The Blonde, the Brunette, and the Corn Maze (Chenzel)

N/A: I know Halloween is over just bear with me I wanted to write this. I did not get to do any of the fall stuff for the past few years like corn mazes or seeing the pumpkin cannon and canoe race.

Kristin grinned deviously as Idina pulled their car up to the parking lot for the "corn maze." It was a corn maze. The information Kristin had neglected to tell the gorgeous brunette to her left was that it was a haunted corn maze.

Idina looked the part of an unsuspecting horror movie victim in her thick plaid sweater, crew cut grey t-shirt, jeans, and knee-high boots. Dressed for the weather, unlike Kristin herself, who had opted for a think knee-length dress and a leather jacket, matching her ankle-high boots. At some protest, Kristin had opted for some tights to appease Idina.

"You'd better hope we don't get lost," Idina warned. "I'm giving you my coat for shit. It's almost freezing."

"I'll be fine," Kristin said with a smile.

She knew she had a snuggle buddy in her fiancée and they could waddle down the maze together, and warm. She took another look around, making sure there was not anything obvious to tip Idina off before they were into the thick of it.

"Are we going?" Idina asked.

She had already exited the vehicle and slammed the door to get Kristin's attention. Kristin frowned, not liking seeing Idina in a sour mood.

"Come on, that'll be fun, Dee," she said, taking her hand.

"Let's just get this over with then go home," Idina replied. "There are so many people here, Kris," she said in a whiny plea. "I don't like the crowds." She looked over to her lover with large green eyes, pleading for a night in and lots of sleep instead of being out here in the middle of nowhere. It smelt like manure.

Kristin put a grin on her face and pushed herself up close to Idina, welcoming the warmth radiating off of her body. Idina's lips turned upwards though she tried her best to hide it and she put the flaps of her jacket around Kristin's small frame.

They walked up to the ticket booth as the wind began to pick up, glad there was not a long lineup. Kristin was still debating if she should feign ignorance or not, knowing Idina would see through it, and she would be in the doghouse no matter what. Not to mention she did not trust her ability not to laugh. When Idina got mad, first her ears would turn red, and it slowly creeping inwards in a spiral until everything, including her the tip of her nose, was bright like a tomato and radiating heat. Of course, she would have to be absolutely livid for that to happen, which she would not be, but Kristin had a feeling Idina's flustered frustration would be Kristin's threshold of funny and adorable angry.

And besides, there was no going back once you were in the maze. There was a constant trickle of people entering, going against the grain was not an option.

Hand-in-hand, they entered the shadowy forest of corn as Idina talked strategies for getting out fast.

Kristin just nodded along, knowing that it was less of a maze and more of a walk through the different sections of Halloween-themed horror. She had looked out her layout on the sight. As long you kept walking forward, you would make out without difficulty. The paths were designed to break people up. A haunted house was scarier if there were not a bunch of strangers walking through it with you.

"I'm not digging the decorations," Idina said as she looked at the torn clothes soaking in a blood-like substance. It was eerily quiet too as they took a left. Idina suddenly realized there had been no upbeat music in the parking lot, and the deeper they got into the maze, the more she thought she heard classic tracks of bats and heartbeats set to atmospheric music. Was it getting colder?

The sun had seeped below the tips of the corn, creating long looming shadows against their path.

"I have a flashlight," Idina assured Kristin.

"Of course, you do," Kristin said, stopping to plant a kiss on her lip.

Idina smiled, kissing her back. There is no one around. And the sunset was pretty romantic.

"I love you," she mumbled against Kristin's plump lips.

"I love you too," her fiancée replied. She saw something move in the bush behind them but said nothing.

They continued to walk down the path.

"I think we're being followed," Idina said, continuing to look behind them. "We haven't come across another path, just turns, maybe we somehow got out of the maze?"

"Let's just keep going forward," Kristen said.

She had a feeling an actor was onto them, and from the maze paths she had memorized, they had chosen to walk around the entire maze before entering into the middle part, where the true haunted house was. They were on the "jump scare" route. Still, she held onto Idina's arm a bit tighter.

"What, you scared?"

"No," Kristin replied, not a lie.

"Sure you are," Idina replied, unconvinced.

A twig snapped behind them and Idina squeaked, her entire body tensing up. She pulled Kristin close, looking around in the dim lighting.

"Just some teenagers," the brunette decided. "Let's get out of here and get back home."

They made small talk until the sun completely set and Idina produced a flashlight from her bag. Kristin put a hand out expectantly, but Idina shook her head with a reply of "pack your own next time," and left it at that.

Periodically, Idina would mutter "just the wind" as the corn rustled behind them, a tight grip on Kristin's hand. Kristin, who had thought she would be fine, was starting to grow increasingly uneasy. It had been at least a half-hour since they had seen a turn, fork in the road, or any semblance of human life. She had loved these as a kid, but as every second ticked by, she knew something happening was getting closer and closer, and her heart was racing.

A branch sapped as Idina steppe don it, making them both jump. Breathing heavily, they both looked at each other in relief.

"This is a sucky maze, Kris," Idina informed her. "Hate to say it, but I was right."

"Fine you win," Kristen said. Nothing remotely scary except for their imaginations had happened so far. "Let's get out of here."

"Um, Kris," Idina said,

"Yeah?"

"Which way were we going?" Idina asked as she looked from left to right. It was fully dark outside now, the only light coming from Idina's flashlight. The decorations and fizzled out and there were no landmarks as to which way they should proceed.

"Um, let's go this way," Kristin said, pointing in a random direction and started walking.

Idina jogged to catch up with her. "I'm getting cold, I hope this is the right way."

"How are you cold>?" Kristin asked. "Look at me!"

"I'm cold," Idina said formally.

"Alright," Kristin said, shaking her head.

Just as they were about to go down that path, someone jumped out of the field and started running towards them, brandishing an axe.

Idina screamed in terror, grasping onto Kristin's wrist, and pulling her in the other direction as they started to run. Kristin tried to keep up, silently wondering if this was an actual madman or an actor. Her fiancée had longer legs, thus longer sides, and soon Kristin was struggling to keep up with her. They had gained ground on the unwieldier and they rounded a corner, then Idina pulled them down a path, then in between the corn.

"This isn't a path," Kristin whispered.

"Just don't leave a train," Idina said, slowing down a bit so that Kristin was no longer struggling.

She led the two of them on a brisk pace through the corn until they stumbled out onto another path. This was still dark but full of creepy dollar store decorations creating an eerie silhouette. A few people were milling around.

"I think we're safe now," Idina said, gasping for air.

"I have a confession," Kristin said.

"Yeah?"

"This is a haunted house maze."

"What? Kristin!"

"So that guy was probably an actor."

Idina did not say anything, worry Kristin. Idina was rightfully mad, but she was also quiet. When Idina got quiet, it was a new level. Mad would not quite capture what the brunette was feeling.

Idina took a deep breath, then said: "Let's just get out of here."

She walked off in a direction, without saying anything to Kristin or motioning to take her hand. Idina weaved through the narrow paths quickly, not paying any mind to Kristin who had to jog to keep up, brushing through dangling webs and moving animatronics. Kristin kept trying to apologize but was met with a shush each time, and she eventually gave up.

After some time, Kristin realized she was no longer following a few places behind her fiancée, but instead another person. She stopped, looking around.

"Idina?" she called out, her heartbeat quickening. "Idina!"

She looked around and the dark figure, partially illuminated by phone lights. None of them was her girlfriend. She felt the colour drain from her first as for the first time, she had to proceed alone. The stalks seemed taller now that she was alone, and she was suddenly aware of how short she was. And that she no longer knew where they were in the maze.

Keep walking forward and you will make it o-

She shrieked as she turned a corner and found herself face to face with a gruesome zombie animatronic.

"Brains!" something moaned and grabbed her upper arm, making her shriek again.

In faint green lighting, this path seemed to be lit in, Kristin could make out the bare outline of some fake cells in the corn, with actors inside. It is all fake, she reassured herself. This had been less scary in her mind when she was doing this with Idina.

Heart pounding in her ears, Kristin took precautions to walk down the very middle of the path, so that no one could reach out and grab her unsuspectingly.

With grit and determination, she managed to make it unscathed through the maze. The parking lot was deserted save for the staff area and their car. Had Idina made it out?

Kristin walked up to their car and sighed in relief when she saw her fiancée sleeping in the driver's seat, the back fully reclined. The blanket they kept in the trunk was pulled up under her chin.

Kristin knocked on the window, waking Idina with a start. Idina cracked the door.

"What time is it?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.

"Can you unlock the doors?"

Idina nodded and did so, starting the engine.

Kristin groaned as soon as she stepped inside. Her bones would hurt as they warmed up. She started shaking, suddenly realizing how cold she was. Idina wrapped her in the blanket, already warm from her body heat. It felt like it was burning as it brushed against Kristin's frigid skin.

"Are you okay?" she asked as she checked the clock on the car dash. "I got out over an hour ago, where did you go?'

"I don't know," she said through chattering teeth. "I guess I got lost."

"Sorry for leaving you," Idina apologized. "I didn't mean to; I just did not notice until I couldn't find you anywhere."

Kristin nodded, not mad. "That was terrifying," she muttered.

Idina hugged her. "It was." She giggled and kissed Kristin's cheek. "I thought this type of Halloween stuff never scared you, but you screamed just as loud as I did."

Kristin nodded. "The gore paths were the worst," she admitted. Not scary, just, unsettling.

"I didn't walk through those," Idina said. "I ended up down a cemetery path, then I got out."

"Not me," Kristin said. "Let's go home."

"Now you want to go home," Idina teased.

"Yes," Kristin said in defeat. "Please, take me home."

"My pleasure," Idina said, grinning. This may have been Kirstin's idea of a terrible prank, but Idina had won the evening.
