Chapter 21

There is no way to describe the fear inside of you when you get a text that tells you to come home in that instant.

You always think the worst when it comes to emergencies. You think that someone died, thatsomeone's in trouble...

And when I got home and the door was locked my worry became bigger.

I knocked. Nothing. Another knock, nothing. I grabbed my phone to call my mom when the door opened. I went inside and the lights were off.

I turned on the lights and gasped when I found my mom completly fine, sitting on the couch reading the newspaper.

She stood up and smiled at me. She gave me a pink colored paper and without saying anything she left to her room.

The note read: I'm glad you got my text. Remember where we first met? I have a surprise for you!

Who sends a person who just broke their wrist on a scanvenger hunt? What if I need to climb? What if I need to use my hands?

Well I guess Shawn would be really careful and not send me anywhere where I could hurt myself, but still...

Since I could't ride a bike or had a license, I called for an Uber and headed to where I first met Shawn so many years ago.

I arrived to Little Town Elementary School and looked at the building in front of me. It had changed a lot through out the years, it was a lot bigger now.

I circled the school and found the playground, at least that was in the same place.

The playground had been renovated, everything looked as if they'd changed it just a few years before. If they were old when I was there then it made sense that they'd changed it.

But there was one thing that still hadn't changed, a tree in the middle of everything. I saw it and smiled, the memories flooded my mind.

In first grade we were asked by our teacher, Mrs Gardiner, to plant trees around the playground because it was so plain. I remember I was trying to dig a hole to put my tree in and a boy with brown hair came out of nowhere and helped me dig.

Mrs Gardiner was a little mad at first when she saw that I'd planted the tree in the middle of the playground when she specifically told us to plant them around but she calmed down when she saw that Shawn and I were together.

The first few weeks of school I'd been alone since I had just moved to The Town after living in San Francisco since I was born. Shawn became my very first friend that day and I remember Mrs Gardiner walking to another group of kids murmuring to herself "One day...I know it."

"Some nice memories coming from that tree, huh?" I turn around and find myself facing the one and only Mrs Gardiner. I gave her a big smile. "Yeah...it was because of that tree that I met my first friend here."

She walked closer to me and we both stared at the tree. "I always knew it you know? It was pretty obvious that you would end up together." I laughed  and looked up the tree, it had grown a lot. "Really? I never actually imagined it. At first I thought we'd be friends forever, then we didn't talk for years so the idea of us ending together never crossed my mind."

She sighed and took a pink piece of paper out of her back pocket. She gave me the piece of paper and said, "Here you go honey, I hope you like the sur- Oh my! What happened to your hand?" I looked down at my cast and smiled. I debated wether or not should I tell her the absolute truth.

"I was running and I fell. I put my hand for support and broke my wrist." Mrs Gardiner had a look of disgust in her face, she'd always been senstive about things like blood and broken bones.

"Well I hope you get better soon. Good luck on your little hunt." She waved goodbye and left me standing alone looking at a ten year old tree.

I read the note she'd given me out loud. Good, you remembered. I wish time would've stopped the day we crossed paths again. Maybe it's a sign that this is good.

I laughed at his clever use of words. But seriously Shawn, I'm not such an idiot that you had to underline the keywords for me.

The Starbucks near the beach wasn't far...by car. Walking, I got there in twenty minutes and the heat was horrible. But I kept in mind that I was on a mission.

I arrived safe, sound, tired and sweaty to the stop sign that I did not see when Shawn almost ran me over on November 1st. I looked around to see where the paper could be hiding but saw nothing. The answer was on the sign but my height made it difficult to see.

I looked up out of pure curiosity and saw a folded piece of paper stuck with tape to the back side of the sign. I tried reaching it but failed to grab it. I didn't fail to look like an idiot though.

"Need some help?" I turn around the where the voice was and saw Tamara standing behind me. Her look turned insistent. "Well?" I nodded and she walked to the stop sign. She got on her toes and reached the note very easily. She gave it to me and waved. Then she crossed the street to Starbucks where Vincent was waiting with the door open.

I read the note. It said: Remember our first dance? Walk slowly through town, I garantee you'll find a song you recognize.

I smiled down at the paper and remembered our first dance. We'd been friends for a long time but we had never in our history of friendship danced together, that wasn't our thing.

I walked around the center of town and looked at all the beautiful items in the stores. This was a part of town I had only visited a couple of times when I was younger and I had completly forgotten about the beauty inside of it.

The thing about the center of The Town wasn't exactly the stores or the things that they sold in them, it was the people there. They always seemed happy, as if nothing could ever take that happiness away from them.

I was looking at some bags when I heard it. It was the Despacito Remix, the song that Shawn and I had danced to at my first in-town party.

I walked to the surf store that was playing the song. I went inside and it was like heaven. Not because I like surfing but it had AC and I was dying so it was really nice going inside.

I looked through the store looking to where the next clue might be. A girl who I assumed worked at the store came and asked, "Are you looking for anything in particular?" I looked up from the bathing suites I was checking out and shook my head. "No, I'm okay. Thanks."

The girl was about to leave when she turned around. "You're Emma, right? The girl with the cute boyfriend doing the scavenger hunt?" Anger rose inside of me but I willed myself to stay calm. It's just a simple comment I told myself. And it's the truth, my boyfriend is cute. I took deep breaths and nodded. "Yup. That's me."

The girl's face quickly changed color in shame. "Oh my God! I shouldn't have said that. Sorry." I shook my head. "Don't worry, it's just the truth." She sighed. "Whew, that was close. Anyways, here's your note. You're so lucky." She handed me the pink note and I gave her a smile in response.

This last note read: the place where I told the truth, what a nice place to meet, right?

Crossberry Park.

I got in a cab and he drove me as fast as he could to the park. I quikly payed the cab driver and ran to where Shawn had told me he liked me.

I found him sitting down with rose in his hand. I silently walked behind his back and placed my hand on his eyes.

"Guess who?" He laughed. "Hmm, Ellie I told you not to meet me in public!" I playfully hit his head. "That's not funny." He laughed again and hugged me. "It's very funny." I rolled my eyes and sat next to him.

"So why make me go on a hunt all around town to find you? I was literally here like an hour ago, you just made walk in a fricking circle." He took my hand in his and I lay my head on his shoulder. It felt so natural to be like this with him, as if we were meant to be that way.

"I kind of just wanted you to get to know The Town before you left. You've been so caught up with saying goodbye to everyone and fixing other people's mistakes and problems that you forgot to say goodbye to your very own home." I closed my eyes and imagined living in a world where everything could be perfect and I wouldn't leave. But of course there isn't such a world.

"I'm leaving in a few months. Why do I have to say goodbye to The Town when I can spend time with you?" He slipped his hand from mine and started rubbing my shoulder. "You can spend everyday with me, but for today I wanted you to get to know this town. The way I see it, if this town had never existed we probably wouldn't be here having this conversation. We probably wouldn't have met. And do you know what would be of us if we hadn't met?" I smiled. "We'd be a mess."

"Exactly."

I looked down to the rose he was holding with his other hand. It was the most beautiful rose I'd ever seen.

"That's a nice rose you have there." I looked up to see him smiling. "Yeah. It's for you actually. I really hope you keep it so that it grows into something beautiful like our friendship. You are two of my favorite people in one person, my best friend and my girlfriend." He hugged me tightly and I could hear him crying a little. He started sobbing and whispered into my ear, "I don't want you to leave."

Tears started to fall down my face when I heard what he said. I tried to think of ways to comfort him, anything to make him stop crying but nothing came to mind.

We were both a crying mess and there was nothing I could do about it.

After he stopped crying I looked at him and smiled. "So I'm your best friend?" He laughed. "Is that what impressed you the most?" I kissed his cheek and embraced him in another hug.

"No but I'm just trying not to cry again because of how fricking cute you are." He pulled away from the hug and looked at me as if I were an alien. "Did you just, not cuss?" My eyes widend in surprise. "Yes! I fucking did it! Aw crap." We both laughed like maniacs and I could see the few mothers close to us pulling their children away from us. "You were so close." I breathed in loudly. So close.

Sorry for the terrible ending, I just didn't know how to end it.

We are soooooo close to 600 reads, just 4 more to go!

Also, I'm already working on my next book after this one is finished and some of you might not like it but it's very important to me so I'll post in anyways.

This was such a sappy chapter, I loved it so much😂
