Chapter 4
I tried to dress as good as my wardrobe allowed me to. I had no idea of what Zayn's job was, but just by taking a glance at his clothes I knew I had to wear a suit. I tied my hair up so it looked a little more professional. It was quite long and messy, for I had let it grow since Sebastian and I broke up. Finally, I got out of my room.
My mom was in the kitchen making something to eat. I was completely sure that she would go completely mad if I told her that I was going to have a job interview to be the bodyguard of a strange man I found at a bar, so I needed to have a plan. Maybe I could tell her that I was going to be the man's personal lawyer, or that I was going to work in a big law agency... Or I could simply tell her that I was going to a job interview, no details involved. She wouldn't refuse when she clearly knew about our money problems.
I entered the kitchen, sitting next to Stella, who was reading one of those long books about mysteries and murders. She usually liked to spend her time reading about people getting killed. That's actually the main reason for why she chose to study science, so she could work in a crime laboratory.
"Oh well! Where are you going so well dressed?" my sister asked, closing her book.
"I have a job interview" my mom walked towards us with a big smile on her face.
"Really?" I nodded "I am so proud of you my little puppy. You have always been one of my greatest prides." She said as she kissed me and Stella on the cheek.
"What job are you applying to?" they both stared at me with curiosity in their eyes. Even if lying wasn't something I was fond of, I had to do it. My mom always wanted me to choose a well earning major degree, and when I told her I got the full Cambridge scholarship her face lit up in joy and pride. I didn't have the guts to tell her that I wasn't actually interested in that, mainly because people usually looked for alphas to be their lawyers, because the feeling of protection it's on their nature, and it's easier for them to defend their customers. Even if I didn't like to live under what society thought was 'normal', many people did and I was always sure I'll have a hard time finding a job.
But here I am, minutes apart from having a job interview... to be a bodyguard... to be the bodyguard of an alpha.
"The interview will be with a business man. I saw him the other day when I was leaving the campus and he asked me if I needed a job." I replied, trying to sound as convinced as possible.
"We wish you good luck baby. I'm sure you'll do great" said my mom before going back to cooking. I looked at Stella, who just went back to her book.
"Okay then, see you later." I stood up and left a little kiss on my mother's cheek and rubbed Stella's shoulder as a goodbye.
I walked down to the direction where I told Zayn to meet me, and waited for a few minutes. There was not a single soul at the park, just a few elderly that were walking their dogs.
My hands were sweating. I had taken my pills that day, so my scent wouldn't be noticeable. Since I was a kid, I knew my scent was different from the other omegas. I've always smelled sweeter than my mother's friends and the kid's I met during school. When my father left us, my mother decided to send me to an only omega's school, there I learnt that being a male omega was considered something negative, and that 'my kind' was usually considered a toy for the powerful alphas, but I wasn't going to be one more in that group.
As I grew up, I noticed that many alphas started surrounding me because of my scent, along with the fact that I couldn't help it. It wasn't until many years later that I discovered that birth control pills are also good to hide your scent. I consulted with many doctors and omegas, so they could tell me the reason my scent was so strong and how to stop it, but none of them found an answer. All the doctors were all alphas, of course they wouldn't find an answer to how to make my scent more subtle when they could just round near me. Finally, a doctor told me there was a suppressant strong enough to hide my scent. Those pills weren't as expensive as I thought and worked pretty well for me, making it almost impossible to notice my scent. It was hard at first to get used to all the hormone changes and to not have as many heats as before, but it all got better as time went by. Alphas didn't come around me as much, and I didn't feel like a toy for them anymore.
A black car stopped in front of where I was standing, the back window opened and Zayn popped his head out with a big smile on his face.
"Wonder Boy! I hope you didn't have to wait long" Liam hopped off the driver's seat and opened the back door for me. Liam's scent was strong, deep, almost too much; but at the same time it was sweet and it didn't bother me to have him near. I got into the car next to Zayn and shook his hand. "Are you ready?"
"The interview is in the car?" I asked, deeply confused. He laughed and shook his head.
"No, we are going to one of my properties so I can explain to you a little more about your job." I nodded and the car started moving.
Zayn was a charming man, he always asked if I was alright during the trip and, continuously, asked me if I wanted something to eat or drink. His scent was different from Liam's, it was sweet and sour at the time. He surely smelled like an alpha... but something didn't quite fit. I had never smelled any scent even similar to his, but I had to admit that everyone had a different scent and that for sure I haven't smelled them all.
The car stopped in front of a building I had never seen before, it seemed new and pretty fancy. We got out of the car and walked into an office, Zayn took a seat on one side of the desk and smiled at me.
"Okay then," he took a notepad and a pen out of a box. "Why did you decide to accept the job offer?" he questioned.
"Umm... Well, I just graduated and need money to help my mother and sister" Zayn wrote down a few things and looked up to me.
"What did you study?"
"I have a Law degree." He nodded and wrote down something else.
"What university did you attend?"
"Cambridge" his eyes popped in surprise.
"And why aren't you a lawyer now?"
"I never really liked the idea of being a lawyer, but I just graduated so I guess I will have to do it someday in the future." He nodded
"You know what, you seem like a good guy" I smiled "I liked you since I met you. Are you okay with going to an academy for a few months so you can learn all about protection and defence?"
"Yes, that sounds good to me." A wide smile appeared on my face.
"In that case," he stood up and looked at me "think of yourself as hired" I stood up and shook his hand "But," Liam walked towards us, a folder with many pages in his hands. He gave it to Zayn and walked to the door "first you have to know that what we do is completely confidential. You have to sign a few confidentiality documents. They will explain everything to you at the academy but," he pointed towards the pen and the documents "I need you to sign this so we can proceed."
I looked at all those pages and sat again, I was grateful to know about laws and contracts at this moment. I started reading the documents, which mainly revolved around me not being able to tell anyone what they worked in, where they lived or the people they worked with. I took a few minutes and signed.
"Welcome to the business then, mister Styles." Zayn said, with a more serious voice now. Liam took the folder and gave me a direction where I had to be tomorrow at first in the morning.
Now that I have a job. How the hell would I tell my mother that I was leaving our home? It couldn't be that hard, right?
☺☻☺☻
Explaining things to my mother was by far the hardest part of it all.
I still had in mind her screaming, telling me that I will be like my father, I would leave her alone and that she wouldn't hear of me again. But how could I explain to her that I couldn't actually tell her what the job was about? Doubts still rounded my head, even when I was on the train, with a bag that had just a few clothes and personal hygiene things.
The trip to London was quite calm. I heard some music, and slept for a moment. But when I stood up in front of that huge building, which, according to the direction I was given, was the academy, I felt like my stomach was tied in a knot. I armed myself in strength and walked in to where the reception was, where a tall, strong and scary looking alpha waited to walk me towards mister Payne's office, where he was waiting for me, with a smile on his face.
"Good afternoon, mister Styles. Welcome to the academy." He welcomed me as soon as I walked in. I answered with a smile and a hand shake "I will walk you to what will be your room for the next three months, okay?"
I nodded and we started walking down the halls, passing by many tall alphas and some betas that worked in the kitchen. Finally we arrived at a long hall with many doors. The last one was mine, as I was told.
"Get comfortable" Liam said as he opened the door. The room had a small bed, a window covered by shades, a small closet and a door on the left, a bathroom I guessed. The alpha smiled as a goodbye and left, leaving me alone to fix my things.
I sat on the bed, leaving my bag in front of me, and let out a sigh. These will be some really long three months for me.

Louis and Niall stormed into Zayn's office, who was calmly sitting behind his desk, checking some documents and arranging some new deliveries.
"Guys, I'm glad you arrived so fast." Zayn said, voice full of sarcasm. He was well aware that if he had told them that it was urgent they would have been in his office in the blink of an eye.
"Is everything alright?" Louis asked, with his hands in his pockets... suit trousers pockets.
"I have news," the omega announced, standing up and signing them to sit on the couch before doing the same, the alphas followed him "as you might know, the house personnel are kind of short nowadays." He started, Louis immediately interrupted him with a frown.
"We have a good amount of people working here, Zee. What are you talking about?"
"We need more security," he interrupted with a serious look. "I have been gathering some people that I think fit for security personnel of the house, young men that have the potential to protect the house from any danger that could happen."
"You can't control so many guards, Zayn. Even less when we already have so many of them." Louis grunted, anger staining his scent.
Zayn has this stupid obsession with hiring more and more security because, in his own words, 'nothing like what happened to his parents would ever happen again'. Louis understands him, he really does, but now he was sure that Zayn was over exaggerating.
"I can, I will and I did. Today new guards will arrive, guards who swore and trained to protect this house, to protect us." He replied with simplicity in his voice.
"Niall." Louis muttered with anger littering in his voice.
"Zayn, you can't hire more guards, it's more than enough with the ones we already have here. Plus we have no way to pay them all, we have bigger things to invest in."
The door was slammed open, showing a blond alpha picking his head into the room with a serious face.
"The new guards have arrived at the house." he said, Zayn smiled and stood up.
"Let's go guys, we have to greet the new puppies." He said as he walked out the room, and the three alphas followed him. After all, as associates, they were obliged to greet the new guards with him.
The distance from where they were to where they had to be wasn't long, but it was silent. When they arrived at the gardens, there were seven men, all standing in a militar way, dressed with suits and serious expression on their faces.
But a pair of green eyes landed on a certain blue-eyed alpha, who was still very mad, and Harry wanted to know what was bothering him. He felt like he knew those deep ocean-blue eyes.
"Welcome to my house, my new guards," Zayn started, with amability that was barely over the professional "as you might know, you are here because you have shown impeccable behaviour at the academy. My name is Zayn Malik, and I'm your boss from now on, together with my associates, Mister Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan."
He pointed at each of the named ones, and Harry couldn't help to think about the name of that angry alpha, there was something in him that caught his attention. He couldn't help but to stare at him twice every second. Control yourself, he said to himself. He couldn't be fancying one of his bosses on the first day.
After a few seconds, a pair of curious blue eyes landed on him. He is a beta, the alpha thought. He doesn't have a strong or sweet scent, his features are strong and soft at the time, not as defined as an alpha's. Has he seen him before?
"Mister Styles," Zayn called, the green-eyed man looked at him "It's to my knowledge that you work with two languages apart from Spanish, English and Italian. Right?" Styles nodded and Zayn smiled. "You would be of great help if you were the bodyguard of my associates. Your knowledge might be useful in some cases. Are you okay with that?"
"Of course, Mr. Malik." The curly-haired man replied while nodding.
"Good. To the others, follow mister Payne to get to know the place and your work zones. You can go."
☺☻☺☻
A week went by before the new guards got used to the house, there were no difficult jobs asked to be done apart from training in the gardens and guarding their bosses' offices.
It was Monday, that morning Harry got dressed up and was ready to join Mr. Horan in a delivery. That was going to be his first solo job outside the house.
"The car is ready, Sir." someone announced as he saw Niall walk towards him, carrying a black briefcase.
"Thank you. I want to go with Harry, so give him the keys." He ordered and the chofer gave the keys to Harry.
They got out of the house and into the black Range Rover. Harry drove through London streets until they arrived at what he thought was a private airport, and they got out of the car and entered the building. Harry followed Niall closely, and he could see many security guards with weapons in every door.
"Good morning. How can I help you?" Asked an omega, who was wearing a tight black dress. Niall smiled and laid his hand on the desk, letting his ring to be seen.
"Access to Icarus Rose, please darling." The woman opened her eyes in surprise and moved fast.
"Of course. Please, follow me gentlemen." She opened a door with her fingerprint and the three of them walked towards a beautiful airport, where a marvellous black jet was parked.
There was a man, with his bodyguard, standing in front of the jet, with a cold gaze on their faces. Harry felt a shiver travel down his back, but didn't let it affect his face. That job had to be well done, it had to end well.
"Good afternoon, mister Horan." Said the man, who was wearing a total black suit.
"Mister Black, what a pleasure to see you again" Niall said, with a seriousness he had never seen in him. During the last week, Harry noticed that Niall was always walking around the house, smiling on each step he gave, and sharing many anecdotes from his youth to anyone that was willing to hear.
And surely Harry has been a victim to the enormous will to talk that Niall always had.
"How is Mister Malik? And mister Tomlinson? Has any pretty lady been blessed with their attention lately?" Black asked, not an inch of sympathy shown in his voice.
"Everything's still the same as always, Sir. But we are not here to talk about this, we are here to do business." Niall said coldly.
He laid the briefcase in between them both, showing what it had inside. Four bottles of the product they sell, alpha essence. If someone drank a few drops of that product their scent would smell like an alpha's, even if you were a beta or omega. Amazing.
"Well, everything seems to be in order." The man said after checking the products for a few minutes. Niall smiled a little bit as a form of approval.
"As always, mister Black. Now is your time to pay."
"Straight as always, Sir." He replied. Signing his bodyguard to go get another briefcase from inside the plane so he could exchange with the blond alpha.
"Harry, help me with this." Niall asked, and he immediately held the briefcase so that the alpha could count the thousands of euros that it had. After a moment, he closed it and gave a look back to the other alpha.
"It all seems correct." He announced, shaking mister Black's hand "It was a pleasure to work with you again, Sir. I hope to hear from you sometime soon."
"No doubt about that, young man. Thank you" he said, and immediately turned around and went back into his jet, not sharing any other word.
Niall and Harry also left the place, quickly walking towards the Range Rover, under the attentive gazes of the workers of the place, none of them showed disgust, but respect and even a little bit of fear.
Once they were inside the truck, Harry started driving and they both rushed to the house, where, instead of resting, they would have to organise all the things that this delivery took, give the money to Tomlinson for him to manage the accounts, report back to Malik of how the delivery went and add all of the sold merchandise to the files they had about their clients.
"It's too hot in here." Niall said, taking off the coat he was wearing and opening his window, but Harry didn't let a second pass before he closed it back again. "Hey!"
"Don't open the windows, Sir. They could see that you are the one in the car and try to shoot you." Said Harry, not looking away from the highway.
"Don't be so boring, curly. It would seem like you are the oldest and not me." Niall jokes, taking off his tie "Can we at least get something to eat? Deliveries always leave me starving."
"Where do you want to go?" the bodyguard asked.
"I saw a new Mexican restaurant when we were on our way to the airport. Do you want some tacos, curly?"
"I'll take you there with no problem, Sir." Harry said and Niall sighed.
"I'll take that as a 'I am starving Niall, thank god you want tacos otherwise my stomach would start roaring like a beast'"
Harry turned on the radio, as a sign that he didn't want to talk. But Niall took it as an invitation to, yet again, talk about his past.
"Did you know that when I was little I went to guitar classes?" He said as soon as he hears the an acoustic song in the radio
"Yes, you have told me that, Sir"
"Agh, so formal, curly. I've already told you to call me by my name." The alpha said jokingly, putting his feet over the dashboard.
"I have to respect my boss, Sir." Harry replied.
"Whatever," Niall said, with no interest "as I was saying, I went to guitar classes for three years..."
From that point on, the car was full of Niall's voice. He continued to share his story with Harry, who thought it was funny but will never admit it out loud, it was one of his bosses he was talking about. Once they were at the restaurant, the alpha insisted on him eating something, he didn't have a choice but to sit and wait for him.
Thanks to this 'little' stop, they arrived at the house at around ten of the night, with a happy Niall, because of his food, and a tired Harry for driving so many hours.
"Curly, I need you to go with Louis and give him this money. After that we will go to Zayn and give our final report about the delivery." Niall said as he gave him the briefcase, Harry nodded and saw Niall walk to the other side from where he was going.
With mister Tomlinson. He wasn't going to lie, those ocean blue eyes made him nervous, especially when he kept his gaze at him more time than the others, almost like he was trying to recognise him from some other place. He had tried not to stay alone with him at any moment that week and, even if he was also assigned to be his bodyguard, he thought it was better to obey Horan's commands and spend as much of his time with him than with other alphas. That play obviously wouldn't last long, because mister Tomlinson was also his boss.
He stood in front of his boss' door and with sweaty hands he knocked, three times as they were taught in the academy. A 'come in' was heard and he opened the door.
"Good night, mister Tomlinson." Harry said as he walked into the office, Louis looked at him from his spot behind the desk with his face still serious. "Mister Horan asked me to bring this briefcase to you." he closed the door behind him and walked towards the desk, where he left the case.
"Thank you, take a seat while I finish this." Harry tried to hide the knot in his throat as he sat in front of those blue eyes.
They both went silent, Louis counting the money in the case and Harry closely analysing him. Where has he seen him before?
"Why are you so nervous, Styles?" Louis looked up at the guy sitting in front of him, who at the same time clenched his jaw.
"S- Sorry?" He said with a shaky voice, causing the other to smile.
Louis dropped what he had in his hands and stood up. Harry watched as he moved around the desk and sat on it, leaving himself standing in front of him.
"Why are you nervous?" he repeated.
"I am not nervous, Sir," he replied. Louis laughed and moved his head.
"Then for what reason can I smell the sweat in your hands from here?" Harry clenched his jaw again, and saw him with a little courage filling his body. He wouldn't let himself be intimidated by his boss.
"Have we ever met somewhere else?" Harry asked, completely ignoring the other question. The blue-eyed alpha looked at him for a second and smiled.
"So you like to avoid questions with other questions? Huh?" Harry swallowed hard "Is that why you are so nervous? Because you think we've met before?"
He stood up and broke whatever space there was between them, they both locked their eyes in each other's. Louis kept his face serious and radieted superiority in his scent, alphas, Harry thought with disgust.
"I am not nervous, Sir" Louis looked at him closely, moving his eyes up and down, he licked his lips and stood up, making their height difference more noticeable.
"You think you are intimidating, Styles?" Harry looked up to meet Louis' eyes. "What are you hiding behind those green eyes?" The mentioned swallowed hard, stepping backwards to get some space, only to end up falling into the chair where he was seated a second ago.
Louis laughed and walked back to where his chair was.
"Tell me, Styles" he started, without looking at Harry. "What brought you to us?" His words were more peaceful than before, but Harry was still tense and with a weird ache in his chest.
"Mister Malik recruited me in person." He answered. Louis divided the money into some black envelopes and locked them in a drawer on his desk. He finally locked his eyes on Harry.
"What did you study? I was told that you had just graduated." Harry was surprised by Louis' words.
"I have a law degree." He replied, simple answer.
"What school did you attend?" he continued.
"Cambridge." Louis raised his eyebrows and Harry smiled, feeling a little proud of himself.
"So you are a 'know it all'?" Harry frowned and Louis laughed. Before he could answer, the door opened, Niall walked in and looked at Harry.
"Hey curly, I told you we needed to go with Zayn." Harry closed his eyes with frustration, left out a sigh and stood up.
Louis gave him the paper with the amount of money that the briefcase had and smiled at Harry, who took the paper and turned around.
"Tomorrow I'll be needing your services, curly." Louis said from behind his desk, with a big smile printed on his face. Harry turned around and looked at him.
"Of course, Sir." He replied as professionally as he could before he left the office. Niall looked at Louis and frowned.
"Curly?" he raised an eyebrow and laughed. Louis snorted and went back to his business, causing Niall to walk out of the office laughing out loud.
Louis looked Harry up and down, and winked at him before he closed the door to his office. He felt his alpha twist frantically.
What did that guy have that made his alpha go completely insane?
*I enjoy so much translating this book.* What does Harry have that makes Louis go mad?
This is all for Halloween my Suns, see you on Friday!
