Chapter Seven

Disclaimer: This is very, very much like the book. The quotes at the beginning are literally taken right from the book. I could not think of a way that I could possibly wrap up the story while avoiding this crucial moment, I promise that it will pick up again in the next one. For now, enjoy the very Harry Potter-ish chapter!

Chapter 7: Sirius Black.

Second Year

Harry knocked on the large wooden door. Hagrid opened the door up and looked around completely confused. "It's us," Harry whispered. "We're wearing the invisibility cloak."

"You shouldn've come!" Hagrid whispered back, but he stepped aside and let us in anyways. Once we were inside Harry pulled off the invisibility cloak. We barely managed to fit under it. I looked at Hagrid, he wasn't crying or throwing a tantrum. He just looked completely lost. "Cauldron cake?" Hagrid asked, his hands shaking as he held up the tin and not looking at us.

"Where is Buckbeak Hagrid?" Hermione asked him.

"I-I took him outside," Hagrid said. "Thought he oughta smell the fresh air before..." he stopped there looking away.

"Can we do anything Hagrid?" Harry asked him. "Maybe Dumbledore..."

"No..." Hagrid said, "Dumbledore tried. He's got no power ter overrule the Committee. Yeh knew what Lucius Malfoy's like..." Poor Hagrid. I felt horrible for him. "I'll be beside Buckbeak when it happens..." Hermione's eye began to water and tears were streaming down her face, but Hagrid didn't see them. Me, I never cried, much. Maybe once or twice, but it rare, I was extremely good at pushing away my emotions when needed.

"Ron!" Hermione gasped, we all glanced at her. "I-I don't believe it, it's Scabbers!"

"What?" Ron asked. "Scabbers?" Ron walked over towards Hermione and quickly bent down to pick up his rat. "Scabbers!" he said. "I thought you were dead!"

"Looks like somebody owes someone an apology," Hermione said crossing her arms. Ron gripped the squirming rat tightly.

"Yes," Ron replied smartly. "And when I see Crookshanks, I'll tell him."

"I meant me!" Hermione said just as I let out a scream. They all turned to me, but something just nailed me in the back... I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up with a bruise in the morning.

"What the..." I said bending over to pick up a rock.  Then Harry was nailed with a rock in the back of the head. I looked out the window to see where this was coming from, when I saw the Minister, Macnair, and Dumbledore all coming towards the house. "They're coming!" I said.

"Yeh gotta go!" Hagrid said quickly. "They mustn' find yeh here!" Ron put Scabbers in his pocket and Harry threw the invisibility cloak over all of us.

We headed out the back door, passing Buckbeak along the way. He looked so peaceful just chewing on the Pumpkins. Hagrid's black eyes began to water while looking at him. We quickly made it back up the edge of the cliff. Harry pulled the cloak from all of us and we stood there and looked down. I couldn't watch. So I turned my head and that's when the sound of an axe broke the silence. Hermione began sobbing and put her head on Ron's shoulder. "They did it!" she gasped. Harry slid the invisibility cloak off of us.

We all stood there silently, Harry was debating on whether or not to head back to Hagrid, to make sure he was alright. Hermione's cat was coming out the building. Ron's rat began to squeal. "Crookshanks, Crookshanks, no, stay back," Hermione was telling her cat. The cat was moving quickly towards Ron.

"Scabbers!" Ron yelled while holding him. The rat was squirming like crazy. "Scabb....OW!" Ron dropped Scabbers and clutched his bloody finger. "He bit me!" Scabbers began running off and Ron was chasing after him, as was Hermione's cat.

We all chased after him, he was running towards the Whomping Willow. "Ron look out!" Hermione called. Ron turned to us and his face was frozen with fear. I spun around. Charging at us was a huge black dog. Harry whipped out his wand and the dog leaped over him while knocking Harry down. I pulled my wand out of my pocket but just as I lifted it, something took the ground out from underneath me. I screamed, as I held onto the tree branch for dear life. I heard a crack and realized that the dog's mouth was wrapped around Ron's leg. He was being dragged into the trunk of the tree. I couldn't see where Hermione and Harry were. I looked and saw the branch heading towards the hole that Ron was dragged into, I let myself fall from the branch and then I rolled into the hole before it could strike again.

I'm completely surprised that I just lived through that moment. Somehow when I stood up, I realized I got off with only scratches and bruises. I heard Ron screaming and I began to follow the voice with my wand out. The tunnel was rather long and it lead to a completely destroyed room covered in dust. My heart was racing. More than anything I wanted to turn around and run back out the hole. But I couldn't leave Ron, and also didn't want the Whomping Willow to attack me either. Maybe Harry and Hermione were right behind me. "Ron!" I called as I saw him in the corner, he was gripping his leg with one hand and his rat in his other. "Where are we?" I asked glancing around.

"I don't..." Ron's face drained of all color and he pointed weakly to the corner.

"What's the mat..." But as I turned around, I saw exactly as to what the matter was. The black dog began transforming into a person. But it wasn't just anybody, it was Sirius Black. I lifted up my wand.

He looked like he could be a vampire, aside from the fact of him being filthy and having yellow teeth. His skin was chalky looking and his eyes were black. Harry and Hermione walked in at the moment. "Harry it's a trap!" Ron called while pointing to Sirius. "He's an Animagus!" Harry and Hermione lifted up their wands as well.

"Expelliarmus!" Sirius croaked as he was holding Ron's wand. All three of our wands flew out of our hands. He was stronger than I thought. "I thought you'd come and help your friend," Black was speaking hoarsely to Harry. "Your father would have done the same for me, I'm grateful for you not running to get a teacher. It will make this much easier." Harry started to charge at Black but Hermione and I struggled to keep him back.

"If you want to kill Harry you'll have to kill us too!" Ron said attempting to stand up, but he was swaying like mad.

"Lie down," Black told him quietly. "You'll damage that leg even more."

"Did you hear me?" Ron asked angrily. "You're going to have to kill all of us!"

"There's only going to be one murder tonight," Black grinned widely.

"Whys that? You didn't care last time after slaughtering all those muggle to get to Pettigrew!" Harry yelled to him.

"Harry..." Hermione and I warned him.

"HE KILLED MY MUM AND DAD!" Harry yelled, and pulling together all his strength he ripped himself from me and Hermione's grasps, and Harry tackled Black to the ground. They began fighting, Black wasn't actually fighting back. It looked like he was defending himself. As this was happening, I began searching for all of our wands. Hermione went to go help Ron who you could tell was losing a lot of blood. I tossed Hermione her wand and picked up mine. Black dropped Ron's wand which I quickly gabbed and threw Ron. I saw Harry's wand lying there.

"Harry!" I called, he turned to me and I handed him his wand. He put it to Black's throat.

"Going to kill me, Harry?" Black asked quietly. Harry and him began arguing. Black was telling Harry that'd he regret killing him without hearing the story which made Harry even more angry. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

"WE'RE UP HERE!" Hermione yelled desperately. "WE'RE UP HERE! SIRIUS BLACK-QUICK!"

The door burst open and Professor Lupin burst into the room, his wand was up and his eyes looked around the room. Immediately I felt a thousand times safer. Lupin was here, he would help us. His eyes landed on Harry and Black. "Expelliarmus!" Lupin cried, and all of our wands flew out of our hands. I stared a Lupin, what was he doing? Lupin slowly approached Black with his wand. Harry stepped aside. "Where is he, Sirius?" Black raised his boney hand and pointed to Ron, alright, I was completely lost. "But then..." Lupin said to himself, "...why hasn't he shown himself? Unless he was the one...unless you switched...without telling me..." Black nodded towards Lupin. What was going on!? Harry must have been thinking the same thing, because he began asking what was going on as well. Although all us froze when Lupin lowered his wand and embraced Black into a hug.

"What!" I gasped. "You're...you're friends?"

"I didn't tell anyone!" Hermione shrieked. I quickly turned to her. Okay, now what was she talking about?

"Hermione," Lupin replied black. "I can explain." Harry was glaring like mad toward Lupin.

"I trusted you!" Harry yelled. "And you've been his friend!"

"No!" Hermione shouted. "Don't trust him, he's been helping Black! He wants you dead too, he's a werewolf." I gasped, I should have known. That day when we were learning about Boggarts. Lupin was acting funny when my boggart was a wolf. And then his was a moon...and then Snape made us study werewolves when Lupin was out every month...around the full moon. Merlin, I'm so stupid!

"No Hermione!" Lupin shouted back. "Yes I am a werewolf, but I haven't been helping Sirius and I most certainly do not want Harry dead." Lupin continued. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the map, I thought it was mistaking. How could he be with you?" Lupin looked at Ron curiously. "I was watching the map, and when I saw Sirius drag the two of you..."

"Only one of us was dragged!" Ron yelled back, clutching his bleeding leg.

"No Ron," Lupin responded quietly. "Two of you." Ron looked up at him like he was crazy. Me, I had absolutely no idea what was going on, I've been lost since Lupin walked in the door. "May I see your Rat?" Ron began going on about how that had to do with anything. "It has to do with everything."

"He's just a rat!" Ron defended sounding slightly confused and angry, I was with him there. Scabbers was just a rat.

"No he's not. He's a wizard."

"An Animagus," added Black. "By the name of Peter Pettigrew." I stared at them wide-eyed. Wait what? Harry and Ron began yelling at both of them, calling them insane and saying the Pettigrew was dead and that Black killed him. I kept my mouth shut, I had nothing to say. Harry went on about how people saw him die. Black began trying to go after Scabbers. Although Lupin was holding him back, wanting to explain everything to us before. Lupin yelled to us that Peter was an unregistered Animagus. He went into a story, about how his three friends, Peter, Sirius, and James all became unregistered Animagus to join him when he was a werewolf so he wouldn't be alone.

"Snape's been right about me all along..." Lupin said at the end of his extremely long speech, which honestly wasn't clearing anything up.

"Snape?" Black said harshly. "What's Snape have to do with anything?"

"He's here, Sirius. He's a teacher at the school," Lupin said and then looked at us. "Professor Snape went to school with all of us, and he's been telling Dumbledore all year not to trust me. Although he had his reasons...Sirius played a trick on him when we were younger that almost got him killed..." Lupin explained to us that Snape was always trying to discover where Lupin went off too and that Snape was very jealous of James, Harry's father. That Sirius was sick of Snape trying to catch Lupin and told him how to get into the tree, so that when he got there he'd have to face Lupin as a werewolf. But Harry's father saved him, and even though Snape saw him, Dumbledore forbid him to tell anyone.

"So that's why Snape hates you?" I asked him after a bit of silence. I was finally picking up on what was going on. "Because he thought you were part of the joke?"

"That's right," sneered a cold voice. Snape appeared behind Lupin. He had Harry's cloak of invisibility, his wand was raised directly towards all of them. Has he been here all along?

"You're making a mistake Severus," Lupin said quickly. "I can explain everything!"

"Two more for Azkaban tonight..." Snape went on ignoring them, holding his wand up. Snape muttered a spell at Lupin that made him unable to move. Snape turned onto Black and held up his wand.

"Professor Snape!" Hermione interrupted stepping forward. "Please, it wouldn't hurt to hear what he has to say..."

"Silence Ms. Granger," Snape spat. "You, Potter, Weasley, and Nyx are all facing suspension, and more hopefully, expulsion!" Somehow I always ended up getting caught in their trips that faced expulsion.

"Listen to her!" I yelled at Snape. If I was going to be expelled I might as well say what I wanted too.

"For once in your life, hold your tongue Ms. Nyx!" he yelled without looking at me, keeping his focus on Black.

"But if...if there was a mistake!" Hermione said.

"Hermione's right!" I agreed.

"KEEP QUIET, YOU STUPID GIRLS!" Snape shouted. I glared at him. "DON'T TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND." From there on he ignored us, threatening Black about summoning the dementors. Then another strange thing happened, Harry stepped in front of Black to defend him. "Out of the way Potter." Snape spat.

"YOU'RE PATHETIC!" Harry yelled to him. "JUST BECAUSE THEY MADE A FOOL OF YOU AT SCHOOL, YOU WON'T EVEN LISTEN!" I suppose Harry was now starting to believe Black and Lupin...or maybe he just hated Snape that much.

"SILENCE! I WILL NOT BE SPOKEN TO LIKE THAT!" Snape yelled at Harry, before Snape could react, Harry raised his wand and blasted Snape back into the wall, he was knocked out. I gaped at Harry, that was unexpected... Hermione began muttering on how much trouble we'd be getting in...Damn, now we were really going to be expelled. No getting ourselves out of this one.

Harry freed Lupin of his curse. Black and Lupin went back to the whole rat subject. Scabbers was missing a toe, just like Peter was missing a finger. Although Harry still blamed Black for his parent's death because he was the secret keeper and all. "Don't you see Harry!" Lupin added. "Peter betrayed your mother and father! Not Sirius, he was the one who tracked them down..."

"THAT'S NOT TRUE!" Harry yelled. "HE WAS THEIR SECRET-KEEPER!"

"Harry," Black replied slowly. "You're right, I as good as killed them. I persuaded them to pick Peter to be the secret keeper at the last moment. That night I went to go check on him, yet he wasn't there. When I got to your parent's house, I saw everything. I realized what Peter has done...What I had done..." So Peter was the secret keeper all along? It all began making sense to me. Black was innocent! Pettigrew framed him. After that small argument, Ron handed over Scabbers who was squirming like mad. A flash of light came out from Black and Lupin's wands and the rat began to transform. I gasped at the sight, in front of us appeared the man who really betrayed Harry's parents. His watery-eyes filled with fear as he looked up at us, his thin hair barely covered his head, and his rat like teeth stuck out. We all know now that Peter Pettigrew was never dead.

I know it was basically word for word Harry Potter with a few minor changes, but any thoughts on what you think will happen next? :)
