"I don't date. It's my policy. One hook up and that's it. No dating, not now or ever. When I'm ready to settle down I'm pretty sure the right woman will be in my path."

"Oh. My. God. You are so up your own ass, Stone. It doesn't work like that. You don't decide oh yeah now it's time to settle down and some woman is going to materialize. Besides, you do know it's 2024, right because you won't have any woman want to stay with you if you don't expect some lip back." She strides off. I jog after her.

"Hey slow down. Of course, I know it doesn't work like that. I'm just not interested in dating or getting married. Hell, I'm at the top of my game, I'm the best in the NHL right now, I don't have time to get side-tracked by a woman or a relationship."

"But you do want one eventually?"

I pause. I'm not entirely sure to be honest. "I don't know. I saw my folks go through divorce and it has kind of put me off. My mother had to bring me up on her own for a while before she met my stepdad, Lenny."

She says nothing for a while, that's a first. "That must have been hard." Her voice is a whisper, did she actually have a hint of empathy?

"Don't need to feel sorry for me, shit happens. That's life." Only I know it has hardened me some. Watching my mom and dad fight wasn't pretty nor was watching my mother struggle for a few years until Lenny made a good woman out of her and they had my sister, Apple. She is the light of their life, but my mom has never put me second. My mom is a decent woman, she's an amazing mother and I love her with all my heart.

Only, the whole divorce thing, well yeah, of course it's made me reticent about getting married and having kids. My mom and Lenny are lucky they found each other. I may not be so lucky.

"I don't feel sorry for you, Stone. I'm just saying I can see how that would have an impact on a young kid and how you may not want to date anyone or settle down. But you shouldn't let your folk's divorce be a reflection on how you will lead our own life. You may get knocked off your feet one day."
