8: Marcus

A loud rumble of thunder woke Abbe up. He realized if the noise woke him then it must've woken Sarah. He quickly slipped on his shirt and went to her room .

"Sarah....are you alright, my child?" he asked softly as he opened Sarah's door.

Sarah was crying softly on the bed. He went to her and sat on the edge of the bed. She then mumbled, "...d-dad..."

He gently put his hand on her back, "I'm sorry, there's only me here for you right now. If you tell me how your father would comfort you, perhaps I could try."

Sarah tried to remember. Then she did. She was only 5 years old until she was a teen when it happened.

"Daddy!" Little Sarah screamed in her bedroom. She just a had a nightmare. Instantly Mr Gold and Belle rushed in.

The little girl sobbed hugging her Maximus doll.

"It's okay sweetie, daddy's right here," he gently pulled her into his arms and began to sing to her.

She sniffled as he held her and sing her a song that made her calm down slowly. She looked up at him as he sang. After he finished, he leaned in and kissed her forehead.

"...could...could you...sing to me please, Abbe?"

"....of course. What would you like me to sing?"

"...You'll be in my Heart?"

"Ah, I know that one. From the Spirit movie?" He was wrong but dang the right song. He smiled slightly and thought for a moment, trying to remember the lyrics.

"....Come stop your crying
It will be alright, just take my hand, hold it tight, I will protect you
From all around you, I will be here
Don't you cry.....
For one so small
You seem so strong, my arms will hold you keep you safe and warm...," he continued to sing softly to her as he gently rubbed her back.

Sarah was slowly calming down. She imagined her father singing to her. She missed him so much. After Coulmier finished, she got up and hugged him, "thank you..."

Coulmier wrapped his arms around her and smiled.

"You're welcome, I'm happy to help. Would you like me to stay until you sleep?"

"Please?"

He nodded, "of course. I'll sit here if this is alright?"

She nodded. She rolled to her side with her back facing the window. He stayed by her while she tried to sleep. Soon she did, but he didn't want to leave her.

He stayed by her all night, at least he'd already had some sleep.

Soon morning came, the sky was red still. Coulmier opened his eyes seeing he fell asleep and noticed Sarah snuggled close to him. He blushed and she was still sound asleep. Anne Marie was on his chest curled up in a ball. He felt like he should move, but he didn't want to disturb Sarah or Anne Marie, so he stayed still.

Soon Sarah woke up. She blushed seeing Coulmier beside her. "Y-you stayed all night with me?"

"Uh yes, I hope you don't mind? I didn't mean to fall asleep, I'm sorry...I didn't want to move and disturb you and Anne Marie."

She blushed, "no I don't. It really helps." She kissed his cheek.

He smiled and turned to look at her, but then realised their faces were so close, so he quickly looked back up at the ceiling, "I-I'm glad it helped," he blushed.

She blushed and looked down. Anne Marie heard them, so she stretched and woke up. He smiled and set her down beside Sarah.

"I will go make breakfast." He told her and went to his room to put on his clothes. He then downstairs and made breakfast.

Sarah came downstairs later and stopped. At the front doors she heard banging. Coulmier heard it and came into the sanctuary with her. Something or someone was at the door. "Abbe?"

He went to the door and called out "who is it? Who's there?"

Then there was a louder bang which made him jumped. There were voices on the other side. Moaning. Suddenly a hand punched through when made Sarah squeak. She ran upstairs to find Anne Marie. Couldmier saw their faces. It was the walking corpses and they were trying to get in.

"Sarah!" he raced to the bottom of the stairs and called up to her, "hurry, we have to leave."

Sarah grabbed Anne Marie and put her in her bag with her Commodus doll and ran. But she then was grabbed by someone. It was a corpse that came through the wall. He looked much stronger than the others and she was even in a lot of pain by his strength. "ABBE!!!" She screamed as the corpse tried to bite her.

He grabbed a pole and hurried up the stairs towards her. He saw the corpse and began hitting it over the head as hard as he could until it let go of her. It was now mad and turned and tried to bite him but he managed to dodge and kept hitting him as hard as he could. She shivered as he fought the monster until it fell back. He then grabbed her hand and ran out the back way. She screamed as the corpses came in the back way trying to grab them, but they kept dodging from them.

Once they got outside he ran to the reverend's car and opened the door. He hurriedly pushed Sarah inside and jumped in, locking the doors.

"Oh, thank God the reverend never kept his car locked."

Sarah was shaking and crying as she held her backpack.

Couldmier found his keys still in the ignition which was a relief. He was about to start it up when the corpse that grabbed Sarah earlier jumped on the hood of the car which made Sarah scream.

"It's alright, it's alright, Sarah. Don't look..." he fired up the engine and threw the car into reverse. The corpse clung on so he drove forwards then slammed on the brakes, making the corpse go flying off. He then quickly turned the car and sped off towards the road, "are you alright, Sarah?"

Sarah opened her eyes shaking, but nodded. Anne Marie was scared so she stayed in her bag.

He rested his hand on her arm for a moment to try and reassure her, "try not to worry. We'll find another safe place to stay."

"I just hope my father is ok..."

"Have faith, my child, I prayed for your father's safety last night, I'm sure he will be alright. Try not to worry. I understand you're afraid for him, but I believe all will be well."

"...he's...he is just...we are so close. I am his whole world...."

She looked the window as he drove down the road.

Sarah was giggling as she run around the yard. Mr Gold was playing blind tag with her. He was blindfolded and trying to find her by the sound of her cute laughter. He reached out with his hands and tried to follow the sound of her giggles, which was making him chuckle too.

Sarah squealed when he was close to grabbing her. Belle was watching them smiling as they played. It was so sweet and even magical.

Suddenly, Sarah squealed once her father caught her and she laughed. Belle laughed as Rumpel removed his blindfold, laughing also. He then placed the blindfold on Sarah and spun her around for it was his turn to run from her. Belle knew that Rumpel would let her catch him, he always did.

Sarah giggled and tried to find him. She reached her arms out trying to feel him. She only heard silence except her mother giggling. She then smirked thinking she was getting closer to her father, "I'm gonna get you, daddy."

Mr Gold stayed silent, but tried to get in front of her as she tried to find him. Soon she stood infront of him. He then knelt down and she reached out and feel for him. She felt someone's face. Feeling his smooth skin, his nose and even his long hair. Mr Gold smiled at her seeing that she was smiling knowing it was him. She knew it was him. He pulled her blindfold above her eyes and she brightened her smile more and then threw her arms around him. Mr Gold then wrapped his arms his little girl and kissed her cheek.

Sarah teared up remembering that flashback. She was very close to her father more than anyone. He was always there for her. Even when she was scared or confused. He was always there to help her. Now she was scared if she will lose him.

Coulmier could sense that Sarah was upset over her father again but he couldn't really comfort her while he was driving. He also realized he had a problem. He didn't know the town so he didn't know where anything was. He kept trying to think of where they could go to be safe. But.... he thought the church would've been safe, it was a house of God, a sacred place. Yet it hadn't been safe. He sighed and shook his head, trying to shake off his doubts. Now he needed to have more faith than ever, not be doubtful.

Suddenly the car wasn't working and was slowly down. Sarah lift her head and began to worry.

"Please no...," he muttered, as the car lost power and slowly came to a stop. They were on a road in the middle of the countryside, still far from town.

Sarah teared up and shivered. "A-Abbe?"

He noticed the roof of the car. There was smoke so he got out and checked it. He was disgusted seeing blood and cooked flesh on the engine. It must've ruined the car.

He got back into the car and locked the doors again. He needed a moment to gather his thoughts "I'm sorry Sarah, we're going to have to continue on foot. It's just, I don't know the area. So I'm not sure where to go from here" he looked down, "I'm sorry, I'm not much use am I?"

"...," Sarah set her bag down and hugged him, "you are. You...you saved my life...so...thank you."

He sighed and shook his head, "you needn't thank me, I'm not sure what to do next because I am responsible for you safety, and I don't want to put you in danger."

Sarah looked up at him, "I don't want you in danger either."

"But it isn't your duty to protect me, you're a child of God, I am supposed to keep you safe.....now I'm starting to...," he covered his face with his hands, ".... Sorry, it doesn't matter."

"...," she let him go and looked down.
She then carefully picked her bag up and got out of the car.

He opened the drivers door and quickly got out too, "I'm sorry, are you angry with me? Sarah, we must stay together."

"...," she remained silent. She wasn't angry. She was just hurt. She wasn't to just be left alone and take a breather.

"Sarah, please.....I know you probably want to be alone right now, it's just, I can't leave you by yourself out here. I'd prefer if you sat in the car and I'll wait outside, to give you space..."

"...we have to go on foot do we? I'm not stopping 'till I find my father." She said still walking down the road.

"Yes we do, because the engine has seized up. Are you blaming me for that? Because it's damaged beyond repair."

"...no...it's...it's nothing," she lied. She wanted to protect him, but he didn't want her protection? Maybe she really wasn't suppose to have these powers. Maybe she should've stayed for her father to take the watch away from her then.

He sighed as he continued to walk beside her, "you're entitled to your private thoughts, but I can tell a lie when I hear one," he said sadly.

"...," she looked down sadly not wanting to talk.

They finally came back to Storybrooke, but she felt like it was no use to be here if there were walking corpses around. Soon they got to her house and she opened it carefully. Maybe a little bit of hope, he came back now? No. Mr. Gold and Belle were nowhere around.

Abbe went inside with her to check the house was safe, but he remained silent. He decided he shouldn't bother her with talking when she didn't want to.

She then came up to the answer machine and saw two messages. She played them. It was her parents.

Abbe stepped out into the hall to allow her privacy to listen to her messages.

"Sarah sweetie, if you're hearing this message, we want you to know that we're okay...," Belle said in the message, tearfully, "and I know you will be too, I believe I can sense it. But we're having to leave now. It-it's not safe here anymore. I love you so much, peanut."

Gold then spoke in the second message,  "sweetheart, I will come and find you I promise. I'm not mad at you, your mother and I love you so much and just want you to be safe. So I will find you, I won't give up I swear."

She then broke down crying hearing their voices.  They were alive. And hearing their voices made her feel a little more hope. And even more, her father was coming.

Abbe heard her crying and slowly opened the door to check she was okay. She clearly wasn't. He went to her with his hanky, feeling anxious.
"It.....it isn't bad news is it?"

"No...they are alright...my dad is coming to find me..."

He breathed a sigh of relief, "that's wonderful. So they are safe and he is searching for you. God willing, you will all be reunited soon."

She teared up happily and hugged him. He smiled and hugged her back. Seeing how happy she was he lifted her slightly and spun her around, "you will see them again soon! And my faith has been restored....in truth, I was beginning to lose faith back there in the car, but now my prayers have been answered."

She teared up looking at him and giggled, "thank you."

"For what? I haven't done anything, silly," he chuckled and gently tapped the tip of her nose with his finger.

"You prayed for them...and they are safe."

"That's what I do," he shrugged slightly, "so you don't have to thank me for that. It's my duty."

She just blushed looking down.

"...listen, I want to apologize for upsetting you earlier. It wasn't my intention. Am I forgiven?"

She smiled and kissed his cheek, "you're forgiven."

"Thank you, I just hope God forgives me for beginning to lose faith," he then took her hands ".....as a priest, I usually listen to people confess their sins.....but, perhaps I could confide in you, if you wouldn't mind?"

Sarah blushed, he must've not known Reverend Hale's teaching yet about confessing. She then smiled, "well...from what I learned from Mr Hale...he said if you ask God for forgiveness He will still forgive you, even if you don't confide to a priest. Because God can hear anywhere."

He smiled slightly, "I know, and I've made my peace with God over something that happened to me in my past....I'd just like to tell you, so that you understand why I was beginning to lose faith earlier. But I understand if you would rather not know. I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

"...oh...well you can tell me—," she noticed something behind him and pulled him away. Her eyes were wide open seeing a corpse. She grabbed the chair and rammed it at the corpse, "RAAAHHH!" She screamed as she rammed the chair at the corpse's gut and it's back against the wall. The corpse stumbled back and fell over. Coulmier then grabbed the poke he'd been carrying around with him and raised it above his head ready to hit it. But Sarah didn't stop and stomped the corpse on the head, "Stay. Away. From. Him!!!"

The corpse grunted from the force of her stomping on it. It tried to crawl away to the door to leave and get away from her. Abbe was in shock seeing this. He'd never seen such strength from her like that or for a Walker to cower in fear and try to run away. She managed to kill it and was catching her breath. Her face was covered in black ink from the corpse.

Abbe quickly dragged the corpse outside and then locked the door. He used his hanky to wipe her face clean.

".....Sarah, that was... incredible! Where did you find such strength? Such courage? You're a very brave girl."

"...I guess I get it...from my dad."

".....," he then smiled, "well, thank you. You saved my life."

"Well I told you...I want to protect you too..." they looked into each others eyes and were about to kiss when they heard groans and the corpses broke in the house. "No!!!"

He gently pushed her behind him, "do you want to run? Or do you think we can fight them off between us?"

"...," she grabbed his arm and ran the back way. The corpses chased them groaning.

He caught hold of her hand and they ran as fast as they could through the back yard, "...you know this town, Sarah. Where do you think might be a safe place to go?"

She looked around, but it looked like everything was invaded. She turned to him tearing up, "we can't stay here..."

He nodded and gripped her hand tighter as they ran faster into the woods and through the trees. He then had a thought, ".....wait... the reverend Hale told me this town had docks? That means boats....if we could find one boat and anchor it offshore, we'd be safe from the creatures. I don't think they can swim."

They ran to the docks but where were the boats? They weren't here," Hook must've taken them."

"All of them?? That's not possible. Surely there's a rowing boat at least? Is there anywhere in the sheds that boats are kept?"

She ran in, but all the supplies were gone some broken.

"It makes no sense to have taken all the boats," he shook his head, angrily, "I don't know where else we can go to find shelter and be safe from these monsters."

Suddenly she found a boat hidden behind a building laying upside down so she run over and lifted up, but shocked to see a boy around her age underneath it, "DONT KILL ME I'M NOT A ZOMBIE!"

Abbe took the boat from her and carefully began to turn it over, "Sarah, please, check the boy over for injuries whilst I get this into the water..."

"I-I-I am not injured really I was hiding from them."

"Then what's your name?"

"M-Marcus...I'm Marcus..."

After a short while Abbe managed to lower the boat into the water without damaging it.

"Alright, let's go."

Once they came to him he helped Marcus down into the boat and then Sarah, before climbing down into it himself. He then pulled up the anchor and he steered it away from the dockside.

Sarah turned to Marcus. She never seen him before. "Where did you come from?"

"...New York...one of the places that started the testing of the Lazarus Cure..."

"How did you get here all the way from New York?" Abbe asked him.

"...I drove here...the outbreak there started days before here. I can tell because...they gotten stronger back in New York...here they are weaker, but not for long. They get stronger and stronger if no one kills them...."

"New York?" Sarah instantly remembered someone form there. Her father, Emma, and Henry went there to find her older brother and Henry's father which is how she found out she was Henry's aunt even though they were the same age. "You know anyone named Baelfire? Or at least, Neal Gold?"

"No...I'm sorry. I don't. You have a picture of him?"

She teared up and shook her head.

"It's a very large city, Sarah. I can't imagine the chances of two strangers knowing each other and winding up in this town would be high. Try not to let whatever it is upset you. Right now we need to focus on what we're going to do about this entire situation. Maybe there's a way we can beat the monsters."

"There isn't...there is no cure...but even if they make it, they wouldn't care. They made that...Lazarus Cure and it turned out to be a curse." Marcus told them.

"So there's no cure. But the monsters are still killable. There has to be a way of beating them. Even if there has to be a war between them and those of us who are still human. I'm a man of God, so do not condone war or violence, but I would rather fight to the death than sit back and let them overrun the country."

"...even if you kill them...they come back days later...I know because...it was my sister...she was only 10."

Abbe sighed and looked down, resting his head in his hands ".....I'm sorry. So.....this is it. The end of humanity. Of earth as we know it."

Sarah then dropped her head down tearing. Then it hit her. Wraith was warning her father about this, the government not listening to the riots...God was punishing them.

"I am not religious sir, but...I do feel like the big man upstairs is not happy with us," Marcus added.

"...," he shook his head, "it's not something I want to accept, that He would forsake us in our hour of need....if that is true then....I've wasted my entire life serving Him," he reached inside his shirt and pulled out a locket. It contained a photograph of Maddie. Her mother had given it to him. He gazed down at the picture, tearing up.

Sarah looked at him worriedly and held his wrist. "Abbe?"

Sarah then stopped and saw the photo. He had someone. She swallowed tearing up. She quickly let go and dropped her head down. Anne Marie peeked her head out and licked her nose.

He noticed she let go of his wrist, "I'm sorry Sarah. I'm feeling rather melancholy at the moment. You see, this young lady in the picture....?" he showed her the locket, "......I let her down and she...she died and I should've protected her. I've always carried the guilt with me. Her mother blamed me. But then I met you and knew instantly that I wouldn't fail to protect you.....now it looks like I have failed. If there's no hope."

"...," she didn't look and was hurt all over again. "I want my papa." She choked on her tears.

"I will help you find him if I can. I won't give up until you're reunited with your family."

"...," Sarah didn't look at him. He obviously still had feelings for this woman. Even though she was long gone. She broke down and Marcus rubbed her back trying to comfort her. Anne Marie then went to Couldmier and sat on his lap.

Coulmier was confused, he held the little kitten tightly and tickled behind her ears, feeling hurt. Why was Sarah rejecting him like this? She couldn't even bring herself to look at him. Not even after all they had been through. She clearly believed that he had let her down too.

"Tomorrow I will go ashore and search for Sarah's father," he then said, "You must remain here with her Marcus, where you'll both be safe."

Marcus nodded, "yes sir."

He nodded and smiled slightly, "thank you. Now. Perhaps you should both get some rest. I'll watch over things."

Sarah sniffled and rubbed her eyes. Marcus tried to, but Sarah, she couldn't.

Abbe noticed and stood, taking Anne Marie to her. He set the kitten down in her lap, "she will comfort you, her presence might help you sleep."

"...you still love her...don't you? The woman in the photo?"

He froze, "Madeline? I loved her as a child of God. The problem was she....she thought she fell in love with me. I would not be with her, I told her it was best if she moved away. Then she was murdered."

"...," Sarah looked down, "that's not I am asking. You have a photo of her...was she a lover also? Or did you fall for her also and wanted to be with her?"

He sighed and dragged his hands through his hair, "...she was never my lover. I took a vow of celibacy back in France. Do you know what that means, Sarah?"

"...n-no?" She froze, but she had a feeling she did.

"In order to be a catholic priest you have to dedicate your life to serving God, which means no getting married, or making love," he blushed "I took my vows seriously. I cared for Madeline. I did start to develop feelings for her but.....since then I realized it was not romantic love. I loved her like a teacher loves their student. I helped her learn to read and write, I was proud of her. I was curious what it would be like if we became romantically involved. But I wasn't in love with her. So no. I'm not. I keep her picture as a reminder, to never forget that I need to make amends for failing to save her. That is all."

".....," Sarah then felt bad for him. She was a Christian and hearing he was Catholic...and that he can't marry or make love really broke her heart. She really liked him. Like a lot. More than a friend. She dropped her head down.

"Mr Hale got married...he married Sister Mary Josephine...she was Catholic from New England, but became a Christian. Just like Mr Hale...and...n-nevermind," she dropped her head.

He nodded "I know. That is why I came here. To study Christianity. I'm no longer a catholic priest. I'm a Christian, so....the vows of abstinence no longer stand."

She turned to him. Did that mean he could get married? She didn't know, but she also want to try to respect him. She then wrapped her arms around him. He wrapped his arms around her too and pulled her close, "Please don't push me away again, Sarah. I don't know what I did wrong, but I'm sorry. I never want to displease you."

"...I-I guess I was jealous...and then when I thought you were Catholic...I sensed you wouldn't love...," she dropped her head down.

"Even if I were Catholic I am still human, Sarah. Still a man, capable of wanting love, and falling in love. But being Christian makes it easier. So I don't have to try and fight the feelings."

She blushed and he brushed her cheek gently. She looked up at him. Suddenly the boat jerked as if something bumped it. She gripped on him shaking. She hated the ocean. She feared sharks.

Marcus snorted waking up from the jerk.

"It's alright....try not to panic. It's probably just the tide turning," Coulmier tried to calm her down. He held onto her gently. He thought Marcus was looking at them both curiously, which made him blush, but he didn't let go. He wanted to keep her calm.

Marcus sat up rubbing his head, "what's happening?"

Suddenly the boat jerked again. It felt rougher then before.

"...that's not the tide man...," Marcus panicked.

"No no no," Sarah started to panic and shaking her head.

"Sarah, it's alright. Breathe deeply, look at me..." he held her face, "trust me. We'll be alright, we're going to head back inland a ways, alright?"

Ann Marie then gripped on Marcus shirt and suddenly the whole boat tipped and Sarah screamed. The three of them fell in the water.

Couldmier gasped lifting his head up holding onto Sarah's bag. He noticed Marcus swimming back to the dock and the kitten was on his shoulder, but where was Sarah. Suddenly he heard her screaming under the boat. She then was pulled into the water. He hurriedly dived down beneath the water, he swam towards her and caught hold of her hand.

But whatever grabbed her by her legs pulled her down further. He then grabbed her waist and pulled her away. He found out what was holding her. It was a shark. She was now loosing oxygen and slowly went limb in Coulmier's arms.

He held onto her and quickly swam up to the surface. He reached the side of the docks and called to Marcus to help lift her from the water. Once they were both out he laid her down, "do you think she needs the kiss of life?"

"...uh...," Marcus blushed.

Anne Marie came to her and licked her face and Sarah coughed up the water out of her.

Abbe carefully sat her up, "Sarah! Thank God you're alright....I was just about to do something drastic."

Sarah coughed more. She then turned to Couldmier. And then up at Marcus, but suddenly she immediately felt pain. She looked and saw her ankles were bleeding. She shivered and was about to pass out. "Marcus, keep her talking so she doesn't pass out."

Marcus did what he told trying to keep her awake as Abbe removed his jacket and ripped the sleeves, making bandages for her ankles. He stemmed the blood flow and bound them up tightly. He then carefully picked her up in his arms, "we need to find somewhere else to shelter. We can't stay out here. I need ideas, Marcus, I'm new to town."

"...I don't know much about this town."

"...o-out...of town...," Sarah groaned.

Marcus picked up the kitten and put Sarah's bag on him. "I guess out of town?"

"Let's find a car that's been left unlocked. Many people would've left their cars in a panic. I can...Hotwire it to start it."

"...my...parents'...garage...try...," she groaned.

He nodded. He knew where the house was so they hurried there. Marcus followed them and soon they got back to the house. Marcus carefully opened the garage without making noise and Couldmier didn't have to hotwire it. It had keys inside and unlocked. The corpses were more active at night and chased them but kept missing. Sarah groaned softly looking around and soon she fell back and everything went black.
