OH, IT'S SUCH A LONG AND
AWFUL LONELY FALL, DOWN
FROM THE PEDESTAL THAT
YOU KEEP PUTTING ME ON.

YOU BELIEVE ME LIKE A GOD

In theory, the world is supposed to be balanced by good and evil. People that do the right thing and those who do the exact opposite — enough to balance each others actions out. The world is supposed to be a neutral ground for all to live on, but things never go with how they're supposed to be. People fall between the cracks, they learn how to thrive in a world different from what it's supposed to be. That's how evolution started, a need for something different was discovered and those who had the necessary parts survived to the next generation. Some people learned that they could thrive in the world of in-between. The world where good and evil were intermixed, people who did bad things with good intentions or people who did good things for all the wrong reasons. Certain places turned to being picture perfect example of what old and evil looked like when they worked so well with each other. Gotham City was one of those. A city riddled not with right and wrong, but a city riddled with wrongs lurking behind every street corner. Behind every building. Behind every person. Everyone on Gotham had a secret they were hiding, something wrong that they had done. Many came straight from necessity — there was no other option. They either survived by doing whatever they had to do or they suffered for it.

Most people did what they had to do to live another day.

Wren Leyton wasn't very aware of what the outside world of Gotham was struggling with. Instead, she stayed hidden behind the luxurious walls of her home and felt comfortable in her well-pressed school uniform for Gotham Academy, and she was okay with that. She had everything she could ever ask for and more — parents who attended to her every needs and money that poured out of her ears. Of course, these were all things that looked good to the other students at the academy. To the other children who's parents were off on business trips more often than they were at home. The children raised by nanny's that constantly cycled in and out of their lives. From everyone else's perspective, Wren Leyton had the perfect childhood. The one that people wished for at night — the one that fairytales were made of. And for a while, Wren also thought that's what she had. She never knew anything different, not until she got older (and by older she was going into the fourth grade) and figured out most children her age had never even seen a sword. Let alone learn how to kill another human being with one in under thirty seconds.

Gotham City had a lot of people that thrives in the in-between, but the Leyton family had been part of the Gotham City crime scene for generations. The whole reasoning behind why they were placed in the city in the first place was to help set up some of the crime rings. To lay the groundwork for the league — to do everything that needed to be done and not have anyone suspect a thing. And they didn't, the people of Gotham fell in love with the charismatic game of charades put on by the Leyton's. Wren Leyton was the by-product of a marriage of convenience — Talia Al Ghul's most trusted assassin (or at least one of them hand picked and trained by the daughter of the demon's head) and Ra's Al Ghul's most successful spy. Wren Leyton was everything that the league wanted, someone who could fight but also put a pretty smile on for the cameras and make the world swoon. The only thing they never expected: Wren Leyton being loved by her parents. By parents that were once deeply devoted to the cause of the league only to slowly change that devotion into their daughter.

The same daughter who befriended the quiet boy in the back of her class — the same quiet boy she realized knew almost everything there was to know about her and her family. The crime, the training, the darkness that surrounded the Leyton family. Tim Drake was many things, but Wren Leyton liked to explain that they were polar opposites of each other to anyone who asked. She typically never went into any further detail, she liked to keep people on their toes, especially as they got a bit older. But, truly, Tim Drake was quiet and calculated. He thought before he spoke, he watched everything he possibly could. Tim Drake was able to read people better than they knew themselves. Wren Leyton was good at reading people, she had to be, her mother enforced it in her at a young age. Wren Leyton, completely opposite to the boy who was by her side most of the time, was loud and head-strong. She was quick to jump into something without much thought of the "what ifs", instead she saw something that needed to happen and decided to do it.

In theory, the two should have never worked as friends. They were much too different. But in another sense, they balanced each other out in the ways they needed. Wren protected the people she loved — which, regrettably so, included her parents — and Tim was quick to know as much as he could about the things important to them. Important to keeping them safe. Somewhere tucked right between Wren Leyton and Tim Drake sat Conner Kent — a boy who had no well known place in the world, but someone who came to appreciate the things he had around him. Someone who would do anything to protect the people he loved (which was most definitely not his two best friends that were clearly into each other and not him). (Most definitely not).

It's why when Tim Drake fought his way (moreso talked his way) into being Robin, he argued to tooth and nail over Wren being told about the secret identities. Now, looking back on it, both Tim and Wren wish he hadn't fought for this. It would have saved them both so much drama — then again, Wren thinks that certain events (i.e. her parents being murdered by the league of assassins) in her life would have pulled her into this world no matter what. And when she thought about it again, the other people she met purely because of this world she was dragged straight into (namely Conner Kent). Well, okay, maybe that was another reason to be okay with all that happened to her. Or maybe she was just a girl trying to come to terms with what happened to her.

After all, Wren Leyton hasn't been the same ever since she died. How could she be?

AUTHORS NOTE

ORIGINAL NOTE CIRCA 2022:
... well well well
here we are.
can we believe it?
a fic that ISN'T augustdick?
i know, i know. it's shocking.

Anyways !!! I'm actually so fucking excited for this story you guys don't understand. I was randomly talking about this fic with Lindsay in our discord dms (we're always talking this is nothing new we have a LOT to say all of the gd time) (love you tho I love our lil talks) and it just came up. Then it all spiraled into something crazy in my notes app and I was texting Lindsay sporadically throughout (also shout out to Lindsay for one of the major ideas that lead me into another major idea for this fic ... she'll get another shout out when it comes into play).

This fic is still mostly just vibes (all of mine are tho so what's new), vibes and ideas. It more than likely won't be based off of any specific comic book run for Tim, but we'll still see the characters most important to him (Kon, Cassie, Bart, his adoptive family, etc) as well as characters that become important to Wren! Wren & Jason are going to bond so much in this (giving Jason the older brother wisdom frfr) (people who died and came back to life bc of the Lazarus pit and now have white streaks in their hair gang) (they had to specify the white streaks bc damian would have tried to join) (they couldn't let him do that). But all in all, it has a much different vibe from the plots I have in my other fics. And Wren is one of my more unique OCs or at the very least is different from my main girl August who is all I write about anymore. Also ... peep the lil AugustDick love in here (they do be married and I love them). August & Wren interaction will be occurring. August is almost as bad about picking up strays who need guidance as Bruce (canonically there are three ... Nico, Clara (in the universes they exist together), and now Wren). Key word: almost.

Another key note: Tim is not chronically seventeen in this — neither is Wren. I imagine them to be 18/19 at the start. So that puts Jason at being 20/21 and Dick & August are 27/28!

NOTE CIRCA 2025:
timwren nation we gather here today to jump and shout in joy bc YAYYYY!!! except now we get to morph this into timwrenkon nation ... I've been cooking this one up for a while (I started writing a smutshot two years ago and it led to a headcanon and then I was never able to stop thinking about timwrenkon as a poly couple but still with the trademarked nightwvngs stupidity they all have). anyways ... we are HERE and
we are jumping from pure happiness bc YUHHHHH actually doing things guys! Ashton in an active era who's surprised, I know I am!

once again, will I update in a decent manner? who knows! not me! we'll all discover that as time goes on teehee!
