Chapter 10: we're her family
Alex’s P.O.V
Before Emily left she had given Hotch a document the bank accounts for all people responsible for the arrest of Ian Doyle. Morgan came walking into the bullpen where we had set up a case board I still hadn’t told David about Parker in a way I didn’t want to. In his mind Parker found the perfect adoption family grew up like any other kid got a job hopefully became successful.
“I’ve got four names of the bottom of this list Prentiss gave us, Luke Renault, Lilly Riley, Lila Raffelby, Laurence Rodgers,” he said writing the names on to the sheet in the correct spaces.
“All with the initials L and R,” I said in a kind of shocked voice
“the CIA often use cryptograms like that to assign there non-official cover agents working on the same case,”
“so do a lot of foreign countries,” agreed Morgan, “these last four names are covers, spies,”
“wait, no this isn’t right,” Garcia said snatching the piece of paper from Morgan and shaking her head, we all gave her confused looks, she explained “see this space that shouldn’t be here,”
“could it be a formatting error,” asked Reid
“no this is a spread sheet template, the formatting doesn’t allow for this, there’s a missing name on here,” she exclaimed
“there’s another agent whose cover is LR,” confirmed Hotch
“Lauren Reynolds is dead,” mumbled Reid
“what?” asked Hotch
“Lauren Reynolds is dead, Prentiss said that on a phone call seventeen days ago but her intention wasn’t of surprise or grief it was like a mantra like she was reminding herself,” he exclaimed standing up “Lauren Reynolds, LR,”
“if Emily is the last one on this list then she is on Doyle’s List too,” I said in a grimace tone, Hotch picked up his phone and dialed Emily’s number and a phone rang nearby
“that explains her behavior these past few weeks the secrets the evasion,” David agreed
“she’s been biting her finger nail again too,” Reid was flustered
“guys,” said Hotch holding up Emily’s phone badge and gun,
I couldn’t believe she left without even saying goodbye. When JJ was forced to go work at the pentagon, I made her promise that she would meet up with me every Saturday when I wasn’t on a case, she agreed and so far so good we have managed to meet up almost every second Saturday. But if Emily is on Doyle’s list. He will either kill her or she will kill him I was praying for the later of the two.
“She left her badge and gun, why would she do that?” asked Morgan
“it doesn’t make sense, wh...Why run we’re her family? we could help her,” Reid stuttered
“Doyle’s killing families, she’s not married, not close to any relatives, Doyle was ready to wipe us out,” David explained he was the only one thinking rationally “she ran to protect us,”
I had hard enough I knew the only place I could go without being followed by the conversations about Emily was David’s office. I knew that by going into his office the only one who would follow me would be David. I walked into the office and closed the door behind me I laid down on the couch and closed my eyes. Emily was protecting our team from the team that killed my mother. Yet I was keeping my knowledge about them as a secret. I knew who one of the team was but he is dead so does it really matter anymore?
As this thought was going through my head the door opened and light footsteps entered the room I opened my eyes and saw David’s face distorted with worry. “Alex, no more secrets, what is going on with you?” he asked pulling his desk chair closer to the couch I couldn’t bear to look him in the eyes so I turned away from him, he knew I was hiding something. Something I didn’t know how to tell the team. It was a family matter after all, “do you know something?” he asked again.
“it was parker,” I mumbled,” the man who Emily shot, it was him,”
I had caught Dave by surprise, I had never known about my brother until a couple of months ago, and now I recognized, him by sight. “How do you know?”
I swallowed hard, “eleven years ago, when mum was murdered 4 men burst into our apartment all wearing black beanies and white mask exactly like the ones the men who killed Delany were wearing,” I was going to continue but he cut me off.
“So how does it relate to parker, you never met him,” he sighed realizing I hadn’t finished explaining.
“when I saw the mask it reminded me of that night, the fear I felt, two of the four removed there mask the other two kept them on, parker was the one of the ones who removed it I know it’s him because he kept saying stuff like ‘surely you should recognize me I am your son after all’ when ever mum asked who they were, I never thought much of it because you always talk about surrogates and stuff,” I sighed “I knew it was true when Reid finished that sketch, they all wore that tattoo and gave me a matching scar,”
He looked at me confused. He thought he knew about all of my scars. All of them accept one. I stood up and rolled my shirt up and pulled down the waist band of my pants right above the waist band of my underwear was a four leaf clover. It was a bit stretched and disorientated and surrounded by stretch marks due to my pregnancy. David was hesitant but he gently ran his fingers over the scar tracing the leaves of the clover. “How did I not know,” he mumbled but he knew the answer. I didn’t speak to anyone for 3 months after her death. I had always bottled up every secret about that day. “The second man the other one who removed his masks is there anything we could use to ID him?”
“It was Doyle, defiantly him,” I said leaning against the desk. At that moment there was a knock at the door, we both looked up and a familiar face peeped into the room, “JJ,” I exclaimed standing up and hugging her before wincing with pain from a cramp
“how far along are you?” she asked with a slight glance to my stomach worried that I might be having a premature baby
“I’m 6 months doctor said I should expect a few cramps from the child exploring,”
We walked back to the bullpen where everyone else was. Hotch soon decided that we were going to fly out to Boston after he and Morgan got back from Emily’s apartment. She met Doyle in Boston so we figured that she might be retracing their steps to find him. If she was protecting us she wouldn’t be hiding she would take the fight to him.
On the jet Garcia showed us a video of Emily ambushing Doyle’s vehicle only to discover that Doyle wasn’t in the car but behind her hiding in the shadows. He announced himself only to fire 3 shots into Emily’s chest. Causing both Garcia and I to scream and JJ to turn away from the screen. It was then noticeable that she was wearing a bullet proof vest under her jacket. Doyle then put her into the back of another SUV and drove off. That was the last footage we had of Emily being alive there was no way to tell from there on out. I was sitting in Boston PD with JJ and Reid, JJ was talking about how Emily would react to being kidnapped by Doyle she wouldn’t take it lightly. Our only suspect had been arrested with a suitcase full of cash I was hoping that he would not be coming into close contact with me because I felt that Clyde Easter would recognize me considering I stayed in his apartment in London for about a week while his team was solving the murder of my mother I kept in touch with Tsia Mosley but know I wished I hadn’t she had been Doyle’s last victim. Dave came in dragging a screaming lunatic “do you know who I am, I’m the man,”
“who’s that?’ I heard Hotch ask after talking to Garcia
“Jack Fahey, Irish mob, he rang Easter 12 times in six hours,” Dave replied
“any connection to Doyle?,” asked Hotch
“well Boston pd says he is low level but the Irish mob has ties to the IRA,” David explained further
“see what you can get out of him,” Hotch ordered
Hotch went off to interrogate Easter while Dave and Reid hassled Fahey. I couldn’t find anything else to so I stood behind the two way mirror watching Fahey’s interrogation Reid and David were talking about him being a narcissist and then David called him a hood rat while Fahey was yelling for a smoke \
“I’m not a hood rat, take it back,” he snapped
“well you look like one you smell like one, you smell that?” David was being snarky
“Hood rat,” replied Reid sniffing the air
“I am not, take it back,”
“hey Jack, do you know what a hood rat is?” David asked, causing Fahey to give a dumbfounded expression, “see what I mean, he is just going to have to learn the hard way,”
“Alright, alright look Clyde was going to pay my medical bill. This ear, it aint growing back,” Fahey indicated the blood stained plaster on his ear
“what happened to it,”
“this bitch team mate of his shot it off, said it was a warning she thought she could take out an IRA big shot so I told Easter, ahhh what the hell man!” Reid and Dave glanced at each other before David grabbed Fahey’s ear
“where’s Prentiss,” he demanded twisting the ear
“who?” screeched Fahey
“Lauren Reynolds, where is Lauren Reynolds,” demanded Reid
“oh a friend of yours is she?” smirked Fahey
“you tell us where she is right now or I swear I will send you to a prison where they will teach you what a hood rat is,” David threatened
“and by the time you do she will be in pieces, so ah my price just went up,” jeered Fahey”2 hundred thousand and no jail time,”
David and Reid left the room and Fahey was soon escorted out to sit in the middle
“we can’t possibly pay him,” I demanded as the others were suggesting it
“what other leverage do we have?” asked David
“is he an addict?” I asked
“he is having a nicotine fit, we wouldn’t let him smoke,” confirmed David
“we could use that, he would relax open his big mouth,” answered JJ
“is that enough?” he asked
“what else do we have?” I suggested
David JJ and I went up to the roof and were talking to Fahey, he was smirking and flirting with birth JJ and I, JJ was flirting within her boundaries back to him. A sudden burst of a warm slimy substance hit my face I opened my eyes to see a bullet wound in Fahey’s shoulder. “Down!” yelled David and JJ at the same time pushing me to the ground, as they ducked for cover as well. Two more shots were fired into Fahey’s chest he was dead before he hit the ground. We went back downstairs and I changed my shirt and washed the blood of my face, I came back out and everybody except Hotch was waiting around the project board. “Something’s bugging you isn’t it?” David asked as I joined the rest of the team “what is it?”
“Why did Doyle kill that kid in DC? I mean Emily is Doyle’s stressor right, so that means Ron Cosenza’s wife would be a surrogate for Emily and Kerry Fagan’s husband would me a surrogate for himself, so who was the kid a surrogate for,” I replied as Hotch and Clyde Easter walked in
I recognized him almost immediately. He recognized me as well. “Little Alexandra Stedler isn’t so little anymore,” he remarked before looking at my bulging belly. “Nor is her stomach, I’m guessing the murder isn’t the worst thing that has happened in your life,” his accent stronger than usual against all of our similar American accents.
“You have no idea,” I said giving him a small smile of thanks
“If Doyle dose have a child is there a chance Emily knew, but didn’t tell you,” JJ asked Easter
“why would she keep it from me,” he asked astounded
“who was on the premises when you arrested Doyle?” asked Hotch
“just his staff,” answered Easter
“all Irish?” Hotch fired his question as soon as the previous was answered
“Yeah,”Easter was trying to keep up with Hotch’s rapid pace but the questions asked were about an incident that happened seven years ago and Easter’s memory wasn’t exactly eidetic.
“that’s a start,” Hotch started giving orders to Garcia of things to narrow down her search she eventually found Declan Jones. The son of Doyle’s house keeper. Garcia found a photo of both the house keeper and Declan being shot. Garcia found the address of the warehouse they died in. the team went off to get her while Garcia and I twiddled our thumbs waiting, praying she would make it out alive.
Morgan was the one to find Emily. One other the detectives drove us over to the hospital where we had nothing to do but sit and wait for her to get out of surgery, JJ was allowed into the area outside the surgery room but the rest of us weren’t. I sat with my head rested on David’s shoulder and tapped my foot anxiously. JJ walked into the waiting room her eyes bloodshot from crying, “She never made it off the table,” she choked out we all sat in shock we had lost a dear friend. Reid went to leave but JJ pulled him into a hug “I never even got to say goodbye,” he chocked as his tears were making him shake. David wrapped his arms around me. The tears flowing freely form everybody’s eyes. We're her family tears are only expected.
