Thirty Seven: The Fall

Did he really say that? Someone he likes? No, maybe I just misheard it. There's no way that's me!

Traze can't help but think about that day, when she met Jaehyun at Red Cross. She remembered she didn't sign up for that event as volunteer but she suddenly got a call saying that they need additional volunteers so she didn't hesitate to say yes.

Later did she know that she'd talk to Jaehyun face to face about her letter. She wasn't prepared at all. She was hoping that she wouldn't have to deal with an awkward meeting with him anytime soon, but she did.

Shaking her head, she focuses her eyes on the view outside the window, hoping to get rid of any thoughts of the prince. She's on her way to Eton to visit Chelsie. It has been a few days since she moved out of their flat and she just wants to check if she's doing alright.

When she reaches the grounds of Eton, she takes a breath, looking at the buildings towering her. It's always overwhelming to see Eton. She can't imagine herself being there as a student. Thinking about it, she probably won't fit in with the royals and elites.

As she walks past the field, she sees a familiar spot which she remembers to be the place where she saw Taeyong the first time she went to Eton. She suddenly wonders if he's there. She has to admit, she misses bickering with him.

Marching her way to the familiar tree, she doesn't see any sign of him. She thought maybe he's just out of the school grounds. She decides to continue walking until she reaches a building which she realizes is the gymnasium.

She remembers Chelsie's instructions that their residential halls are behind the gymnasium and next to a park so she must be on the right track. There's only few students roaming around, since it's already half past five so classes are surely over.

When she finally sees a signage saying that the Halls of Residence is only a few meters away, she feels relieved. She can't really call Chelsie because her phone still sucks. Its battery might just die anyway the moment her sister answers her call so she decides to just experience getting lost inside the campus.

The moment she reaches the park, she sees a couple kissing, which she will normally ignore. But as she stares longer, she realizes that she knows the guy. His stature and sharp side profile are a giveaway. "Taeyong," she mumbles to herself, still glued on her post.

She just can't look away, even if she wills herself to. She doesn't know why she's suddenly feeling like there's something pricking her chest. When she sees him pulling away from the girl, she knows that she has to move at that instant because he might see her and she doesn't want to face him, not after witnessing that.

Her mind is still trying to process what she saw, when she suddenly catches him looking her way. She quickly drops his gaze and walks so fast that she almost trips. She can honestly hear her heartbeat at that moment.

When she sees Chelsie waving at her infront of a building, she finally slows down, catching her breath. She didn't even run, but she felt as if she just completed a marathon.

"Traze, are you alright?" Chelsie asks, as soon as she reaches her.

"Yeah. Your building..." She holds onto her sister, panting. "...is really so far from the gate."

Chelsie squints, eyeing her in suspicion. "Are you sure that's the reason? You look like you've just seen a ghost."

She stifles a laugh. "I might have."

Chelsie just shakes her head, as she leads the way up to her room. Traze just follows silently, still trying to recover from all that happened. She's hoping that Taeyong didn't recognize her. As a distraction, she busies herself admiring the inside of the halls. It's her first time to see such elegant dorm hall. But then again, she remembers it's Eton.

When they finally reach inside the room, her sister tells her all about their coursework and the clubs she's planning to join. But she can't really concentrate and the face of Taeyong with that girl keeps on popping inside her head.

Just then, Chelsie grabs something from her desk and gives it to her. This time, her attention falls to the sealed envelope on her hands. "The prince wrote me back?" She asks in disbelief.

Chelsie nods, smiling. "I feel like I'm your cupid right now."

She doesn't really know what to feel about that. Shaking her head, she asks her sister what her plans are for the weekend, as she wants to go out of town with her friends. "Your exams are over, right?"

"Yeah, but I need to do advanced reading on-"

"Chelsie, please. I want you to come," she tries to convince her.

Chelsie sighs. "Fine. Is everyone coming?"

"Yeah. They're all in," she says, as she hears a sound coming from outside the room.

"That must be Avery, my flatmate," Chelsie states.

She nods. "Is she nice to you?"

"I haven't really talked to her that much. She rarely goes out of her room."

After hanging out at her sister's dorm, Traze finally says goodbye and walks out of the building. But what she didn't expect is that someone is already waiting for her outside. Her heart races again, as soon as his eyes meet hers. There's no other way out and her only option to avoid him is to go back to her sister's room.

Before she can even turn around, she sees him already making his way towards her. The next thing she knew, he's already right infront of her. She has to think fast before he can say a thing. "Hey! Taeyong, how are you? It's been a while," she says hoping he won't notice her voice trembling.

"Traze," he starts to speak, his eyes continue to bore into hers. That's the only time when she realizes how long has it been since she last saw him. "I know that you saw what happened earlier."

She fakes a smile. "Oh, that. Yeah, I did. I actually wasn't sure it was you, though. It's all good. Nothing to be embarrassed about."

"That's not the point," he says, his voice seems to be in rage, but he keeps his calm, which is actually really surprising. "I..." he pauses, as students walk past them.

"Taeyong, look. I don't really care. I don't even know what you're trying to say right now," she says, still trying to hide the fact that she's very anxious at that moment.

He sighs, shaking his head. "Let me drive you home."

That isn't even a question. She knows that if she refuses his offer, he'll just drag her anyway, which can cause a scene so she just nods at him and follow his lead. When they reach a black car, she gets confused. "Where's your bike?"

"I don't want to cause another accident. Besides, you hate riding in my bike, right?" He opens the door for her, gesturing her to go in.

She doesn't answer him, stepping inside. She didn't know that her words actually matter to him. Not that it's a big deal, but she's just surprised that he actually remembered.

The drive is eerily quiet, that it's almost suffocating her. But she doesn't want to start a conversation with him either so she just clenches her fists and looks out the window. When she realizes that the way they're taking is on a different route, she turns to him with a questioning look. "Where are we going?"

He doesn't turn to face her. "Somewhere only we know."

She pauses, figuring out what he means by that. There's only one place she has in mind and she remembers going there with him only once. They weren't even close back then. Well, they're not really that close even now, but the circumstances just led them to whatever they are right now.

After a few minutes, they finally reach infront of the old-looking restaurant, which used to be a train station. She steps out of the car before he can even open it for her. She is right. This is the place where he brought her when she saved her from the casino incident. Thinking about it now, she realizes that Taeyong has saved her countless times and yet, she hasn't done anything for him.

"Are you buying me dinner?" She asks as he leads the way to the restaurant.

"I know you don't have money so yes, I'm buying you dinner again," he answers, walking up to the counter to order something.

She finds a table near the window and watches him. When he's done, she quickly looks away, pretending to be uninterested. "I'll buy you something next time," she says to him as he takes the seat across her.

He scowls. "I wonder when would that happen."

She presses her lips together, controlling herself from countering him. When their order finally comes up, she quietly eats the food that he ordered for her. She looks at him, realizing that he remembered ordering the exact same cream pasta and juice that she ordered before. The uneasy feeling she's been trying to suppress suddenly bothers her again.

"How have you been?" Taeyong asks, catching her attention.

"I'm alright. Still looking for a job. Can you imagine that? I've been looking for a job for months now," she answers him. "Oh I just remembered, weren't you telling me before that your friend's gym is hiring?"

He puts down his fork, looking at her sternly. "Are you really going to work? You just got out of the hospital."

She scoffs. "Why do you sound so concerned right now?"

He doesn't drop his gaze at her. "Because I am." When he realizes he's staring for too long, he looks down on his food again. "It's getting late. We should finish this now."

She furrows her brows. "Wait, we're not going to see the fireflies?"

"Your mum might get worried about you," he states.

She takes out her phone from her pocket and sends a message to her mum. "There. I told her that if I'm not home by midnight, she'll know who to find."

Taeyong arches a brow in question. "Do you really think I'll do something to you?"

She just shrugs as she finishes her pasta and drink. She gestures him to quickly finish his food so they can go to the railway already. When he's done, she gets up from her seat and jogs outside towards the tunnel. She doesn't even wait for him anymore until she reaches the train track.

The green minuscule lights immediately welcome her sight, causing her mouth to open in awe. "They're still here," she comments. "And there's more now." She looks over her shoulder and sees Taeyong already approaching. "Can I borrow your phone?"

He squints at her. "What for?"

"I want to take a photo of it." Her eyes doesn't leave the fireflies as she flaps a hand at him, gesturing him to give his phone already. When he finally hands her his phone, she quickly snaps photos of the lights. "Sorry. My phone's camera is really not that great. Can you send these to me later?"

He sighs. "Sure, whatever." She snaps her head at him and focuses the camera on him. "Hey, what are you doing?" He complains, but she moves closer to him, holds the phone over them and takes a photo of them together.

She smiles in content, handing the phone back to him. "There. So you'll remember me when I'm gone."

Taeyong pauses at her sudden remark. "How can you say that so casually?"

She doesn't answer him at once. Instead, she steps over the railing and attempts to balance herself while walking on it. "Well, we don't know what'll happen in the future. I might die earlier so that's a little souvenir for you in case you'll miss me."

He clenches his jaw, realizing what she's trying to say. "That's not a good joke, munter."

She turns to him with a smile. "Hey! You're calling me munter again. I actually miss you calling me that."

"I missed you too," he says, almost whispering.

"What's that?" She asks, turning around, but when she does, she loses her balance.

Fortunately, he's right behind her and his reflexes are quick so he grabs her by the hand, pulling her close to him. Her face hits just below his shoulders, allowing her to smell his scent and making her dizzy even more. She wants to pull away from him, but she feels his arms hugging her tight so she remains in her position without saying a thing.

"I've missed you, Traze," he finally speaks, and this time, she hears him loud and clear. She doesn't know what has gotten into him, but all she knows is that she missed seeing him as well. She suddenly feels warm inside her so she tries to free herself from his embrace, but he just holds her tighter.

"H-Hey, I get it. You missed me. You can let me go now," she says, lifting her chin up to look at him, only to realize that he's already waiting for her to do so.

Maybe he isn't in his right mind right now or maybe he is. She's just still too overwhelmed and she doesn't want to assume anything. But as soon as she realizes that he's slowly lowering his face to meet hers, she swallows the lump on her throat and watches him tilt his head and part his lips.

When his face is only a few inches away from hers, a loud ring of a phone disturbs their reverie. She blinks as Taeyong finally lets her go, takes his phone out from his pocket and answers the call. She exhales, trying to calm her heart. She can't believe what has just happened. Was he... really going to kiss me?
