Two of Us
About a week later...
"Aw, Cotton Puff!" George said in a baby voice, hugging the fluffy little ball of white fur.
"George," Pattie tried to begin.
"Gimme a second."
"George, you-
"I'll get to you in a minute."
"George, you spend more time with the gift I gave you than you do with me! Don't you care anymore?"
"Um, what was the question?"
"See? This is what I mean! When you're with that cat, I barely exist in your mind!" Pattie was almost in tears. "You don't care! I might as well be a shadow at midnight!"
"Pattie, I-"
"Don't 'Pattie' me! Unless things change, this relationship is through, George Harrison! THROUGH!!!"
"No! I- Pattie," George set Cotton Puff down and let her run off into the other room. He slung his arm over his upset girlfriend, but she pushed it off. "I'll take you on a date. Without Cotton Puff."
"So far, so good." She sniffled.
"A picnic."
"Keep talking,"
"By the lake. Just you and me, the two of us. No press, no Cotton Puff, no one. I promise."
"Well, okay. But only if you promise-"
"I promise. Nobody for miles, just you and me, under a tree, and I'll bring all your favorite foods."
"I think I'd like that arm around me again." She giggled.
"How 'bout two?"
"Why two?"
"The better to hug you with, my dear." George said in a jokingly gruff voice, holding Pattie tight as she giggled more.
"George?"
"Hm?"
"Never let go."
"Never."
