Chapter 6
"So Ben, I was wondering, how was it like growing up here and what made you leave?"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm asking why you would leave this amazing place." Rey sighed as she mixed up the cake batter.
"It's hard to explain."
"It shouldn't be that hard." Rey sighed before pouring the batter into the pan. "You had everything."
Ben scoffed, turning away. "It may have seemed like that but it isn't true."
"Care to elaborate Solo?"
He took a deep breath before turning to face her. "My parents are adored in this town, everyone looks up to them and respects them. Then I was born. Since I was the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo I was basically "destined" to do great things." He paused for a moment. Rey glanced at him, her eyes shining with curiosity.
"During my years I was expected to be their perfect little child. So that's what I tried to be, problem was? It wasn't me. I tried so hard but all I could do was mess up. I worried about what others thought of me rather than my well being. In middle school I lost many friends and my grades plummeted. One more reason why Ben Solo isn't "Han and Leias perfect child." His eyes were sad.
"How'd you get involved with The First Order?"
"It started in high school. I was excited for high school, a place where I could have a fresh start. Freshman year was amazing, I had some friends, my grades were improving and I won the affections of the girl I liked at the time. It was going great. Then everything collapsed by sophomore year. I met Hux that year and I remember him introducing me to Snoke. Saying I would be a good "recruit." I remember his promises. He would promise me what I only dreamed of: power, respect, and most importantly belonging. All my life I had wanted to belong and it was finally in my reach."
"Didn't you realize he was bad news? I mean if you did —"
Ben shook his head. "Think about it, Rey. Imagine someone offering your greatest desire in exchange for joining them. Would you join them?" He narrowed his eyes.
"Uh well —"
"See? He offered me my greatest desire so of course I went along. I had wanted this sense of belonging so badly. That started the several years that I would be working loyally by his side."
Rey caught eyes with him her eyes sad. "I understand how you feel." She placed her into his.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry too."
