66: It Always Is Lovely As Ever
A/n: Oh god...I realized I haven't prepared my mentality to write the next chapter...
Traveling back in time to the moment Shirayuki Sae was set up for a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss matters relating to the mystery revolving around Arina Avenira at his personal office. Mr. Nagasawa had Sae elaborate on her hypothesis and found it rather convincing.
"It does make sense, and unfortunately it caused me more headache," sighed the Prime Minister, placing knuckles under his chin. "It's a disgrace to say that even I know nothing about what's going on in my country. What makes them target this place? Ever since that Arina girl came to our country things started to get stranger, especially with the Ministers of State and the parliament. I no longer have any power at all. It's rather impossible for me to convince the parliament for once. What is your hypothesis on this matter?"
"It's difficult to say much," said Sae, lifting her glasses. "But please take one more situation into consideration, sir. In my opinion the outbreak virus in America isn't a mere accident. What you said about the government enforcing those laws without your acknowledgment while claiming you did approve all of the above is a huge red flag. The question is HOW did they do it? Unless they impersonate you I can't see otherwise. And the constant besmirching of our ally haven't you thought of them sending spies over here for ONCE at least?"
"That's impossible. I haven't seen a new face for years," insisted the Prime Minister.
"What if it's a trick to deceive you?" Sae furrowed her thick eyebrows. "And let's analyze further. Betraying America, alright, that's pretty clear, and then boom! America is getting a new virus! Most importantly, if you have read the news, this virus is unspreadable within Japan's territory AND all the Orlas satellite states. On February 14th, an American spy plane was shot down by Japan, which deduced that the Orlas Union possibly got themselves involved in this conflict and purposely tried to tear down U.S.-Japan Security Treaty and have Japan turn against America. But just why -- why do they have to go to this extent?"
"I don't know either," confessed the Prime Minister. He bared through the humiliation of failing at his job whilst beginning to hang his head low. Sae smothered a sigh, massaging her temples.
"Needless to say, you should be careful with everyone around you now. And one more thing, sir, you should be more understanding toward Juria. She still doesn't want to go home because of you, you know?"
"Hmpf! That idiot daughter! If she doesn't want to go home, then let her be," said the Prime Minister, folding his arms. "Only I know what is best for her!"
Sae blatantly rolled her eyes.
"But again, that's quite convincing," he proceeded, causing Sae to sweatdrop at his cluelessness. Is he really the Prime Minister?
"If those you said were true, then my intuition about that Arina girl is correct after all! She must serve as a pawn for the Evil Empire to abuse the propaganda here! So far it has worked and I think it's time to stop them."
"Not so sure it is," said Sae.
"You have a better theory?"
"But so far it's the most convincing," she answered while rubbing her chin. "According to Juria, Arina used to warn her about these problems we're discussing right now -- right after Asano's birthday party. You do remember that party, right? On one side it's like a social gathering for political figures. She must have chatted with one back then. Maybe she was deployed here with no knowledge at first."
"And there's no active member who isn't aware of what they're doing," added the Prime Minister, widening his eyes in realization, "except for pawns."
"Exactly. But I'm not sure if what you deduced is the only thing."
The door to the office suddenly slammed open. The Defense Minister and Foreign Minister barged in. "You two again!?" yelled the Prime Minister. They ignored him and began reporting:
"Sir, the US is planning an attack on us!"
"Why!?"
"Because we refused to supply them vaccines."
"THAT'S RIDICULOUS!!"
The ministers both exchanged glances. Well, that was the only time they ain't lying.
"I think you should make a little change to that," Sae interrupted. "How about changing 'supply' to 'assist in production'?"
'Oh, sheesh, this little one,' they both thought. The Prime Minister reckoned the odd and threw his tantrum on them.
"Let me finish, sir. Of course that isn't the only issue they have with us. I suppose you still haven't known about Yanagisawa Kotaro, haven't you? We've only discovered it a while ago. Apparently, the Chadwick family had started a private investment in a project to create a biological antimatter weapon across the globe, and the unexpected came when Yanagisawa was the first to succeed and threatened against--"
"WHAT!?!" Sae and the Prime Minister both screamed at the top of their lungs.
"Turn out this was the key answer to all these times deduction," Sae became dizzy upon the shocking revelation. Mr. Nagasawa, meanwhile, tried his best to keep his mind clear.
However, unbeknownst to them, they didn't know they were under surveillance from the beginning and that these KGB agents had been listening to their conversation with eavesdropping devices in the room -- something they forgot to look out for -- and ultimately, that was the last time they were seen.
Back in the present day, Juria was still mourning about her dad and her best friend's disappearance. People around her, however, had moved on to another shocking news -- Arina Avenira was an Orlas sniper and was an apex murderer. Even more shockingly, according to Ren's claim, she was also the DAUGHTER of the notorious dictator Alexei Avenir, making people either shout for her to go back to her country or fear her, which the latter was more apparent.
She basically became an Uzumaki Naruto 2.0 over the night. And why were Ren's pictures of her diaries convincing to the public? Because he had also collected several side pieces of evidence along the way, plus all the audio records of a few hints she accidentally let slip. To make sure, the police immediately raided Arina's home and arrested her in her sleep as a spy suspect, investigated her house and hacked into her laptop, etc., whilst in the meantime interviewed the people in contact with her.
"Upon our first meeting, Big Sis had said we should be careful around her because her father is some sort of a powerful figure in her country," Butaro rummaged through his recollection and told them. "But I never would have thought she'd be Avenir's daughter. It's just incredibly unbelievable."
"It's...actually quite believable," said Japana. Sweat rolled down to his neck. "About the sniper thing -- it's reasonable. There's no explanation for a girl knowing how guns work as explicitly as she does. She looked like somebody who had gone through training before."
"And one more fact that she never misses, as shown in the live stream," added Goku nervously.
"And how she defeated me upon our first meet too," said Chibi, relieved that his pride was saved given his opponent wasn't a mere feeble little girl they believed to be all these times.
"I...can't believe it."
Everyone drew their attention to Ryuuki, who was gritting his teeth in utmost bitterness. Drenching in unfathomableness, he breathed, "She always said...it's wrong to afflict others...it's wrong to take others' lives, NOW WHAT!?"
"Ryuuki..."
"She lied to us," he confirmed in a tremoring demeanor. "Arina Avenira -- an Orlas spy -- how DISAPPOINTED I am with you!!"
When Asano first read the news, terror stabbed his heart as it leaped to his throat. In the blink of an eye, he called Arina which she didn't pick up and ran to search for her.
It was Saturday morning. At least the whole school wouldn't be gathered in one place and speak ill of her, so as Asano thought. Arina was under arrest by then and was brought to the police station for the second time until the government called and directed them to release her.
"What's happening?" the police questioned. Why would they want to release a clear suspect?
"Mr. Policeman, don't you see that I'm just a little girl whose highest ideal of earthly bliss is to marry my class president?" said Arina sleepily. "What do you think, Damyon or Dayum, which name do you prefer for my kid?"
"SHUT UP, YOU IMPOSTER!!" he turned around and scolded her.
"Well, what's happening then? Are you a camel...?" with a sloppy attitude, Arina was now fully awoken when a guard beside splashed water into her face.
"Jeez, it's currently eleven in the morning -- wake up already," one policeman hissed.
"I can't — I cried myself to sleep last night when Ren rejected my Stroking Cupcakes," said Arina. "Although I have a splendid idea. How about you try them on behalf of Ren? I swear even though the name gives you a thrill they won't give you a stroke."
"Oh, Sakakibara Ren, isn't that the boy who found out and reported your identity?" said the policeman. "He did us a huge favor indeed, or else we wouldn't be able to capture you."
"Hold on, can you say that again?" requested Arina, squinting her eyes in a state of denial.
"I said, if it wasn't for that boy who reported your identity, we wouldn't be able to capture you."
"One more time?" pleaded Arina.
"I SAID, IF IT WASN'T FOR THAT BOY WHO REPORTED YOUR IDENTITY, WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO CAPTURE YOU," he exasperatedly repeated.
Contrary to his belief, the girl maintained a calm composure and requested one more thing, "Oh, may you let me speak to him please? In private?"
"SHOULD I TELL YOU THAT THE WHOLE WORLD ARE NOW AWARE OF YOUR CRIME, GIRL?!" he revealed in an attempt to scare her off, which indeed worked this time.
"What?! No. No, no, no, no, NO! Nobody is supposed to know I haven't shaved my armpits for a month now!? But the WHOLE WORLD!?!" whined Arina in utmost disbelief. The police helplessly slapped their foreheads.
That one policeman exploded in anger, "I MEAN YOUR CRIME OF TAKING HUNDREDS' LIVES AND SPYING ON US!!"
"Oh, that one," snickered Arina, waving her hand. "Sorry, I'm quite sensitive with such topics about my self-image, oh wait, you aren't joking, aren't you dear Mr. Policeman?"
"We're talking serious here."
Arina Avenira lapsed into a silent mode. At first, it was hard to believe it. But as time passed with the police waiting for her response with serious looks intact on their faces, she soon accepted the fact, whilst her anxiety mounted with each tick the clock went by.
Observing her reaction, they now confirmed she was in fact what they had been suspected of her. But the thing was, they couldn't put her under arrest if the government officials wouldn't allow them to. Just what was going on?
"Oh, but, I vaguely heard you're to release me, wasn't it?" Arina hopefully spoke up at last.
There was nothing the police could do, and later that day Arina Avenira was released. However, what she couldn't escape was the rage and disappointment of the people in the nation.
She had lost the love of them all, at last...
God knew how important society's love and approval were to her...
Arina probably had a mental meltdown when she went through her phone which was bombarded with threatening messages (over a thousand of them) in a single morning, telling her to go back to her country. Comments such as 'Die, bitch', 'This bitch doesn't deserve to live', etc., were flooding her tweets non-stop. She had to immediately lock all her social media accounts.
With trembling hands, she dropped the phone for real this time. But...how did her acquaintances perceive this? She needed to know.
'Keep yourself together, Arina,' she told herself in a panic. 'Stay cleverly stoic, you can do it. Be cleverly stoic.'
When she headed outside to find her friends in the hope of clearing up misunderstandings by explaining how she did what she did with no evil intention, her feet put her to a halt upon wavering contemplation of her existence. 'Yes, you claimed three hundred lives, Arina, it wasn't as if you were purely angelically good. You have never been.', 'Yes, Arina, they are right. You are a spy. At least in the initial.', 'Yes, Arina, you are a selfish human being.', 'You acknowledge how many lives in the world were killed during the Cold War yet you continue to live on.'
"OMG, IT'S HER, ARINA AVENIRA! THE ABSOLUTE DISGUSTING HUMAN BEING ON EARTH!! YOU DAUGHTER OF THAT STINKY EVIL DICTATOR!!" a teenage girl saw her on the street and directed her friends' attention toward the deadliest girl alive with her index finger.
"Hey, I don't think it's a wise idea to do that," nudged one of the friends, whispering, as his face went pale. "You don't want to mess with that man's daughter..."
"I DON'T CARE!!" she exclaimed, with tears suddenly bursting out. "SHE STOLE MY BOYFRIEND ONCE!! NOW THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO GET BACK AT HER!!"
In contrast to going online, as soon as the strangers nearby were alerted by her presence, they abruptly scrammed off along with their fear of this dangerous girl pulling a random gun out of nowhere and shooting them, or possibly a knife. Arina at this point just stood still in one spot and hung her head low. She was thinking, as it seemed.
"No, stop!" the friends had to hold the girl back from getting involved in physical deeds.
"No worry, you can do it."
"Huh?" widening their eyes, the friends including the girl questioned in their heads whether what they heard from this Orlas criminal was true or not.
"It's alright, you CAN do it! you CAN beat me to death and I'm more than willing to take it!" cried Arina guiltily, throwing her arms open as an inviting gesture to land a hit on her body.
"Jeez, you must be very desperate for this then--" the girl was about to give Arina what she wished for until her friends intercepted her again.
"Please, Chihiro-san, she must have some trick under her sleeves -- she's going to pull out a knife when you get close or something!"
"Remember, she just got arrested a while ago yet she's freed now. It keeps bothering me that it must be Alexei Avenir putting pressure on all of us. You wouldn't want to hit the daughter of that dangerous man I swear!!"
"If no one is going to do it then I WILL do it!!" announced Arina dramatically. They were speechless when she punched herself very lightly on the cheek and said how she changed her mind about not wanting her pretty face to be ruined.
"Step aside, leave that to me," a random person walked into the mess of a scene, amid the bewilderment of everyone, he actually ruined poor Arina's face by sending her lying flat on her chest with his powerful punch.
Quickly whirled around to observe that person's face, Arina massaged her bruised cheek as tears exploded from her eyes as though two big waterfalls. She folded her arms and buried her face there, continuing to lie on the ground, weeping without an end.
"Why-y-y did you hit me-e-e-e-e--?"
'Isn't this what you wanted?' sweatdropped the witnesses.
Turned out it was the barber at the place she usually visited to get her hair done. He was a friendly and talented barber according to Arina. Her love for him was immeasurable, which was described through the way she always brought over gifts for him if she had time and constantly tipped him and supported his path to becoming the best barber in the world.
At least he didn't betray her by ruining her hair. Nevertheless, having her face ruined was still as painful as having a knife stabbed through her heart.
Unfortunately, Arina's pain was even doubled when she passed into the convenience store she was familiar with to grab some medical supplies only to have Yamada -- the cashier girl she had known and talked to for so long and seen as sister -- leering at her with a murderous type of face.
"No, sorry, I can't take you in as a guest."
"Bu-But..."
"No but, I won't sell stuff to you any longer, you freaking Orlas spy."
Arina's heart bleeding condition worsened. But it wasn't until the comrade brothers she loved as though her own flesh and blood rode their motorcycles past her with insulting, vulgar words such as, 'Dogs won't even desire your meat when they have it thrown at them.', 'Fucking phony!' and Ryuuki blatantly spat into her face that Arina had completely lost her mind and proceeded to escape this awfully horrible -- horrible world.
'Ting! Ting! Ting!' private messages flooded her phone as she ran. Her friends, her classmates, everyone, everyone. Even Seo, Teppei, Koyama, Mei, Ami, the K-squad members, and many more were assaulting her with their damage-inflicting texts.
Oh, Arina no longer cared when cherry blossom will bloom. The world had peeled from pink to darkness. It had turned its back on her. Running wasn't going to help her escape from it, though without thinking, she just kept running -- running toward the sunset.
"Ah!" shrieked Arina, as she stumbled over a rock on the ground and fell. A child passing by tugged on his mother's dress and pointed at her.
"Look, mama, she fell!"
"Don't. even. look. at. that. girl."
Sobbing, Arina overheard the two and just had to sympathize with the mother, supporting herself up with her bruised knee. It was dangerous to even stare at a mass murderer, wasn't it? Suppose she were to be in their shoes, she would've done that too!
Tears just kept spilling forth without a sign of stopping, her heart bled to her feet, Arina gave up on running away from this world she lived in and cowered herself on the ground she wept, wept, and wept. Bypassers avoided her like a plague.
'Even with so many people around never have I felt so lonely,' the inner self of her cried in the depth of despair. 'I'm so deeply sorry, Mr. World, you are always lovely -- always, and always. It's only my fault to be unable to see it now. Even at my worst, I will forever be glad that you let me live inside you.'
"Arina!" from the distance called a voice.
'What was it, Mr. World?'
"Arina!!" the voice became clearer.
'I will hereafter try to be more understanding toward people.'
"ARINA!!"
Snapping out of her guilty thoughts, Arina realized -- Asano Gakushuu pulled her standing up and into his arms.
"Here you are. I've been looking for you," he whispered, soothing the back of her hair with his gentle hand.
Out of the people in this world, he was the only one -- the only one...but hadn't it gotten worse when Arina felt even more guilty than before.
"I...I had negative thoughts about this world just moments ago, Asano-kun," she confided, tears soaked into his shirt. She wept even louder. At this point, Asano had entirely disregarded the public's opinion about him, as they gaped at the scene and pulled their phones out to film it.
"...I shouldn't have been so ungrateful to this lovely world, because, well, see? It's always perfectly lovely when I still have you with me, my dear Asano-kun."
"I'm here for you," he spoke gently, wiping every drop of tears rolling down her rosy cheek, hugging her tighter.
"And even if you weren't, it's still as perfectly lovely as it had always been, because it gave me all the nicest memories of earthly bliss, and I'm fully confident that history can repeat itself if I make up my mind firmly that it will."
"Don't be worried," smiled Asano. "Because I will always be here for you. Always."
***
April 2018. The brigade drove a dusty track into the miles ahead beyond the Iron Curtains. The wall had been brought down. As the Vodnik bellowed past the territory, Arina felt as if they were being watched by ten thousand Cy-clopic eyes. The Germans from the West.
Sergey Fedorov -- previous ZE general -- had resigned from his work to join her division. For what reason?
They disembarked the vehicle. Fedorov clambered out of the truck and lowered his trousers and peed into the wreckage of buildings. He looked over to the sixteen-year-old medic girl who was staring at the soldier setting up the transceiver. No rifle slung on her back. Underneath her uniform were bruises from the number of times she disobeyed and remained loyal with her ideals. The scale of cruelty tipped when she almost suffered from eternal brain damage from constant striking. Almost that time she had been unable to make new memories, barely conscious of where she was.
"Crazy," a soldier said.
"Crazy chick."
"Let's get going, Avenira," Fedorov told her. He was there thanks to her craziness. No one in history had ever thought of what she would do.
"You know, Fedorov," in retrospection she spoke, "The world may not be perfectly lovely. But as long as there's still hope — hope is wonderfully lovely — the world remained as lovely as ever."
Fedorov stiffened. The angelically good girl smiled.
"I, Arina Avenira, am the hope. I will save humanity with my bare hands. Count it for me, will you? Until exceeding three hundred, I will not die."
