Thirty Five: Autumn Leaves

"Chelsie, what brought you here? I didn't call for any meeting today," Jeno asks, as soon as he sees Chelsie walking inside the workshop. He's definitely surprised by her sudden appearance, but he's not complaining at all.

"Uh... Your Highness, about the meeting last time..." Chelsie pauses, looking down. "I'm sorry I wasn't able to come."

Jeno just nods in understanding. "That's alright, Chelsie. You don't have to apologize. I don't want to force you to come if you don't want to."

She shakes her head, looking up at him. "It's not that, Your Highness. I wanted to come, but my sister got out of the hospital that day so I wasn't able to."

So it's not because she didn't want to, Jeno thinks to himself. His lips finally curve into a smile. "I'm glad to hear that, Chelsie." His brother, Jaehyun would probably be relieved to know that as well.

"If it's not too much to ask, I would like to ask for a favour, Your Highness," Chelsie speaks again.

This makes him confused. Whatever it is, he's up for it. But what can it possibly be? "Anything. As long as I can do it," he answers her with a reassuring smile.

Chelsie finally brings out the letter she's hiding behind her and moves closer to the prince. "My sister wants to give this to Prince Jaehyun. I didn't know how else to approach him other than through you." She looks away for a moment, before continuing. "I hope you're not upset that I came to you for a favour, Your Highness."

Jeno lets out a soft chuckle. "I'm actually glad that you came to me for help, Chelsie. I'm more than happy to give this to my brother."

"Thank you, Your Highness." She finally hands him the letter. "I'll... get going now, then. Thank you again."

"Just a moment..." he calls out to her, stopping her from turning her back. When he meets her gaze, he continues to speak. "I would really like to get to know you, Chelsie. If you'd let me..."

She doesn't speak for a while. She tries to let his words sink in, before finally nodding in response. "A-Alright... Your Highness."

Jeno continues to stare at her, his smile growing wider. "I would like it if you drop the honorifics and just call me by my name."

"I'm just... not comfortable calling you by your name, Your Highness," she admits to him.

He heaves a sigh, nodding. "Fair enough. I just have to do everything I can until you'll feel comfortable with me then."

She hides a smile forming on her lips, as she excuses herself from him. But she gets anxious when Jeno trails behind her.

He gestures her to step out the door first. When they finally reach the hallway, he quickly notices two familiar people standing close to each other from a distance. "Mark, Kiera, I didn't know you're here."

"Oh no, we were just passing by," Kiera says casually, then turns to Chelsie. "Oh hi Chelsie!"

Chelsie just nods, looking at them. Meanwhile, Jeno continues to speak again. "I'm glad to see you two become close again."

Kiera smiles. "Oh we're closer than ever, Your Highness. In fact, we just rekindled our friendship."

"Wh-" Mark chokes in the air, as Kiera taps his back.

"Really? That's great, then. Maybe we can grab lunch together sometime? The four of us," Jeno suggests, looking at the two, and stopping to meet Chelsie's eyes.

He knows that Mark and Kiera used to be really close friends, but something happened so they became distant with each other. So seeing them together now confused him. But at the same time, he feels relieved because if what Kiera said is true, then he wouldn't have to deal with her anymore and he can focus on getting to know Chelsie more from now on.

When Jeno reached the Palace later that day, he quickly went to Jaehyun's room to give him the letter from Chelsie's sister. He finds his older brother sitting infront of his desk and busy reading something. "Jeno, is it time for archery yet?"

He shakes his head, placing down the letter on Jaehyun's desk. "It's for you."

Jaehyun picks it up with his brows furrowed in confusion. "Who would write me a letter? Antoine?"

He stifles a laugh. "Someone you really want to see."

Jaehyun squints at him, trying to figure it out. He inspects the letter and is about to open it, but Jeno stops him. "You might want to read it later when you're alone."

Jaehyun nods, taking a breath and looking at his brother. "Is there something else you want to say?"

He slowly nods. "Actually, there is. I'm not sure how to make a move to Chelsie."

A smile forms on Jaehyun's lips. "But you already told her you like her, right? I'd say you already know what you're doing, brother."

"Yes, but I don't want to scare her again like that. Being too straightforward doesn't seem to work on her," Jeno says, sighing.

"Then maybe you need help from someone who knows her. You can work it out from there."

He nods. There's only one person he can ask for help about Chelsie. "Thanks for the advice, brother!"

Jaehyun lifts his chin up. "Goodluck! Let me know what happens."

Before Jeno can step out of the room, he hears his brother speak again, "Wait, is this from Patricia?"

He just smiles and waves his hand at him. "You're welcome!" He then proceeds to his room, pacing back and forth and suddenly thinks of calling Mark, who is the only person who knows Chelsie better than him.

"Hey Jeno! What's up?" Mark answers from the other end of the line.

"Mark, I was just wondering..." he pauses. "What else do you know about Chelsie that I don't know?"

There is a few moments of silence, before he hears Mark speaking again. "I don't know her that much, aside from the fact that she gets shy towards strangers at first, she's also diligent and loves her mum and sister so much."

But Jeno already knows that. Sighing, his eyes catch something on the corner of his room and finds his keyboard sitting there. He suddenly remembers that Chelsie plays it as well. A thought crosses his mind. He thanks Mark after that and hangs up. Now he just has to wait for the right timing and hopes his plan works out.

As soon as lunch period came the next day, Jeno went to find Chelsie in the dining hall. His search gets interrupted when his cousin, Jaemin blocks his way. "What's the rush, Jeno?"

"Jaemin," he mumbles, his eyes still wandering around the hall. When he finally catches a glimpse of Chelsie, he taps Jaemin's shoulder. "I'll talk to you later."

But Jaemin stops him. "Wait, have you seen Elexa?"

He sighs. "He's probably with Renjun."

"I know, but where?"

"I'm not sure, Jaemin. Maybe try calling her?" He suggests, as he sees Mark sitting across Chelsie. They're eating together alone in the table, which suddenly sends a weird feeling inside him.

"She's not answering my calls," he continues to whine.

But Jeno has no time to hear Jaemin's complaints right now. Besides, he has heard this from him for quite some time. He really doesn't want to give up on Elexa, even if she already told him that she doesn't like him the way he does.

"Can you call her for me?" Jaemin pleads.

He sighs, taking out his phone from his pocket and pressing Elexa's number. After a few rings, she answers him. "Yes, Jeno?"

"Uh, hi Elexa! Just wondering..." He pauses, thinking of a way to ask her casually about her whereabouts without exposing Jaemin's intent.

Just then, Jaemin gestures to give his phone to him so he does. "Hi Elexa, it's Jaemin. Can you meet me here at the dining hall?"

Jeno lets him talk to her, while he watches Chelsie and Mark again. He panics, when the two stands up and steps out of the hall. Turning to Jaemin, he hears him continue to convince Elexa to eat lunch with him. After a while, Jaemin hands him his phone back. "Why is it too difficult to have a meal with the girl you like?" He sulks.

"I know," he agrees, finally escaping from Jaemin. Stepping out of the hall, he walks past the park. Some groups of students are sitting on the grass, while some are on the bench. But he can't see them anywhere.

He's about to turn around and go back inside the hall, when his eyes finally catch Chelsie sitting alone under a maple tree. She's busy writing something, that he's hesitant to go up to her and disturb her peace. So he just watches her, as the leaves from the tree fall on the ground. At that moment, it's as if everything is in slow motion and there's no one else there, but her.

"Jeno!" His thoughts get interrupted, when he hears his name being called.

When he spins around, he sees Mark flashing him a thin smile. "Mark, you're here."

"Yeah. I was going to my next class now," Mark tells him, then he lifts his chin, pointing towards Chelsie. "Are you just going to stand here or are you going to go up to her?"

He takes a breath. But before he goes up to her, he says, "Thanks, Mark."

Slowly, he makes his way towards her. He doesn't know why but he's suddenly anxious. He's never felt this way before so it's really bothering him. "Chelsie," he says in a low voice, as soon as she reaches her.

She looks up and blinks at him, unable to say a word.

"Can I sit here with you?" He asks in an attempt to be polite.

She nods slowly, still not saying a thing.

He looks at her and notices her eyes quivering a bit. "Sorry if you think I'm bothering you."

She shakes her head. "N-No, it's alright, Your Highness."

He nods, smiling at her. "Just... continue whatever you're doing. I'll be quiet I promise." He leans his back on the tree, his eyes voluntarily falls to the notepad she's holding. There, he sees a sketch of a dress, kind of similar to the ones he sees from their royal tailors. He didn't know that Chelsie is into fashion design. "Wow! That looks amazing." He can't help but comment.

She quickly snaps her head at him, not expecting his compliment. "T-Thank you, Your Highness. I'm sure you've seen better sketches."

He nods with a serious look on his face. "Well I prefer yours over any designer out there."

She swallows hard, cutting off his stare at her. "That's... that's an overstatement, Your Highness." She turns to him again, this time with a small smile. "But I'll take it."

His heart might have stopped beating for a few seconds upon hearing that. But he forces himself to recover quickly and says, "What else don't I know about you, Chelsie Collins?"

"What do you want to know, Your Highness?" she questions him back.

That's when he knew that he would do everything to make this girl like him back. And even if she wouldn't, he'd still try. Otherwise, he will have to suffer knowing that she might end up with the wrong guy.
