Mahi bhai entered Virat's room and saw him bent over a book with utmost concentration.

He looked up and saw Mahi bhai, and turned back to his book, maintaining an injured silence.

Mahi went up to him and tilted the book to see the cover. It was the same book they had all been teasing Virat about.

"Oh, so you had it with you today," said Mahi.

"I never go anywhere without it," said Virat sulkily.

Mahi bhai was the biggest expert in the world at hiding his emotions, but this time he couldn't hide the look that passed over his face fleetingly.

Virat wasn't looking at him, however, so he was still sulking.

"It's nice that you're trying to read a book, since you don't reach much normally," said Mahi bhai encouragingly.

"I'm not trying to read. I can read."

"Of course, of course," said Mahi bhai hastily. "I was just appreciating your intent."

"Humph," said Virat ungraciously.

Seeing that Virat's mood didn't look to be improving at all--the idiots had really managed to piss him off this time--Mahi bhai threw an arm around Virat and asked cheerfully, "Want to go out for a bit, Cheeku?"

"No thanks, I'm reading."

"All right," said Mahi bhai regretfully.

The door banged open and as both of them had expected, Rohit barged in, followed by Jaddu, Shikhar, Jinks and Bhuvi.

"What have you all come here for?" said Mahi bhai severely. "Can't you see he's reading?"

As his friends started howling with laughter, choking, "Virat--reading!", Virat pulled away from Mahi bhai, scowling darkly.

"Such a din," muttered Mahi bhai disapprovingly.

Rohit, Jaddu and Shikhar descended on the bed and flopped down, pressed against Virat from all sides so that Virat couldn't squirm away.

"Will you please move?" said Virat, annoyed.

Rohit threw an arm around him violently, showing no intention at all of moving.

"Are you angry with us, Virat bhaiya?" asked Jaddu in an excellent imitation of Kuliya's worshipping voice.

Virat continued studying the book.

The door opened again and all the kids thundered in, having got the whiff of a get together in Virat bhai's room.

"Look, he's still sucking up to Mahi bhai. Even in front of Mahi bhai," said Shikhar, who was evidently set on the idea.

"So immersed in the book," said Hardik snidely.

"Too busy to talk to us," said Rahul sadly.

Virat tried to ignore them, but he looked so disturbed that Mahi bhai said, "He doesn't need to suck up to me."

Virat perked up a little as the others demanded, "Why!"

"He already knows I love him best," concluded Mahi bhai, effectively destroying every person in room apart from Virat like a boss.

Virat looked supremely triumphant as he flung his arms around Mahi bhai, yelling, "Yes, I know!"

"What about me, Mahi bhai?" wailed Hardik, trying to prise Virat away from Mahi bhai, but neither of them would budge.

"How can you love him best?" screeched Rohit, looking horrified.

Mahi bhai looked at Rohit challengingly over Virat's head. "You'd know all about it, Ro."

Rohit deflated and Virat couldn't look any smugger.

Hardik was wailing so tragically that Mahi bhai, just to shut him up, extended an arm and pulled him into the hug, and that was, of course, the cue for everyone trying to join the hug, shoving each other and shrieking.

Jinks' knee knocked the book on Virat's lap, and Virat snatched it up at once, crying, "Careful, Jinks!"

Bhuvi caught Jinks' eyes and grinned as Virat clutched the book against his chest.

"That book is not Mahi bhai, you know, Virat bhaiya," Yuzi told him.

"Don't you dare start again," warned Mahi bhai, and Yuzi, like Rohit earlier, subsided.

Virat stayed snuggled into Mahi bhai complacently, because his big brother seemed to be in a mood to cut down anyone who attacked him.

"You're the best, Mahi bhai," he told Mahi bhai in a whisper.

Mahi bhai ruffled Virat's hair. "I know that, Cheeku," he whispered back.
