Chapter 6: Nice Swing Hermione.

Second Year

A few more months passed and things didn't necessarily go up hill. Christmas was as wonderful as it was the year before. Once again Jake, Dasha, and Eowyn went home along with Hermione. Ron was originally planning on going home, but he and his siblings ended up staying last minute. Luckily for me, Draco did go home this year. It was much quieter this year than it was last year. I think most students wanted to go home because of the dementors and Sirius Black's escape. The only other Slytherin students that remained were Theodore Nott and Veronica Mason, but they were older than me.

On Christmas Day I met up with Harry and the Weasley's later on. I was surprised that Ginny and I were starting to somewhat get along. We had a massive snowball fight with everyone and stayed out there until we were numb. Once we couldn't feel out fingers, we went back inside to sit by the Great Hall fire. Harry told me something shocking. He found out that Sirius Black was his godfather...now that was completely unexpected news. I didn't believe it at first. Apparently Sirius was his father's very best friend. How could he have turned on the Potter's then? This wasn't adding up.

Much too soon, everyone returned to Hogwarts from their break. It wasn't that I wasn't thrilled to see my friends but it was nice having a break from classes. Draco was back to the way he was last year with ordering me around a lot more. Now he was threatening me with turning me into the professors for sneaking into Hogsmeade. I could never win with him. At least he let up on the homework assignments so that I didn't get detentions for missing my own, but that was only because I would have to miss our Quidditch practice.

With extra practice scheduled and classes starting back up, I didn't have much time to spend with my Gryffindor friends. The only time I got to see the trio was during Care of Magical Creatures. Ron and Hermione weren't talking either, something about Ron's rat being killed? The only person who I ever managed to find was Jake. Harry mysteriously received a Firebolt from an anonymous source, but McGonagall quickly took it away to his dismay. Everyone was extremely jealous of it. I hoped he got it back and secretly hoped he would let me give it a try.

Slytherin's match against Ravenclaw was definitely the best moment so far in the year. Jake, sticking to our bet we made a few months ago, wore my green Slytherin scarf and sat on the Slytherin side. It was probably the only game where people were more focused on the stands than in the game. I couldn't help myself from laughing every time I looked over and saw him glaring up at me. Gabe, Cal, and Nico, the only others who knew about the bet, were laughing with me as well. Draco once again was on me about hanging out with Harry again. He would threaten me every time I was seen with him. I had to go back to my old routine of only talking to them during classes.

Harry finally was given back his Firebolt from McGonagall. It was just in time for Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw match. I was running late, the match was just about to begin and I wanted to see it. I walked down into the common room and saw Draco and his gang all walking out carrying very long black robes. "What are those for?" I asked them curiously.

"Surprise for Potter," Draco answered smirked at me. I thought for a moment, black ripped up robes...Dementors! They were going to pretend to be Dementors!

"That's not a good idea..." I warned. I didn't want to tell them that Harry has been working on the patronus charm with Professor Lupin. Draco would report Lupin for giving 'special treatment' or something. He was an amazing teacher and I didn't want him going anywhere.

"We didn't ask for your opinion," Draco responded. I rolled my eyes and rushed off, hoping to get there in enough time to warn Harry.

Unfortunately, I did not get there in enough time. When I arrived they were already playing. I tried to get to Ron and Hermione, but I couldn't get through the tight crowd. I found Jake near the edge and told him what Draco was going to do. I was hoping he'd get to Hermione or Ron somehow and they'd be able to do something. I then made my way over to the Slytherin section. I really needed to find a way to stop this. Once again, that didn't happen. By the time I reached the Slytherin side, Harry had blasted Draco and the rest to the ground.

McGonagall was over there yelling furiously at them. Most of the Gryffindor players were laughing at what Harry had done to them. Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Flint were all taken to the hospital wing. Well, they can't say I didn't warn them. I couldn't help but laugh a bit. At least Harry wasn't the one hurt. Gryffindor ending up winning that match.

I decided to go visit them in the hospital, just rub it in their faces that I was right and they were wrong. I pranced through the doors and into the hospital wing. I spotted the white blonde hair and began walking over to where they lay. "Did I tell you or what?" I said on the verge of laughing.

"Shut up..." Draco muttered. He seemed to be half asleep. I took a seat down in one of the chairs and giggled to myself.

"I'm almost glad that you didn't take my advice," I laughed. "It's much more fun proving it to you this way."

"If you're smart you'll stop speaking..." he warned. I smirked at him and stood up to leave. "Wait," he called. I sharply turned around.

"What?" I asked confused.

"Now that I'm injured, I'm not going to be able to complete my homework in time..." I knew where this was going. Maybe I shouldn't have visited them after all. "So that looks like you're going to have to do it for me."

"Are you freaking kidding me," I rolled my eyes. "This whole blackmail thing is getting kind of old, isn't it?"

"Oh Professor Snape," Draco drawled on. "I happened to come across Scarlett Nyx at Hogsmeade a few weeks ago, I'm just curious to how a second year was able to..."

"Alright, enough," I cut in. "Save the speech; I'll do your stupid homework." I could almost feel him smirking behind my back as I walked out of the room.

Later on in the week, it was a bit more exciting than usual. Sadly, I had double the amount of homeowork until Draco returned. He was taking total advantage of me. Something awkward, yet surprisingly nice, happened. I would not tell anyone, not a single person. Except for the people who were involved, obviously, but even if they told anyone else I would deny it.

It was late on a Saturday night, too late to go out but too early to call it a night. Our dorm was full. Christina, Amelie, Celina, Dasha, Eowyn, and I were gathered around shuffling throughout our things, skimming through homework or looking out at the lake. "Alright, I'm bored. Time for a game, gather round," Christina said. She took a seat on her bed in the middle of the room. Amelie, Celina, and Eowyn, who was bored out of her mind, quickly gathered around. "Scared for a little game, Nyx?" Christina questioned.

I don't know why, but that always got to me when people accused me of being scared. Bad habit I suppose, anyway, I stood up from my bed and walked over taking a seat. Whatever, I guess I could play her stupid little game. "Scott," Christina called to Dasha who was reading. "What about you?"

"No thanks," Dasha responded uninterested as she flipped a page from her text book.

"Come on, don't be so boring Scott." As much as I didn't like being called scared, she most definitely did not like to be called boring. Dasha for the first time rolled her eyes and stood up plopping down next to me.

"Let's play a casual game, of just dare," Christina began. "Amelie, take it away." Amelie glanced between us and her eyes settled on Eowyn.

"Eowyn..."  Amelie began. Eowyn was sent down into the common room after getting a beautiful makeover from Amelie. It left her looking absolutely dreadful and she was sent down into the common room to look for a 'book'. She came back up completely embarrassed, it was a full house of students in older grades and she was still in her shamrock patterned pajamas.

Christina was dared to send a very clichéd love letter to Harry Potter, written by me of course, and signed by her. It confessed her 'secret' love to him but how it was forbidden because she was a Slytherin. In the end, she was fuming but had to send it out anyway. I couldn't wait to hear Harry's reaction on that one. Eowyn dared Dasha, surprisingly, to be completely out of character and go down into the common room and be completely wild and fall onto her boyfriends lap as if she were drunk. Dasha was very embarrassed and after that she dared Celina to run through the common room wearing nothing but a bath towel. Dasha got bored of the game and went to bed.

Celina had Amelie quickly run up to the boy's dorm and steal one of their ties. She came back completely out of breath because apparently some boys were in the room she was in, but she still got the tie. "Well, everyone has been dared but you Scarlett, and I have yet to dare anyone," Christina announced. Fantastic. Of course she would wait until I had to go, she'd probably make me run through the common room in my underwear or something ridiculous. "I dare you...to kiss Draco Malfoy." I choked on mid air.

"What!" I choked out. No...I wasn't ready...I mean-I didn't like him. I was most definitely not going to kiss him. "No way, none of you had to kiss anyone. Besides, we hate each other."

"Exactly, all the more funny." Christina smirked deviously. "Now, are you going to be the only one to chicken out, or are you going to get off your arse?" I glared at her, wanting to light her head on fire.

I pushed myself up off the ground, filled with disbelief in what I was about to do. I took a few steps down the stairs, the rest got up to follow me like we did for the others. How would I ever be able to explain this to him? I walked through the common room slowly. I looked back to see them Christina and the rest crouch down the steps with chuckles on their face. Eowyn was the only one who held an unsure expression. People were looking at me and were quiet, by now they must have caught on to our game as three people have already came down from our dorm doing wacky things.

Walking over to Draco, I stopped in front of him. He looked up with a smug look. "Ah Nyx, finished with my Potion's es-" Not wanting hesitate any longer as it would probably lead me to chickening out, I leaned in and kissed him. It was surprisingly...nice, no don't think that way Carlie. After pulling back, he looked very taken back and stared for a second before gathering his usual self up. "I know I'm extremely irresistible," he began announcing loudly as Parkinson looked as if she could punch me. "But don't think that's going to get you out of completely my essay now." Without saying a thing I turned around and followed a similar pattern to Dasha and went straight to sleep.

Basically, that Sunday I was afraid to go downstairs. I stayed in my dorm for the most of it but unfortunately when I did go down, Draco happened to be there and immediately brought up my new found 'love' for him. Though after a week, it must have bored him and he stopped talking about it. The love letter confused Harry, he felt awkward around Christina now. I didn't bother saying it was a dare.

The castle was being searched again shortly after that night. I didn't hear this directly. Actually more like overheard during Potions, but apparently Ron Weasley woke up and saw Sirius Black standing over him with a knife. He also had all the passwords to the Gryffindor tower now, which apparently was lost by Neville Longbottom. Poor guy, that would happen to him. He also received a very threatening howler from his grandmother the next morning at breakfast. That's a little overwhelming to believe, so I was going to have to wait to hear it myself. I couldn't sleep that night, nor could anyone else for that matter. I was holding my wand for protection. Nobody said anything, but I'm sure they were doing the same thing.

I was sitting in my last class of the day, Potions. Gross. I hated Potions. I was failing miserably, even if the teacher like me I still would be failing. Apparently the potion we were working on was supposed to be simple. There was only ten minutes left and mine looked nothing like it was supposed to. "Done!" Dasha clapped her hands together. I glanced over at her potion, it was a light green color and very thick looking. I looked over at Eowyn who was just finishing up, her potion was the same color as Dasha's but more watery. Snape walked by eyeing our potions, he stopped in front of Dasha's. "Twenty points to Slytherin." Dasha smiled proudly at us.

Snape turned around and glanced at a boy from Gryffindor's potion that resembled Eowyn's. "Ten points from Gryffindor," he sneered. "For not following the directions carefully." Eowyn looked at me nervously, if anyone had something to worry about it was me. He walked by Eowyn's potion. "Fifteen points to Slytherin." Of course. Being in Slytherin had its perks. She sighed relieved. Finally Snape made his way over to my potion, he glared at it and then me. "Ms. Nyx," he said coldly. "Do you know which color your potion is supposed to be?"

"Green..." I said glancing around the class.

"And what color is your potion?"

"Green..." I muttered looking down at my bright yellow potion. Snape glared at me. "Well, I haven't added the blue yet...to make it green." I smiled innocently.

"You receive a T for the day." I rolled my eyes annoyed. "Class dismissed."

A while passed and nothing too exciting happened. Harry explained to us that he spotted Peter Pettigrew on the map. The map was confiscated by Lupin, so Harry couldn't search anymore. I was surprised Lupin took it. He was a great teacher but I could tell he really stuck to the rules. Hagrid hasn't been coming around much, he was too upset about Buckbeak's execution. Hermione seemed even more stressed than before, she was always doing homework and always rushing off somewhere. I asked her how she did it. She had two classes she was taking ran at the same time. I just didn't understand how it was even possible.

I was sitting in the common room that afternoon just trying to catch up on all the work I didn't do. Can't let myself fall too far behind. I saw Draco and his walking smugly across the common room. "What's got you so happy?"

"I'm off to see the execution of the beast that almost killed me," Draco said with a smirk and was about to continue on.

"What?" I jumped up. "That's today?" I asked and then glared at him. "This is your entire fault!" I yelled at him. "If you actually listened this wouldn't have happened in the first place."

"You're telling me about listening?" he asked amused. I glared at him and then began storming off. "Where are you going?" he demanded. He and his friends began following me all the way outside of the castle, demanding where I was going.

Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing. I was going to head down to Hagrid's, to see if there was any possible chance of Malfoy being wrong about the execution. They were closely walking behind me, demanding to know what I was doing. As I was heading out to the fields, I passed a man sharpening a blade while grinning. That could only be the executioner. I glared at him as I passed, he just smirked back at me. They really were going to execute the Hippogriff.  I stopped when I came to the edge of a cliff, you could see Hagrid's hut perfectly. "What a perfect view," Malfoy said arrogantly. "We'll be able to see everything from up here!"

"You're such a jerk," I said turning around. I was about to continue my rant when Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked out.

"Ah," Draco said to them. "Come to see the show?" I glared at him and then stood over by Harry and Ron. Hermione was screaming at him while pinning him against the rock at wand point. Now, I didn't know if I should stop her from hurting him or let him get the punishment he rightfully deserved. What to do...

"He's not worth it Hermione," Ron called to her. Hermione turned around and glanced at us. Draco loosened up and smirked arrogantly at his friends. Hermione swung around faster than I could blink and nailed him in the jaw with her fist. He and his friends were out of there in seconds.

"Why didn't I think of that?" I said and laughed.

"What were you doing down here anyways?" Harry asked me curiously.

"I came to see if Buckbeak was really going to be executed. I thought he was just bluffing," I answered. "What are you guys doing down here?"

"We came to see Hagrid," Harry said. "Want to join us?"

"Did you have to ask?" I laughed. We all squeezed under Harry's invisibility cloak and then headed down to Hagrid's.
