Chapter 6: A Little More Than Expected
I looked at myself in Abby's mirror, making different facial expressions. I was wearing a dark blue blouse, black leggings, and black boots Abby let me borrow. Actually, I borrowed the leggings too.
"Please let me do your hair!" Abby begged. She was good with hair, but I had to be out the door by 7:00 and it was 6:57.
"I'm gonna be late, Abby."
"I'll do something simple. I promise."
"Fine." After two minutes, Abby finished with my hair. That was a serious record. She made a loose french braid and put small artificial flowers in the braid. It was beautiful. She was definitely doing my hair for my wedding day.
"It's beautiful!" I exclaimed.
"No problem." Her phone dinged a special ding. She looked at it and smiled, then soon started to text back when I heard the doorbell ring. I looked back at my reflection and sighed.
When I opened the door, Blake was looking at the ground until he smiled and looked up.
"Rivers! You look stunning, darling!" He squealed with a high pitch French accent. I shook my head down.
"You're crazy."
Blake chucked as he rapped his arm around me. "We're not going to the movies," he laughed.
^^^
"And we're here." Blake slammed on the breaks, jerking us in the car.
"Why are we at school?"
"To see what you can do."
I groaned. He'd tricked me into messing up the school. He was not going down without a fight.
"C'mon." He said as he pulled me out of the car.
"If we get in trouble, it's your fault." I taunted.
"We?" He asked sarcastically.
"Shut up. How are you going to get into the school?"
"I have a key." He enthused, throwing the key in the air and catching it, then looked at me with a sly smile. I shook my head down, smiling.
"Aren't the cameras going to see us?" I asked.
"You believe that crap? They don't work."
"How you know?"
"Just trust me."
The key worked and we were in. It was so weird not having anyone at school. The hallways were pitch black, but if we turned the lights on, someone might have noticed.
Blake caused a gigantic racket. I still didn't know how he'd never been caught. He knocked over a trash can, ran into the lockers, and fell over a chair. I think he did it on purpose to put me on edge, which worked.
"Not Ms. Hildy!" I whined as he stopped at her classroom door. He smiled.
"She gave me a C on my project, Liz. She deserves it." Blake sighed. "Here!" He yelled, tossing me a can. I shook my head as I looked at it.
"This is all you, soldier," I confirmed in my best manly voice, slamming the can on a table.
"I thought we were both doing this together," Blake taunted, taking the cap off his can.
He sprayed silly string on her desk and the whiteboard while I told him to stop. But he was as stubborn as a brick wall.
"Your turn." He shined a smile. I bit my lip, wanting to shake him out of his rebelliousness. But he just stood there with his signature crooked smile. I rolled my eyes, knowing I couldn't get out of this mess. I sprayed the string onto the windows, sink, and cabinets.
"I knew you had it in you, Rivers. Now, I'm starving. I know the perfect place for dinner," Blake said, his warm arm around my small waist.
^^^
"Karaoke?!" I questioned. Blake had parked in the parking lot of Karaoke Junction, a run down restaurant and bar. I hope he didn't want me to sing, because I couldn't.
"Yes. And we're singing," Blake said. I sighed.
"Blake, you don't want to hear me sing. It's the reason I never joined choir. I suck."
"I don't care, Liz. We're singing. And I have the perfect song in mind." He urged. I soon gave in. He was my ride. I don't feel like getting stranded at a karaoke restaurant.
^^^
"I'll just have a burger and fries." I said to the waitress. Blake had gotten chicken wings as we waited for some of the other people to be done with singing. i still didn't know what song we were going to sing.
"Blakie! You're up with your lady-friend," Mike the mike guy said. I didn't know if his real name is Mike or not. He said he's a struggling comedian. The only thing that was funny was him trying to be funny.
"Lady-friend?" Blake said, me taking his held out hand. We walked up to the stage and Mike the mike guy gave each of us a microphone. Blake whispered the song into his ear, but I couldn't hear what he said.
"Does she know?" Mike asked, smiling. I was getting concerned. Blake shook his head. Without another word, Mike typed a few things into his laptop. When the song started to start, I immediately knew why they were smiling.
"Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on," Blake started singing with a chuckle. "You got the healing that I want, Just like they say it in the song, Until the dawn let's Marvin Gaye and get it on."
I soon sat on the chair that was on the stage and listened like I was not going to preform. Out of all the songs, he picked this love song.
"We got this kingsize to ourselves, Don't have to share with no one else, Don't keep your secrets to yourself, It's kama sutra show and tell," he started singing to me like a singer singing to a fan.
"Woah, There's loving in your eyes that pulls me closer." He urged me to start singing because the girl part was coming up next. I, just felt something jerk inside me and I got up from the chair and put the microphone to my mouth, waiting for the right time. Blake started to smile.
"It's so subtle, I'm in trouble, But I'd rather be in trouble with you," he sang as he rested his arm around my shoulder. It was our cue.
"Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on!" We yelled like we were drunk. Some people wooed. I started to laugh.
"You got the healing that I want, Just like they say it in the song, Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on, You got to give to all to me, I'm screaming mercy, mercy please, Just like they say it in the song, Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on," we sang to each other.
When I saw his bright green eyes shine in the dim light, I had lost myself. Blake was gorgeous and amazing. That night I'd realized it, singing Marvin Gaye on a small stage with people watching. It was a beautiful moment. As we kept singing, we got closer and sillier. It was awesome.
We bowed as people clapped, and we couldn't stop laughing. We had to take to food with us because we would have choked on it.
"You were awesome!" Blake yelled when we finally got outside.
"I didn't know I had that in me." I smiled. I guess he could have seen that I was cold because he had taken off his brown leather jacket and put it on my shoulders and gave me a quick hug.
"Hey, and I didn't know you could sing!" I punched him slightly in the arm. He started to blush.
"You know me, I'm full of surprises."
^^^
"Well, we're here," Blake stated as he parked his car outside Abby's house. After all dates, We stay at each others' houses to talk about it. I couldn't wait to share what had happened, but I also didn't want to leave Blake's car.
"Earth to Liz!" Blake yelled, startling me. I had been thinking about our night.
"What'd you say?"
"Nick, Andrew and I are gonna be at Xavier's house tomorrow. Bring Abby. Okay?"
"Yea, sure. See ya!"
As Blake pulled out of the driveway, I'd noticed he didn't ask for his jacket back. I tried to get his attention but he just smiled.
