Fifty Four: A Curse So Dark and Lonely

"Jaehyun, look at these letters!" Johnny calls his attention so he quickly stands up from his seat and moves closer to his brother. He notices the box containing a handful of letters, which all came from their real father. "Yours Forever, Charles," Johnny reads. "These are all for mother. They must have been in contact through letters before."

"Where did you find this?" He questions him, studying the old, wooden box in Johnny's hands.

"I saw it hidden in one of the bookshelves in the library," Johnny answers.

He takes a letter from the box and reads it. A part of the letter is saying how their grandfather made their father choose between being a King and being with their mother. But he chose the latter. "I can't believe grandfather could do something like this," he mumbles.

"Father says if I don't choose the throne, he will try to find and kill you. I can't let that happen. I have to stay for our sake. For now, you have to live somewhere else where he can't find you. Don't worry about me. I can take care of myself. I love you and our children always."

Johnny stops reading and turns to him. "Do you think... grandfather was the one who killed our father? That he orchestrated his death?"

He pauses, thinking. He has never met his grandfather before. Neither of them did. And even so, never did it cross his mind that his grandfather could do such thing. All the while, he thought that he was a noble King and a great father. "I don't know, Johnny," he answers him, still trying to give their grandfather the benefit of the doubt.

"If grandfather did it, I'm not sure I will be able to stand infront of the whole nation, knowing that our grandfather murdered his own son," Johnny says, gritting his teeth.

He swallows hard. His brother is right. It would be the downfall of the royal family. But shedding light to what happened to their father is also what matters most. Even if it happened years ago, everyone should know what really happened. They have to do whatever it takes to give justice to their father's death.

Jaehyun has been riding Xenos, his favourite horse, for almost an hour now. He's just circling around the organic gardens at the back of the Palace. He wants to take his mind off of things after everything that he's found out so far. He and his older brother have taken the matter into their hands, hiring a private investigator to dig deeper into the case of their father.

What they know so far is that his death has been announced a day before the coronation of King Connor. It was said that he died in a plane crash after attending a summit from the United States. It may seem normal at first glance, but knowing now about the letters, he knew that something was not right about all of that.

After a while, he finally decides to hop off Xenos and walk him back to The Great Stable. He pats Xenos' face before handing him to the royal officer in charge of the stable and proceeding back to the palace. The moment he reaches the hallway, he instantly hears a familiar voice echoing in the area. "Patricia?" He thinks to himself as he hurries his pace, making a turn, which leads to another hallway.

The voices grow louder as he gets closer to one of the offices. Soon enough, he sees three familiar figures standing outside a door. One of them is Patricia, who recognizes him the moment he arrives. "Patricia, Chelsie!" He greets them with a smile, but his eyes stay on the girl who is looking back at her.

"Jaehyun, how are you?" She asks him and he can't help but feel delighted. He answers her at once and decides to take her out for a walk so he asks her sister for permission just to be polite.

When he's finally alone with her, he leads the way back to the garden. She's still silent so he wonders if he's boring her. Turning to her, she stares at the flowers on the side, admiring them. "I'm glad to see you here, Patricia," he finally speaks, catching her attention.

"Me too," she says. "Thank you for letting us see mum."

"It's in our deal, right?" He answers, remembering what he told her.

She nods at him. "So, have you seen the King yet?"

It's his turn to fall silent. Looking away, he exhales a breath, before answering her. "I don't think we've got plenty of time left to spend with him."

"I wish I can say it's alright, but I know it's not." She purses her lips and gulps down. "Don't lose hope, Jaehyun."

He turns to her and smiles. "I won't."

Just then, his phone starts to ring so he excuses himself from her to answer it. "Yes Antoine?" He almost drops his phone after hearing that the King is finally awake. He turns back to Patricia after hanging up the call and tells her about it.

"I'm glad to hear that," she says to him and that makes his heart leap a bit.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Patricia." He finally leaves her behind when one of the guards appear to escort him. He sees her wave at him before completely disappearing from his sight.

Jaehyun and his brothers quickly run towards the room of the King, as soon as they reach the hospital. No matter what, he's still their father and they care about him. He instantly feels the cold rushing in as he steps inside the room. Their mother is already there, holding his hand. They quickly bow at them before moving closer to his bed. "Father," Jeno is the first one who speaks.

"Children," the King answers in a soft voice, which is unusual for him. His face looks pale and he seems like he's aged just by staying at the hospital. He just can't imagine what he's going through in that moment. "Your mother told me everything. I'm sorry if we had to keep it a secret from you."

"You're still our father," he says, looking at him. He feels sorry that he can't do anything about the situation.

"Father, there's something we want to ask you," Johnny asks without hesitation. He turns to his older brother who gives him a nod. He doesn't know if now is the right time to be asking such thing.

"Go on, child," the King answers.

Johnny takes a breath before opening his mouth. "Is grandfather the one who killed our real father?"

The King doesn't answer at once. His eyes fall to their mother who is just silent on her seat. Then, he turns to them again. "Your grandfather did what he did. He hired someone to kill my brother."

He bats an eye, unable to believe what he's hearing. So it's true. Their grandfather was the one who planned everything. Now he's even more ashamed of where he came from. The Royal Family is supposed to set a good example to the people, but they have been keeping such secret to save themselves from disgrace.

"But you don't have to worry about any of that. He's already in jail. And your grandfather..." he pauses, coughing a bit. "He's already serving his sentence in the afterlife."
