Chapter 23: Don't let go
Hiccup's POV
"Sigurd." I snarled and out of the corner of my eye I could see the blood drain from Astrid's face as she seemed to struggle with keeping her axe up.
"Now that we've all gotten to catch up a little," Dagur face darkened as he raised his battle axe. "Let's get to the reason why we're here. It's time for my revenge."
"How did you guys even meet?" Confusion laced Astrid's words as she looked between her two previous captors.
Dagur and Sigurd shared a grin. "After you left, I figured if I wanted to get you back, I'd need some backup. Then one evening I was out on the town, I overheard two Berserkers talking about how their Chief was planning on burning Berk to the ground due to some revenge mission he was on. Naturally, I traveled to Berserker island, told Dagur my story and we found that we had a lot in common as well as shared interests."
"Of course, I ended up killing those two Berserkers for going around and talking about my plans. Shortly after that we combined our forces into the Berserker armada and here we are." Dagur swung his battle axe around in circles as the wicked grin stuck on his face grew even wider.
I kept my glare set on Sigurd as he leaned casually on his sword, a smug grin on his face. He blew a kiss in the direction of Astrid, which made her flinch as she took a small step closer to me, raising her axe with shaky hands. I felt the blood boil in my veins as Toothless growled at the two men in front of us.
"So you're here for revenge as well then, Sigurd?" I spat his name as inferno blazed in my hand, itching to bury itself in Sigurd's chest.
Sigurd chuckled as he casually cracked his knuckles. "No, no, that's Dagur's thing. I'm only here to take what is mine."
I could have sworn I heard a whimper escape Astrid as she seemed to be cowering behind me. Toothless' tail curled around her feet as the dragon bared his sharp teeth at Sigurd before once again turning to keep watch of Dagur.
"She's not your property Sigurd, nor will she ever be. Astrid belongs to Astrid alone. Not anyone else." I stated as the back of my hand brushed against Astrid's. Her pinky wrapped around mine and I knew that she was grateful for what I had said.
"By the looks of it," Sigurd snickered as he looked Astrid up and down. "I think Astrid knows she belongs more to me than she belongs to herself, well, at least her body does."
My eyes widened as I looked between Astrid and Sigurd, finally connecting the dots as Astrid shamefully avoided my gaze and shrunk even further. "Astrid, please tell me he didn't do what he's insinuating he did."
Astrid remained quiet as laughter rippled through Sigurd, which seemed to be contagious as Dagur burst into maniacal laughter as well. "She didn't tell you about all the fun we had during our time together, did she?"
I whipped my head towards Sigurd as I was ready to rip him apart limb-by-limb. "You son of a bitch."
Sigurd chuckled as he picked up his sword and got into a fighting stance. "Don't worry, Chief Hiccup, I'll take good care of her when you die. Hell, I'll even make sure our heir lives to see it's first birthday!"
And that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I charged at Sigurd, sword raised high before I rapidly struck down and managed to singe the tips of his hair before he blocked my blow. At the same time, Toothless and Astrid had gone up against Dagur.
Astrid still looked a little shaken from what had happened mere seconds before, but Toothless was helping her out by firing his last plasma blasts at Dagur, who gracefully evaded them all.
The sound of metal clashing rang through the air as Sigurd and I struck, blocked and parried each other in a seemingly endless dance of blades. I had to admit, he was good, which meant that if one of us slipped up, they were as good as dead. Our clash continued as I lost focus of the others and fully dedicated myself to the battle I was busy fighting.
It took me a minute to notice that Sigurd had been driving me towards the edge, continuously pushing me backwards so that I would reach the edge of the cliff, whose location seemed to have been chosen quite meticulously considering it's 600 feet drop straight to some sharp rocks sticking up from the ocean like ridiculously large skewers, hungry for you to drop down onto them and become a human kebab. (Though I have no idea what a kebab is.)
Finally, I allowed myself a quarter of a second to see how Astrid and Toothless were doing and unfortunately it wasn't as good as expected. Toothless laid unmoving on the ground a little further behind, whilst Astrid was being driven backwards by Dagur at a surprising speed. A fire burned through my veins at the sight of my downed dragon. No one hurts my dragon and gets away with it, absolutely no one.
A roar unlike any other I had heard from myself before burst out of me as a new strength washed over me and pure adrenaline coursed through my blood. I swung, dodged, blocked and pushed Sigurd backwards so fast he seemed to be struggling to keep up. Everything was going alright until a yelp echoed through my ears.
I turned just in time to see Dagur knock Astrid off the edge of the cliff and my heart went into panic mode, beating so hard against my chest that I thought it would jump out right after her. My momentary distraction gave Sigurd an opening, which led to a gaping wound in my side.
I let out a gasp as my hand instinctively flew down to my wound, which was gushing blood. My head felt a little lighter than usual as I quickly found myself tumbling down in the grass. I was done, it was all over with. I was going to die, Dagur would get his revenge and Sigurd would see me dead. All hope was lost.
A wicked grin spread across Sigurd's face as he raised his sword, preparing himself for the killing blow. Right as he was about to bring the sword down and put an end to the tragic story of my life, a loud groan sounded from where Dagur was standing beside my dragon.
Dagur was momentarily stunned, his axe still raised in preparation for him to decapitate the night fury only to find him slowly, standing up. He and Sigurd exchanged a distressed look before Dagur cried out: "What the hell are you standing over there for?! Come help me with the damn dragon!"
Sigurd quickly forgot about me and rushed over to help Dagur restrain Toothless. I was desperate to help my dragon, but what could I do in my state? I was just about to give up the fight when a low, but very familiar whistle rang from somewhere beneath the cliff, igniting a spark of hope in my chest that someway, somehow, Astrid was still alive and she was calling for Stormfly.
Another wave of strength and energy coursed through me, momentarily numbing the pain in my side as I wrapped my fingers around the hilt of my sword and got back up on my feet. Dagur and Sigurd quickly took notice of this and right as Sigurd was about to charge at me, Dagur's face darkened in that menacing way of his as he held a hand up towards Sigurd.
"You ensure the night fury stays down, I'll take care of Hiccup." His face contorted into an evil grimace as he raised his axe and came rushing towards me, like the Berserker that he was. I quickly blocked his axe with my sword and for a moment we just struggled against one another, before I quickly sidestepped and let Dagur stumble forwards. I struck my flaming sword over Dagur's back, earning a loud groan from the Berserker Chief as the sound of a blade being drawn behind me filled my ears. Where are you Astrid?
Sigurd seemed to not give a single fuck about his orders at all as I noticed him striding towards me like he was some evil villain. Dagur was quickly recovering from my strike to his back and I knew that soon I would have to face two skilled opponents simultaneously. Fortunately for me, on that day the fates seemed to be smiling down at me.
The flapping of heavy wings filled the air as a sharp 'screech!' echoed through our ears. Sigurd's hands flew to protect his ears as a familiar blue and yellow Deadly Nadder rose above the edge of the cliff, on her back none other than her famed rider and the general of Berk herself; Astrid Haddock.
A raw and animalistic roar rippled from Astrid as she jumped off the back of her dragon and ran towards her rapist and tormentor with her sharp axe reflecting the first rays of the sun as she aimed it at his neck. CLASH! Once again metal found metal and from what I could see, Astrid had gotten some of her old fire back or she had just been fueled by so much hatred for Sigurd that she was in the mood for decapitation. Perhaps even both. The battle raged on between the two and it was almost like an aura of pure fury surrounded Astrid as she viciously and fiercely fought the man she hated more than anyone else.
Dagur and I were in a similar situation, but we were both growing tired. I struck down towards his chest, but he blocked it. He aimed for my head but I elegantly ducked before attempting to strike him from the side, which he dodged. The dance went on for what felt like ages until I finally found my window.
A wound on Dagur's heel was causing him to limp, which made it so that with every strike of his axe, his side was even more exposed than usual. As Dagur swung his axe in an attempt to hit my side, I quickly dodged before landing a deep, solid blow in his side. A gasp escaped Dagur as he created another window for me. And another. And another.
Once the Berserker Chief was on the ground, there was no way he was getting up again, not after all, the torment and torture he had put both me and my loved ones through. The Chief was coughing up blood as I stood over him, sword raised. "This is for everyone you've ever hurt. Burn in Hell, Dagur The Deranged."
I brought my sword down through him and finally finished the saga of The Berserker Chief, Dagur the Deranged. A horrible feeling of guilt washed over me as my actions finally weighed upon me. It was necessary. It was necessary. It was necessary. I pressed a hand to the wound at my side, which had begun stinging painfully again now that all the adrenaline in my body had left. I pressed a hand to my side as I attempted to stop the bleeding.
I turned to find Astrid and Sigurd in the middle of a heated battle and right as I was about to step in, Astrid buried her axe in Sigurd's shin, causing him to crumble to the ground. The look on Astrid face was cold as ice as she put two fingers in her mouth and whistled a command to Stormfly. At first, I didn't recognize the command, but as soon as I realized ... well, there was no stopping her anyway.
Stormfly opened her mouth and a steady blast of her magnesium fire was aimed at the man in front of her, roasting Sigurd alive as Astrid watched, her face void of emotion as it was lit up by the orange glow of the flames. Sigurd was rendered a blackened crisp on the ground along with a burn mark that would take years for the grass the grow over.
For a minute, Astrid and I both just stood in silence, thinking over what we had just done. Astrid eventually moved and made her way over to me, carefully wrapping her arms around my waist so that she didn't hit my wound as she buried her nose in the crook of my neck. It was in that moment I realized that this was the first time she had hugged me since Sigurd took her away and for a moment I felt zero remorse for that cruel man.
I pulled Astrid closer to me as we just silently embraced. Behind us, Stormfly had managed to help Toothless up on his feet and he was looking better by the minute. "He only knocked him out."
"Huh?" I replied, not really knowing what my wife was going on about.
Astrid pulled away so she could look into my eyes. "I know that you're thinking about Toothless and he'll be fine. Dagur just knocked him out so that he would become less of an obstacle."
"Oh. Alright, thanks." I carefully tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear, a little surprised when she didn't flinch at my touch. "How are you feeling."
Astrid shrugged before she rested her head on my chest. "I don't know. I mean it felt right when I killed him, but it won't erase what he ... what he did."
My brows knitted together as I began stroking her hair. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I ... I didn't really want to relive it, I'm sorry. Listen, Hiccup, I get if this is too much for you and I wouldn't blame you for leaving if—"
"No. Don't say that, don't ever say that. You and me? We're meant to be, we're soulmates and I won't ever let you go ever again, alright?"
A small smile tugged at the corner of Astrid's lips. "Alright."
"I love you, Astrid." I pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Now what do you say we go check up on our friends? Maybe get a little patched up as well?"
Once again she lifted her gaze to meet mine, then she did something that rendered me speechless for the next five minutes, she pressed a small, quick kiss to my lips, but that was more than enough to send my heart racing as the butterflies in my stomach went bananas, completely erasing the stinging pain from my wound. "I'd like nothing more."
