ELEVEN: Relief

*Day of Exam*

Okay...offensive...sure...but rescue?! We didn't practice this shit!

I was currently soaring above the wreckage of the examination arena; muttering insults directed at the feathered pro under my breath. Sure, I'd seen him rescue a few people here and there when I'd tagged along on some calls, but we hadn't actually trained for it.
"SAVE YOURSELVES, YOU MORONS!" My ears twitched as I heard a vicious scream from below, and decided to check it out. My eyes fell upon three students and a pair of injured civilians; muttering amongst themselves.
"Bakugou, what the hell, man?!" A red-head was gawking at a seething blond; looking extremely taken aback along with his other companion.

"NEGATIVE POINTS!" The duo; stuck in the crevice below, shouted in unison. They only seemed to make the boy angrier. Before he had the chance to make things worse for himself, I swooped down and landed behind the markers; forcing a smile onto my face.
"I'm here to help! Are you injured at all?" I asked them sweetly. The woman was clutching her arm to her chest, and they both looked pretty battered.

Realistic makeup skills...

"I think my arm is broken...but apart from that, we're just a bit shaken up..." The lady explained; her voice so fake that it made me nauseous.
"Don't worry, ma'am, I'm going to get you to safety." I proceeded to pick her up as gently as possible; internally screeching at her weight before turning my attention to the man and activating my vocal quirk. "Sir, please attempt to climb out for me~" It came out in a sing-song tone; sweet and subtle, and he nodded slowly in acceptance.
"Yes, Miss." He droned; proceeding to wander over to the side of the pit. I peered up at the boys above; ignoring the hateful glare I received from the bombastic student.
"Give him a hand, please, boys!" I asked with a cheeky grin; lifting myself and the woman off the ground with my bright, glowing wings.
"You're so pretty! S..sure!" The second blond; clad in black and white, nodded excitedly with starry eyes.
"Can do!" The toothy red-head added.

"Aren't you a little fucking old to be taking this exam?!" I'd had a feeling that the angry little boy wouldn't keep his trap shut, but I knew I had to keep my composure. I needed to keep my points.
"Probably. Aren't you a little young, first year?" I teased; adjusting the position of my wings so that light shone into his blazing crimson eyes. I flew off before he had the chance to snap back at me, and I was pretty sure I heard faint pops and crackles as I moved my focus to the woman in my arms. "Sorry about that, ma'am! You're safe now! I've got you! Please tell me if you're concerned about the height!"

Wow...customer service voice, or what?

"Glad you shut that brat up. Such a rude child!" She muttered; performance slipping. I kept reassuring her as I flew to the medical station; quickly informing the 'nurse' of her condition before jetting back into the sky. I couldn't wait for it all to be over. I'd only rescued three people so far, and I knew time was ticking away. I needed to up my game or it was over for Hawks' solo career.

You dumb duck...Why'd you have to put so much faith in me?!

Another cry for help sounded out below, and I ended up outside of a collapsed building. It had formed some kind of cavern; rubble barely holding it up. I spotted another exam-taker standing before the entrance; concern all over his...

Bird face?!

"You okay there, kid?" I found myself approaching him; wings folded against my back, far enough away to make sure I wouldn't burn myself. The avian-faced boy turned to me; a little startled, before his face became neutral.
"Y..yes. I'm fine..." He mumbled; polite yet distant.
"Then why the hesitation?" I tried to put a stop to my mind making horrid jokes about his rather gothic getup, but it was harder than I had thought.
"My quirk...tends to get a little out of control when it comes to the veil of darkness..." He said solemnly; and just before I could reply, something began to ooze from his chest.
"Just do it!" The sentient form of ebony haze groaned loudly; stiffening as it laid vibrant topaz eyes on me. "ANGEL LADY!" I sweatdropped, as did the student, as his quirk lurched closer; studying me excitedly.
"Dark Shadow...please control yourself..." He muttered; running his hand over his face.
"Well...why don't we go in together? Teamwork, ya know?" I suggested out of the blue; unsure why it even crossed my mind. "I'm (L/N) (Y/N). Songbird." I held out my hand, and he took it lightly; a polite shake, indeed.
"Tokoyami Fumikage. Tsukuyomi." He introduced himself, and then nodded to the demonic entity that hovered around my own quirk. "And this is Dark Shadow."

"So...bright..." It seemed to be both scared and intrigued by my wings, but I didn't really pay him much mind.
"Nice to make your acquaintance. So, shall we? I'm pretty good with the dark...I have a similar...less lively issue..."

Why am I telling him this?! He's probably gonna freak out...

"Alright...but I warn you...It may get rather acrimonious if we succumb..." He had such a poetic edge to his voice, I wanted to just stick him up on a stage and make him speak for hours. I ushered him inside; holding my breath as my wings began to warp and change from blinding white to sickly black. Tokoyami watched the entire time; not even blinking once they had finally reached the peak of their gnarled glory.
"Not creeped out?" I questioned bitterly; placing my hand against the edge of Dark Shadow's quivering, growing outline.
"Not at all. I find it rather beguiling, actually. From lightness to darkness, the beauty of one never vacillates..." I didn't exactly understand a word of it, but I could tell it was a compliment. The boy seemed rather stunned; in his own, stoic way, that I was managing to keep his quirk quite calm. I could feel it trying to swell and twist under my hand, but I continued to stay close to it. It felt similar to myself.
"H..help! Hello? P..please! Anybody?!" The cries for help were close now, but it was so dark. I hated that my quirk had to become so useless in the shadows.
"We're here! Please, if you can, keep calling out! It'll help us reach you, Sir!" I responded; free hand cupped around my mouth to project my voice.
"What a mad banquet of darkness..." Tokoyami whispered to himself, and I almost choked on my own spit.

This kid...I wanna take him home so I can make Hawks' brain explode..!

"I'm here! Over here! Please...my legs...they're crushed! I c..can't move!" I had to admit, this man's acting was above the others. He sounded frantic, and it seemed to light something inside the both of us.
"(L/N), I believe he's over in this direction." Tokoyami announced; his gloved hand taking my wrist and guiding me closer towards the voice. "My apologies. I just do not wish for us to be separated." I smiled a little; not minding that his quirk had also decided to latch itself onto my back, between my bat-like wings.
"No problem. Lead the way, Shakespeare!" I heard him heave a sigh at my lighthearted teasing, but we continued on; following the pleading shouts before, finally, we found the poor man.
"Th..thank god! G..get me out! I can't feel my l..legs!" He sobbed; making my throat seize. I scanned the scene; making sure that there wasn't a risk of further collapse if anything was touched.
"Tsukuyomi...can you get Dark Shadow to lift the section of the roof that's pinning him down? I'll get him out of there, then we can get him to the medical station..." I said; almost questioning him.
"Of course. Dark Shadow, move it!" He ordered his quirk, and the sentient beast shot over to the concrete slab; lifting it with a strange, strained grunt. It seemed like Tokoyami was feeling some of the weight, too. "Please hurry, (L/N)."
"On it!" I swooped in to help the man; ever so carefully lifting him into my arms and carrying him to safety. The chemical scent of fake blood made my nose screw up, but I tried my best not to let it show. "Sir, we've got you! Apart from your legs, do you have any other injuries?" The man groaned in my grip; shaking his head with a few jerks.
"N..no...Just my legs..." He replied with a few well-placed coughs.
"Do you need assistance in carrying?" Tokoyami offered; Dark Shadow, who was still remaining calm and in control, was holding his wispy arms out in offering.
"Yes, please...I need to work on my physical strength..." I admitted with an awkward chuckle. "Sir, I'm going to pass you over to Tsukuyomi, now. He can carry you to safety." I passed him over gently; making sure that neither of us bumped his injuries or caused him any discomfort. We proceeded to make our way back into the sunlight; my quirk shifting back into its daytime state the moment the rays of light began to reach into the mouth of the wreckage.
"I must thank you for aiding me, (L/N). Never before have I seen Dark Shadow act so obedient." The ravonette raven-boy said with a slight smile; his quirk nodding eagerly.
"No sweat. You take this guy to the check point, and I'll go see who else needs to be rescued. Good luck, man!" I gave them a little wave and launched back into the sky; immediately quirking a brow at the mayhem I could see over by the medical station.

Adding a battle scenario, too? Shit...they're really trying to pick us off one by one...

The last twenty minutes of the exam really kicked my ass. I managed to save eight more people; only citizens with minor injuries, but I ended up being bailed up by one of Gang Orca's sidekicks. It wasn't that I couldn't take him on. No, far from it. I had him down and out in only a few minutes. It was the fact that I ended up being blown away in a startling gust of powerful wind. Flaming wind. My body was lightly roasted; singed and steaming, by the time the end buzzer sounded. I was pissed off, to say the least. I surely hadn't rescued enough people to pass, and that meant I'd failed Hawks. I smashed my fist into the dirt; cussing the fuck out of myself through my teeth. Even after our awkward encounter at the cabin, I still wanted to make him proud. Maybe even as proud as I wanted to make my dear Akitsugu. Maybe.

"Ms (L/N)...do you need some assistance..?" I raised my head and met the kindly eyes of Tokoyami, who had his hand extended towards me. Behind him stood two other students; one with an oddly shaped head, and the other with lips even I could be jealous of.

"Uh...yeah...thanks, man...Sorry, I just...don't think I did too well...I let someone down..." I admitted with a sad smile; using his hand to help pull me to my feet.
"Tokoyami said you were awesome, though! Well...something like...Her skills are elegant and urban...or something..." The thick-lipped boy piped up; his smile almost blinding.
"Urbane..." Tokoyami mumbled under his breath.
"I'm Sato Rikido, by the way! And this is Koda!" He motioned to the meek boy behind him, who gave me a timid wave. I waved back; my smile warming just a tad.

"(L/N) (F/N)." I responded as I brushed the ash and dust from my costume.
"Who, if I may ask, have you let down, (L/N)? In my opinion, you did rather well." Tokoyami queried as we began to slowly walk to the gathering area to receive our results. I bit my lip as I thought about how disappointed Hawks would be. All of his hard work was going to be flushed down the shitter thanks to my poor display of heroism.

"Uh, my mentor...if I can even call him that? Pro Hero Hawks..." I didn't miss the way the impassive boy seemed to perk up a little when I spoke that name.
"Hawks? He's your mentor?" He asked with a little more excitement in his voice; surprising even his classmates. I shrugged my shoulders as though it was no big deal.

"Yeah. He picked me up off the streets a few months ago and quite literally took me under his wing." I chuckled; thanking Koda with a sweet smile as he held the door open for us.

"I admit, I was rather disappointed when I didn't receive an internship offer from his office after the sports festival. May I ask what he is like?" Tokoyami continued; leading me over to a group which was no doubt more students from his class.
"Well, I'm the only other person who seems to be working with him at the moment...He's..." I paused; my mind swirling with possible ways to describe the rambunctious hero. "...A bit of a prick...but...he's also really sweet...He jokes around a lot...and eats twice as much as a regular person...but he always gets the job done..." I found myself smiling; imagining how he'd be grinning cheesily if he ever heard the way I was complimenting him.

You dumb drumstick...

"Yeah...he's pretty great..." I sighed softly.

"Perhaps I will get to meet him one day." Tokoyami hummed; stopping a few feet away from his group.
"Look forward to it...I'll tell the little shit that I quit if he doesn't take you on." I shot him a genuine grin as his eyes widened in surprise, before he quickly composed himself.

"W..well...thank you, (L/N). That is eminently kind of you." He returned my smile to a smaller degree before my view of him was cut off by black and blond.
"You're that super pretty lady who shut Bakugou down before! Holy shit, you're gorgeous!" The boy exclaimed; his hands in fists against his chest. "What are my chances of getting your number?"

Slim to none, blondie...

"Sorry, kid...but I think I'm a little out of your age bracket...Try another reader, buddy..." I gave his head a few rough pats above the black zigzag marking; quickly whipping my attention to the display screen when it buzzed to life. I don't think I had ever attempted to read anything as fast as I had in those moments; almost giving myself an anyurism. "Oh, congrats, Shakespeare! You passed!" I smiled as I continued to read down the list.

"Congratulations to you too, (L/N). You also passed." He replied; and I stopped reading to whip my head around and stare at him like the dumbass I was.

"Uh, come again?"

No way...I didn't...did I?

"You passed, and I congratulated you." Tokoyami repeated; an amused smirk seeming to play at his beaked mouth. It took a few extra seconds to process what he had said before I jumped into the air; throwing my arms around him and swinging the poor boy in circles.
"Fuck yes!" I cheered; coughing awkwardly once I realised I was basically choking the poor boy and stepped back. "Sorry, man..." He adjusted the collar of his cape; clearing his throat and casting his gaze to the side.

"No harm done, (L/N)..." He said in a dignified tone, but I had already begun to race off.
"I'll see you at your internship, Shakespeare! Keep on brooding, buddy!" I called out over my shoulder on my way to find my winged freakazoid.

*Hawks POV*

I totally wasn't nervous. Not at all. Not one bit.

I'd surpassed nerves the moment the starting buzzer for the first test sounded.

I knew it was only a matter of time until (Y/N) came to find me; either with good news or the worst in history. I was trying to stay positive. I believed in her completely, but I couldn't shake that niggling feeling at the back of my mind. I really didn't want to work with Best Jeanist. The mere thought of having quaffed hair shook me to the core.

Calm down, man...She's passed...there's no way she didn't...

The second she came into view, my heart stopped beating. Not because I thought she failed, though. No, I knew for a fact she had passed by the way her face was nearly being torn apart by her outrageously huge smile.

That is what made me nearly die on the spot. The memory of her lips against mine was fresh and feverish; making me force the sudden build up of saliva back down my throat. Her hips rolling waves of pleasure against my own. The way her (E/C) eyes devoured me with such fearsome lust. She was driving me crazy from merely existing.

"Hawks, you motherfucking pigeon dick!" Her excited yelling tore through the courtyard as she raced to close the distance between us; quite literally mowing down an unsuspecting Aizawa in the process. "I FUCKING PASSED!"

Look at her...she's perfect...

Taking a chance; a shot in the dark, I held my arms out. I wanted to hold her and feel her body bristle with excitement, but I knew that it was a longshot. After upsetting her that evening at the cabin, I wasn't sure if she'd ever accept me in any intimate form. Surprising me, she leapt into my open arms and hugged me tighter than I thought possible. Using my wings, I lifted us up into the air with a little spin; squeezing her close and laughing gleefully.

"That's my girl, Sunshine!" I set us both back down on the ground, but she didn't let go. Her face was buried in my chest, and I ran my gloved hand through her mess of (H/C) hair, which was slightly sooty. "You good?" She nodded against me; arms tightening just a little bit more.

"Y..yeah...just...relieved..." She chuckled in a strained voice, which still sounded beautiful to me.
"Relieved? About what? That it's over?" I asked as I tried to pull her back so I could look at her. WHen I managed to step back, I tensed as I noticed the tears welling in her eyes.

"That I...didn't let you down..." She admitted; face growing red and taking on a frustrated expression. "J..just...yeah! Anyway! You owe me dinner! I got my ass beat just so you wouldn't have to be BJ's bitch...so spoil me, you undercooked nugget!" She shoved away from me and strutted off; or, at least she tried to. Her slight limp wasn't really helping her tough guy act. I smiled to myself as I began to stroll after her; pocketing my hands and watching the back of her head a few feet ahead.

You really are the sun, you stubborn little girl...We're gonna work well together...Just you wait...
