37: Arina's Biggest Passion
A/n: Here is what Lilliana Chadwick looks like!! I tried different art styles but this is the prettiest so I settle down with it.
"Ch-Chairman Asano, I-I have injured my back during practicing; therefore I'm afraid I couldn't compete in the competition this year," informed Ozawa Miku from class 2-B nervously. (A/n: What's up with all the competitions lately lol idk xD)
The chairman's back was facing her. If you scan around his dark office, you could see that his school had won countless competitions against other schools through the trophies they got, however, there was still one cup missing -- the Junior High Figure Skating Championships.
Miku watched the chairman turning to face her in his task chair with sweat rolling down her face. What was he going to comment on this?
"I don't care. As long as you have the determination in you, even if you have to die, you will still have to do it," said the chairman darkly. A smile flickered across his malicious face.
Of course he was someone who would say stuff like that, what did Miku expect from him? Although, despite saying so, the chairman's competitive nature still told him to find a plan b in case. And that decision had led Arina to his office today after school.
"Oh, yes, ice skating is indeed very popular in my country!" confirmed Arina, who had no idea she was about to get exploited. "I've enjoyed every moment of my life being on the ice. As a kid in Normady it's normal to take them to the ice rink as soon as they turn three. But, oh, I was late for the game. I didn't learn how to skate until I was eleven! But as soon as I did, people stared at me as I was simply the shinest star in the night. It came very naturally for me indeed and I've managed triple jumps within a month! Lutz was easy for me and so was Toeloop, Salchow was okay and so were the rest. But the Axel though, oh, chairman Asano, the Axel! I've only managed to jump the double Axel but certainly not the triple. And -- hang on for a second, do you think it's rather dark in here? Do you think your face deserves to be clearly viewed by people without them having to squint their eyes to keep track of your lovely facial features? I said lovely because I think you certainly look lovely, chairman Asano. Alright, see? A bright room does brighten your mood!"
Arina went to turn on the light in the chairman's office without his permission, which lightened up his dark face and there was no longer this mysterious, scary effect on him.
A smile etched over his face and there was a subtle hint of annoyance in it as he pretended to be unbothered. He leaned closer to his desk and placed his chin on his intertwined hands.
"Avenira, I want you to participate in the Figure Skating Championships this year. Only the free program."
"Oh, chairman Asano, as much as I'd like to, I'm afraid I couldn't!" cried Arina in honesty. "Asano-kun said that he wished to accomplish more goals for our band and I'm very much obliged to help him on his path. We will have a tour in Yokohama this weekend and after that we will release more CDs and albums and there will be ever so much to do. Do you reckon that producing music to cheer up people is so much of a solemn thing to do?"
"Solemnity has nothing to do with it. Winning a gold cup for our school is," stated the chairman. "Quit wanting to help Asano-kun to achieve his goal. It's his duty, not yours. And to win the first gold cup for the pride of our school is what you define solemnity. You can already imagine the joy on everyone's face when you claim the cup."
That's it -- chairman Asano manipulated Arina into wanting to achieve something for the sake of everyone in the school. After learning about Ozawa Miku's condition, she instantly accepted the chairman's desire. However, with one request that she will start training for the free program after her music tour in Yokohama.
On Friday evening the 'ONE' members took the direct train to Yokohama whilst carrying instruments on their backs. Arina was like a mother to them. She packed bento boxes with her in case any of them were hungry, and of course, the thing that defined her character -- homemade sweets! Extremely important, as seeing others eating the stuff she made helped her release so many dopamines.
These so-claimed high-class kids had booked a villa with six rooms for a two-night stay. They WERE indeed high-class though, for they already make more money than an average adult for their band's fame, especially Asano since he knew exactly how to invest money and was extremely successful in it.
"My, Koyama, there's sauce on your face. Here, let me," giggled Arina on the train upon seeing Koyama's messy eating face whilst wiping his face with a handkerchief. The rest, however, thought he was low-class and ate like a disgusting pig.
"Koyama, you should practice your etiquette to be considered one of us. You're such a low-class loser," Seo didn't hesitate to blurt out rudely.
Among them, Koyama Natsuhiko was the lowest ranking in social status while the rest all came from a wealthy background. And considering he was the last to join their group, there were still things he needed to learn to fit in.
"Don't be so mean, Seo," facepalmed Teppei. Even though they were best friends, sometimes he just couldn't stand his friend's ill-natured.
Koyama dropped his never-ending smile, forming a sad look. Arina noticed and gave him a cheerful smile for comfort.
"But I do think you should improve your posture, Koyama," she added.
They arrived at the villa in Yokohama at night and Asano instantly went ahead and claimed the king-size bedroom without saying a word. The rest had to fight for the smaller ones instead.
For the rest of the night, they merely rested and studied whilst Arina had a self-care routine for the upcoming concert tomorrow in the biggest stadium in Yokohama. The best part was that there will also be various famous singers and bands attending the concert.
The K-squad trio begged Arina if she could ask for the famous singer and actor Kasuga Ken's signature for them and the boys in her class asked if she could ask for Marie Ebara's (she's Kanna Hashimoto it's just that I had to change her name ;)) signature and for her to answer their questions. Arina was curious and looked up all these names and apparently, she found Kasuga Ken incredibly attractive and finally reckoned why Juria looked so familiar upon their first meeting. It was Marie Ebara that resembled Juria's facial features a lot.
There will also be rookie bands attending the concert. Some of them were rather mean to Asano and his minions the next day when they arrived at the stadium. But all Asano did was sneer at them in a scornful way for he knew they were just jealous of their early success.
"Tch, you won't be famous for too long," mumbled Xoxo (what kind of stage name is this?) -- the leader of Kraken, another rookie band that debuted around the same time as ONE -- whilst his band members stuck their tongues out mocking their rivals.
"I would be in the depth of despair if we ever flop," admitted Arina mournfully. "You know what awful thing the depth of despair is. Just IMAGINE it. I'd be very much staying every night to work on new songs if that ever happens. But I'm rather sure we won't ever, as I already am staying up every night to work on catchy songs. My band's leader expressed his wish for our band's future and I shall embrace it with all my heart. And I wish all the best for you all too! Perhaps we could collab in the future if it won't bother you too much that you don't like us. But nevertheless you all are lovely and I'd be very glad if we could collab."
The Kraken members despised everyone in ONE except for Arina. Barbie -- the female vocalist of Kraken -- however, didn't like Arina either. Kraken was a punk rock group, in which the members followed the rebellious punk style of the 70s, and it explained why they flopped since their music and concept weren't the taste of the majority of people by that time.
In the makeup room, Arina met up with Marie Ebara, who was going to be the MC for the concert. She excitedly went to ask for her signature and poor Marie had to sign at least forty pieces of her poster and a full package of answering requested fans' questions. Despite that, Marie took a liking to Arina-girl and saw her as a bright little thing.
During the preparation for the concert, Asano had gone around to greet his idol friends which made the rest gape in awe at how wide his social network was. Ren tagged alongside him to meet the female idols and so were Seo, Teppei, and Koyama opted to join Ren. The female idols (obviously) ignored Seo and Koyama and only talked to the other three. But until then, Koyama still had no idea the problem with him was being overly ugly in others' eyes. Seo, on the other hand, acknowledged it and angrily marched away, thinking to himself he might get a plastic surgery procedure in the future. But he had no idea the problem with him was not being ugly but being ill-natured.
While the boys were busy meeting up with the gorgeous female idols, there was Arina unraveled the newest emotion she hadn't experienced once in her life before when she happened to encounter Kasuga Ken when he entered the makeup room. Kasuga looked extremely fine in photos but in real life? He looked like he could swallow Arina's tender heart any time he wanted. Arina liked him not just for his looks which fit her taste perfectly, but for his personality as well. You may wonder how he looked like that had Arina head over heels for him, you might need to know Arina had an obsession with charming princes (Okay, Björn Andrésen is her type). Kasuga Ken possessed a handsome yet feminine look that matched prince Boris in her imagination so much. And by personality...in Arina's eyes was to talking to his dogs on a regular basis and playing the violin as she thought it was perfectly romantic.
"So what if humanity vanishes tomorrow and you are the only one left and have to pick one person to be with you for the rest of your life? Who-who would that be?" was the first sentence the awkward Arina said to Kasuga Ken when she approached him.
"Well -- well, who is this young lady right now? Extremely famous and beautiful, not to mention extraordinarily talented," winked Kasuga, which made Arina lose all her consciousness of the surrounding. "If I ever have to pick one person to be with for the rest of my life, it'd certainly be someone who is good at survival skills. Someone who can sing beautifully to brighten my mood every day, oh! Look who is this?"
Kasuga let out a playful chuckle whilst placing a hand on his chin pretending to think over. Arina's eyes glistened; this was their first encounter and she had already made a good impression on him? And hearing his response only made Arina more nervous than ever as she quickly turned away from him to fan herself from the heat of her face using her hands.
Kasuga Ken was a fine young man in his eighteen. His hair was a handsome color of auburn and was naturally wavy that reached his ears. His face was holy was how Arina defined it. Kasuga looked as though he was one of the greek gods. And on top of that, his elegant fashion sense was something really good to see combined with that holy face as it drove Arina to sigh dreamily whenever she imagined her future with him. (A/n: just think of him as the Asian version of Björn appearance-wise, okay?)
"That-that is hair styling gel," reminded Kasuga when he saw Arina pick it up and intended to drink it.
"Oh!" she laughed awkwardly, "I-uh--"
"There's no table there," confirmed Kasuga wide-eyed. Arina put her hand on the nonexistent table and fell down before him.
Feeling as if she had ruined her whole persona, Arina immediately sprang up to her feet and blew some strands of hair that got to her face and again laughed awkwardly.
"I'm just gonna go -- uh...I'm just gonna go catch some fish."
"...We're about to perform," said Kasuga whilst wincing this time.
"Right. Yes -- Yes we are," replied Arina in a panic. "I'm just gonna go, uh -- draw my eyebrows then."
"You already did," he answered, making Arina awkwardly laugh louder.
"I just can't catch a break!" she exclaimed mournfully.
After the concert was over and met up with their fans, Arina went home with the Big Five and the first thing she did was tossed her handbag to the side and drew herself onto the couch, hugging the pillow and whimpering in mortification.
"What's up?" asked Seo, brutely sitting his butt down on Arina's feet even though there were still spaces on the couch for him.
"Oh, what's up with me?" sobbed Arina dramatically. "I think I'm IN LOVE!"
That sentence immediately drew all the boys' attention to her. Teppei who was drinking a glass of water almost spit it out.
Ren, on the other hand, enthusiastically approached Arina and asked her to spill it all out.
For a while, they learned she had a crush on Kasuga Ken, and her disappointment upon their awful first encounter. It was odd since Arina had always been charming in her words and body language, but when she had to face her crush, all of those traits just chose to evaporate.
"I think I might pretty much be a pick-me-girl," sighed Arina in all honesty, propping her chin on her hands. "Within the speed of light, I've already imagined myself to be not like the other girls and that he'll have to pay special attention to me because I'm rather the one who pays no mind to him at all unlike other girls, BUT I was losing to my nervousness and failed to act upon it. Isn't it mean to have that kind of thought? Although I think it's natural for girls to crave attention and to be different as opposed to boys, do you suppose? We are just biologically wired that way."
While the boys were listening and responding to Arina gingerly, Asano was the only one who didn't care as he took a bath and retreated to his room. He was too busy texting with Lilliana to mind about some crushes of a hopeless romantic simply because it was too predictable anyway.
He texted Lilliana to discuss their money investment and such. Sometimes he would ask how her life was and was incredibly interested in getting to know her. And not to mention, bragging about his daily accomplishments as well.
"Oh, Asano-kun! What'd you like for dinner?" Arina barged into his room without knocking for consent first as he quickly scolded her for doing so.
"Next time, remember to knock! That's a basic manner," was what Asano said.
Eventually, he and Arina walked to the nearest supermarket to buy the ingredients for their meal. Arina insisted that she didn't need a to-buy-list as her nature screamed 'whatever comes — comes!', though she got forced by Asano to actually sit down and plan the meal ahead first.
"Indian food would be nice. A little change once in a while is necessary, don't you think?"
"I don't think we would be able to find all the correct ingredients in a regular supermarket," commented Asano.
"Oh, Asano-kun, that's when there's room for imagination and you will have to improvise from that, but, oh!" Arina clasped her hands in excitement. "How about Chinese food? I reckon I could challenge myself to spicy food today."
"No," said Asano.
Eventually, they settled down with Ganmodoki, Tokoroten, potato miso soup, and Tokoroten salad as a side dish together with the approval of everyone. When arriving at the supermarket, Arina seemingly forgot about the to-buy list and headed in for such unnecessary things.
"Asano-kun! Asano-kun! Boba!" exclaimed Arina in delight, showing Asano the pack of instant boba. "Oh -- can we?"
"No!" replied Asano sternly, wincing. "We have a fixed budget."
"Well, but I suppose we have a lot of money."
"Don't be so reckless," he said, walking past her to find the correct ingredients for their meal. "It's all about financial management. If you spend your money wisely then you would only gain it, otherwise, it's the other way around. Download Microsoft Excel when we get home, I'll teach you how to divide your budgets."
For the heedless Arina, everything Asano taught her was very valuable. Later in life, she constantly found herself applying Asano's method and was extremely grateful for it as it had saved her life many times. He also managed to teach her about all kinds of investments and such.
They got home from the supermarket and Arina wore her apron and prepared to cook the boys dinner.
"I've been trying to turn on the stove, but for some reason, the fire kept dying out," complained Seo.
"Oh, is that so?" said Arina. She came to check on the gas stove and proceeded to fix it by turning it on multiple times. The problem was that every time she did so, the fire that came out from the stove rose at least a meter in the air, causing the boys to startle in anxiety and told her to quit it.
"Ho-how reckless," commented Ren anxiously, hoping that she won't get roasted alive if kept doing so.
Even Asano jumped in and said he'd call the host on this issue. But guess what? Arina's recklessness was actually helpful. She managed to fix the gas stove and began to cook on it.
The boys sighed in relief and went back to their normal activities. Ren was grooming himself in the bathroom, Teppei was watching the news on TV, Koyama was flipping through his flashcard, Seo went to take a shower, and Asano was sitting near where Arina was cooking and working on his laptop. Sometimes he would get up and go check on Arina. There was also another fact about him -- the sight of a womanly girl who cooks food for him gave him some sort of sensation. Yin and yang, that's it -- divine masculinity is often attracted to divine feminity. And what a coincidence that Arina's father made her who she was today.
Not only did she cook, but after she called the boys to the table with a magnificent meal and finished it, Arina voluntarily stood up to clean the table and wash the dishes, which, had Asano scored her high on this. In his eyes, she was the perfect girl if not for her recklessness and illogical way of thinking. (A/n: he's so cavemen-like I know)
"Mind if I help you, Arina?" offered Teppei.
"I don't think you should!" said Arina wide-eyed, completely brainwashed by her father. "This is a girl's job, Teppei. It's improper for you to ask so."
After dinner, they went on to play cards leaving Arina to clean the kitchen as she wished. Asano, however, had no interest in joining them as he continued to work on his laptop near where Arina was washing the dishes.
He was waiting for her to finish so he could teach her about financial management as he promised. During then, he kept thinking about her real identity and all the mystery recently. From why she was here in Japan in the first place, to the bus accident when she got to flex unexpected knowledge and skill, to the event of the Hisashi gang, to the recent event of disappearing in the Bali trip.
"Asano-kun, you don't wanna join them?"
Asano snapped back from the muddle of his thought and looked up to see Arina who had finished her house chore.
"Get your laptop here and take a sit, I'm gonna teach you about finance," he said.
"So there are two categories: necessary budget and unnecessary budget. So here in the necessary category we have fixed expenses such as rent, electricity--" He told Arina whilst typing on Excel as an example for her. "And remember that you should at least carve out twenty percent per month of your asset to investment. Then in ten years, it will add up to a big amount. Also, remember to have a saving per month for emergency cases."
At that time Arina might not feel like owing Asano that much. But when she had grown up and looked back, she wanted to repay Asano for everything he had taught her.
She thanked him wholeheartedly and wanted to go join the boys' game but unfortunately, Asano kept holding her back and opted to teach her further about investing in cryptocurrency.
"Asano-kun, can we leave it for tomorrow? Haven't you had fun sometimes?"
Asano was speechless. What did she mean? Planning and investing money was extremely FUN for him. And he willingly spent time teaching her about it. It showed that he cared for her a lot deep down. He even ignored several texts from Lilliana just to focus on teaching Arina for the sake of her future. Although it seemed to him that she didn't care one bit for his effort, as it drove Asano quite mad after hearing that sentence.
"Go. Do whatever you like," he merely said, closing his eyes to ease his anger and folding his arms.
"Dear Asano-kun! let's spend time together shall we?" suggested Arina brightly, grabbing one of Asano's hands as he startled and led him to where the boys were playing -- the sofa area.
"Boys! May we join you?" she asked them. "Asano-kun will be joining this time too!"
"Really!?" Asano's minions exclaimed in enthusiasm altogether. At last their leader had finally agreed to hang out with them like this. But it was odd that he looked rather irritated, and it was obvious that Arina forced him to. Nevertheless, it was something worth celebrating.
Asano Gakushuu wasn't a fan of games that served entertainment purposes as he saw no meaning and thought of them as a waste of time. However, when he had to play them, he will be extremely competitive and poured a hundred percent energy into the game in order to win at all costs.
And that resulted in everyone kept losing to him in every single match. Eventually, they grew tired of him and opted to play something else. 'Charades' as Seo suggested. They each wrote three separate prompts on three separate pieces of paper and put them all in a bowl and muddled them up. They broke into two groups and Koyama was the first one to pick a prompt and act on what it said.
'Belly dance' was what he got. Koyama went from 'nishishishi' to petrify. Sh-should he do this?
But he had no choice after seeing his teammates, Arina and Teppei staring at him with hopes of beating Asano gleaming in their eyes. Koyama gave in and tucked his butt, lifted his arms in the air, flexed his stomach, and began to shimmy his hi--
"MASSAGE CHAIR!" shouted Arina confidently, jumping from her seat. Unfortunately she was wrong.
"Dancing!" said Teppei quickly. He was also wrong.
"Disgust triggerment!!" Seo exclaimed. His guess was wrong too.
"Sexiness~" chirped Ren, flipping his newly combed hair. Well...it was odd to say that Koyama was sexy.
Asano furrowed his eyebrows at how stupid his minions were.
"Belly dance," he said calmly, folding his arms. And it was the correct answer which gave his team one point.
Seo was up on the next turn with a prompt saying 'French Kiss <3'. At first glance, he already knew who wrote this prompt. It was undoubtedly Ren as Seo leered at him for making him do this.
He started to kiss the air and pointed at his tongue. Arina, as always, was the quickest to give a guess.
"MY SWEETS!" she exclaimed. Although Arina was always the quickest, she was also the one to always fail at guessing.
Before Ren could recognize his own prompt, Asano was faster than him and answered straight away, "French kiss."
Seo happily went back to his team and gave Asano a high-five. The other team stared at them in disbelief.
"The tip to win this game more easily is to guess what others wrote as their prompts," advised Asano.
It was Arina's turn as she leaped to her feet excitedly and went to pick a prompt.
'The cute Maltese dog I saw at a cafe one Sunday morning' was what she got. It was HER prompt after all as Arina squealed in delight. Little did she know, Asano had picked up on this.
The first movement with her arms in the air and Asano already said:
"The cute Maltese dog you saw at a cafe on that Sunday morning."
Arina's jaw dropped and froze in one place.
'WHAT THE HELL!?' they all thought.
"It's UNFAIR!" whined Arina fumingly, stamping her foot. "You cheated, don't you!?"
"You are just extremely easy to read. Okay, my turn."
Asano's prompt was 'Up' as he winced, disapproving of its simplicity.
"House!" as many said when they saw him forming the shape of it with his hands, then proceeded to join his index fingers together.
"Together!" they guessed, but he continued to act with completely different gestures.
"Blooming!"
"Tragedy!"
"Giraffe!"
"Bubbles!"
"Love!"
"Washing machine!"
"My future with Kasuga Ken!"
"Everyone, it's 'UP'!" Asano blurted out resignedly, unable to stand how these minions were that stupid.
However, they formed a sort of expression that screamed 'What!?' at him.
"Didn't it occur to you to just go--" said Seo as he pointed upward.
"Then that would be too easy! It wouldn't be a challenge anymore," reasoned Asano. The rest almost fainted hearing so.
Teppei was next. He picked a prompt and stared at it for seconds.
'Nihilism' was the prompt Teppei had which caused him to sweat drop, unsure how to demonstrate it through body language. And it was quite obvious that Asano was the one that wrote it.
And what happened when Asano's prompt was acted out before him even though it was vague? He still got it right in the first guess.
The result was one point for Arina's team and four for Asano's. And henceforth they had learned to either stay away from Asano or be on his team whether it comes to any aspect of life.
Craving some bonding time, Arina suggested they have a late-night conversation. Asano immediately declined but gave in as soon as he saw her puppy eyes. It didn't work at all before, but why nowadays...strange!
"Oh, guys, you must help me out!" begged Arina in desperation. "It's such a peculiar feeling to have. An addicting feeling is a right word for it. When the thing caused you to release too many dopamines you are constantly haunted by it. Well, I" -- she let out a dreamy sigh, whilst propping a hand on her cheek -- "I'm experiencing what they say having butterflies in their stomachs is like right now. Oh! Should I go start a love diary from tomorrow?"
Ren fully supported Arina's idea. Teppei and Koyama were neutral about it and Seo was teasing her. Asano, though, was entirely negative about it.
"Quit it. These types of feelings are totally unnecessary for your growth and your state in life. And the diary thing is rubbish."
Arina heaved another deep sigh as she sat up straight and reached out to the nearby jugful of Peace Lily and kissed its leaf. The boys stared at her as if she was some strange creature.
"You look so much like Valentina to me. Oh, how I miss her," she said with a bubbly attitude. "Such a romantic name I gave her indeed. Oh, Asano-kun, I have such a romantic soul. Life isn't worth living if there isn't any romance."
"What a load of absurd!" reprimanded Asano. Ren, on the other hand, nodded repeatedly at what Arina just said.
"Pfft, but you are lucky to be a girl anyway," Seo joined in, looking sulky. "Us boys carry the stress to be better than our parents in the future. While you can just go marry a fine guy. And it isn't gonna be difficult for you since you already have the looks."
Arina snapped back from daydreaming at this with her eyes opened wide.
"The stress to be better than your parents? Oh, why?"
Asano silently turned away to avoid any eye contact and unnecessary questions about his relationship with his father. Seo and Teppei then further explained to Arina that society and their parents generally expected the next generation to achieve and contribute more to the nation.
"Why, that's unfair," said Arina mournfully. "I do believe in the end it's best if anyone can do whatever they want and follow their passions."
After declaring so, she had moments of reflecting on herself. What was her main passion by the way? When you have too many passions, it's difficult to pick the biggest one out of them. She certainly had many moments of daydreaming about replacing her father's position, but always set them aside since she knew it was impossible for a girl to do so. Was this an injustice too that the belief of 'it's best if anyone can do whatever they want and follow their passions' was never considered a thing in this case?
It wasn't until half past eleven that they retreated to their rooms. Before going to sleep, Arina wrote her diary and emphasized the conversation she had with the boys earlier -- the conversation which caused her to open her eyes to a few new things. From there on she contemplated her biggest passion and made a decision. A decision to overthrow her father in the future. Despite it being nearly impossible and against all the rules, Arina didn't care as she ought to achieve it someday.
However, that night was as though it was her father pouring his anger and disappointment down on his daughter's head. The next morning she woke up with tears spilling forth and proceeded to hop out of bed, fled outside, and told the guys what happened.
"Yesterday I dreamed of something I wish I will never dream of it ever again! It wasn't lovely one bit, why can't I always dream of lovely things every night? I dreamed that my Father killed me and I was dead and nobody -- nobody even none of you care enough to attend my funeral. Oh, it was such a tragic thing, and I keep tearing up whenever I think about it. And the worst thing is it keeps sticking around in my head and there's no way out."
