Chapter 6: The Unexpected

"Wake up! Wake up!" I heard Sofia say and she was jumping on our bed.

"Five more minutes..." Dylan said and put his head under his pillow.

Derek and Sofia laughed and I sat up. "Is Daddy being silly again?" I asked and put my hands on my hips.

They nodded and Dylan quickly got out from under his pillow, grabbed Derek and started to tickle him. "Tickle fight!" Dylan yelled and Derek was laughing so hard.

I grabbed Sofia and started to tickle her too and she started to laugh as well.

I looked over at Dylan and a huge smile was plastered on his face. Sofia then jumped on top of me and I pulled her into an embrace. Derek did the same thing to Dylan.

We pulled away and Derek came to give me a hug, and Sofia gave Dylan one.

"Ready for breakfast?" I asked and they nodded. "Alright, let's go!" I said and picked up Derek and Dylan picked up Sofia. We went downstairs and had breakfast.

After breakfast, Dylan said, "Derek, do you want to get ready to play baseball?"

"Yes! I'm so excited!" Derek said while skipping to the staircase. He ran up the stairs and Dylan said, "I'll go help him," and he kissed my cheek as he passed by me.

"So, Sofia, what do you want to do while Daddy and Derek are playing baseball?"

"We'll have a tea party!" She exclaimed.

Dylan's POV

I put Derek's baseball hat on his head and said, "You're all set!"

"I'm ready!" Derek said and pretended to hit a baseball.

I laughed and we went downstairs.

"Look at my little baseball player," Nicole said and kissed the top of his head. "Have fun!"

"See you later, sweetie," I said and hugged Nicole and then bent down to give Sofia a hug.

Then Derek and I walked to the baseball park because it was right around the corner.

Derek stepped onto home base with his bat and helmet on and I was on the pitcher's mound. "Ready little monkey?"

He nodded in response and I threw the first pitch and he missed. He looked upset and I said, "Don't worry, that was just a warm up."

He nodded again and I threw the next pitch. He swung and hit the ball and it went soaring far out on the field. Derek was watching it, but then I said, "Run!" And he smiled and started to run around the bases. I tried to catch the ball, but he made it back to home before I could reach him.

I walked over to him and gave him a high five. "Good job, Derek!"

"I couldn't have done it without your help, Daddy!" He said and took his helmet off. "Now you try to hit it!" He said and handed me the bat.

I took it from him but I couldn't wear the helmet because it was too small for me.

"Ready?" Derek asked as he was getting ready to throw the ball.

"Yup!" I replied.

Derek threw it and I hit it. I ran to first base, but then Derek caught it on my way to second and Derek yelled, "Out!"

I was amazed by the talent he had for a five year old.

"You're amazing, Derek!" I said and gave him a hug. "Do you want to join a league?"

"That would be my dream!" Derek said with a surprised expression on his face.

"Then let's do it! Once we get home, we can sign you up!"

"THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!" Derek said and ran in circles. I laughed and we continued to play baseball.

After another hour, we walked back home and as we entered the house, I yelled, "We are home!"

Sofia came down the stairs and ran to give Derek a hug. Then Nicole came down the stairs and stood next to me and I wrapped my arm around her waist.

"We are going to sign Derek up for a little league," I said.

"That's great!" Nicole said. "Let's go do that now!" She said as we all walked to the office.

I logged into the computer and went to the website for little leagues in New York.

I signed Derek up and the screen was loading. Then it said that the team Derek was on was called The Little Mets.

"That's awesome!" I said and high fived Derek.

"I'm so excited to start!" Derek said.

"It says here that practices start in two weeks," Nicole said and turned to Derek. "I can't wait to see you play!" And she ruffled his hair.

We hung out and played the rest of the day and before I knew it, it was time for the kids to go to sleep.

Nicole's POV

After we said goodnight, Dylan and I went into our room. Dylan sat on the edge of our bed and I sat on his lap and pressed my lips onto his.

He pulled away and asked, "What's this for?"

"Because I love you," I said and continued to kiss him. Then I got off his lap and laid down on the bed and Dylan pulled his body on top of mine and started to kiss my neck. I moaned a little and pulled him closer and kissed his lips. He then deepened the kiss.

We went to sleep with my back towards him and his arms were wrapped around my waist. My hands were on top of his arms.

"Good night Nicole," Dylan said and kissed the back of my neck.

It sent chills down my spine, and I replied, "Love you Dyl, sweet dreams."

In the middle of the night, I heard Sofia crying and I woke up. I said to Dylan, "Sofia is crying, I'm going to check up on her,"and I started to get out of bed.

"Okay..." He said and yawned.

I walked into Sofia's room and turned on the light. "Sofia, what's-" I gasped and ran over to her bed.

There was blood everywhere and she was crying hysterically.

"Sweetie..." I said and realized she was having an extreme nose bleed.

I scooped her up and craddled her and quickly went to our room.

"Dylan!" I said and he sat up quickly.

"Oh my gosh!" He said and got out of our bed. I gently put Sofia in Dylan's arms and said, "I'm going to get some tissues!" And ran out of our room and into the bathroom. I grabbed the tissue box and went back to Sofia and Dylan.

Dylan was sitting on the floor with Sofia in his lap. I gave the box to Dylan and he started to hold tissues up to her nose.

Then Sofia started to scream. "Does it hurt?" Dylan asked and held up more tissues.

She nodded and said, "Really badly..." And she screamed again.

"Damn..." Dylan whispered. His hands were covered in her blood.

"We should take her to the hospital, it's not stopping," I suggested.

Dylan nodded and Sofia continued to cry.

"I'll call Aunt Cassie so she can watch over Derek," I said and grabbed my phone.

I quickly dialed Aunt Cassie's phone number and I heard it ring. I looked over at Dylan and he was cradling Sofia in his lap constantly applying tissues to her bleeding nose.

I couldn't tell if she was going to pick up the phone because it was 2:00 am. "Please pick up, please pick up," I whispered and tears fell down my face.

I looked at Dylan and Sofia again and Sofia was starting to spit blood out of her mouth as well. "Shhh, it's going to be okay...it's going to be okay," Dylan said and stroked his hands through her hair. Sofia was crying hysterically and I made eye contact with Dylan and he was crying too. I quickly looked away because I couldn't handle seeing this happen and more tears came rushing down my cheeks.

"Hello?" I heard Aunt Cassie say and she sounded really tired.

"Hi Aunt Cassie...it's Nicole...please come over quick-quickly..." I said in-between tears and my voice was starting to get shaky. "We need to bring S-Sofia to the hospital, c-can you watch over Derek?"

I heard silence and then, "I'm so sorry...I'll be over in a minute!" And then she hung up.

I then dropped my phone and collapsed onto the floor and hid my face in my hands and continued to cry.
