, vigorously rubbing her eyes. David saw her and chuckled, "Miss Techie, good morning."
She peered at him with a frown, "Good Joke! It is almost evening."
David shook his head and let out a humorous chuckle. Rolling her eyes he turned towards one of the guys on the computer and purred, "Hey bub, what's the situation out there?"
The boy turned towards her with a serious face, "I.. I don't know. Just..."
"What happened?"
The boy turned his neck towards the screen and waved his hand in the air. Rose read through his seriousness and rushed towards the screen.
After a brief moment of scrutiny, she ironed out her expression and her eyes balled out.
"What's wrong?" David asked from behind her.
Without a reply, she pulled out her phone, "Jereff, can you come up here? There is something, you need to know."
After three minutes,
Jereff darted inside the surveillance room,
"What is it?"
He walked up towards Rose and peered at the screen.
"The shipment," she started in a meek voice, "which was about to reach yesterday.."
"Wait!" he pulled up his forefinger and turned towards Rose, "What do you mean by 'about to reach'? Rose, the ship is already running late. And this is the first time, we are deviating off the chart."
"Exactly. The shipment did not reach the destination, and..we are unable to trace it even."
"The Hell!" When did it happen?" he turned towards the screen and leaned over it."
"It's been an hour." the boy on the controls responded.
"And, you did not even bother informing me?" Rose shouted.
"Wait!" Jereff stopped her, "This is not the time.
Rose hung her head low, "I believe something is wrong. It can't just vanish in thin air."
Jereff closed his eyes and thought for a while, before he spoke, "Jackson should know about this."
"Boss?" she argued in a worried voice, "I am sorry but...
"He is good, Rose." he cut her off, "At this point we should focus on fixing the things which can be fixed."
Rose huffed shallow and nodded to herself.
"Jereff!"
David's panicked voice echoed through the hall. Jereff and Rose rushed towards him.
David placed a shaky finger on a certain point on the screen, "The Ship!" the terror in his voice was clear, "It exploded!"
"F*ck!" Jereff hissed and darted across the room. "One of our ships been blown down, other is out of the track. What the hell is going on?"he roared.
"WHAT'S WRONG IN HERE?"
All looks up at the door, to find Jackson standing at the door clearly questioning the sudden excitement inside the surveillance room.
"Jack!" letting out a shaky exhale, "The shipments. Someone is messing that up."
Jackson furrowed towards Jereff, "What do you mean?"
Jereff pondered for a while and looked up at Jackson, "To the office!"
Jackson glanced at Rose and David and thumped out of the surveillance room and Jereff trailed.
Jackson flounced towards the door and thundered, "What is going on, Jeff? How did anyone even track our shipments?"
"Somehow, the information got leaked. We first need to find out who is behind this."
"I swear to god..." he hissed
"Calm down! This is not the time."
Jackson let out a shaky breath, thumped across the room and slumped over the chair
"There is one thing, that is revolving in my mind. We kept all the shipments a secret within us."
Jackson closes his eyes and takes a deep breath and speaks in a grumbling voice, "You mean someone from within has leaked the information?"
Jereff nodded looking at Jackson.
"Who would do that? Why would they do that?"
"I don't know."
Jackson leaned forward, "Do you know? You are suspecting your own men?"
Jereff sat on the chair, across the table, "Nothing is impossible."
Jackson took some time and mused, "Jeff, we cannot go out charging our men. They have been with us since the beginning."
"I know what that means. But, no one could have a track to this, unless an inside source is involved."
"I am not denying your fact but also we can't charge them directly" he closed his eyes and pinched the brigde of his nose. "We can't let them know about this either."
Jereff peered at the sudden change of his tone and moved his head in denial, "I don't understand."
"We have to come up with a trap" looking up at Jereff, "Disable the jamming devices for a day, and set a mock delivery for tomorrow"
"Are you sick?" he rebuked, "In case, you are not aware, Hawks has been vulnerable to cops after you chose to uncover yourself before your assassin girlfriend..."
"She is not my girlfriend."
"She was. But, now she knows about us and she is alive."
"And?"
"And?" he scoffed, "after this, do you know how stupid your idea sounds?"
"Jeff, trust me! It is tricky, I know. But,...I have something in my mind."
Jereff huffed and slumped over the chair. An annoyance clearly reflecting off his eyes. Even though, Jackson noticed his denial, he did not bother further, "Tomorrow at 1 am we are delivering the shipment, again. And this time the Hawks will be present there to scrutinize upon the activities. No one should miss out bullet proof vests. Fair enough"
"Jack, you are taking a huge, stupid risk."
Jackson stood up in his place, "For the Hawks? I am. But, I wont let any harm to my men. Trust me on this. I know, what I am doing." leaning over Jereff, "We will be like ghosts to them. Ghosts! They are invincible."
It was late that night, Nick tip toed out the hideout. Although, his footsteps were silent and cautious, but the intensity of his heartbeat was clear to his ears. He kept scrutinizing for possible threats in his surroundings as he made his way outside the place.
After ensuring that he is out of security area, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number. After a few rings, the call from the other side got accepted.
"Tomorrow, 1 am at the docks." Nick informed in a low whispering tone, keeping his eyes moving through the perimeter.
"He just informed.....Noted!"
The Police Department;
Madeline sat on the chair, across Mr. Alvarez giant table, figdeting with her pen, lost in her thoughts. It has never happened before when Mr. Alvarez summoned her in a short span, without a proper explanation.
As, the pen fell off her grip, she broke out of her thoughts. Scanning through her surroundings and looked at Jacob, who was sitting beside her, holding the similar confusion in his face.
"Jake, why am I here for?"
Jacob glanced at Madeline and adjusted over his seat, "We can know about the reason only when he arrives."
"Give me a hint, at least."
"I know nothing. He called me early this morning and asked me come over with you. He refused to convey anything over the phone."
The sun rays were hitting the huge table, of Mr. Alvarez's office, early in the morning, when Madeline and Jacob kept seated on the chairs placed on the either side of the table, anticipating Mr. Alvarez, for the past fifteen minutes. Madeline kept her eyes fixated on the buildings standing at far and near, that were hardly visible through the glass pane, shielded with mist.
"He never keeps secret." she mused, "Do you think something bad has happened?"
Jacob snapped towards Madeline and read through her worry, "I hope not."
"Good Morning!" Mr. Alvarez chirpy voice along with the loud swinging of the door, dragged their attention towards the door. They stood up in no time. In contrast to their assumptions, he was chirpy. Rather, he seemed more happy than usual. Madeline and Jacob shared a confsused glance and waited for him to talk.
Mr. Alvarez walked across the table; took his seat and adjusted his coat before gesturing them to settle back down. They complied.
Clearing his throat, the head leaned forward and smiled at Madeline, leaving her baffled in her place. "First of all, Madeline. Often the best gift arrives in the nastiest packet." he started and Jacob peered at him. Mr. Alvarez scrunitnized both their shifting expressions and held his hands up in defense, "Don't get me wrong. I am genuinely sorry for what happened to Madeline. But, looking at the bright side, her cooperation in getting us a sketch of Claros did wonders."
"Hold on!" Jacob straightened up, "What exactly did i miss in a span of just the night?"
Mr. Alvarez let out a chuckle, "We found a jackpot. A treasure glowing in the darkness of the midnight. " straightening his back, he continued, "I refused to say anything over the phone because these are sensitive issues."
"What is it?"
Mr. Alvarez grinned and dialed a number, "Bring in the reports."
After three minutes, Clare walked inside the office, with a hard disk, and handed it over to Mr. Alvarez. He connected it through the laptop and switched on the projector. A cctv footage started to play. After playing it in fast forward mode, the boss froze the screen and zoomed over a certain figure. The more smoother the pixels turned, the more clear was the face turning. The screen was now dominated by Jackson Claros' face.
Madeline swallowed in hard as his face focused in front of her.
Mr. Alvarez carefully placed the remote control over the table and turned towards Jacob, "this is why, I called you. We are successful in tracking down Jackson Claros. Although we are still into tracking their hideouts, but their activities are being quite visible, for a couple of hours."
"You mean?" Jacob questioned back, keeping his eyes locked on the screen.
"They run a high profile smuggling, and generally prefer to keep things hidden in a manner that none of their activities, could be traced. They uses signal jammer for the same. But, it seems they have a loosened up a bit. And, it has been in notice that they are getting ready for.....probably another smuggling. I assume we can get closer to the Hawks at the docks, tomorrow. Secret intels suggest, they are having some kind of business due tomorrow. Even if not the boss we can get his men at least.
Madeline let out a sigh before speaking, "Why would they loosen themselves? After so many years of a hush-hush business, things suddenly get visible. Why?"
"I don't know. Maybe, this shipment is not that significant, or maybe Claros is crazy." Mr. Alvarez replied nonchalantly.
Their look told the boss that they are still skeptical. He thought for a while and continued, "Possibilities are abundant, but, this gave us a golden opportunity. And, I want both of you, to grab this. This is the first mission, Madeline, I am letting you work with my team. Take some time. We will be designing the operation in a couple of hours. At any cost, I need Jackson Claros, before me, ALIVE!"
