Jealousy
"Hey, what was that all about?" Hattori pulled the detective to the side, trapping him against the coffee table so that he wouldn't run away.
"What are you talking about?" Kudo sighed, tired. The case they just had was rather draining. Fun, but draining.
"You know, with Kuroba. You guys seemed pretty close," he was careful with his tone, yet his facial features showed otherwise.
"And?" The boy raised an eyebrow. "We just met, we're friends, what does it matter?" Hattori held his breath before he backed away.
"Nothing." He hadn't confessed yet. He planned on it, but figured it would've been best if he kept quiet. At first he thought it was too obvious that he had some amount of feelings, but turns out the detective was rather dense.
How funny.
Shinichi grabbed his cup of coffee and simply stared, confused. "Okay? Um, do you want some coffee?" The boy asked as he poured a cup and some sugar. Hattori waved his hand as he shook his head no.
"Nah, I'm good. I'm gonna take a nap instead. Wake me up in half an hour!" He shouted from across the house as his voice became more faint. The boy sighed as he took a sip. His faced scrunched up in a form of disgust, showing visible regret.
"Ah, it's too sweet."

Class ended and Hakuba had called them.
"Wanna hang out again? Lunch was cut short last time."
"Hakuba's asking if we should hang out again," Kudo reiterated. Hattori hesitated, but wanted to know what was up with the magician and the detective.
"Sure, why not?" Kudo, oblivious to the plan, simply went back to his phone call and responded.
"Yup, Hattori's down." Kudo then smiled before he hung up and put his phone away. "Apparently Kuroba has been excited to show us a new trick he learned," he looked up at Hattori. "It's pretty interesting huh? Magic," the boy spoke almost sarcastically, his smile still imprinted on his face. He was never the biggest fan of magic tricks, in fact, neither of them were. Yet despite this they both enjoyed breaking up each trick and figuring them out.
The Osaka detective on the other hand, frowned. The other noticed and mirrored his expression.
"What's wrong?" The boy simply shook his head before faking a grin.
"Nah, just remembering how you figured out the case before me. You know how I am. I just want the glory to myself sometimes," he struck a dramatic pose before chuckling, staring back at the detective, thinking some thoughts he secretly hoped would come true.
Kudo glared at him before teasing him, clearly unaware of his stare. "Hehe, no need to be so salty. You know, there's always next time!" He nudged his back. "Let's hurry! We're gonna be late!"
~~
"So, that's it! Are you surprised?" Kuroba put his hands up to show that he had nothing attached to his hands, behind his hands, nor on his sleeves. The two detectives looked at each other as if to confirm something before they looked back with a mischievous grin.
"We figured it out!" They spoke at the same time. Kuroba kept his smirk as he stared at them, a face that requested an explanation.
Shinichi spoke first, then Hattori followed. They excitedly explained each step, their hands following what they were saying despite no card in hand. The two finished explaining before looking at each other with a bright smile on their faces.
"So?" They turned to Kuroba. "Did we get it?" The magician had the same face before turning to Hakuba.
"What on earth are they?" His poker face then dropped. "There's no way these two are human." Shinichi gleamed with joy as he raised his hand to high five the other detective. Hattori reciprocated the response. Hakuba simply shrugged as he took a sip of his coffee.
"Amazing aren't they? Though not better than me of course," he spoke ever so elegantly. Kuroba glared at him.
"Why, 'cause you have a slight suspicion that I'm Kid? Yeah no, if anything you're worse," he spoke sarcastically, making a lighthearted comment, careful not to offend anyone. He glanced over at Shinichi and the Osaka detective noticed.
"So, who managed to solve the case first? Or was it at the same time again?" Hakuba broke the moment of silence.
"Kudo corrected my reasoning at the end. Turns out the blood found on the carpet wasn't from self defense, it was on purpose to frame the landlady," the boy explained, his eyes not leaving the magician, who's eyes never left the detective in front of him.
"Really?"
"Yeah," Shinichi started, oblivious to the situation at hand. "It would have made sense with the evidence that was given, but still something was missing. Eventually I found another piece of evidence that actually broke because Hattori stepped on it," Shinichi giggled while also carrying a worried expression. "That's probably why we couldn't solve it at first."
Hakuba let out a chuckle.
"Sounds like you," he directed to the Detective of the West. "You were always in a hurry to solve a case, you never were careful," he clicked his tongue in disappointment, taunting him. It was only then he noticed who he was looking at, and who that person was staring at.
"Hey," Hattori broke eye contact to look at him. "I'm not so bad."
"Yeah, if it wasn't for Hattori, I wouldn't have found the evidence," Shinichi chimed in, still oblivious.
"Well I'm lost," Kuroba broke eye contact and shifted his attention to Hattori's left, landing on a bird in the background. "I'll leave the detective talk to you guys." The three of them inadvertently let out a chuckle as Kuroba then got up and excused himself. "While I'm at it, might as well get some more cake."
Now at this point, Hakuba was intrigued. Hattori seemed to be preoccupied with the magician and the magician with Shinichi, but he couldn't seem to put a finger on it.
"Hey," Kudo asked for his attention. "You know, you might not be so far off with your deduction." Hattori looked questioningly towards the boy.
"What deduction? The one where he thinks that guy is Kid?" The blond took a sip of his coffee, waiting for his reasoning.
"Yeah, but," the detective frowned. "I don't know, I want to say that he's rather similar to the thief. But I don't have anything concrete to prove my suspicions." The other two seemed to have agreed to disagree.
"Well," Hakuba started. "We are detectives. While there is logic and reasoning, sometimes there's a gut feeling to it. Similarly to saying how someone is a person's lover. While there might be evidence, there isn't real proof to say that they are lovers, correct?" Hattori seemed to have reacted and the boy caught it. He triumphantly smiled inside.
So that's how it was.
It didn't seem as though the boy himself knew what it was though.
"Well then Hattori," he focused on him. "What about you? What might your gut be telling you?" The Osaka detective tensed, feeling as though this question had nothing to do with Kuroba being Kid.
"Well uh," he was stumped. "You're right Kudo," he avoided Hakuba's question, diverting his attention to the boy next to him. "How's this gut feeling telling ya that Kuroba is Kid?" Before Shinichi could answer, the blonde jumped in with a statement which felt like a demand.
"You're the one who worked with Kid the most at this table. Instead of telling me how similar they might be, tell me the differences."
"Well-"
"And I'm back! What'd I miss?" The magician spoke while bringing back a mountain of pastries and another cup of iced black coffee, his voice scaring the poor birds surrounding them. The three of them just stared before shaking their heads and brushing off the topic.
"Nothing much. Aside from the usual detective talk, nothing new," Hakuba spoke unperturbed.
Kuroba shrugged.
"Wow," he sighed, exaggeratedly. "You guys are no fun."
So the four talked about random things, from magic tricks to detective work, to school. The four of them smiled, giggled, even cried from laughing too hard. It was until that final moment, that Hattori was left clueless to this one feeling. It wasn't until Kuroba grabbed Kudo's hands and intertwined their fingers to explain a trick that well, did the trick.
'Ah,' he told himself.
I'm jealous.
