If Only
Dr. Harvey sat at his desk rubbing his temples as he surveyed over the nearly completed reports of the three children that died this week. The entrance flap of the tent rustled, signaling the entrance of the only other person allowed in the tent. "Hello Martha." He greeted halfheartedly, turning his head slightly towards her. "What's the matter Dr. Harvey? Is it the children that passed?" She questioned. Walking up behind him, she put her hands on his shoulders in an effort to comfort him when he nodded. Dr. Harvey lifted his head from his hands and turned his head to look up at her before giving a defeated sigh. "It, it's just that I can't believe that their parents we just abandoned them in the middle of a hurricane like that. It's abominable, I'm disgusted by their actions." Clenching his fists in his lap, he continued, "Are they so depraved of any ounce humanity they would do such a thing as that?!" He was visibly trembling now, his face contorted into a scowl. Martha gave his shoulders a gentle squeeze before answering, "some people just don't care about anyone except themselves and their own survival."
It was silent for a moment, yet it felt as if hours had passed. "Have you ever had children Dr. Harvey?" He opened his mouth to speak but the words seem to get stuck in his throat. He hoped Martha hadn't seen him, has he feared it would raise suspicion about his personal life. Unfortunately, it has not gone unnoticed by Martha. "Dr. Harvey?" She inquired further. This seemed to break him from his thoughts. "N-no, I never did have any kids. My wife and I were going to try for one but the hurricane postponed those plans." He sighed. Martha, however, wasn't so easily convinced. She was about to press further to see if he tripped up on his words again, a telltale sign of lying; ironically, those plans were also ruins buy a hurricane and doctors and nurses she saw running toward Dr. Harvey's tent. Without taking her eyes off the approaching group, she turned her head towards him and spoke, "Looks like we're going to have visitors." Dr. Harvey nodded, before giving and irritated "It seems so." in reply. Secretly he was happy put interruption, as it took Martha's attention away from him.
