Thirty Six: Healing Waters

Dear Prince Jaehyun,

You might be wondering why I'm writing this letter to you. Honestly, I don't know how to start saying the things that I want to say. Maybe I should start by saying thank you. Thank you for the wonderful things you've done for me, my mum and sister. It means a lot knowing that you have been taking good care of mum while she's working at the Palace.

Also, thank you for the times you came by to visit me at the hospital... which reminds me, I'm already out and about. I feel better than usual and it's safe to say that I can come and volunteer at your charity events again if ever you organize more in the future.

Alright, Your Highness, here it goes... the main reason why I'm writing to you now is because I want to tell you how much I admire you. I don't think I have seen anyone who is as kind, gentle, generous and just overall good person as you. And I don't want to lose the chance to not be able to say that to you because you deserve the praise and compliment. Also, I might not be able to tell you this if I don't do it now so I decided to just jump into it.

If for some reason you don't receive this letter, I would be really bummed out. But if you do, I would really like it if you just pretend that you didn't read it. Because it took a lot of courage for me to write this to you and I'm already embarrassed just writing this now.

I think I should end this already, before I end up embarrassing myself more. I hope you're having a good day and I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Your biggest fan,

Patricia Collins

The second prince looks out the window, holding the letter in his hands. He must've read it so many times now that he can almost memorize every bit of it. The fluttering feeling he has continues to linger in his gut and he knows that it won't go away anytime soon. He can't believe Patricia wrote that letter to him.

He has received tons of letters before from different people, mostly girls who expressed their love for him. But this is the first time he has actually felt something stirring inside him that he can't explain. That's when he realized how much he cares about this particular girl.

He always sees her in every charity event that he has organized so her face already looks very familiar to him. He wasn't really paying attention much before, but when that incident in the zoo happened, he grew more curious about her. And now that he received this letter, his interest becomes even stronger than ever.

Jaehyun calls Antoine to his room and asks about his schedule for the next few weeks. There is no charity event happening anytime soon. He needs to organize one fast if he wants to see her.

His option is the first one coming up, which is his voluntary donation of blood for the Red Cross. But Antoine tells him that the volunteers for that event have all been filled. He heaves a sigh, folding the letter in his hands. "I'm sure the event will need an extra pair of hands, no?" He tries to convince Antoine again, who doesn't speak at once.

Before his executive butler/secretary can speak again, there is a knock on the door. "Come in!" Jaehyun says, as the door opens, revealing his brothers.

"Are you busy again?" Johnny asks him, then turns to Antoine. "Please let my brother have fun, Antoine."

Antoine just shakes his head, already used to the eldest prince's banter. "I'll leave now, Your Highness."

Jaehyun stops him. "About the event, Antoine..."

His butler nods. "I'll see what I can do."

He finally smiles. "Thank you."

"What was that all about?" Johnny asks him with arched brows.

Jeno looks at Jaehyun suspiciously. "Is this what I think it is?" The other just presses his lips together, resisting a smile.

Johnny eyes the both of them, knowing that something is up. "If someone doesn't start filling me in, I'm going to the King and-"

"Alright!" Jaehyun cuts his brother off. "It's about Patricia. I asked Antoine if he can let her come to the upcoming event."

Johnny stops, realizing something. "But that's the Red Cross one on Saturday. We'll be sitting for half a day while our blood gets extracted." Jaehyun nods, not getting what his brother is trying to say. "You won't be able to talk to her even if she'll be there."

"Oh, that's right," Jeno agrees.

"I know," Jaehyun answers. "But that's better than waiting for another month."

"What if we organize another event which will involve a trip?" Johnny suggests, smiling, knowing he just thought of a great idea.

Jaehyun pauses in question. "And how would that be?"

When Saturday comes, Jaehyun gets up earlier than usual. He usually doesn't get any jitters when it comes to donating blood, but today, he's feeling exceptionally anxious. It's the first time he'll be seeing Patricia again after a long while. He doesn't know if he can pretend he didn't read her letter when he sees her.

After half an hour, they finally reached the facility. Jaehyun steps out of the car, together with Johnny and Jeno. It is a private event so there's only a few people from the media. He sees Antoine behind them, who looks back at him, shaking his head. Suddenly, he wonders why his butler did that. And there's only one thing that comes to his mind. Antoine wasn't able to get her in the list.

Sighing, Jaehyun and his brothers greet everyone in the building, as they enter the room of the other participants donating blood. There, they see the volunteers for the event assisting the medical staff. He quickly scans the room to see any sign of her, but he doesn't see her.

He tries to dismiss his disappointment and proceeds to another private room, where he and his brothers would be staying to get their blood extracted. "She's not here?" Johnny asks next to him, as soon as they have settled into their seats.

Jaehyun shakes his head. "We really need to plan another event."

Johnny lets out a soft chuckle. "Not to worry. I'm on it."

He just nods, as he rests on his chair, while he feels the blood rushing out of his veins. It has been a tiring week for him. He had to study for their exams at Eton, attend to different events, parties, meetings, as well as do their homework from their royal professor who comes twice a week to teach them all sorts of things, mainly relating to the governance of the Palace.

He doesn't know how long it has been since he got there, but when he hears a voice speaking to him, he realizes that he must be dreaming. "Your Highness?"

He really must be dreaming because the voice sounds awfully familiar to him. He just can't point it out exactly. "I don't want to disturb his nap. I can just come back later."

"Alright, Patricia. I'll just call you later," another woman speaks.

His eyes quickly shoot up, realizing this. "Patricia?" He blinks, looking for her around the room.

"Y-Your Highness..." She speaks from the corner of the room.

When he finally sees her, his lips curve into a smile. "You're here."

"We're not supposed to be here, Your Highness," she tells him, as she fidgets her hands, not touching the food on the table.

Jaehyun invites her to stay inside the room after donating blood. His brothers kindly left them and told the guards to stay outside. "It won't take long," he told them a few minutes earlier.

So, he's left alone with the girl whom he's been wanting to see for a while. And now that he's finally facing her, the words he's been forming in his head suddenly disappeared.

"Your Highness, I really don't think I should be here," she speaks again.

"I reckon I might have told you not to call me that anymore, didn't I?" He says, trying to relieve the tension building up between them.

"Sorry, Your-" she stops, correcting herself. "Jaehyun. It's just that, anyone who hears me calling you by your first name might think I'm disrespecting you."

"Not when I told you to," he says matter-of-factly.

She pauses, looking at him. "Well... that's true, but-"

Before she can continue, he stops her. "I just really want to say that I got your letter and I want to thank you for that."

She quickly looks away, avoiding his gaze. She can feel her face flushing at that instant, seeing him stare into her soul. "I wrote in the letter that if you read it, you-"

"That I should pretend I haven't read it?" He sighs, before speaking again. "I understand that it took you a lot of courage to write that, Patricia. But don't you want to know my response?" He asks her directly. He just really wants to be upfront to her right now because he might not get more chances in the future, especially if his father finds out.

"I just really want to express my gratitude to you, Jaehyun. I'm not really expecting anything," she answers him.

He nods. "Just your gratitude? But I remember reading the main reason why you wrote that letter."

"That's..." She swallows hard, closing her eyes for a moment and taking a breath. "I'm sure you've heard that a million times already."

"I did. But not from someone that I like," he blurts out, not cutting his gaze from her. He watches her eyes squint a bit, her lips move, as if wanting to speak, but the words don't come out.

And so he takes a deep breath, finally wanting to speak his mind and heart. "Patricia... I-"

He gets cut off, when someone comes knocking on the door, revealing Antoine. He tries to hold his disappointment in, as his butler comes over to their table. As soon as Antoine tells him that his father called and asked for them to come back at the Palace in that instant, his heart drops because it can only mean one thing. It might be more difficult for him to see Patricia now more than ever.
