Doves

The door rang once more and Hattori held in a groan. He backed off in defeat and let Kudo go and answer the door. Internally, the Detective of the East was disappointed at such awful timing. He evened his breathing as he walked towards the front door. Behind him, he could hear Hattori scowl under his breath and footsteps following his direction. In all honesty, Shinichi had no idea who would be at the front door. He didn't have any prior appointments and it seemed odd that the police would come back without a phone call. He opened the door to greet this mysterious guest.

"Ah!" Shinichi exclaimed. "Ran, Kazuha!" He smiled, surprised at their appearance. Kazuha stayed in Osaka and Ran had been offered a job as a cook in a family friend's cafe. They both shared an apartment since it was convenient, much like Shinichi and Hattori.

Well, sort of.

"How are you guys!" Shinichi asked and Hattori popped out from the side of the door, dumbfounded. He definitely didn't expect them.

"Eh? Kazuha? What're ya doin' here?" The girl grinned.

"Just checkin' up on ya!" Ran chuckled and joined in.

"Yeah! It's been a long while since we all caught up!" Shinichi was glad about meeting up with his childhood friend. On the other hand, Hattori was preoccupied with his utter disappointment.

'So close yet so far,' a little voice rang in his head. He forced a smile. "Well, come inside!" They all made way to the dining room table, since both the girls had bags full of snacks and souvenirs. The detective of the West was the last to enter and saw how Kudo was chatting with the girls without a care, as if what happened moments before never happened.

He swallowed that feeling of jealousy that suddenly creeped and sat at the table, next to the other detective.

"So the case was solved pretty quickly, right Hattori?" Instinctively, he nodded.

"Ho oh, Heiji being working with another detective?  Whatever happened to the one who wanted to be the best detective around?" Hattori scoffed and shook his head.

"'Ey! I'll still be the best detective around. I'm just... ya know," he trailed off and looked away from Kazuha, avoiding eye contact. After a beat of silence, they all laughed. It felt like it had been forever since they last had a conversation like this.

"Ah," Shinichi started off, now realizing how rude he was. "I should get you something to drink!" He got up to get a few cups. Hattori got up to join him.

"Kazuha water? We don't got anythin' else really," he spoke while getting a large bottle of water. He set the bottle down before roaming the fridge to see if they had anything else to drink. Aside from coffee, there really wasn't any.

"If that's what you have, we'll gladly take it," Ran responded. Kudo grabbed four cups for all of them and proceeded to the table, but when Hattori stood a little too close to the boy on the way back, Kudo briefly remembered what had moments moments before near that coffee table.

Not noticing, Hattori just followed, unfazed.

Now Ran and Kazuha weren't idiots. They saw how clear it was that something was going on between them. Now the what of it, was the million dollar question.

"So, Shinichi," the boy perked at the sound of his name. He raised his eyebrow as he poured everyone a cup of water. "How are you both lately? Anything new?" The Osaka detective's first thought was how he had professed his feelings and how supposedly, Kudo felt the same. On the other hand, the Tokyo detective thought about the suspicious note that was left on their table.

Hattori knew he couldn't say what he was thinking, and Shinichi was conflicted about his. He didn't want to worry the girl, but still felt as though she should know. After all, they are childhood friends.

"Well, today we," he looked over at Hattori to see if he was on board with him saying anything. The other didn't really respond any way. "Uh, we got a note. There seems to be someone out there threatening us. Sort of..." he trailed off, unsure of what to say.

This wasn't really the news Ran and Kazuha were looking for, but it certainly wasn't news they wanted to hear. After all, detective work seemed to make a lot of enemies, especially after what happened with the Black Organization.

"Do you know who it is?" Ran asked, worried. He shook his head and shrugged.

"Not sure, but we know it has to be someone we know and have encountered before. After all, they did mention that one of us have captured them before." The two of them furrowed their brows, visibly concerned. Hattori felt like he should lighten the mood, so began to laugh with a grin before putting an arm around the other.

"Hey! It's okay since Kudo and I will definitely catch the guy!" Neither of them looked convinced, but knowing both of their stubbornness, they wouldn't be able to say anything to convince them to step away. "Anyhow," he stood up. "It's gettin' late and I gotta sleep. Long day today." Kazuha looked at her watch.

"Yeah I guess," she groaned. "Please be safe ya two." Her glare caused the two of them to laugh wryly, knowing if either of them got hurt, the two of them would certainly kill them. Somehow these two women were much scarier than any serial killer they have ever encountered.

"Bye then!" The two of them bid their farewells before walking in the direction of the train station.

Shinichi put the four cups away. He didn't wash them yet, since exhaustion finally caught up with him. Normally it wouldn't be so bad, but stressing over what happened early in the morning took a toll on him. He walked over to the couch to sit down and read. He wanted to at least finish the chapter he was on.

Before he could open the book, Hattori sat next to him and grabbed his attention.

"Kiss me." Startled at the sudden request, Shinichi dropped his book and stared for a solid second. "If you," he paused for a moment as he hesitated. "If you truly feel the same, kiss me."

Kudo stared at his lips and thought about the request. A hand wrapped around the nape of Hattori's neck, bringing him in.

Then finally, he experienced the bliss he was waiting for.

Hattori practically melted at the touch of his skin, the taste of his lips, the heat of his beloved. His hand mirrored Kudo's, bringing him in. His other hand burrowed into the other's hair as he tugged and devoured the detective. If he wasn't feeling greedy then, he most certainly was now.

Oh how his kisses tasted sweet. Shinichi's only concern being how loud his heart was beating. While mapping each other's mouths were the last thing on his to do list, it was the highlight of his day.

"Hattori," he whispered his name as he left a trail of kisses down his neck to his collarbone. His hands then trailed down to Kudo's back as he applied pressure, signaling him to lie down on his back. Kudo traced his fingers down Hattori's back before focusing entirely on what the other was doing. A soft sound escaped his mouth and Hattori savored that blissful sound.

Shinichi was pleasantly surprised with what the other was doing.  The soft kisses and the general theme of the situation.  Though if he were being honest, this was the first time he had ever done something like this and he had no idea what he was doing.  When Hattori had stopped and went back for a kiss, he had hoped that he wouldn't notice that he was a complete beginner at everything.

Hattori noticed. But he didn't care.   His one and only detective was in front of him, kissing him, holding him, and holy crap he was kissing him and holding him and-

Shinichi broke the kiss the breathe for a moment. The other smiled brightly like a child which triggered a laugh.  It didn't take long before the other joined in on the laugh.

"You are so beautiful." While it was indeed supposed to be a romantic compliment, Kudo only replied with a slight attack on the head.

"Idiot," he flushed a shade of red.  "How's a guy supposed to be beautiful." Hattori grinned again before kissing him and soon getting off.

"Let's brush our teeth.  I wanna sleep," he yawned, stretching his arms. Hattori faced Kudo's direction with a hand out, and glanced out the window.  It was night and the sky was clear, the stars just beaming. Normally he would just stop there and look away, but a small bird caught his eye. It was a dove that simply perched itself onto the windowsill.  He stared at it before it flew away.

'Must be a sign,' he thought before grinning. As soon as Shinichi grabbed his hand, the other pulled him in.  Shinichi glared at him.

"What are you grinning at?"

"Hehe, nothin'. Come on, I'm tired." Kudo followed him to the bathroom.

"Yes yes, you mentioned that already."

And so they enjoyed a quiet night.
