Chapter 8

Everything happened so quickly.

Soph couldn't process everything while being quickly dressed and rushed to the car as if the house was gonna explode any minute now.

She almost expected something to happen while she looked back, the house being farther and farther away as the car moved forward.

Nothing happened.

The bird she found that morning laid on her lap, chirping it's melody softly, you can somewhat hear it. she didn't know where she was going or why they were in the car in the first place.

She couldn't ask Sarah because it seemed like she didn't know either. her questions wouldn't stop coming out of her curious mouth and Demo couldn't answer all of them.

Only some though.

This car ride was boring, she got to admit. She pressed her head against the cold window, causing goosebumps to appear on her skin. it's not like it bothered her, however.

She believed these were normal since it's winter.

Soph let out a sigh a closed her eyes, despite waking up an hour ago. she was waking a bit too early and then she remembered how Burt reacted. he reacted the same way as a normal person would react to sleeping problems at a young age.

Who wouldn't, honestly?

Trying to sleep was rather difficult. the sunlight was causing her to see bright orange instead of black, plus the car wasn't making it any easier.

But a child like her can surely sleep through that, right?

Maybe. I've seen countless children do it and it downright scares me.

She wasn't any different. when it felt like they were arriving to their destination, she fell into a slumber, the bright orange faded away, the noises were tuned out and now, all she could do is dream.

                                                                        ---------------------------

Strange.

She woke up, her face being pressed against dirt. she quickly sat up, removing the dirt from her check. it seemed to night time and she was no longer inside a car.

She was outside, on a field specifically.

This place seems too familiar, even though she never been here before. she could see the full moon, with no clouds to cover it.

The grass felt tall, however the last time she checked, grass isn't tall. then again, it could be tall if it wanted to. guess that's why people cut it so it won't grow like crazy in their backyard.

Again, she doesn't know if this is true or not.

Another odd thing that should be pointed out is how she woke up while sitting on her knees. have she fallen asleep while being on her knees? Soph slowly got up to her feet and looked around.

There was only tall grass surrounding her. the field looks rather beautiful because of the few flowers planted around. the small girl looked behind to see a clear exit. a perfect path with no bumps, rocks nor puddles. It looked clear and smooth.

It's not like Soph wanted to leave anyway. her body wouldn't let her and the nostalgia was suddenly taking hold.

Even though she was alone, she didn't feel afraid like she normally would. could she even feel? were all her emotions stripped away from her? she hopes not, while most people would not want them, she does.

It's what makes her feel human and right now, she doesn't feel human.

Her scan the area until her eyes finds a patch of flowers. it was quite a large patch and it seemed different from the rest. she suddenly smiled and walked out over. realizing that she was smiling, she smiled wider as she knows that she still has emotions.

She reached to the patch of flowers and quietly sat down in the middle of it. she took a look at all the pretty flowers her eyes could look at. it amazed and it took her breath away. as much as she wanted to pick them, she was afraid that they'll wilt away.

Suddenly she looked down and found a rose laying there.

And it wasn't just any normal red rose.

It was white and it looked like it was freshly cut from where it was growing. she carefully picked up the rose and looked at it. she remembered how Burt loved white roses and would draw them on his sketchbook.

They match perfectly to the one she was holding. she took a good look at it and started wondering how long the rose was cut and left on the ground. if it was for a long time then she's surprised that it hadn't wilted yet.

She was suddenly filled with excitement and carefully pulled rest of the stem off of the rose, leaving the head of the rose on her hand. she was planning on taking it home and showing it to Burt once she gets there.

A warm feeling started to grow on her chest and it made her feel good. she always enjoyed giving things to people then receiving. which is probably the reason why Christmas isn't really much of her favorite holiday unlike those other kids she knew.

Well, she knew that they enjoyed Christmas and so did she but not as much.

She looked up from the rose with a smile on her face while the moon shined it's light upon her and everything around her. it made her realize how oddly perfect this place is. it seems like a place for somebody who enjoyed being alone would come to.

If they knew how to find this place that is.

The wind gently blew around her and the scent of the flowers around her filled the air, causing the small child to take a deep breath. suddenly, another flower caught her attention, a blue one.

It wasn't a rose, unlike the one she was holding very carefully. it was shaped as a star and it was growing alone, with dead flowers around it. the flower was a bit far from where Soph was sitting. she got up and carefully made her away to the pretty blue star flower.

She found it strange that such a pretty flower was standing alone. it was growing alone while the flowers around it are dead. was someone not taking care of those flowers properly?

Why was this flower not growing with the other pretty ones..?

Soph thought as she got closer to the blue star flower. she entered the dead patch of flowers, her eyes only focused on the only one that was filled with life. carefully, she cut the blue flower from the ground, admiring it for a moment before walking away with it in hand.

While walking back, she stared at the two flowers in her hand. one white, one blue. one without a stem and with a stem. they were both different but Soph felt like they were connected. plus, white and blue make such a pretty color.

..Which is light blue, of course. either very light blue or the light blue you see in the sky sometimes.

Once arriving to the colorful patch of flowers, vibrating with life unlike the other patch she just visited. she smiled at the blue star flower and placed the head of the white rose before placing the blue star flower next to it.

These flowers.. feel oddly familiar. just the two of them, together, it feels like nothing could separate them, well, apart from Soph's small hands pulling them together.

But she didn't dare to.

For once, after all this drama (that has only been going around to 2 days) feels like it never happened. she felt calm and happy. just the window softly blowing into her hair and for once, the dirt wasn't bothering her like it usually does. this is oddly perfect.

Wait..

Are those two flowers related to-

                                                                    ---------------------------

She woke up, startled by the car roaring to live.

Finished already..?

"Ah, sorry! did I wake you up?" Demo asked, looking behind his car seat. Soph rubbed her eyes and nodded. Sarah is still staring at the window, she looks misses them. she looked down to her mittens and sniffed.

Demo noticed and sighed. "this will be over soon. we'll find them soon." he reassured Sarah with a gentle pat on her mitten. she wiped her eyes and nodded. pure sadness is reflected in her black eyes.

We're only kids.

Soph's mind suddenly went back into a clear memory of her dream. a clear picture of the white rose next to the blue star flower. it seemed so real and somehow she felt connected to Burt, in some way.

She has always been near him but she never felt connected but now, since she woke up from that strange dream, she felt connected.

Maybe..

After all this is over, I could tell him what I saw.

But for now, all Soph could do is wait and hope to find them very soon.
