59: The Lovebird
Arina Avenira -- a girl who wrote herself into history for changing the game of women's figure skating. She was the original. She was the Quad Queen. Tsaplina jumped a quad combo, while she jumped two quad combos and a single quad. But was Anna's score of 166.87 too high? Was that even make sense? Those were what was happening in Asano's head.
"I love you -- ooh, I love you too!" waved Arina with both arms at the fans in the audience seats, giggling bubbly. She even skated to greet every single lucky fan sitting on the lower level of the stadium, receiving gifts directly from them as well as picking up stuffed animals that were thrown on the rink on the way.
"You did very well, Arina, I have a big surprise for you at home," Asano had run down in sheer eagerness and clutched her hands tightly when she approached. His dedication never disappoint him, because the pure delight in Arina's amiable, glistening set of eyes never ceased to make him feel like the happiest boy in the world.
"AVENIRA!" Petrosyan's imposing voice chased her throughout the ice rink as Arina snapped back in realization.
"I'm awfully grateful, Asano-kun, and I gotta go now! You ought to wish me luck for the score so I can be worthy of all your consideration!" said Arina gleefully.
Asano smiled and nodded, watching her skate away from his sight. Somehow, an uneasy feeling hit upon him -- what if the same situation from yesterday repeats?
Arina was reprimanded by Petrosyan for wasting time greeting the audience. "Oh, but it just feels so good to get to know each person there is in this world," was her response which unfortunately resulted in even more negative reaction from her coaches.
Sitting between Petrosyan and Dyamin, Arina eagerly glanced upward at the big screen where they announced the score.
"Sorry, I fainted for a while," Teppei fixed his glasses seconds after regaining consciousness. "Well, where are we now? Oh, it's time for the final score already? Then it's no question that Arina Avenira is going to win this free program as this routine is even eligible to compete with the men's division!"
Teppei wasn't alone in his thinking, because the entirety of the folks in this arena were as well, all of whom were so sure they were willing to bet their house that Arina would score the highest.
Unbeknownst to them, Arina was the girl who had the world turned its back against her. When the result came out lower than Anna Tsaplina, being 166.62, the whole arena sank into complete silence. It was so eerily quiet that if one shut their eyes, they wouldn't be able to tell a little more than 5000 people were compacted within this place.
On contrary to yesterday, they just stood up and left, right before the announcement of the final score, in silence. Some times later there were tears from children, and finally, bashes from the highly active fans.
During everything that had happened Arina, too, remained silent. She roved her eyes from the coaches to the other competitors, to the judges, to the audience, and back to the coaches. Suddenly her overwhelming bitterness kicked in, and she wasn't so sure what within her was either resentment or despair or maybe both. Dropping her new stuffed animal friends she sprang off to wherever away from mortal gazes that put her coaches in a dumbfounded state.
["The total score is 244.34. Arina Avenira is currently in third place."]
The final scores adding up both the short and free programs were as followed:
1st ranked: Natalia Tarasova (244.90)
2nd ranked: Anna Tsaplina (244.81)
3rd ranked: Arina Avenira (244.34)
4th ranked: Sakamoto Ayusa (228.82)
5th ranked: Hidaka Mami (217.49)
"There you are, I've been looking for you," said Asano, as he spotted Arina curled up like a ball in a corner of the backstage makeup room.
"No, please, Asano-kun, I need to be alone. The world right now is in the depths of despair."
"You will have to come out for the medal ceremony soon," reminded Asano, kneeling to her level. "Look, the score isn't as important -- your performances are recorded, Arina, and you landed those jumps in the official ISU this time; you are the first woman to break the TES with more than 100 points and people shall always look up to you as a pioneer. You made history, Arina, be proud of what you did."
"Bu-bu-but, Asano-kun, but still! Having an idealistic mindset but being unable to comply with it every time is really BOTHERING me!" wept Arina. "I just can't, Asano-kun, o-o-oh, I should've been grateful still, especially with many who love me is too much goodness in this world and it makes me want to smile perhaps forever, but would you pity me when I say my heart can barely withstand the way the judges hate me so much after I spent six hours each day practicing and got injured three times? -- I AM a good girl, Asano-kun -- I NEVER take any drugs!"
Of course Asano felt pity for her as he rubbed her back in comfort. But wanting to drag her out of the depth of despair, he just had to cover it up with words of congratulation for her immaculate achievements.
He handed her his handkerchief as Arina unhesitatingly took it and blew her nose in it and wept further.
'Ew,' Asano thought.
"Alright -- alright, come on, you should get going," he said and pulled her standing up, leading her back to the rink. Unbeknownst to Arina, Asano's mind right now was full of plans to sue the judges later.
"They must be disappointed in me beyond measure, oh, Asano-kun..." sniffed Arina.
"No, they are disappointed at the judges," restated Asano.
"But still, I would never want anyone to feel any sort of disappointment," she heaved a sigh.
They were back at the rink and immediately Arina was forced to go on the ice for the ceremony. Her father's wish had been accomplished -- three Orlas flags on the podium, the other nations were no match for them.
["Representing the Union of Orlas People's Republic, Arina Avenira!"]
Without any cheering from the audience, Arina kept a blank face as she bowed like a robot with the music of her free program playing in the background and reluctantly got onto the lowest platform on the podium.
The same thing repeated for Anna and Natalia as they got the honor to stand on the higher platforms with Natalia being the highest and the center, smiling proudly. Arina in the meantime had her face paled upon having never won first in a competition before.
The spectators didn't bother cheering anymore as no flags and banners were shown on the audience seats. The Kunugigaoka students were all keeping their silence; on the other hand, the P.E. teacher and the high school thugs were booing harshly over this unfair result and the kids were screaming and crying.
The three Orlas girls each received the according medals and bouquets of flowers and there it went, the sheer Evil Empire's victory. The three flags of the hammer and sickle as the emblem, which represented the symbols of the industrial worker and the peasant (A/n: keep in mind that this fictional country does not 100% represent communism, maybe more toward Stalinism is more like it) were hoisted in the background. Patriotism was blasting throughout the entire site of the stadium. Powerful and majestic. All the members of the Petrosyan team were forced to sing their national anthem once it was put on.

Some were startled at the first note. By this time half the audience already left the arena due to the unfair treatment of Arina Avenira. Perhaps this would come out as a scandal for the ISU once the tournament was over. Some who were still present pulled their phones out to record Arina's mascara smudged eyes and runny nose, having to force herself to sing the anthem nevertheless.
"Poor Big Sis!!!" Ryuuki, too, cried and was followed by the whole gang.
The kids for now had passed on that phase and were sniffing in grief.
Meanwhile, people like Mr. Uchida had been arrested for assaulting the judges, physically. The rest just accepted this nonsense of reality and remained quiet, waiting to get home so they could expose the skating association.
Ren, despite cheering for all the girls, actually felt bad for Arina as he waited when the Big Four wasn't around to approach her, one of the motives was according to the agreement between him and Morikawa and Tanaka.
"Arina-chan~" he chirped just when she finished changing into her daily dress and walked out of the bathroom. "Long time no see~"
Arina seemed to be distracted for a moment as she rubbed her mascara-smudged eyes and widened them upon the bizarre sight of his bald hair.
"Your-your-your-- where's your HAIR?!"
"Oh, my girlfriend said I suit this style better, so~" explained Ren, now flipping his nonexistent hair.
"Oh, Ren," Arina drew a long breath, "Oh! She surely IS right! Never have I imagined how it would look this good on you -- I mean, the no-hair hairstyle that, whoever your girlfriend is this time she is just brilliant! But I figured the only con you would experience is that you wouldn't feel the wind blowing through your hair no longer which I must say, Ren, is one of the most light-hearted feelings ever! As for having your dress fluttering through the air and floating behind you as you walk -- there's just something so special about itself that others shall not compare."
"Exactly~ like your performances for instance," said Ren, in an attempt of reassuring Arina that she did great.
Arina walked back to the makeup room to remove her horrible makeup at last accompanied by Ren who was taking his time to chat with her before the very likeliness of the Big Four approaching them.
"Oh well, Anya and Natasha are still changing, anyway, how is dear Seo doing at your place, Ren? Do you feed him very well?" Arina was acting as though she was Seo's guardian, blinking in curiosity. She then took another cotton pad to have her eye aggressively wiped using it.
"Very well~ don't worry, Arina, he's living the best life he ever had with the girls around every day~ you can come join us too if you would like."
On the spur of the moment, Seo's constant warnings about Ren flashed back into her mind, 'I could sense it -- those two witches must have manipulated him into something -- NEVER trust him!' but sometimes Arina's positivity and delights would just overshadow her intuition as she gladly accepted the invitation and again associated with Sakakibara Ren without Asano's knowing.
Just as Ren predicted, a minute after Asano and his minions had found their way to Arina's location, to which she noticed and hid Ren away before they did. Seo was the first one to outwardly express his disappointment:
"THIS is intolerable, Arina! Why didn't you spit on their faces!?"
He immediately got silenced by his leader whilst Teppei was recording Arina's reaction aftermath of the scandal and Koyama was giggling, 'nishishishi' whilst disparaging one of the judges' hideous glasses.
"I'm going to get this settled later, Arina, because again this is unacceptable," even Asano had finally declared, folding his arms.
"Oh, and I think I'm ablaze with randomness!" again Arina got over her bitterness because the prospect of her extreme gratitude toward her precious supporters was indeed too much overwhelming goodness in this world. 'One day I shall return it all, I promise,' her mind spoke.
But what drove her into tears once again, not over being in the depths of despair, but for that same gratitude but larger amounts, was the moment she got out to be greeted by everyone -- from the audience to her fellow competitors from other teams to their coaches — all with the same purpose — to encourage and assure her she was the best of them all, the well-worthy queen of quads.
"Big Sis!! Nevermind those dumbass people, you're FOREVER the greatest!!" the gang proclaimed.
"Arina Avenira forever!!"
"Big sis Arina, you're the real champion in our hearts!" the little Arina enthusiasts cried out.
"You're honestly greater than any Orlas girl I've ever competed with," said Hidaka Mami whilst flashing a smile.
"Can I have your signature please!?"
"Hey -- hey! I forgot to ask for this earlier but a signature from you would be very awesome~" Karma jumped in with a photograph and a pen. "This would definitely come in handy in the future~"
"Arina, may I take a picture of you and this little girl right here together? She is just crazy about you," requested Juria, leading the shy Maya forward as the little girl had never blushed this heavily before, even when facing the real Marie Ebara.
"Hey, it's me, Kure Jomei, I just want to let you know that that was a great arbitrary program you did, and you will still have gold medals. You're going to have whatever you're looking for. Even many Olympic champions are jealous of what you can do. You're an incredibly gifted athlete. They may have gold medals in their career, Avenira-san, but they can't repeat what you did."
Jomei wasn't aware of his impact as he only made Arina cry louder out of happiness. Hang in there, young girl. Even though time flows in one direction, as long as there is time, nothing can be constant. Blossoms will wither. Snowflakes will melt. Heavy black ink can be light too when dropped one drop into a glass of water, dissolving into smoke. 'I'm ablaze with randomness' so was her path of life. Happy moments were made to cherish forever.
After Ren reported to Morikawa and Tanaka about having interacted with Arina for the first time in a while, they manipulated him further by cheering him on so he would go according to their plan of 'uncovering Arina and Asano's secret relationship' when in fact, it was to find out her weakness to dump a scandal on her for perhaps forever, and thus the biggest love rival will be permanently eliminated.
Because Ren was eager to unwrap his former leader's secret, he was all in for this. Firstly, as Morikawa said, he will have to discover Arina's weaknesses so they could blackmail her, thus pressuring her to spill the beans. Ren wasn't a fan of this aspect, though keeping his promise, he had to nevertheless. It wasn't so bad after all, or so he thought.
After the tournament the girls were assembled for an interview. One reporter blatantly inquired Arina questions such as, 'How do you feel about your loss to Tarasova and Tsaplina?', 'How much figure skating is a traumatic sport?' to which she shocked them by answering in a way nobody has ever thought of:
"I suppose I feel quite happy for dear Anya and Natasha, as long as they are happy with the result. But I wasn't a bit happy minutes ago. I was falling into the depths of despair clear through, and if it wasn't for the lovely people cheering for me I would stay bitter all year. I know I would because I did stay bitter for a whole month after losing to Asano-kun on a roshambo. And when you did get over the depths of despair you started realizing what was going on, just like when your temper eased your calm state of mind will bring you to many possibilities. For me in one way I saw that whatever thing there is it is a stuff of fiction. I've never realized it but I am now, humans are such creatures with incredible imagination; from the brand of the clothes I'm wearing to the grading system to money and to the final score I've received, are only a thing in our heads. But one thing I'm sure of is that the love I've been receiving and the love I've got for everyone and the importance of each individual are not just imagination. It's real and I shall treasure it forever and a day."
But because of humans' vivid imagination, the world escalated into an alarming danger. After the Orlas Union had their satisfying victory and the honor of their claim to being the best in winter sports, the team and their guards proudly showcased their flags around the arena. And after another day of the exhibition gala, it was time to say goodbye to the members of the Petrosyan team. Arina was present at the airport as well as the Big Four and this time the minions had tried their best to communicate with the girls in their native language as compensation for the last time.
"My dad said you were his favorite, Tarasova, I hope one day you would pay Japan a visit once again to meet him in person," said Teppei, with quite an accent. Natalia blinked over a few times to catch what he was trying to say.
"Aaah, yes, yes I would! Probably when there's another tournament!" she finally responded after Arina repeated the sentence. Seo scoffed at Teppei for his horrible accent and proceeded to do the same, or even worse. Koyama in the meantime was so terrible at speaking skills he opted to stay quiet with his signature, 'Nishishishi'. Asano clicked his tongue at these minions' incompetence.
"It's a great experience here in Japan, especially the locals here that I found to be very warm as opposed to common misconceptions. Again, thank you for supporting us," the boys' jaws dropped when Anna Tsaplina finished the sentence in Japanese and bowed to them in the respectful Japanese style before heading to the boarding gate. She was indeed a fast learner, something she was well-known for.
"And remember me as the dearest little sister who one day WILL bring joy to everyone in the world -- even in our world!" exclaimed Arina most earnestly and happily, waving her arm comprehensively after them.
Later when Asano escorted her home and she suddenly recalled his decision to have things settle with the judges later, Arina had Asano surprised by saying:
"Do you know why I'm a lucky girl disguised as a lucky girl and the other way around, Asano-kun?"
"No."
"Because even in the happiest moment there is risk and, oh, isn't it just lovely to think that, in every adversity there's still a thing to smile about? 'Sometimes life hides gifts in the darkest of places', that's such a delightful saying and I say it to myself every day, so you needn't blame the judges anymore, Asano-kun, because see? I've already won! If some people out there have it in their minds that I didn't I shall be careless, because nothing is real after all, but if I make it in my mind that I did, then I really do."
What was it like to have a strong character? One might ask. The answer was in order to be strong, one must have a mind of steel, and the key to a mind of steel was optimism. Real optimism -- the ability to spot gifts hidden in the shadow. Arina had seemingly recognized this on the way to her maturity. Whenever life knocks you down, never think it treats you unfairly, but rather, a gift for you to learn to become stronger, perhaps to open your eyes to new things, see things from a different perspective, and it will be ten thousand times easier to stand up after each time. Keep fighting, forever, and a day.
On one Saturday at noon, after making sure class E of 'Ecstacy' was doing well with the supplementary class (for the Nth time), Arina was told to be over at Asano's house so he could, well, spend time with her without the acknowledgment of the public since it was the only period in this week he was free from busy schedules.
"No, no, no, no, no! You MUST have cheated, Asano-kun! There is NO way I would be THIS terrible at Shogi!" said Arina in resentment. Asano laughed and assured her she would never be better than him.
"I HATE you!" Arina, though with a long-term strong yet temporarily weak mindset, began bursting out crying to Asano's perplex.
"Alright, I will teach you to be as good as I do, deal?" he unfolded his arms and went around the table to gently wipe her tears away. 'He had INDEED gone mellow' as Arina thought in the process, and an idea popped in her head.
"Oh, Asano-kun, I'm just wondering if-- you know, if you could perhaps give poor Ren a chance?"
"NO!" Asano snapped back almost immediately, furrowing his eyebrows. Well, that was one thing he could never go mellow for...but regardless Arina hadn't given up as she clasped her hands and pleaded further for the sake of her kindred friend.
"Asano-kun!" she said wide-eyed. "You're the guiding light of HUMANITY! No one shall be left behind under your leadership, o-oh, you're just that great, Asano-kun! Even the most sinful, rotting individual out there will shed their skin for a redemption arc while undergoing your guidance. But, Asano-kun, it's just that you have to give them a chance."
"For a society to function properly, it's best to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible by eliminating rotting individuals. It's no use to keep them," returned Asano. Nevertheless, still, Arina won't give up on defending Ren!
"Bu-bu-but what if that rotting individual is compulsory to your success? Say, Asano-kun, why can't you be mellow toward others? Is it that you like me too much? Oh, as much as I'm glad, I think it would be indeed lovelier if you could share that with Ren--"
"I don't like you!" Asano abruptly denied, crossing his arms.
"Why-y-y--?" that had Arina misunderstood as she nearly fainted away. "Bosom friends AREN'T supposed to dislike each other? Oh...my life and heart..."
"HE'S LYING!" from the kitchen counter yelled Asano's mother.
"Don't listen to her -- she's being ridiculous," said Asano calmly.
Arina sighed as she prodded her cheek on her palm, "Oh well, whatever it is, I still cherish you nevertheless, Asano-kun -- I've never found anyone as caring and loving as you are -- maybe I did but can't remember, though for now, it's you. It's February now but oh, I'm so very much looking forward to my birthday in the next two years! I will be FOUR years old by then, Asano-kun! Will you surprise me with something over the top? Maybe a proper birthday party would be very lovely -- here's how I picture it: a party on a beach, oh, I know! How about a party on a cruise ship? And oh, yes, that's right!" she was saying this all along with the expectation that Asano would take note and implement them like many last times, "And then we can take on a tour to see the Titanic deep in the ocean -- what a splendid idea, don't you think? -- Oh, Asano-kun! Oh, Asano-kun!! Oh, Asano-kun!!! Who's that gorgeous lovebird right there in your house!!?"
Asano was actually taking notes in his head when he was violently shaken by Arina to alert him out of distraction.
"Oh my my! Why hadn't you told me you're keeping a lovebird?" she exclaimed and without further ado, rushed to see the bird in the cage at the corner of the living room.
'And why hadn't you noticed since the beginning?' thought Asano, rolling his eyes.
"What's its name by the way? Oh, Mr. Birdman? What a wonderfully brilliant name indeed! It's just me or did Mr. Birdman just say, 'Shit', Asano-kun? Why would you teach such things? Or perhaps there's another meaning to 'shit' that I didn't know?" said Arina curiously. Her glistening eyes wide opened at the pretty lovebird in the cage, mouth gaped.
"It's not ours," confirmed Asano when he approached. "Remember Mr. Urushiyama? That man always comes to my father whenever he was away and couldn't take care of something. Of course he has helpers, but it seems like his tendency to rely on father had woven into his brain."
Arina looked like she didn't pay any attention to what he was saying.
"Oh, Asano-kun, don't you just love them? -- the lovebirds, I mean -- because I do. They are a very romantical species of bird, you could certainly tell that by their name. Did you know that they mate for life? They choose each other out of all the other lovebirds in the world and they stay together UNTIL death do them part," with that same glistening set of eyes she said very dreamily.
Asano, too, in a split second dreamed of staying with her forever but swiftly brushed it off and returned to the dining table they were sitting at.
"Want another game?" he asked, gesturing at the Shogi board.
Arina smiled and shook her head, "I will beat you on another day. Right now I'm trying to teach Mr. Birdman to say, 'I love you', is it so much better than 'Shit' isn't it? I suppose little Naruto was the one responsible for this. He's too sinful for this world."
"Damn right," agreed Asano.
He helped Arina with her attempt for another fifteen minutes when his mother suddenly called from across the room.
"Gakushuu! Isn't now the time for you to get dressed and leave? Come on, let's hurry."
"Where are you going, Asano-kun?" blinked Arina in curiosity. Asano patted her head and told her he would be back in a few hours.
"We're leaving for a dine-out because a business partner of father kept prodding him to show off his wife and son. You could go home now or stay here depending on you. If you choose to stay then keep an eye on the bird for me. I fed it already so you don't have to."
"Of course I would stay with Mr. Birdman!" decided Arina certainly. "How else would he be when there's no one around him? It isn't a bit nice to be lonely."
With a quick kiss on Arina's forehead from Mrs. Asano Sayaka together she left with her son to the restaurant, now leaving the girl home alone with the lovebird.
"It seems like we're going to experience quite an adventure, you and I," said Arina, grinning broadly.
"Shit!" replied Mr. Birdman.
"No, no, no, no, no! No shit, only 'I love you'!" lectured Arina.
"Shit!" replied Mr. Birdman.
"You stupid bird!" she unintentionally blurted out and immediately apologized to it.
"Stupid!" replied Mr. Birdman.
"NO!" gasped Arina, paling.
In the end instead of learning how to say, 'I love you', Mr. Birdman had acquired a new word, and that was 'Stupid'. Arina bit on her nails in fear of everyone finding out she was the culprit responsible for this.
"Well, Mr. Birdman, I will show you how detrimental those words are," she announced and fled to find a paper and pen, then a moment later returned with two pictures she drew.
"Stupid! Shit!" said Mr. Birdman.
"Bad bird! See? Look at this -- look, look!" prompted Arina, pointing at the dying lovebird drawn by her on the paper. "If you keep saying that, then your loved ones will get offended by you and die a painful death -- just like this! You wouldn't want to kill them, haven't you?"
"Stupid! Shit!" replied Mr. Birdman.
"But if you say 'I love you' then they would be very happy," said Arina softly, showing another drawing this time, of a drawn lovebird holding its pulsating heart, flushing red. "Alright? Say, 'I love you'."
"Stupid! Shit!" replied Mr. Birdman.
"You know what, Mr. Birdman? I reckon you probably hadn't eaten that well. If you do then you must have had those three words in your head already -- so, may you show me where your food is?"
"Stupid! Shit!" replied Mr. Birdman.
Arina's pity was at her throat as she went rummaging for the bird's food around the house. It took her roughly five minutes to find a pack of seeming food for Mr. Birdman in a drawer of the TV cabinet and went to feed it with a spoonful of food.
"I think you're not that attractive, Mr. Birdman, your problem is being too skinny," commented Arina, literally forcing the bird to eat. "But you will after this meal, don't be very worried."
After an hour the bird came out as fat as a balloon. Arina too decided to have dinner. She was about to enter the kitchen when the thought of Mr. Birdman being all sad and depressed for being left alone hit her, and that will have her do the dumbest thing in the history of her career.
"Oh, Mr. Birdman, why do humans lock you all in a cage I wonder. Isn't that being a bird with wings allow you to experience freedom in the great never-ending sky? Now comes to think of it you have it worse than dear Sokrovische I must say. But between you and the Asano family's fate I just couldn't decide. I would like to set you free once and forever, but I also couldn't bare the risk of Chairman Asano and Mr. Urushiyama's relationship going downhill. Say, Mr. Birdman, how about I release you just for a while? Still better than never, hasn't it? -- Alright."
Arina was close to opening the cage when snapped back and realized the windows were still open. She went to close them all and eagerly skipped back and opened the cage without hesitation. The bird instantly flew out.
"Fancy. You may roam around and explore as much as it pleases you while I'm going to cook, Mr. Birdman -- have a fantastic adventure!" she waved happily and set off to the kitchen.
Even with clanking and banging in the background, Arina's head was too high up the clouds to even take any notice. She was in a great deal of reverie, it seemed.
"Yes, this will do nicely for dancing," she placed a plate on the table and stood on the chair, slightly taking hold of her beige-colored dress and twirling around. "My maid, perhaps you can fashion a small loop at the hem, so I can lift the train -- oh many thanks, why, another thanks from me, I do so appreciate your careful attention. I think it's ever so important to give credit where credit is due. Well, I will go take the tea in the library -- I will go check on Mr. Birdman and his exciting adventure as well, and take him to climb the ladder until he reaches Mount Everest, oh, I almost forgot, he had wings! Oh, Mr. Birdman, where are you? Mr. Birdman? Mr. Birdman!!"
Arina's entire world collapsed the moment she stepped out to see that she slept on a tiny opened window in between the bookshelves, the one which Mr. Birdman just flew through before her eyes.
"NOOOOO!" exclaimed Arina, chasing after it until she reached the window and witnessed that the lovebird was too heavy that it bumped into a utility pole and dropped to the ground.
Just then the neighbor's dog also happened to pass by and stopped before the bird. Taking a good sniff in, it licked and proceeded to...swallow it.
All the bright prospects of her future fell out of her vision in a blink of an eye as Arina's face had never gone paler than before, clawing her nails to her cheeks. It was at this moment, she knew, she f'd up.
