Chapter 21

New York, United States.

Edmund Styles was walking through the streets of the great city of New York. He had traveled from Holmes Chapel for an important job interview that would help him get ahead. Being a man of few economic resources, he agreed to attend without thinking twice about his actions, he knew that he needed that job to be able to buy a house and a car, and to finally leave his parents' house to be the alpha everyone had expected him to be, and suddenly he bought the cheapest plane ticket he could find and flew to one of the most famous cities of America.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Styles.'' Greeted an alpha much older than him. He was wearing an expensive blue suit and in his hand he carried a Rolex. He shook Ed's hand and motioned for him to sit down. "It seems better to me if we review your resume. In this company we are looking for alphas willing to work and with a desire for entrepreneurship."

He reviewed some of the things that he said in that paper that Ed had done. He did not have any studies in prestigious schools nor did he have experience in the business area, but he could quickly learn anything. He only had experience working as a mechanic and as a cashier in some self-service stores. The alpha looked up from the paper and sighed. Ed immediately knew it was bad news.

"Edmund," he began, "it shows that you want to work and you seem to be a good man, but we are looking for people with degrees. You don't even have a degree in this, and I doubt very much that you can help us in the company."

"Sir, I promise you that I will learn things quickly. I can enter the university again to study business, and in time I will show you that I am an alpha worthy of employment. I am young and I still have a long way to go and..." The alpha raised his hand signaling him to be silent, the alpha clenched his jaw and looked down.

"I appreciate your visit, Mr. Styles." Edmund sighed and with a slight nod and a demotivated smile left the man's office.

What would he do now? He had spent half of the savings he had on that trip to New York and now he had to come back with no job and no money. He regretted every step he took. How had he been so naive to believe that they would give him a job in that company if he didn't even have money to buy an elegant suit? He left the building and walked the streets as he thought about what he should do. He didn't have too many options but he could make a plan. He could look for a temporary job in the city to get some money and not return empty handed or he could give up and wait for the day his parents kicked him out of the house.

And at that moment, his phone began to ring. He clumsily pulled it out of his pants and looked at the screen, it was his girlfriend, he sighed and answered the call.

"Hello beautiful. What are you doing, calling me from all the way there?" He said feigning joy, but a fearful cry from the other side of the line made him pale. "Jane? Are you OK?"

"Ed, we need to talk," the girl sobbed, "I... I'm..." Her crying was heartbreaking, and stopped her from finishing what she was about to say.

"What is it? Did something happen? Are you okay?" Ed's concern increased with each passing second and the cries of his partner didn't help much. After a few minutes the omega's voice was heard again.

"Ed, I'm pregnant... What are we going to do? You haven't even bitten me yet, and you don't have a job." Jane whimpered and the alpha's heart stopped for a moment. "How are we going to take care of a baby if we can't even take care of ourselves?"

Both remained silent for a few minutes, neither knew what to do. Their lives were ruined and, although they were overthinking the situation, they needed to plan what to do, because after all there was no turning back. They were going to be parents.

The alpha sighed and looked up at the sky, as if the answers would magically come to him.

"I need to think. I'll call you later."

With that said, the call ended and he closed his eyes. Now he not only had to get a job to live on his own. He had to get one to take care of the family that was about to be part of his life.

A man in a black suit sat next to him, on his hand he carried a rather peculiar ring as well as a black briefcase. Ed ignored him for a few seconds until he spoke.

"You have the money?" He asked, looking straight ahead. The alpha turned his head and looked at the man in confusion. Was he talking to him? "I don't have all day. Do you have the money or not?"

"You're talking to me?" The man looked at him surprised, and turned his head to both sides in search of something.

"Aren't you the one I should give this to?" He asked, pointing to the briefcase in his hand, Ed shook his head. "Damn, they told me they'd be here. I'm sorry, just pretend you never saw me."

The man stood up ready to leave, but there was something in Ed's eyes that caught his attention. Maybe it had been despair or sadness, he didn't know, but he turned around and looked at the alpha with an expression relaxed.

"What are you doing here? You have a British accent, are you visiting?"

"Something like that, yes." He replied wearily.

"Do you need a favour? Money? Drugs?... Omegas?" The alpha frowned and looked at the man with surprise. "Ask me what you need. I can help you. Don't worry, it will be your magical gift from your friend in New York."

Could this be a sign? Although Ed did not know that man, his obstinacy made him believe that it could be an opportunity to get ahead. What could he lose after all?

"In fact... I do need something." The alpha's gesture changed to a curious smile and he sat down next to him again.

"And what is it that you want?" He asked with interest.

"Money," he answered without further thinking, "I'm broke and my girlfriend is pregnant."

"How much are we talking about? One? Two?" Confusion washed over Ed's expression and the alpha rolled his eyes. "Millions, how many millions do you want?"

"Millions?" He exclaimed. "I don't want millions, maybe a few thousand... I could never settle a millionaire debt."

The man clucked his tongue and looked straight ahead as he shook his head from side to side.

"How about we make a deal?" He looked at him with mischievousness. "I lend you money per month. You can tell your girlfriend that it is your salary and you can even pretend that you work in the mornings, and when you think you don't need any more money I will give you the receipt and you will pay me off your debt."

That alpha explained in a calm voice, his gaze returned to Ed and he remained silently waiting for an answer. Several thoughts haunted the young alpha's mind, it didn't sound like the worst idea in the world. What if the man was dedicated to that? He made loans in a friendly way and he would only have to promise that he would pay. How difficult would that be?

"I don't have all day, I have other deliveries to make and... I just had the best idea in the world. What do you think if you help me to do small jobs in the UK? That way you'd help pay off your account and get out of debt faster." He offered, and after a few minutes of thinking about it, Ed finally spoke.

"I am in. What do I have to do?"

"Excellent. What a good decision you just made. We'll keep in touch, English man"

Saying that, the alpha got up and walked away from the place.

What have you gotten yourself into, Edmund?

A week later he was already at home. That mysterious man had sent him a plane ticket to the place where he was staying, mysterious. They had discussed on the phone that Ed would attend one of the properties of that alpha, whose last name began with C, to receive instructions on the work he would do to pay off his debt. All this seemed too strange to Ed, but he did not ask many questions. He still had a family to support.

Jane's parents were more than angry, their daughter was not even bitten and was already expecting a baby, but they agreed that they would marry so that she would at least have the last name Styles, as it would be considered a shame for the omega's family that the puppy had the mother's last name. They moved into a modest house in a not very prestigious area, and Ed went in the mornings for packages he didn't know what they contained to make deliveries to alphas or betas in dark alleys, growing suspicious of what he had gotten himself into.

Months later Stella Styles was born, a beautiful baby with the most beautiful almond eyes they have ever seen. The alpha was feeling like the luckiest man alive the moment he saw his daughter for the first time. No matter what happened, Edmund promised himself that he would take care of that little girl with his life. Jane was more than happy with her new family, her puppy in her arms and an alpha who cared for her daughter, but she felt something was missing.

A bite on her neck.

In all that time Ed had refused to bite her, he made excuses like they were too young, but for the omega that was ridiculous. They already had a family. Why wait?

One morning Ed arrived at the huge building owned by C to have the usual packages delivered, but that day he was determined to ask once and for all what they contained and why they were worth so much money. Who was that man? What merchandise did he sell?

He walked into C's office and sat across from him to talk. The alpha was wearing a suit and he looked impeccable, with his hair slicked back and all of his clothing perfectly arranged. He radiated power and richness, Ed thought that one day he could be sitting there instead of him.

"Did you want to talk to me, Styles?" C asked and a shiver ran down Ed's spine.

"Yes, Mr. C. I hope I don't sound indiscreet or even nosy, but I couldn't help noticing that those packages I deliver as discreetly as possible are worth a lot of money, and I'd like to know what I'm delivering. What do you sell?"

"Ah, dear Edmund," C sighed with a mischievous smile. "If I tell you what we sell, you won't be able to get out of this. You know? I was thinking of letting you go once you paid off your debt, but if you insist so much. I'll tell you."

The alpha snapped his fingers and two betas entered the office with a package like the ones that Ed delivered. He was afraid of losing everything he had worked on. He was aware that Mr. C was very powerful, having him as an enemy could be the worst mistake of his life.

They left the package on the desk and C took a knife out of his pocket. Without thinking twice, he stabbed the bag and a very fine white powder came out of it. Ed immediately realized what it was, cocaine.

"You see, Edmund. We are dedicated to the sale and trafficking of many things in America. Everything you can imagine, drugs, weapons, omegas, especially male ones. Did you know that it is extremely rare to see male omegas? Although the chances of them being born have increased, they are still very few, especially adults, and the alphas in power are more than willing to pay millions for a little omega from thirteen to twenty-five years. We have been trying to enter the European market for a while now, especially the one here in the United Kingdom, but you will understand that it is... complicated. There is a very powerful man occupying this territory, but we are already taking care of finding a way to get rid of him."

"Am I getting involved with the mafia? The American mafia?" Ed asked, scared. Mr. C nodded with a smile on his face, as if he had been asked if he wanted to go out for ice cream.

"That's right. Don't worry Ed, you're on our side as long as you stay loyal to Killian Calder, got it?"

Ed nodded scared, the last thing he wanted was to piss off a mafia crown. He was screwed.

With that clear, the alpha got up and walked away from the place.

What have you gotten yourself into, Edmund?
