FORTY SIX: Key

Dating Natsuo Todoroki was pretty nice.

He never tried to push me for anything, he made me genuinely smile, Suzu seemed to approve of him. Plus, the cherry on top, he wasn't a hero. Just a big, huggable teddy bear that wanted nothing more than my smile and my happiness.

But he still wasn't...

"That motherfucking, shit spewing, ass faced, pigeon dicked son of a fucking BITCH!" My quirk kind of seeped into my angered shriek as I hoyed the scrunched up papers over the kitchen counter, kicking the cupboard in a fit. Natsuo sprung up from his place on the couch, looking startled by my outburst.

"Hey, hey hey hey...What's the matter, Sugar?" He kept his distance, knowing I wasn't finished throwing my tantrum.
"I OWE YOU! ONE DIVORCE!" I bellowed, aggressively gesturing to the discarded sheets of paper before beginning to pace back and forth. "I'm gonna kill him, Natsuo...I'm gonna go to prison for murdering that fucking asshole..."

Sighing, my new boyfriend rounded the counter, backing me into the corner between the fridge and dishwasher so I had no choice but to accept his embrace.
"No, because that would mean I wouldn't get to do this, and that would seriously suck." He reasoned jestingly, turning serious the second he realised I wasn't finding it funny. "He still cares about you. It's probably just him trying to avoid it because he doesn't want it to be real. If you want, I'll try to talk to him. Man to man, nice and civil."

Ugh, you don't deserve this, Natsuo...

Shaking my head, I buried my nose in the divot of his chest, groaning loudly.
"No, it's not your issue...I have to talk to him about the apartment and shit, anyway, so I'll just kick his ass into submission..." The thought of seeing him face to face again make me feel sick, but I knew it had to happen at some point. I was also starting to believe that Endeavor knew something I didn't. He'd been acting awfully odd ever since he had been given that strange book. "I should get going, anyway...I wanted to go pick up our intern and give him some more field time."

Understanding, Natsuo pressed a kiss to my forehead, his thumb rubbing against the sleek material of my costume shoulder.
"Yeah, I have class today, too. I'll head home and shower now so I won't be late." It all felt so natural in a cliche way. I couldn't really fault Natsuo at all, which made it seem more like I had fallen into some kind of perfect romance fiction.

It's strange...but he's good for me...

"Don't worry about it..." I murmured, pulling myself up to his lips using his shoulders as leverage. Short and sweet, but nothing more. "Use the shower here and chill out. It's closer to your campus, anyway. I'll leave you the spare key." His expression softened, and he squeezed me tighter, rocking us side to side in a lulling rhythm.

"Key to your place already? I must be the luckiest guy in all of Japan." He chuckled, rubbing his nose to mine before letting me go, leaning in for another quick peck. "Stay safe, and don't hesitate to call me if you need anything, alright, Sugar?"

Sugar? Too sweet...but...so is he, so it's okay..?

Smiling, I nodded, pulling away and locating the key I had promised. Then, I made my way to the balcony, activating my quirk. The sky was a deep, murky grey, so my wings appeared just as dark, twisted and bat-like when I gave them a few warm-up flaps.
"God, you're gorgeous..." My head whipped around to find Natsuo leaning against the door frame, hooded eyes soft as they swept over my form.

"You may need to get those eyes of yours checked. I'd gladly trade quirks with you any day of the week." I scoffed, pausing for a moment. "Hey, what even is your quirk, anyway? You've never told me." Raising a brow, Natsuo stepped out onto the balcony, lifting his arm and tilting his hand downwards. Tiny, sparkling snowflakes began to drift from his fingertips, swirling around slowly until they melted into the ground.

"It isn't anything special, just kinda pretty. I can also cool my body down, which is great for when I work out. Definitely not good enough for what my asshole father wanted." He chuckled, though I caught the bitterness at the end.
"I like it. It's kinda like Ilsa, from Frosted. That kids movie." I pointed out, reaching out to give his much cooler hand a squeeze. "I gotta go, but I'll see you later?"

He lifted my knuckles to his lips, pressing a lingering kiss before releasing me and stepping back over the threshold to indoors.
"Absolutely. Have a good day, Sugar." With that, I took off, a strange bubbly feeling in my chest, which wasn't completely good.

This is good for me...He is good for me...Keigo isn't...

It was a quick trip to Yuuei, and I didn't even bother checking in, landing right at the front stoop of Heights Alliance. Several knocks later, I came face to face with some short little guy that looked like he had some nasty discolored tumors on his head.
"Is this the rapture?! An angel, here to take me to heaven?!" He gasped, and I pulled the most disturbed face I could without coming across as rude.

"Uh, no, sorry, bud...Is Tokoyami here?" I irked, stepping around him and making myself at home. There were a few students pottering around in the common area, but I made a beeline towards one in particular. "Jiro, hey! Long time no see!" The girl looked up, brightening once she recognised my face.
"Oh, Songbird!" She gave me a one-armed hug, glaring daggers at the small purple boy, who backed right off in fear. "How are you? I, uh, heard about what happened..."

Yeah, everybody has...

Waving her off, I glanced away, hoping I wasn't showing any upset.
"I'm fine, I'm fine...Uh, Tokoyami, is he hanging around? I wanted to take him out today, seeing as he hasn't had much work to do." I explained, brushing a loose strand of (H/C) behind my ear.
"I think he's just in the kitchen. Want me to grab him for you?" She offered, and I shrugged my shoulders, making a quick double take as I thought I saw a rabbit dash under one of the armchairs.

"Uh...how about you lead the way..?" She seemed content with that idea, and I followed her through the main area to the kitchen around the corner, where a few other students, including my avain son, were eating breakfast.
"Oi, chew with your mouth closed, ypu dweeb! There's a lady present!" Jiro smacked a familiar blond up the side of the head, and he nearly choked on his spoon.

"Hey, what the he-" When he turned, his cheeks turned a little pink, and as he smiled a drizzle of milk seeped from the edge of his mouth. "Hey, it's the angel!" Before I had the chance to respond a blur of black came right at me, and the familiar, soft chill enveloped me.
"My favourite pretty lady! I thought you disowned me!"

Dark Shadow flopped over me like a blanket of darkness, and I smiled, leaning my head into it's shadowed body.
"Sorry, Shad...I've been caught up in a few things. Morning, Tokoyami." The student wiped his beak with his sleeve, rising from his seat and bowing politely.
"Good morning, (L/N). To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Formal, as always. I missed him.

"Oh, I was just in the neighbourhood and wanted to know if you'd like to do a patrol with me today? Thought I'd pick up Hawks' slack and make it up to you." I explained, all the while enjoying Dark Shadow's affection. Even though it was hard to tell, Tokoyami was excited, and he hurried to place his empty plate in the sink.
"I would be delighted to, (L/N). Thank you for thinking of me." He said with a bit more pep. "Come, Dark Shadow. I must change."

The sentient quirk groaned as it returned to Tokoyami's chest, and I was suddenly left alone with the other students, which included Jiro, the desperate blond and a boy with rather interesting elbows.
"Hey, Songbird, what's it like, being married to the number two hero? Bet it's super exciting!" Elbow-dude asked me with starry eyes, but it made me feel like crap. I knew it wasn't his fault, seeing as it wasn't completely public yet, but it still stung.

"It was pretty awful, to be honest, kid. Nearing the end of a pain-in-the-ass divorce as we speak." I revealed much too casually, and the blond I finally remembered as Kaminari choked again.
"Wait, for real?! Didn't you two only just tie the knot?!" He spluttered, earning another smack from Jiro, as did the ravonet.
"You can't just bring that kind of shit up, you idiots!" She hissed, turning to me and bowing her head. "I'm really sorry, Sero and Kaminari barely share a braincell between them."

Mood.

Sweeping my (H/C) hair back, I shook my head, showing them that it was alright, even though it kind of wasn't.
"Nah, it's cool. I plan on making it public eventually, anyway. Things happened and it wasn't really something we could bounce back from. I've moved on and he's always away for work nowadays, so it's not so bad."

The boy called Sero leaned back in his chair, brushing a crushed piece of Grand Torin'O cereal from his shirt.
"Moved on, aye? Who's the lucky guy? Another hero?" This time, I stopped Jiro from smacking him, leaning in closer and staring directly into his eyes.
"I really don't think that's any of your business, kid, but no, he's not a hero. That type is a complete turn-off after the crap that bird-brained lunatic put me through."

But yet here I am, still wondering whether I made the right decision or not...

As Sero began to stammer out an apology, more people entered the kitchen, but this time I was a little surprised.
"Oh, it's you." Aizawa deadpanned once he realised it was me, but I didn't take much notice of him. I was more captivated by the small child clinging to his pants leg.

"In the flesh..." I murmured, turning completely and crouching down to be level with the little girl. "Hey there, sweetheart. What's your name?" Oh, she was a darling little thing, and she nervously peered up at the rugged teacher before settling her big, rosy eyes back on me.
"I'm Eri, nice to meet you, Miss."

She's so precious...

Was that what I could have had? Would my little girl have had such bright, curious eyes, and clung to me just like this one was to Aizawa? It really hurt, but at the same time I was in love.
"Such a pretty name! You can call me (Y/N)." I smiled, genuinely, and nearly burst out crying when she reciprocated.
"Oh, I remember you! You're that bird lady I saw on television! You were working with that other bird man and the big fire bully!"

Making a mental note to tell Endeavor he was to be forever known as the big fire bully, I looked up to Aizawa, who didn't seem too phased by my interaction with the kid.
"Sorry to barge in unnannounced. I wanted to take Tokoyami for a bit, if there's no problem. Hawks hasn't been giving him enough attention lately."

"That's fine by me. It'll do him good." Aizawa watched Eri skitter off to the table to ask for some cereal, and he surprisingly helped me to my feet, making sure nobody else was listening before leaning in. "How are you holding up? Recovery Girl told me about everything."

So much for patient confidentiality...

Sighing, I eyed the kids in the room before glancing back to him, screwing up my face.
"One mishap away from diving into the office shredder, to be honest. Everything would be a heck of a lot easier if Hawks just signed the damn papers already." The man nodded, looking completely unconvinced.
"Would it, though?"

Narrowing my (E/C) eyes, I wanted to snap at him, but I knew he wasn't actively trying to piss me off. He cared, in his own, hobo-ish way.
"Well, that and if Best Jeanist would come back..." I admitted, flinching as my phone began to buzz in my utility belt. Singalling him to hold on a moment, I answered, stepping out of the room. "Hello? (L/N) speaking."

"Hello, Ms Songbird! My name is Takeda Himari, I'm calling from Herogue Magazine! How are you today?" The chipper voice sang from the other end, and I cringed. I had no idea how they had gotten my personal number.
"Uh, alright, I guess? May I ask why you're calling?"

Leaning against the wall, I could hear Takeda whispering before she replied.
"We were wondering if you could come in for a shoot and interview today? We've been calling your agency for the past few weeks but nobody ever got back to us! We're just dying to help the world get to know you!"

Great, just what I needed. Spotlight. I wanted to refuse, but I knew I needed to act the part of a hero. People trusted what they knew, right?
"I suppose I can swing by after morning patrol. Would eleven thirty be alright?"

"Oh, yes, of course! Thank you, Ms. Songbird! This is gonna be a killer interview!"

***I had no idea how to end this so...nyeh. i was going to include the interview but then it got too long so? Filler?? I guess???

Also, sorry, but I'm really mad that Zeno Robinson is voicing Hawks in the dub. I'm going to sue if he butchers my son.

Next Time: Take a Stab at It***
