27: You're Worthy of Love
Hisashi's hand trembled, aiming at the cupcake sitting on his little sister's head, whilst she was shutting her eyes in fear.
"HURRY UP!"
"Hisashi! I thought you declared yourself as supreme compared to Big Sis!"
Gritting his teeth in fury as sweat rolled down his face, Hisashi's index finger brushed against the trigger...and pulled it.
'BANG!'
Missed.
Natsumi slowly opened her watering eyes. Apparently, the bullet had missed the cupcakes by ten centimeters upper, hitting the wall behind instead.
Hisashi then received a harsh 'boo!' from Arina's supporters. He immediately felt grated by them and darted his full of hatred eyes toward the little girl who was stretching her fingers before shooting.
"It's alright, Hisashi! It's a happy accident!"
She got into her position and instantly pulled the trigger as though she didn't even have to aim. Natsumi shut her eyes in fear again.
'BANG!'
Hit.
The cupcake took the bullet and exploded into small pieces, as Butaro swiftly placed a new one on Natsumi's head.
In an instant, the gang broke into loud applause, marveling at the so-called Big Sis's professional skill as she claimed.
"Wow! NOW I understand!" a Hisashi gang member gaped with his hand on his forehead.
"There you go! That's our Big Sis!" Shinya proudly said.
Meanwhile, Ryuuki was standing there with a sulky face.
Arina tossed her silvery blonde hair, as she moved out of the way since it was Hisashi's turn.
"Good luck!" she told him, to which the guy felt even more pressure.
"Big bro..." Natsumi finally teared up, eyeing her brother in despair and anxiety. Her entire body trembled.
"Natsumi..." murmured Hisashi in guilt, and formed a weak smile.
"Trust me."
Natsumi was determined to trust and not shutting her eyes now.
Hisashi took a deep breath in, as he relaxed his muscle.
'BANG!'
Missed.
At least the bullet was five centimeters closer to the target now. However, he still received harsh boos from the crowd nevertheless. The only exception was some of his loyal underlings.
Arina got into her position, and this time it was no different. Perfect.
'BANG!'
Hit.
Ryuuki started to feel the guilt build up within him.
"Wow! Hisashi you SUCK!" some said.
"Big Sis is undoubtedly worthy of being our Big Sis!"
"Big Sis BEST gun shooter!"
"Pfft! I bet she's just lucky!" a loyal Hisashi supporter scoffed.
But it clearly wasn't due to luck. For the next and next rounds, it all resulted in the same thing.
Missed.
Hit.
Missed.
Hit.
Hisashi had never felt so ashamed in his life before. Why hadn't he just hit one for once? Why did that little girl make it so easy? Even his sister felt more relief when she saw it was her turn as opposed to his.
"Don't worry about your capability, Hisashi. You're battling with a natural prodigy, and I had plenty of training before you -- that's why," Arina flickered a smile at him. But he thought she was sneering at him, which, made his blood boil even more.
"It's like being in the mid of the academic prodigies," sighed Arina, "That's why I feel you, Hisashi. I don't fancy this feeling either."
'THAT'S IT!" bellowed Hisashi, as he angrily marched into his position. "I'm going full mode serious now!"
The gang laughed at Hisashi, which even further fueled the flame within him.
His sister was looking more anxious than usual. She sensed that something was off about her brother this time.
Hisashi spent a little more time than usual aiming. And when he has chosen the perfect aim shot and was about to pull the trigger, Arina had her eyes shot wide open as she quickly yelled:
"DO NOT SHOOT, HISASHI!"
'BANG!'
The shot rang in their ears nevertheless.
Hit.
It hit Natsumi's left ear.
Hisashi's face blanched, petrified...dropping the pistol.
A piercing loud cry echoed through the entire building, all of which was from Natsumi. She couldn't bare the inflicting pain as she fell to her knees and a hand of hers reached the bleeding ear, which was partially destroyed.
The crowd fell into a dead silence. The people who were watching the stream all suddenly realized this was not an act and frantically called the cops. All of which was supposed to be Arina's plan.
But this Arina often failed for being overwhelmed by emotions, unlike her past self. While the other one was perfect for these types of these situations, this main personality wasn't.
"Why don't you show up!?' Arina beat her chest rapidly, desperately calling her other self out. But it was useless, as Arina had to try so hard to resist the urge to rush to Natsumi, tears forming in her eyes. She signaled Goku to end the live stream.
"NA-NATSUMI!" shrieked Hisashi, tears also forming in his red eyes as he ran toward his crying little sister and pulled her into an embrace.
"It-It hurts! Big bro!" she sobs, burying her face into her big bro's chest. "It hurts, it hurts, it hurts, IT HURTS!"
"Now you understand, right...?"
Arina drew all the attention to herself, as she proceeded to speak with teardrops rolling down her cold cheeks, "You realize it now, DON'T YOU!? Plenty of people out there have suffered the same pain you're enduring, which you inflicted on them!! WHY on earth would you purchase guns to hurt people? To threaten them with it!?"
Bearing Arina's words, Ryuuki couldn't handle it as he exploded, tears streaming down his scarred face, "SHUT UP! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO WON'T UNDERSTAND!"
Arina's saddened set of eyes shifted to Ryuuki, as though she was trying to read his inner world.
"Why, Ryuuki? Oh, WHY WON'T I UNDERSTAND?"
"Why?" Ryuuki got a hold of his face and laughed in despair. Others were watching the scene whilst conflicting emotions were stirring in them.
"Why? BECAUSE YOU'RE PERFECT! You are born with a perfect appearance! You are born with the privilege! YOU'RE LOVED BY PEOPLE! Then HOW can you understand us? The people who are cast away by society!?"
"Ryuuki..." said Arina in a struggle for the lump within her throat, shaking her head in denial as tears kept streaming down her face empathetically. She immediately marched toward Ryuuki to pull him into a hug when he returned her by stealing her pistol by force and aiming at her face.
"I HATE PEOPLE LIKE YOU THE MOST! VANISH OUT OF MY SIGHT -- ALL OF YOU!"
"RYUUKI!" shrieked Goku, along with the other gang members as they tried to yank the pistol back but Ryuuki was too desperate that began to pull the trigger everywhere in a frantic. Though, despite so, Arina didn't move an inch.
"RYUUKI! I'm sorry for not understand you! Will you FORGIVE me?" she cried, clinging to Ryuuki in determination despite the chaos between the frantic guy and his comrades.
As things couldn't get any worse, neither of them noticed that a petrol can existed in the building and had been shot this afternoon during the fight between Hisashi's gang and Arina's comrades, which caused the liquid to leak, pouring on the floor.
And in the mid of the chaos, Ryuuki uncontrollably shot bullets everywhere, some hit the floor, some hit the roof, some hit several members, some hit the wall and created sparks...and the sparks accidentally caught on the petrol liquid on the floor, resulting in...
Fire.
At night, the abandoned building was burned down. The fire caught on debris and wallpapers and was resulting in a bigger fire.
Only a small portion of people was still trapped inside the building, most already got out.
When Arina opened her eyes, the first thing she did was cough at the excessive amount of smoke she was inhaling.
"Big Sis, you're alright!" Shinya and Butaro shouted simultaneously, whilst Arina regained her consciousness and gasped at the horror scene before her.
"THE OTHERS! WHERE ARE THEY!?" shrieked Arina in fright, scanning around the area as she was relieved to see almost the rest.
"Ryuuki!" Arina suddenly jumped in alarm.
"WHERE IS RYUUKI!?" she clutched Shinya's shoulders and began to shake him frantically.
"He's--He's still inside!" responded Shinya, gasping.
"AND HISASHI, NATSUMI? STILL IN THERE?" asked Arina, surveying back and forth.
"Yea--"
But Arina didn't need to hear any longer. She seized the napkin in her pocket and held it on her nose then abruptly sprang up to her feet and fled inside the burning building.
"ARE YOU CRAZY, BIG SIS!?" they shouted at her.
Entering the building, Arina was first blinded by the smoke. Then the heat forced her to her hands and knees, crawling and searching, whilst covering her nostril with the napkin to keep the smoke out. As she crawled along the walls, she kept reaching out for touchable objects laying around and throwing them into the places.
When the object suddenly hit something -- a body or so, Arina's heart beat faster in excitement as she immediately crawled to them, hoping it was indeed someone.
Turned out, it was Hisashi and his beloved little sister, and so fortunate that they were still alive! Hisashi was trying to protect her but the two were crushed by the collapsed roof.
"Hisashi! Natsumi!" yelled Arina in happiness but was quickly followed by an unstoppable coughing.
She deftly removed the fallen roof from the sibling. It was difficult as it kept burning her palms but Arina was gritting her teeth whilst tearing up, enduring the pain with her mind firm and determined.
"I'm--I'm okay..." coughed Hisashi. "Save my little sis first..."
And for the next minutes, the gang saw Arina come back from the burning building with the blacked-out Natsumi and laid her down.
"Take- *coughed* take care of her, alright? And don't follow me into the fire. I got this," her voice was hoarse from dehydration as she told the gang before bravely reentering the building.
"Big Sis..." some bawled their eyes out witnessing how much of a kind soul their leader was.
Eventually, Arina returned with Hisashi on her shoulders and laid him down next to Natsumi.
"His-his arm and legs are broken--" coughed Arina intensely, and it went on for a while, clutching her chest.
"We-we got it, Big Sis!" they said, but this time with the Hisashi gang members included.
Without thinking, Arina stood up and reentered the burning building for the third time.
This time, it was Ryuuki that still hadn't been found.
"RYUUKI!" Arina desperately shouted. "RYU--" and she coughed again and again.
Of course, Ryuuki has heard her from that distance...though, he didn't want to be saved...
Pieces of fallen wood from the roof had also crushed him, mainly his legs, as he could barely feel them anymore...they had become numb...
Chuckling at his state, he could see his entire life flash in front of him before he dies.
***
Growing up he had always been an ugly boy. Takeuchi Ryuuki; he failed at almost everything. From grades, from popularity, from being loved by his father. Even though he hated his father – the man who constantly beat him up for personal entertainment, he wholeheartedly loved his mother.
The only one in the world who showed him love – dear mother. She was a kind soul, and her smile brightened up his gloomy days.
"Remember, Ryuuki. To be forgiving and kind-hearted to everyone is a must trait. You will receive love in return someday if you follow what I said," said Ryuuki's mother to her six-year-old son, while they were holding hands, walking back home in the sunset.
"I tried..." sobbed the boy. "I tried...but everyone keeps bullying me. Mom...I feel like everyone is taking advantage of my kindness..."
"You didn't try hard enough," was merely his mother's reply, looking away to the sunset.
Little Ryuuki listened to his mother and tried harder, though it resulted in way worse.
At school, the popular girls kept making fun of him for being an outcast, and so was the boys.
"Why do you even come to school? I told you that we no longer want to see your face! So why do you even show up!?"
Both girls and boys teamed up, tying his wrists and feet by a jump rope, and proceeded to kick him in the gut and all over his aching body. Stamp, stamp, stamp! Along with their psychotic laughter.
When he got home, he always knew that his father will be waiting to beat him up as a way to relieve his stress. He always used fists, sticks, or sometimes a showerhead, and Ryuuki had always preferred sticks since it was the least painful.
Nonetheless, he never gave up on being kind to everyone as his mother taught him. Despite being beaten up daily at school, he still offered to help his bullies, and obviously, they took advantage of him and exploited his kindness.
"No, I changed my mind. I want orange juice now, so this could go to waste," a popular girl said, splashing the cup of lemon juice on Ryuuki's face, and opening his mouth by force as she shoved the paper cup into it.
At home, while having dinner, his father complained about having a rough day. He was worried and tried to comfort him, though his father thought he was pitying him.
"How DARE you pity your own father!!" he snapped, stabbing a knife into his son's hand, as he shrieked and was slapped by his father for disturbing the dinner.
There was something Ryuuki had always failed to understand. Why did his mother love his father so much? When his father eventually parted away in a car crash, his mother was too devastated to the point that she fell ill, the whole day only laying in bed as she lacked the strength to keep fighting life, fighting for her son.
Now Ryuuki had another burden in life, it was to take care of his ill mother. She'd never leave her to take care of herself. On top of that, their family suffered from poverty.
Clutching his mother's hand in his, Ryuuki murmured in tears, "Hang in there, mom. We're gonna get through this..."
And so, he started out stealing, but eventually, he soon found happiness in seeing others suffer. It was as if he finally found justice. The society that had cast him asides since he was young, the whole world turned its back on him. But he didn't need them. He would rather make them suffer than make them love him. In addition, he searched for people who had the same circumstances as him and pulled them out of the dark, saving their souls.
"We're the Evangelists of Ruin!" Ryuuki announced to his gang members, as they cheered in joy. It wasn't until the day they met a particular girl.
Her name was Arina Avenira, a pretty young girl who came from a fearful superpowered nation. At first, she appeared to be rather normal, but she wasn't, at all. They were all taken aback by this young girl's combat skill, she was extremely flexible, nimble, and agile, and used them to her full advantage.
When Ryuuki first heard about her father being a wealthy businessman in her nation, some hope sparked within him, as he reluctantly called her his leader. However, he soon discovered her true motive. She was there to ruin the gang's career. And everyone in his gang had gradually been charmed by this girl and followed her like blinded dogs, to the point they didn't recognize what they were doing anymore.
What were they called Evangelists of Ruin for? For what? They didn't bother to scam money or steal them anymore. And Ryuuki was left devastated more than ever. His mother...how was he supposed to provide for her?
The opportunity came when his gang met up with the Hisashi gang one day. Hisashi told them he will need time to reflect on wanting to annex with their gang or not. And one day, when he was having a fight with his comrades about Arina, he sulked and wandered the Tokyo street on his own. There he bumped into a young lady – Minamoto Natsumi, though at that point he had no idea who she was. She seduced him and took him into a karaoke bar, and later secretly drop a sleeping pill into his cocktail. Eventually, the entire Hisashi gang showed up and kidnapped him.
When Ryuuki regained consciousness, Natsumi introduced herself as her brother showed up and offered his gang to join him instead, since Ryuuki's gang under Arina's name now was twice in size compared to his.
Of course, when Ryuuki saw the guns and the money offered to join, the image of his mother flashed before him, and he gladly accepted the invitation straight away. But why did it have to come to this...?
***
"Mom..." he muttered, tears spilling forth but they quickly vaporized.
"Mom..." he spoke again, breathing heavily. "You...don't love me...you're never there for me..."
Whatever came of out her mouth was nothing but a lie...to try and love people...didn't work for everyone...and to try and love the wrong people...was the biggest mistake one could make.
"Mom...I hate you," sobbed Ryuuki, coughing from the smoke, "Why—why did you give up on me?"
"RYUUKI!"
Ryuuki quickly snapped back, looking up to see Arina. Some parts of her skin had been burned, and she was tearing up, possibly from the pain, as she worked abruptly to remove the fallen wood which was crushing his body.
"Ryuuki!" she said and pulled him into a hug as soon as she freed him from the burning wood on top of him. "It's okay now. Let's return to safety."
She stroked his head as Ryuuki felt his tears duplicate themselves and spill forth more than ever.
However, things turned worse when another part of the roof again collapsed and fell on them. Though, Ryuuki wasn't feeling any pain now...he could still feel the warmness of Arina's arms wrapping around him.
"You don't have to love anyone, Ryuuki," faltered Arina, gritting her teeth at the burning of her skin and flesh. Ryuuki could feel her tears drop on his cheeks. "Everyone is different, though I know for a fact that you need to be loved."
With that said, Ryuuki burst into a loud cry. It has been so long since he had cried this loud.
Continued to embrace him, Arina patted his head, "You're loved now, but when you weren't, it didn't mean you weren't worthy of it. I love you, Ryuuki. Think of me as your big sister. I will always be there for you until I draw my last breath."
Ryuuki cried, and cried, so was Arina. She accepted their fate and closed her eyes shut, preparing to be burned alive, whilst still embracing Ryuuki tight in her arms, sheltering him.
Fortunately, the firefighters and cops arrived. They barged into the burning building and rescued both of them out, and were surprised to see how a high schooler refused to let go of a middle schooler as though a child refused to let go of his momma on his first day at school when they tried to separate them to bring them to the hospital.
This story became breaking news. Arina's name again went viral. 'An unfortunate victim who turned into a psychopath, and at the end of the day, a hero' was all Arina heard from the public. The Hisashi gang was sentenced to jail for illegally owning guns and for committing crimes, and her comrade brothers were sent to the youth detention center, including Ryuuki. And his mother was sent to the woman's shelter.
For Arina's part? That live stream went viral. Teppei was the first one in school to watch it as he showed it around to everyone. Instead of fearing Arina for her crazy gunfight idea and her shooting skill (which was odd for a little girl), she became an idol in everyone's eyes for overcoming rapists and rescuing people out of a burning building (though this part was unrecorded).
"Oh my god, Arina! You're a genius!"
"You should teach me how to use guns sometimes!"
"You're so brave!"
"Do they teach you how to use guns in Orlas?"
Of course Arina had to reply yes, and everyone believed her, except for one -- Asano Gakushuu. He furrowed his eyebrows, watching the live stream and scanning through the news, why did she become even more suspicious after this event? And why did some thugs called her their Big Sis?
