chapter 19: poison enters the soul

Hotch’s P.O.V

I stood beside David who was spinning Strauss’s sobriety chip through his fingers, “I want to take her back to Virginia, and she never liked the city Aaron, I’m not about to leave her,”

At that moment Alex, came over she had a white bandage around her wrist that she was hiding with the sleeve of jay’s shirt. She moved stiffly like she felt that she was going to fall over, if she moved to quickly. She wrapped her arms around David and he rubbed her back silently she had tears streaming down her face and I knew that this was a moment that she wanted to be alone with David. I moved away from them slightly but I could still here their whispered conversation

“you know I wouldn’t have minded,” Alex whispered into David’s chest as he rubbed circles on her back,
“minded what?” David asked in a voice that showed he wasn’t really paying attention to what she was saying.
“If you married her, it would have been a bit weird at first, but I would get used to it,”
“why would it be weird?” David had started more attention
“just the fact that I would be living with my boss,” she mumbled hoping to get a smile or even a fake smirk but she was disappointed.

Alex made a quick stop to the apartment that she was staying at she left a scrawled note for her stepsister and grabbed her suitcase she came down to the car where Morgan and I were waiting  still wearing jays shirt. She pulled her jeans on in the car and we drove to the airstrip. On the jet I filled the others in on what the man had said on the phone to me. He had taunted me about George Foyet killing Haley, he had told me where to find Erin he wanted me to find her alive so that she would die in my arms just as Haley had. But the one thing that played on my mind was the man on the phone was definitely not Connor Wailand.

Alex’s P.O.V

“Wait a second this guy knew about Foyet?” JJ asked as we walked into the BAU.
“Who’s Foyet?” asked Blake
“The man who killed my wife,” replied Hotch checking his phone
“that was a classified case. It’s not in any file.” Morgan was astounded
“The only people who have access to it are part of the bureau,” I agreed with Morgan
“so this guy has to be on the inside,” suggested Reid,
“conference room in 5,” Hotch said as we dispersed to our desks or our offices.

Jay was still recovering from his head injury, and David had gone to the coroner’s office to talk to the family of Strauss, all I knew was one of her daughters was just younger than me and her other daughter and son were just older than me.  I know it is wrong but I was more worried about David than I was about jay. Jay was the one who had sustained serious injury; he had a concussion but he would be fully recovered later this afternoon. But David had just lost the only woman he allowed himself love after the death of Caroline. Wounds like that never truly heal the pain just fades into the background and the pain becomes more bearable.

I walked into the conference room and both Garcia and Kevin were pinning up all the replicator stuff. For people who hadn’t actually been in the field the replicator got a hell of a lot of both Strauss and I. the team had almost given up on the fact that the replicator might be Connor Wailand. Everything the replicator did was nothing like the profile of Connor Wailand. He hid his face from me. He forced us to harm ourselves. He held a gun to us but used poison to kill Strauss. He taunted me about leaving me for dead but made sure David came up to the roof of the hotel.

If it was Wailand he would have killed me right then and there not leave it to chance he wouldn’t have made Strauss drink, he would have humiliated her some other way. But the replicator knew things about my family that only David Josie and I knew about, stuff that Wailand was involved with, and stuff that he had forced me to tell him. Garcia looked at me with a worried expression as I leant against the window sill staring out of the window, I barely noticed the others enter and start talking the thoughts about the replicator and Connor Wailand filled my mind without me even trying to block them from my mind.

“for someone who is never in the field he sure got a hell of a lot of photos of Strauss, its like he’s obsessed with her or something,”
“there’s also a lot of photos of Alex, considering that she was in Chicago most of the time,”
“Garcia get Kevin to go through every pixel of these photos he’s taunting us, there’s something here we just can’t see it,”

The team sat down and started going over a completely new profile. A profile about Strauss and her being the main target. Reid Blake and I went back to our desks in the bull pen JJ and Morgan leant against the desk, jay had taken my desk in the bull pen so the photos of David, Josie and I had been replaced with photos of his family and pointless selfies of the pair of us.

David came in looking more upset than he had in New York. JJ went to walk over to him but Reid grabbed her arm. I pushed past Morgan who tried to grab my arm but I was walking too quickly. David walked in to his office and I stormed in after him. “We will get this guy Dave,”
“that’s what Hotch said about Wailand, look where that got us,”
“Dave this is different,”
“how,” he demanded, “who says that guy who killed Erin wasn’t Wailand,”
“because his voice was different he was to short all his proportions were wrong,”
“you said you were blindfolded,”
“I was while he was forcing her to drink, but when I wasn’t he wore a mask,”
“why did she die and you got off unharmed ,”
“unharmed? He forced me to break the one promise I had made to myself,” I pulled up my sleeve and I took of the bandage 5 new scars were forming there 4 new slits and a side wards eight. “I promised myself that I would never cause myself harm again, I made that promise when I saw how much it hurt you the last time I was 7 yet you still think that I can’t see when you are in pain,”
he sighed and stared at his desk there was a manila envelope on it.  “I’m sorry Alex, I just need some time,”
“how long David,” I could feel the anger rising inside me “a week? A month? A year?”
“I don’t know,” he snapped, “how long would it take you if you lost jay, think about it like that,”
“I’m sorry I asked!” I spat stormed out I knew my anger was unnecessary but I couldn’t help it.

Hotch had just called the team into the conference room when I entered.  “How is he?” asked Morgan
“not good,” I sighed “I think I may have made it worse,”

“A dozen federal employees have read our case files over the past 2 years,” Hotch said “all of them went through the highest levels of security, each of those names needs to be checked against Reid’s list,”
“we should get them in here, start the interrogations,” suggested Blake.
“If he knows we looking his way he might retreat,” Hotch raised his eyebrows at her before placing his hand comfortably onto his hips. “we should also look at the support staff of each of these employees,”
“each one has two assistants, so we are already up to 36 people,” JJ added up the numbers in her head
“we should look at employees who work a 4 day 48 hour week given the fact that most of the murders happened over a long weekend,” Reid calculated in his no nonsense manor , “that means if he traveled by car nobody at work would of missed them,”
“well he probably wouldn’t fly, that would leave a paper trail,” JJ said agreeing with Reid.
“what’s this,” Hotch said taking a piece of paper Blake was handing to him
“the replicators first case was the same as mine, the rapist who made Epps look tame,” Blake referred to a rapist how had murdered 15 girls within 2 months before he was finally caught
“in DC, that means his first case wasn’t the silencer,” Hotch remembering
“do you think it is more than a coincidence that he started all of this when I joined the team?” Blake glanced at him nervously
“I don’t know,” Hotch sighed
“that was the same night where Wailand made reappearance,” I said to her calming her worries but only adding to my own.
“Dave’s back? Excuse me,” Hotch walked out Morgan was hot on his heels.

Morgan’s P.O.V

Hotch’s phone rang and he walked off to answer it. Against my better judgment I knocked on the door to Rossi’s office I opened the door and entered.

“Hey Rossi, you alright,” I said as he looked up from the paper he was reading, “you don’t look so good,” he looked almost sick.
“Get out,” he spat standing up and dropping the piece of paper he had just been reading.
“Look I know this has got to be tough on you but…” I was cut off by Rossi drawing his gun and aiming it at me. I gasped, “Rossi what the hell are you doing.”
He stared at me with nothing but pure hatred I don’t see how he can go from treating me like family one moment and then loathing me the next. “Rossi put the gun down,” I said trying to keep my voice calm.

Hotch entered the room at that moment but Rossi’s aim remained trained on me never wavering for a second. “What’s going on?” he asked trying to distract him.
“Morgan’s DNA was found on the glass that cut her wrist,”

I couldn’t believe it had Rossi completely lost his mind I was the one who had bought Strauss’s alcoholism to attention. I would force her to drink, much less kill her. “Strauss?”  I asked still not quiet believing what I heard.
“you did that,”
“Dave, someone on the inside is doing this,”
“you're looking at him,”
“Derek did not hurt her Dave you need to trust me on this,”
“trust you, I bet you told Erin the same thing,” his voice wavered and tears flowed from his eyes, “look at what that got her.”
“Dave you’ve been drugged,” Hotch said stepping toward Rossi
“I was too late Erin,” he said looking over towards the plush leather couch, “I’m so sorry,”  this drug whatever it may off been was seriously messing with Rossi’s head
“he wants us against each other if you pull that trigger he wins,”  Hotch said taking another step toward Rossi, “she’s not there, give me the gun,”
“I’m gonna call the paramedics,” I said walking out of the room. Within 5 minutes of my call the paramedics arrived they gave Rossi a sedative that would stop the affects of whatever drug he had been given. They wheeled him away on a stretcher bed as Alex stood with her arms crossed across her chest staring after him this time must be trying for her with jay in the hospital a chance that the guy who is replicating all of the cases we have solved might also be the same guy who raped her almost 3 years ago.
Hotch confirmed that Rossi would be ok we were extremely lucky that the dosage of the drug on the report he was reading was not fatal.
