Prom Night (Part One)

~Author's Note~

Omg I'm really excited for this chapter. I'm sorry it was split into two parts, but I didn't want it to get too long. This song works okay with the chapter, but I couldn't really think of anything better. But I do love this chapter because my real life was a not gay version of this and I swear I still cry with joy when I think of that night. Anyway, I'll shut up now.

~Ian's POV~

Anthony and I sit next to our small group of friends, discussing random stuff that friends discuss, when I notice Rhonda pull Anthony aside to talk to him privately. As the curious person I am, I lean a bit closer to them in order to make out a bit of what they're saying.

"Please, Anthony!" I hear Rhonda beg. "It'll make him really happy! And it's your last chance to do anything with him. It's all over after this year."

Anthony sighs a little. He speaks much quieter than Rhonda had, and I have to lean a bit closer to hear. "I don't know, Rhonda. Won't that be a bit gay?"

At this, I back up and pretend that I've heard nothing. The rest of my friends don't notice me attempting to eavesdrop. I walk over to Rhonda and Anthony and sit next to them on the hard, uncomfortable bleachers seats. Our gym coach told us that we were going to play a "rousing game of dodgeball", but half the class ended up sitting out, so now we have a free day.

"Watcha guys talking about?" I interrupt. I figure that Rhonda is trying to convince Anthony to ask me to prom, since she's the only one who knows my feelings towards him. I appreciate her help, but I don't want him to go with me if it's a burden.

"Oh... Uh nothing," Anthony stutters. Rhonda nods. I instinctively raise one eyebrow in suspicion.

Rhonda sighs. "Look, Ian. I'll tell you later." I look to Anthony's face of concern and back to Rhonda's face, that says, "please go away".

I nod. Guess I'll just have to wait.

~Anthony's POV~

I'm back home now, pacing back and forth. Does Ian even want to go with me? I mean, it seems kinda gay to ask a guy to prom, right? Well, not if I just ask him as friends. I don't even know!

I hear a buzz coming from my bed. I pick up my phone and see a text from Ian.

So are you gonna ask me or not?

I sigh. I have no idea how to reply to him. I don't know if he wants me to or not!

Um... Do you want me to?

I put my phone back on the bed and return to my pacing. A couple minutes later, I get another text.

You honestly have no idea how happy it would make me.

I pause a minute. Me asking him would make him happy?

Really?

Another buzz.

I can't even describe how happy I would be, honestly.

I smile a bit to myself. To think, me asking someone to prom would make them indescribably happy. And every other year, I thought prom was the dumbest thing in the world.

Ok..
Well, do you want to uh, go to prom with me?
You know, as friends.

I can almost feel Ian's smile through the phone.

Yes. Yes, absolutely :)

~Ian's POV~

He asked me. Anthony Padilla asked me to prom.

I don't even care that he asked me over text message. All I care is that he asked me. He asked me.

Today is so far, the best day of my life.

I lay on my bed, crying tears of joy. The boy I love, yes love, is going to take me out to have the best day of my life. I'm dreading it, what with all the decisions and stuff, but I'm also more excited for that night than I've ever been for anything.

Rhonda
He asked me :')

I daydream about the night when I'll ask him to dance, and in the middle of a slow song, I'll tell that I love him and he'll be shocked and probably won't ever talk to me again but he'll have had so much that night that he won't care.

I don't think about what will happen after he tells me he never wants to see me again and how he'll walk out of my life forever the very next day. But honestly, I've had the need to tell him for awhile now, and as seniors, we were probably never going to see each other again anyway. Knowing that he knows I love him will make the pain a tiny bit more bearable.

I wipe up the last of my happy tears and head downstairs for dinner.

As I'm walking, my phone buzzes with a message from Rhonda.

OH MY GOD! I'm SO going to dress you up all fancy that night. ;P

I chuckle a bit.

You'd better ;3

~Anthony's POV~

"You asked him over text!?" Rhonda screams at me as our gym class runs around the track (except us, of course, because we're lazy assholes who don't feel like running).

I shrug. "Well I mean, what was I supposed to do? He wasn't with me at the time, jeez!" I throw my hands up in annoyance.

"Well, you live literally right across the street from him, so you could've asked him then. Or just waited until the next time you saw him, and you see him every day."

"Well sorry, I've never asked anyone to a dance before," I reply, rolling my eyes playfully.

Rhonda rolls her eyes back. "Well, you're going to ask him right."

"Huh?"

"You're going to ask him. Today. In person. It doesn't even have to be in front of people. Just ask him, ok? Please."

I groan. "But whyyyyyy?" I whine.

"Because he really wants to go and I really want this experience to be special for him."

"Then why don't you ask him?"

Rhonda raises an eyebrow. "He uh... I thought that maybe he should go with his best friend instead of me. You really do mean a lot to him, Anthony."

I blush a little and give a slight smile. "Alright," I say in defeat. "I'll ask Ian to prom. In person."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ian and I only share two classes on our schedule: gym and choir (yes, we're both in choir, don't question it). I have to find time to ask Ian to the prom in choir, since gym is already over.
I'm nervous, but also a bit excited to ask someone to prom. In middle school, I dreamed of how I would ask my date to prom, and now that stupid little fantasy was coming true.
As I walk into the choir room, a wave of terror washes over me. I'm not afraid of asking Ian or having him reject me because he already said yes to me. I'm afraid of the looks I'll get. Being gay is frowned upon here, and me asking a guy to prom really isn't exactly the straightest thing I've done.
As I begin walking down the steps, I spot Ian in his chair and the fear I felt before disappears. Fuck other people. This is for Ian.
I see Rhonda urge me on and I kneel down to his size beside him.
"Anthony?..." Ian questions my actions and a crowd gathers.
I don't think I'm brave enough and almost chicken out. But then I look up at Ian and take a deep breath. "Do you want to go to prom with me?"
Everyone around us gasps and looks to Ian. Even the choir director looks surprised. Ian's jaw is a bit agape, but I also see the tears in his eyes and I know how happy I've made him.
"S-sure," he chokes out, clearly not wanting to embarrass me. I smile and some of the girls surrounding us, including Rhonda, squeal in slight. The other boys just walk away, shocked, and the girls who aren't fangirling fold their arms over their chest with a newfound hatred for Ian and I.
I quickly stand up and walk back to my seat, a huge blush forming on my face. The fangirls surround Ian and I can tell that he tries his best not to look back at me the rest of class.
~Ian's POV~
~Time Skip~
Holy shit.
It's here.
The night I've been waiting for for three weeks has finally arrived.
Today, I'm going to get my suit from the tailor's, then I'm heading over to Rhonda's so she can get me ready. Finally, tonight, I'm going to be in Anthony's arms as a slow song plays around us.
I couldn't be more excited.
"You ready to go, Ian?" My mom asks. She's the one driving me around today since my car is in the shop after the wreck I had last week.
I nod and pick up the stuff I'm taking. A bag for my clothes after I change, hair supplies, deodorant and cologne, and whatever else I need for tonight.
My mom nods. "Good. Now, let's go. The tailor wanted your suit picked up by one."
The suit is a black satin with a blue tie and nice, blue dress shoes. Anthony and I are matching tonight, so he's going to be wearing a blue suit with a black tie and shoes. Really, it must've cost our parents a fortune, but they said that us going to prom was worth it.
"Ian, you're going to love it," my mom says.
I grin at her. "I know."
Once we arrive at Rhonda's, my mom hugs me, which is something she claims is to be saved for special moments. "You're growing up too fast, Ian," she says, shaking her head.
I roll my eyes. "Mom."
She laughs. "Send me pictures!" She shouts as she drives off. I chuckle, rolling my eyes again.
Rhonda greets me at the door, and immediately, we get to work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Okay, so your hair is like, really long. What do you want me to do with it?" Rhonda asks me. I'm currently sitting on her pink bed in her pink room getting my hair done as she chews a piece of gum.

I shrug. "I dunno. Can't you just leave it as usual?"

Rhonda shakes her head. "It's prom night and your usual hair is a mess. I could give you a perm," she suggests.

I laugh. "Um, no thanks."

She shrugs. "Suit yourself. Oh hey, how about some curls? Just a little bit," she tries. I roll my eyes.

"No curls, Rhonda. Just let my bowl hair be my bowl hair."

She draws out a sigh. "Fiiiiiiiine, but I'm still gonna brush it."

Rhonda spends nearly an hour on brushing out my hair. She has a system. Spray, comb. Spray, comb. Brush, flatten, comb, spray, repeat. It goes on like that until finally, Rhonda stands in front of me and smiles. "Perfect."

She moves me in front of the mirror and I must say, I do look quite attractive. My bowl haircut is the same as usual, but it's smoother, softer, and more defined. I nod. "I'd fuck me," I joke.

Rhonda laughs and pats my back. "The question is if Anthony will." I roll my eyes playfully.

We get something to eat and get our suits on. We don't eat much because Anthony and Rhonda's date, Ras, are going to take us out to eat later.

"Let's go take some pictures on the front porch."

Rhonda's grandmother follows us out to the cold, Saturday afternoon for pictures. We pose together, but we're careful to not look like a couple. I don't think I could ever date Rhonda, simply because... Because I love Anthony so much. And.. I think I'm gay. I've never exactly known for sure, but Anthony is the love of my life. I'm certain of it.

We take our last picture together and check the time. "Ready to go?" Rhonda asks. I nod.

"Ready as I'll ever be."

It's time for the best night of my life to begin.
