24: Return to Daily Life

The shocking news soon spread throughout Japan like a contagious germ. The mass media referred to Asano and Arina as miraculous survivors. They then sent Asano to the hospital to treat his broken arm. The rescue team continued with their research and found the remaining dead bodies of students and a teacher.

Maeda, Kibe, and Mr. Inoue had died from an illness. The cause was the skin disease Miyake had developed. As a result, they developed acute visceral diseases from eating toxic soups.

Asano had to ask Teppei's dad for help and go to the public to clarify the story in case they accuse them of murder and cannibalism since they were various articles about deciphering tattered bodies at the scene.

Kunugigaoka school received negative feedback from the public for handling the accident poorly. Parents of deceased students moaned and threatened to sue the school. However, chairman Asano took care of them all through false propaganda.

And the worst of all, Arina's name had gone public. Now she was famous throughout entire Japan. Just one time she recklessly forgot her Father's warning and slipped her real name and the result came into this? The Kunugigaoka Science Lab called her and demanded an answer to her faking her profile and Arina resignedly had to give up her internship. On top of that, she expected her Father to become so enraged that he'd command her to pack her stuff and go back to her grey and gloomy country -- where there was no room for sparks of vivid imagination at all. However, to her surprise, for some mysterious reason, her Father told her, 'it's okay. Just stay there. Everything will go as I planned.'

Of being overly ecstatic, Arina mistook her Father's evil laugh at the end of his sentence as a cheerful one and laughed along.

Arina wasn't the only one that had to deal with her Father, Asano had to, too. Although the moment he returned home, his character again become glamorized and got rid of his pathetic self. He remained composed thinking about how his father will treat him after resolving the public problems.

One morning after days of students gossiping about the news and Arina ran around the school telling them about her view of the horrid experience and showing them her novels, to which Asano freaked out and confiscated them, the chairman then summoned the entire school to an assembly in the gymnasium.

During the assembly, chairman Asano raised his voice in the memoirs of the deceased students. From where he stood, friends of the deceased ones could be spotted. They were bawling their eyes out and all hung their heads low, sniffing. Since Maeda Maki was now gone and so was Enoki Osuke, the Anti-Maeda Party officially disintegrated. Arina couldn't help but shamelessly cry too, while Asano was trying his best to maintain his composure, gritting his teeth in grief.

Finally, when everyone thought the assembly was over, the chairman then surprised them by asking Asano to come to the stage.

"Asano-kun, would you come to the stage?" he asked. A fake smile was plastered on his face.

Knowing what was going on, Arina looked over to Asano in concern. Sweat rolled down his cheek, as he took a deep breath in and squared his shoulders. Asano proceed to went on the stage in desperate courage and faced his father eye to eye.

"You failed as a leader," was the first thing that came out of his father's mouth.

He publicly humiliated his son.

All the gazes drew to Asano Gakushuu, who was hanging his head low, clenching his fist and withstanding all the humiliation. Arina clasped her forehead in unfathomableness.

"Your decision led everyone to chaos. You could've just moved out of that place right after three days when you see help is unreachable. The rate of survival would be higher," the chairman's eyes flashed sharply, "I'll have you tell me how you intend to take responsibility for this, Asano-kun. You don't deserve to be considered a strong leader."

With that being said, the students gaped in shock while Arina's face burned with rage. She pushed everyone asides and proceeded to climb up the stage with no invitation whatsoever, causing everyone to whisper among each other.

"What are you doing, Arina!?" yelled Teppei, who was standing behind the stage and got his micro 'borrowed' by force from the outraged Arina.

Eyeing the daughter of Alexei Avenir, the chairman wondered what she might do as Asano freaked out and demanded she go back to where she was.

Arina tapped the micro to see if it was turned on and smiled brightly, dropping her earlier fuming image.

"My, my! What a brilliant view! I could see nearly everyone's face standing from here. Oh, hello there, Fueguchi-kun! (a guy whose family ran an ice cream business. He gets paranoid whenever he sees Arina) Why would you hide from me all the time?" Arina waved her hand comprehensively at him while the guy was covering his face in shame.

"So lovely people! I have a question for you! Our student council president right here had devoted himself to being a leader during a harsh circumstance. I agreed that his decision might not be the best, but nevertheless! He sacrificed everything he could for his dear comrades" -- Arina placed a hand on her heart as Asano couldn't help but cringed -- "I don't see why someone like this should be punished. In fact, I FIRMLY believe he shouldn't be taking any responsibility for this. I suppose you all could close your eyes and imagine yourselves in his shoes. I dare you to come up with anything good in those horrid circumstances. Just recalling them made me goosebump, see? Oh, sorry! it's quite hard to see it from this distance. And Asano-kun's just like any of us. He isn't a godly leader or anything. So please, cease your high expectations and sympathize with him for once. Finally, my question is--"

Arina paused to take a deep breath in and released all at once, "DO YOU THINK ASANO-KUN SHOULD TAKE ALL THE BLAMES HERE?"

The students exchanged looks for a split second and together, they faced forward and shouted unanimously.

"NO!"

Arina pretended to not hear it whilst placing a hand behind her ear. She pointed the micro at the crowd and said, "Hm? LOUDER!"

"NOO!" they shouted at the top of their lungs. Mostly it was Asano's fangirls that were heard.

"Alright! We have our answer then," beamed Arina delightfully, turning to chairman Asano.

The man was giving the girl a piercing death stare. That was a wise move from her, as he cared about his public image as much as his son does. And now when the public had turned their backs on him and demanded he forgives his son, he couldn't force his son to take all the responsibilities, right? His students will likely lose their respect for him.

Feeling as though the table had turned and he was the one being humiliated, the chairman forced a smile and proceeded to speak on the microphone, "The assembly is over. Everyone might return to their class."

When passing the daughter of the infamous dictator, the chairman leered at her whilst Arina gave him a cheerful smile in return.

"Chairman Asano!" she called after him. "I suppose I could imagine that deep inside, you care about Asano-kun a lot!"

With that said, the chairman whirled around, half facing the young girl waving at him.

"It's just that in your own way!" added Arina merrily.

When the assembly was over and the students began to take their leaves, Arina, along with Teppei and the other Big Fives member came to check on Asano.

It appeared that Asano had been in a daze the whole time listening to the things that were going on. This might be the first time he had beaten his father in something, though, not officially.

Not only the Big Fives and Arina, but more than half the school also approached him to cheer him up.

"How could any father blame his son for these things!? It's utterly ridiculous!" one said.

"Yeah, I know right!? I'm starting to lose some respect for him," another said.

"No worry, Asano-kun. No matter what thing happens, we will always have your back!" declared Nagasawa Juria.

"You always work hard for us and it has always been perfect. So why it's just one time you show your imperfection that you have to be considered a criminal?" sobbed Kihira Kimi. Kuroda Kaguya and Kato Kokomi also joined in.

The sea of people was trying to shove each other out of their way to speak to Asano and Arina eventually was shoved out of the crowd.

She was the center of attention merely minutes ago, and now she was completely forgotten. But did Arina care about it? No! She thought people finally sympathizing with a godly, unreachable figure like Asano was too much happiness a mere mortal could handle as she burst out laughing happily.

"You see before you a perfectly happy person, Asano-kun," Arina announced, while she and the Big Fives were on their way back to class. "I'm perfectly happy -- yes, more than anything in the world right now. You see that, Asano-kun? Do not ever stress out about the unpredictable future! Let it all to fate to decide your future. Oh, I shall forever be grateful that chairman Asano decided to publicly humiliate you, or else fate will take another turn. Nothing makes me happier than this before -- even when I finally reunited with my eyebrow pencil -- since I've been constantly imagining being in your shoes the whole time after that day hearing you mention your father."

She took a breath in and continued, "I'm so extremely glad that people generally love you more than your father. It's so nice thinking about it during every conflict you have with him. Oh, aren't you too, Asano-kun?"

She whirled around to see that Asano was having the most genuine smile on his face. He looked as happy as she was. And somewhere in his eyes, one could tell that he began to cherish her dearly.

"Of course," answered Asano. His eyes were smiling too this time.

"And you, Arina, you're still as heedless and impulsive as ever," Seo barged in, crossing his arms. "Climbing up the stage and yanking the microphone out of Teppei's hand like that *sighed* You never stop to think -- whatever comes into your head to say or do you say or do it without a moment's reflection."

"Oh, but that's the best of it," protested Arina. "Something just flashes into your mind, so exciting, and you must out with it. If you stop to think it over you spoil it all. Haven't you never felt that yourself, Seo?"

Yes, Seo did. Although he thought he had not and shook his head, acting sagely.

"Well, I mean, it's because of Arina's impulsiveness that brightens up the day, isn't it?" reasoned Ren.

Since they were twenty-eight days late for class, Asano was twice as busy as usual. For Arina, all she cared about was that she missed the basketball tournament for girls.

Although Asano was too busy to the point he reduced his sleep time to three hours a day, he still felt like he owed his life and dignity to Arina, and felt obliged to help her catch up with the rest of the class.

However, one must know that they shouldn't trust whatever thing blabbed out of Arina's mouth completely. She consistently told people to be grateful for things, and so did she herself. Though, being a childish girl as she was, she forgot to be grateful most of the time during Asano's efforts of helping her.

At late noon one Thursday Asano and his minions, including Arina -- who was forced to be there -- were having a study group after school in the library. Arina especially didn't like this new special treatment from Asano, whilst many people would die to be in her position.

"I realize it now. It's not that I'm stupid. It's just that you all are too smart," Arina heaved a deep sigh, eyeing down at the disgusting math equations.

There was one thing the boys didn't understand. Her capability wasn't class-A level at all. So why did the chairman insist on placing her in their class? It was still a mystery until this day.

Nevertheless, Arina was such a people person that she charmed (almost) everyone to love her like how owners love their pets. Now the infamous Asano Gakushuu was also no exception. He saw her as his favorite minion out of the others. Although this minion was quite useless in daily life, he still like its company most.

As a result, even though the boys disapproved of her intellectual capability, they still tried everything they could to keep her in class A, even if it cost them two hours a day to sit with her.

Though the childish Arina didn't quite realize how devoted everyone was to her. She thought those two hours were nothing but torture. Propping her chin on her hands, Arina studied the math equations for several silent minutes.

"I like this," she spoke again, breaking the precious silence. "It's easy. I just have to memorize these and apply the correct ones to each question. I like it when I say it's easy and make up my mind that it is because it surely helps with managing my breathing. See -- whenever I stress out thinking something is too difficult I might struggle to breathe normally."

But Arina immediately forgot every equation she just learned the moment she flipped to the next page. And her breathing rate did turn hectic.

For Arina, the moment the boys got involved with studying, it was as if they were different persons (except for Asano). She didn't like it though, because they had learned the trick to make her stay focused by ignoring whatever non-academic related thing she said.

"Guys! Guys! I think I need to go to the toilet," announced Arina, "I'll come back soon."

But Arina never did come back.

Checking the clock and realizing this, Asano sighed exasperatedly and the rest saw him stand up from his seat and went somewhere.

After a few minutes, they saw him return whilst clutching Arina's wrist, as the girl looked like she was just being scolded, sobbing in grief.

"Oh, I'm a dreadfully horrible, ungrateful little girl," she wept dramatically.

The study session did turn out better with Arina keeping in mind that everyone was doing her a great favor, though, she again forgot it in their next study session.

In addition, every week since her return from the wild, Arina had been visiting the deceased students' tombs persistently.

"Here you go, Sakura-chan. I bet you would like my freshly baked almond cookies. And Chimon-kun, you've been begging for one all the time so I'm gonna give you twice as much as everyone," she placed the cookies beneath their tombs and went on to talk with them.

"Maeda-san, I suppose one day when I'm already up - up - up in the blissful heaven, then I shall find you and we can start over again. I know deep inside there's still some goodness in you that's in need to unravel. And I'm gonna be the first one to do it," said Arina in full determination, and went ahead to talk to Miyake and Shirai.

That's it. Arina spent more hours talking to dead people than her daily self-study time. If it weren't for the boys, she wouldn't have stayed any longer in class A. It has been said that her loving people nature have saved her in many situations.

After the news of the incident, all her acquaintances, including class 3-E, comrade brothers, neighbors, supermarket clerks, hairdressers, etc, interrogated her nonstop and were relieved that she survived. In addition, they even gifted her various things in the context of congratulating her for surviving and returning home.

"Oh, how big my love is for people!" said Arina all the time.

One perfectly beautiful morning in Arina's perspective, the girls in her class rushed to her with infrequent delightful faces, which were added with excitement in the mixture.

"Oh! What is the matter?" asked Arina in utmost curiosity.

"Well, here's good news!" began Kimi Kihira, giggling. The giggle continued for so long Kuroda Kaguya sighed and picked up what was left for her friend to say.

"We gonna have swimming lessons starting from tomorrow!" she exclaimed, and the K-squad trio hugged each other and jumped up and down in happiness.

But Arina didn't react well to the news.

"Swimming!?" she ejaculated. "Do-do we have to put on the school swimsuit?"

"Well, of course, yes, Arina."

"But I'm size zero!!" cried Arina bitterly, as Kaguya freaked out and whispered to her that they were still in class.

"But do you know what's the best part of it?" Kimi smirked, delivering her gaze to the distressed foreign girl with the look of 'you know it'.

But to her chagrin, Arina was oblivious to the best part she was referring to.

"Asano-kun's abs!!" Kimi blurted out in unfathomableness.

Their classmates immediately drew their attention to them. Some blinked and some looked as though they were saying 'what did you just say?'

Kimi and Kaguya broke into sweats, though Kokomi, being a good friend as she was, spoke up for them.

"Oh, we really are looking forward to gawking at Asano-kun's abs!"

The class fell into an awkward silence, whilst Asano also overheard and furrowed his eyebrows, feeling uneasy. Meanwhile, Nagasawa Juria rolled her eyes disdainfully and told her girlfriends how pathetic those girls were.

Kimi and Kaguya darted their bloodshot eyes at Kokomi indicating they want to strangle her.

Whatever thing happened in front of her right now, Arina was lost in the prospect of having to wear such a revealing outfit as the school swimsuit.

At night, she came home and immediately added padding to the swimsuit.
